thought about gale suddenly and how we're not quite sure when mystra came to him but, he was decently young and she chose him because of his power amd potential with the weave, how he could devote himself to her. she shaped, she groomed him.
the moment she leaves him, abandons him, gale dekarios who has devoted himself to her, is after the orb drains much of his original power. he's no longer an incredibly powerful archmage. if you look at his behavior, his eagerness to please and talk to tav/durge/whatever origin character, he wants to he useful. he wants to be useful so bad because he devoted himself to mystra and when he was no longer powerful, when he was weakened by the orb...she took her "love" for him away.
was gale smart for the orb business? not particularly. was he at fault? sure, basically. But you try begging for someone to love you when all they love is the power they have over you, rethink gale.

How often do you think Jesse thinks ab how he killed an innocent man in cold blood to save the life of the man who, unbeknownst to him, watched his girlfriend choke to death on her own vomit and then left her corpse for him to find laying next to him in the morning? Do y’all think he ever fully came to grips with that bc I sure as shit don’t… What the FUCK Walter

So… the God of Curiosity! How does he relate to the Lords of the Golden Hill? Is he invited in, is he seen as an interloper or usurper? Absolutely adore these two!
What a great question! I spent the morning refreshing myself on the Lords of the Golden Hills, which is the 5e gnomish pantheon, if anyone's unfamiliar. They are more active in the lives of their followers than other gods.
Also, sorry, this is where I reveal my superpower of being unable to write short answers to anything.
what's a god to a mayhew
Mayhew's parents are historians who take the name "the Forgotten Folk" as a personal insult, so he was weaned on myths and histories of the Lords of the Golden Hills. The Lords set Mayhew's expectations for what gods should be: invested and actively working to make things better.
(couldn't resist drawing mayhew and mamahew)
In game, Mayhew ran into many awful situations that he thinks good gods could have fixed, but didn't. Refugees slaughtered for sport, children locked in Cazador's dungeons for eternity, families enslaved and used as hostages, children murdered by Gortash's Steel Watch, you name it. These people surely prayed, but gods did not save them. Do gods who do nothing deserve worship?
Not to Mayhew. He was FULLY on board with Gale's astral boat scene logic of "we will be gods but BETTER because we CARE and DO STUFF." Mayhew is not a long-term thinker, especially if people are hurting right now, right in front of him. He sees only trees, never forests.
He views himself and Gale as being on their own side. All of his post-ascension decisions are based on them being an inseparable pair shaking up the system. He's not interested in being part of Lords of the Golden Hills.
what's a mayhew to a god
The Lords probably have mixed feelings about him. They would not invite him into their brotherhood. However, his goals often align with theirs, and as long as Mayhew didn't rock their boat too much, they'd be tenuous allies. More about Godhew and other gods under the cut!
