DATV Mini-Rant about the lack of Lyrium Potions in this Game
A small thing that immediately made my stomach drop when playing DATV was the fact that there are no lyrium potions.
I did an elective on game design in university and chose Origins as my game of choice for my final essay because I always loved how much the game incorporated the world/lore in its game mechanics! Call it pathetic or sad (I won't blame you lmao) but this series was the first video game that engaged me so deeply with its story-telling that I wanted to dissect it. That's why I'm focusing on the lack of magical cocaine in a fantasy game series.
Lyrium is a substance that serves as a game mechanic and a major lore/world-building element. It's use is essential if you play the game as a mage or have party members that are mages - it replenishes mana in game, its use is central to being a mage within the story (harrowing, rituals, etc...), and it's a major export/plot relevant resource that is important to the world at large.
So imagine my surprise when I boot up DATV for the first time and there's no lyrium potions as a mage character. My main interest in the game series was for its lore and story (RIP) so I didn't look too hard into developer interviews or videos about the combat itself - it would either be good or bad, but that wasn't my main draw to the game. I kept playing, wondering if I would ever unlock another slot for potions, perhaps, but then it was abundantly clear that it wasn't the case.
It's a small thing, but popping a lyrium potion mid-combat has the same effect that hearing people say 'Maker's breath' and 'Thank the Maker' does. It's this little bit of world-building that reminds me that I'm playing a Dragon Age game. It's not just a 'mana potion' or some other glowy blue magic vial...it's this substance that's important to the world and that has a reason to be there beyond rejuvenating my mage.
It's the major export of Orzammar -> the pillar of its economy.
It's the substance that allows waking mages to enter the Fade -> it allowed me to save Connor Guerrin with the aid of other mages.
It's the substance that the Chantry uses to leash it's templars through addiction -> an addiction I encouraged Cullen to overcome in DAI.
It's the substance used in the Rite of TRANQUILITY.
It's the substance that allows my warrior character to take on the templar specialization in each game -> Alistair and Ser both talk about lyrium and its relevance to training (in DA2 you just do it lmao)
It's the substance burned into Fenris's skin by Danarius.
It's the literal blood of the Titans -> lyrium veins are literal veins (such a cool design choice in DAI to make them look like blood capillaries!)
And all the time in DAO, DA2, and DAI my mage characters were downing this substance like there was no tomorrow.
Even though the combat changed in DA2 and DAI they still kept lyrium potions for mages. Even though they simplified herbalism from DAO in the next two games, they still required the player to interact with the world and find the ingredients for these potions. It was this gameplay mechanic that linked the player to the world -> I know that I need blood lotus to set shit on fire, elfroot for healing potions/lyrium potions, etc... It was cool game design, having game mechanics and lore interconnected like this.
(Not saying that picking up dozens of elfroots was fun or the best game design, btw -> but it's just an example of how they linked the world and game mechanics together, and I like the intent behind it! Cool design does not equal effective design lmao)
What do we get in DATV? No lyrium, whatsoever, just healing potions.
Potions we don't even have to work to find or get crafted! Just break some green shit and there it is! We don't pick up ingredients or discover unique flora to each of these Northern Areas for our own use. We don't loot potions or ingredients from corpses, sacks, boxes, chests (etc...) to replenish our own stock. A healing potion in this game is not a potion you craft, made from ingredients you found, it's a button I press on my controller. It's lost that immersive link - especially when your companions can toss another one at you while being effectively immortal in combat.
The only new flora we hear of is Broma's Bloom which I did like the lore behind! It's used in dye to colour the Warden's armour and its growth is a sign that the damage of the Blight is lessening. I love that! That's a cool bit of lore! Especially since it's named after Andraste's mother in a land that is supposed to be extremely religious. Geographically unique flora and fauna (biodiversity) is just as important as architectural design when designing an area - DAI did this amazingly well with the different creatures and plants we could run into in each area!
The first time we meaningfully talk about lyrium is when we go to Kal Sharok for the first time - a decent amount of game time since the beginning of the game, depending how fast you play. And then, when we get there, the lyrium looks like a bunch of crystals from a 'grow your own lyrium' kit. The absence of lyrium from the game world and mechanics is something that was very hard for me to overlook considering its importance to every previous entry. Especially since in this game we address the fucking Titan's and what the fuck happened to them.
Just...imagine playing a mage in Dragon Age and not using lyrium?
This game is a death of a thousand cuts - so many small, meaningful world-building elements and mechanics brushed off - before fucking godzilla comes along and nukes it all with the handling of the main story/lore.

The High Republic series confirmed that part of a Jedi youngling’s day in the creche are midday naps on little nap mats, and now the image of all our faves in youngling form curled up on the nap mat is living rent free in my head

Omega: Dew, say hi to Aether! He's going to spend some time here with us while his parents are working okay?
Kit Aether: —nervously clutching his shirt with a shy smile— H-Hello!
Kit Dewdrop, lurking behind Omega's leg with a menacing look: ...
Kit Aether: —sweating— U-um...
Kit Dewdrop: —Finally stepping out from behind Omega's leg—... Salami.
Kit Aether: W-What?
Kit Dewdrop: —standing inches from Aether's face— Do. you. like. Salami.
Kit Aether, shaking: N-No?
Kit Dewdrop: —Silence—
Kit Aether: I-i mean! I never got the chance to eat it so-
Kit Dewdrop: good. Because i'm not sharing. Got it?
Kit Aether: —fearful nod—
Kit Dewdrop, still menacingly: You may live another day...—pause— Wanna see my toys?
Kit Aether: s-sure!
—both leave to Dew's room.—
Omega: —Processing—
Alpha, joining him and watching Dewdrop and Aether leave: Awwe, they're just like us in their age!

