April is Spring, and Spring is for babies, baby chickens <3 <3

Alright. We all know about Roostass Kid, Massegger Soldier Killer, and Henn Peckman.

This is Hatch (thank you Quinloki) and Pico Bobin (thank you Softours).

These are my babies - the ones rejected by Mama Ophelia when they were hatching and needed human intervention to get out of their shells. They are getting a little stronger every day, but will likely need a lot of care to thrive.

If they make it to Tuesday on their little wobbly legs and get some more 'big boy feathers', I will try to sneak them under Mama Ophelia with their siblings. If not, we're loving them while we have them.

The babies are getting so big!! They've moved into the coop full-time now and overall they've been getting along really well with Foggy and Olivia. Foggy is still the big bad boss of the coop but for the most part she's been ignoring the babies and they in turn give her a wide berth.

Very surprised at how light-colored Mink has gotten! She and the other Easter Egger, Moose, are both starting to really grow their mutton chops out. Honey Bee and Buttercup the Buff Orpingtons are getting fluffier by the day. Buttercup loves to sit in my lap and on top of my head haha. <3

They're getting so big so fast I love them.

I cannot get close enough to them to get a picture just yet, but I just thought I'd let you know: The baby chickens are doing extremely well.

After hosting (t)Hatch and Pico Bobin in my room beside my bed for about one and a half weeks and nursing them to health, we snuck them under Mama Ophelia when she was nesting with the others. These little ones I helped crack open from their stuck shell, used my breath to keep them warm and breathe life into them, drip-fed them with a sterile baby medicine syringe fluids, and had cheeping beside my face for nearly two weeks. Now they've got a new mama, and I couldn't be prouder of the little idiots.

We are about 90% certain that Massegger Soldier Killer and Roostass Kid are cockerels, but it is quite hard to tell at such a young age. Just gotta wait until they start crowing in 20 more weeks. (t)Hatch and Bobin look like young pullets, but we have been wrong before ('Daryl' was initially 'Dahlia' until he went: "Cegh reh heeh heeeeerhhhr").

Unfortunately, Hen Peckman did not make it past four days old at no fault of human or chicken kind. Had to explain to my son that sometimes these things happen, which he likened to the 'squiggly black things' that we lost in the initial hatching experience. Where there is life and great joy, there is also death and deep sorrow.

For now, we have four little fuzz-butts: Roostass Kid, Massegger Soldier Killer, (t)Hatch, and Pico Bobin. Mama Ophelia is doing a wonderful job at raising babies that are absolutely not from any egg she laid herself. Best mama ever.

We have 3 one-day-old chicks that need to be kept at 95 degrees F... and one half-hatched still in the incubator...

And the power went out.

Luckily, after we scrambled around and gave everyone hot water bottles, and Vampire was in the process of hooking up incubator to convertor for car battery, the power came back on. Was probably out about 20 minutes. The incubator temp had dropped about 10 degrees and the humidity went up, but it went back to normal quickly. Hope chick is okay.