Mayhew himself has many Glittergoldian qualities about him -- he's an elusive tale-teller and a sneak, and if you pried his coping mechanism sense of humor from him, he'd probably die on the spot -- so I think he'd get on with Garl Glittergold and Baervan Wildwanderer. Mayhew's not easily flustered, and he'd find it a hoot to be pranked by Garl, so I expect he'd pass any test of character Garl might run an upstart godling through.
Baravar Cloakshadow, god of illusions and deceptions, would be interesting. Mayhew is a born liar (deception is his second-highest skill after history) who cares deeply about protecting others, so on paper they're aligned. However, Baravar counts Mystra among his allies, so this alliance would be a strained one.
But the biggest reason Mayhew isn't interested in becoming a Lord of the Golden Hills? They're concerned primarily with the welfare of gnomes. As a god, Mayhew has broader designs than that.
a god for whom?
Mayhew cares about everyone, especially people who are unimportant. He was a latchkey kid who wandered all over the city from a very young age, poking his nose everywhere it shouldn't be and talking to people just to hear their stories. He probably even made friends with the sewer kobolds, despite historical bad blood between gnomes and kobolds. Most of the alliances Galehew make after ascension are Mayhew's doing. Gale is always grander and more powerful, but Mayhew is better-liked and better-loved by gods and mortals.
In particular, bleeding heart Mayhew is an ally and protector of children. Troublemakers, especially. The most common name he ends up being known by is the Children's God. In 5e, there doesn't actually seem to be a god FOR children, simply gods with "family" as part of their portfolio. To me, that reads as a god for parents. But Mayhew adores kids! In game, he looked out for all of them and spoiled them shamelessly via the barter menu. All the urchins got cash, clothing, trinkets, snacks, protective magical items, etc. He bought soup from Yenna every day. He gave Mattis 2000 gold () for a key he never even used (😭)...and gave the amulet of greater health (😭)...and some grenades because all children should have a chance to make bad decisions...
To kids, he's like an imaginary friend who'll help you out of a tight spot, aid your capers, and shield you from terrors. When a child ages out of needing an imaginary friend, he's there as the God of Curiosity -- and what is curiosity without drive? Perhaps they'll follow their dreams in the footsteps of his partner, the God of Ambition. Completely unintentionally, Mayhew probably ensures the longevity of the Galerian religion this way.
Not all of Mayhew's ideals survive ascension, though he goes in with good intentions. He loses some of himself, but his love for people is the core of him. It doesn't change.
#asks#mightymizora#i am so sorry you asked one question and i answered like ten#i just have SO many thoughts!!!#mayhew#galehew#my art#bg3#'mayhew sounds like a CHA character but he's a wizard?' yes. also criminal & warlock. he failed repeatedly at wizardry til he got tadpoled#he resented gale 'jsyk i am a wizarding prodigy' dekarios for a while. while falling for him. stupid wonderful gale. hate that guy#galehew was secret rivals to lovers from mayhew's POV. gale had no idea. he was on the colleagues to friends to lovers train#why is mayhew forever ride or die for god gale? mayhew sacrificed himself to be illithid but could not live that way#god gale turned him back and turned him divine. he gave mayhew back to himself. gave him back his heart. a happy ending despite it all#nothing will ever turn mayhew from gale now. not even if gale turned evil

"Oh General, what did you witness the night of the tragedy?
Oh General, could you have even known that your inability to act doomed the world?"
The Army of the Primordial Flame, the only strictly military guild- working directly under the Fourth Overseer, has been known for its expansionist expeditions throughout the world. Expedition "AURORA" was one like many. To lead such an expedition means your strategic skill has been acknowledged by the Fourth Overseer himself, the greatest honour. Gale was never really religious, he didn't care much about the Fourth's vision of the world. He just liked the prestige and importance that came with his role. And he was good at it.
The expedition was successful, only taking 4 months with no casualties. Back at Farport, he had managed to return with all 560 soldiers and mercenaries contracted from the Pharus Guild alive. Their trip back to Arkhan would have taken 3 days by boat. As Volkan had warned him; "It would be the best course of action, after all I have good reason to believe you might get attacked by enemy guilds on your way back. Keep an eye out for ambushes". The god couldn't accompany them as he had other matters to attend to. But Gale had other plans. His wife had given birth to their first kid just 2 months prior and his home, Spithol, was less than a day away. Sure it was the opposite direction than their destination, but surely it should be safe. There was no way any other guilds could have possibly known about the detour. And he missed his family so much.
They were at the town gates by evening. A joyous occasion, worthy of festivities. By night an entire festival was ready for both the civilians and the soldiers to enjoy. A celebration of the success and safe return. In honour of the hero of the town Gale. What later turned into the event known as the Unyielding Flame Massarce.
After a few hours of time with his family, plenty of food and a couple of drinks, movement away from the venue caught Gale's eye. A little drunk but still aware enough of his surroundings he ventured deeper into the dark alleyways of the town. At that point people were either fast asleep in their houses or still celebrating at the centre of the town, so the only light by now was coming from the clear starlit sky. A moment of peaceful quiet. The general slowly breathed in. The scent of the night humidity and- gunpowder?
What a terrible time to be drunk. After investigation, as much as one can investigate when under the influence, he realised that most of the town seemed to have been trapped. But no sign of culprits- everyone he had seen up to that point were people he knew. None of them could have done this, right? He ran to the town walls, towards the gates. Frozen shut via an impenetrable substance. Upon further investigation he came to the grim realisation that they were all trapped inside for good. As he looked for potential suspects or ways out if the worst was to happen he came across one of the people contracted from the Pharus guild. "We are in trouble- have you seen anyone suspicious around town?". A pause. It was too dark for Gale to read that man's expression. "No- not that I am aware-" "You need to warn the rest of the crew, we have to find a way to evacuate everyone" another pause. "Sure".
After minutes pass with no news from the crew or any results from his investigation, he headed towards the centre himself. And in the distance, in the sky, he could clearly see smoke. Mind racing he ran towards the festival. Tripping on his way back- what a terrible time to be drunk- he came across that same mercenary holding a torch. Making eye contact they both froze. Adam- he thinks that was his name, stared at him like a deer caught in headlights. Gale tightened the grip on his sword. He thought he understood what was happening in front of him. He thought for a moment that of course this was happening. He thought of killing the man in front of him. But he hesitated. At a standstill he couldn't help but think how much he just wanted to see his wife and daughter. The sound of explosions and loud screaming brought him back to reality. And he ran towards his home. Letting the man go.
It didn't take long for the fire to spread throughout the city. It didn't take long for the laughter of joy from the festivities to be turned into screams for help. It didn't take long for the smoke to overtake all the senses. Chaos and confusion spread. Gale tried directing his crew to help the people calm down- but where would they go? There was no escape, none that he could find. It didn't take long till the men in his crew who weren't consumed by the flames starting fighting each other. And all Gale could think about at that moment was how badly he wished to see his wife and daughter. He ran and ran, burnt corpses surrounding him. The smell of smoke and burnt flesh slowly choking him. His armour suffocating him, oh how badly he wanted to get rid of it. But it was his only protection from the fire. And he ran as towering flames grazed him. And he ran tripping on collapsed people, some still conscious enough to scream in pain. Maybe they were all cursing him at that moment. But all he could think about was how badly he wished to see his wife and daughter.
When he finally arrived at his home, it was completely ablaze. "Lyn?!" He shouted, choking on some of the smoke. No response. He jumped inside and looked around. He couldn't see anything but fire and smoke. Parts of the roof had already collapsed. And as he walked forward the floor beneath him crumbled and he fell in the basement, which had been untouched from the fire. As he was attempting to stand up again more debris fell on him, knocking him unconscious.
Hours passed before he finally got up to the first light of dawn. He slowly stood up, and made his way upstairs. By now his house had been completely burnt. Looking outside there were still fires burning some of the houses but he couldn't hear anything or anyone else. He walked further inside the house. A burnt corpse hunched over the what used to be a cradle. Ah. He sat there for what felt like ages, staring at the gruesome sight in front of him. He got to live out of sheer dumb luck. Just dumb luck.
When evening started approaching he just walked out. Very few fires were still burning in the distance, only some smoke now visible. He started looking around the streets and houses for anyone alive. He made sure to count them all. 2, 5, 10, 27, 42, 75, 100, 341, 784, and the number kept growing, and growing. People he could no longer recognise, people he had grown up with, people he had fought with, people he had so horribly failed. 1207 civilians dead. 558 soldiers dead. 1 missing person. Only survivor- Gale himself. By night he reached the gates of the town. Still completely frozen shut. And so he dug.
What followed after was a haze. He just walked for days, dwelling on that night. Ways he could have prevented it, ways it could have been better. Plagued by images of that night, all the victims. Why did they have to die. Why did he have to live.
A chuckle echoed in his ears. He looked up and saw a figure of legend. At least he thought he saw Her. It had to be. White robe, blindfold, the three halos decorating Her head, the pale hair and complexion. The doting Mother, Creation, Amatheia. She was smiling at the man. A smile that invoked fear. She reached Her hand out. The Witness of the end, of fates worse than death. And the verdict was decided.

But he still sucked as a person#dont let his beautiful blue eyes and pitiful look fool you- he WAS a prick even back then#it's just that- as much as he was a prick he still didnt deserve watching everyone die horrible deaths yknow#and then being cursed with visions of doom and then fired by your boss (literal god) in the worst way possible (you turn into a monster)#this thing took me days to finish it is not cute ueueue

Meredith Traventawny, A Wild Magic Sorcerer Bard. They are incredibly infatuated with Gale in an academic rivals to lovers kinda way.
They were "Adopted" (and I use that word liberally) by Raphael and raised as a little rich kid until they were introduced to the whole slave thing (very sheltered, never knew about the slaves until they were 10, thought it was wrong, met an enver who was 2 years older than them. threw a spectacular fit at Raphael to the point Raph thought turning his "adopted" child into a slave was the perfect punishment. and they became somewhat friendly with enver.) Enver made a plan to escape while Mered thought about how to force Raph to let Enver and them go properly. Eventually, Enver threw Mered under the bus and escaped, and Mered got some extremely severe punishments in his place until Raph realized that Mered had nothing to do with Envers' plan. Mereds slave era ends after that, and they "go back to being the rich kid." Raph raised them to be as a shitty apology attempt. Meredith's scars were removed, but they still experience cronic pain from the punishment.
And after a good 10ish years, the nautiloid ship plucked them right out of hell, and the worm party began.
#Enver stopped the durge from killing Meredith on that one heist#He felt bad about leaving them behind but he justified it by convincing himself that Meredith didn’t have a place in any of his plans#so he decided that they weren't worth keeping his promises.#Meredith hates him#so much that they stop karlach from killing him just to drag him back to Raphael to go through all they put Meredith through in his place#bg3 fanart#bg3#enver gortash#bg3 tav#Meredith Traventawny#Gale Dekarios#gale of waterdeep#all my canons are so different from each other#mereds enver is 44 while mirais enver is like 38#>83

#spoilers in tags#THEY CANT KILL DEWEY I SWEAR TO GOD#I HATE THIS MOVIE LIKE ACTUALLY#it’s not bad in some ways but in other ways why even make another sequel#it has the same problems as scream 4#it dials them back but it’s still overarching to the plot#also they should’ve made a sequel BEFORE ten years had passed especially for Gale and Dewey’s divorce why would you tell us instead of#showing us#also BILLY HAS A DAUGHTER ???? AND STU HAS A CANON SISTER ???? SINCE WHEN ???? YOU CANT JUST MAKE YHIS UP#Randy’s family I believe bc I think his sister was in the third one but that’s the only family connection that I’m accepting#I might rewrite this bc the idea of familial connections works with my story ideas but this is just awful#needless to say as soon as I get my hands on six I’m gonna watch it and complain about it

i can't keep my silence anymore so i'm gonna say it: i do not get the gale-is-hot hype. like i'm happy for all of y'all but that man loves the sound of his own voice so much. i enjoy him as the annoying talking animal friend but i cannot see the sexual icon that has inspired so much of the fanart i'm sorry.
#it might also partially be that wizards in bg3 are kind of meh tbh#like i love wizards in dnd but a big part of the fun is in the versatility of convincing the dm to let you cast spells in creative ways#whereas in a video game there's a very definite list of things that a spell has been coded to do which is more limiting#so bringing gale is like ok let me fill up one of my three companion slots with the guy who will be knocked out before he gets a turn#and also his whole personal arc is like the friend who cheated on his ex and is having a complicated time about it#like alright dude come on pick yourself back up. no i'm not gonna kiss you i saw what happened to your last relationship.#no don't do the stupid thing to try and stick it to your ex you were the asshole in that situation just let it go man cmon#idk when this turned into a gale hate post that's not what i intended#i don't hate him i just see way too many red flags for him to parse as remotely fuckable#bg3