So that #Syrin the Dread Blade tag, thats a new one. Seems like a interesting character, a sentient sword, how did Tyler happen upon them? What does the sword look like, and does it have any special magical abilities? How do they like the other members of the party? Do they actually speak or do they have a telepathic voice?
Technically it's just a tagging misconception; I haven't tagged Syrin reliably before because his nature as a sword does mean he's kind of attached to Taylor. But he is his own dude!
A short primer: magic items in this setting tend towards a level of awareness. Magic is essentially what souls are made of, ergo, if you stuff enough magic in anything, it starts to have a soul, and behaves accordingly. Entities as fully developed and chatty as Syrin are rare; far more common is that magic items tend to feel just a little bit haunted, inclined towards some things and away from others. It's a bit creepy if you're not used to it; enchantments are commonplace and widely accessible, so that 'not being used to it' is more a statement on if the individual is used to handling a particular thing.
Syrin himself is the ostensible opus of the previous Lord of Darkness, a Dark Sword that was meant to contest and cancel out the legendary sword of light wielded by the hero. Ostensibly, because for unknown reasons Syrin was left in storage the eve of the fateful battle. Being groomed exclusively for this purpose by someone he regarded as a father and then abandoned for ten years definitely wasn't traumatic or terrifying for someone with the cognitive level of a child, we promise. Especially since Syrin needs to eat.
Syrin's construction, and what leads Taylor to point out he's a bit like a 'needle', is a crystal-bladed thrusting sword with a hollow core. Despite its delicate looks, the blade is actually both quite sharp and highly durable; the thin tube at the center being essentially his mouth, by which he is supposed to drink blood. His victims', if he can get it, or, failing that, magically drawn from his host. As a result his blade itself ranges from grayish translucence to dark red if he's gorged to fullness.
From there, he has the power to generate and shape a kind of magical flesh, allowing him to weave more elaborate forms around his core body, the sword.
As you can guess, this gives Syrin a somewhat unpleasant and brutish first impression on people, as he has no verbal filters, was raised by a would-be conqueror of the world, and is dependent on blood and thus interested in more fights than not. I've described him before as like a preteen on xbox live who talks up a nasty game mostly out of loneliness and a need to be liked, where you can tell the kid themselves is not as bad as the people who taught them all those words and that they were "funny".
Deep down (and not all that deep, like I said, no filters), Syrin is a vulnerable child who was groomed to do violence and got no experience with it until strangers came to loot the dangerous ruins he was held in, at which point he did what you'd expect a strong but sheltered child to do faced with a home intruder, and killed/devoured that individual in a panic. His first kill being no glorious conflict or victory approved by his father, but essentially a desperate scramble in the dark with himself on the edge of fatal starvation messed him up even more than ten years of silence.
Enter Taylor and party, who happen to pass through those same environments. Syrin makes an attempt to body-snatch Taylor that fails due to the latter's particular properties, and Taylor, being both a good-hearted person and a stubborn busybody, feels obligated to bring this chatterbox with them and attempt to bully him into developing some sense of tact while Syrin attempts to Corrupt His New Wielder To Violence.
This doesn't work because Syrin has no real ideas how to go about corrupting someone besides loudly telling them to stab things more, while Taylor is an apprentice surgeon and mortician who is a lot more desensitized to bodies and their workings such that if they have a weapon, they'll at least consider it as a solution to most problems. So the punchline is that Syrin is more often thrown/flabbergasted by Taylor than vice versa, while the latter just sees him as a sort of annoying kid who's easily talked into almost anything as long as you compliment him first.

Kit and Penny really are naturals at this baby care thing. Taking turns in changing Aska's diaper, they both often cuddled with her, cooed at her or showered her in kisses. As Penny was home all the time, she could take care of all feeding moments and luckily, breastfeeding went really well. Cheap and practical, double win!

Sometimes I imagine what would have happened if for some reason Lemony couldn't give the baby he kiddnapped from police custody to the librarian. It is implied she was an VFD agent so maybe the library catched fire before Lemony got there or something.
Would he put the baby back? Or would thirteen year old, homeless and likely a bit feverish, Lemony Snicket just KEEP the baby? Would that make him go back to Staind? Or to VFD? Or would he keep running like normal but now with an infant? Imagine Lemony just coming back from his unsupervised time at either fourteen or fifteen with a whole as baby (at max a two years old) who he never explains how he got but also is resolute he will raise! All while Jacques tries to convince him to let the kid just become a volunteer and be raised by VFD like them and Kit giving Lemony a concerning number of teen pregnancy/motherhood leaflets (there is not as much teen fatherhood leaflets) no one knows how she keeps getting.

A Guide to Baby Care Products in Healthcare Medicine
Welcoming a new addition to the family is an exciting and joyous event, but it also comes with a host of responsibilities, including ensuring the health and well-being of your precious little one. Baby care products play a crucial role in this journey, helping parents provide the best care possible for their infants. In this blog, we'll explore the world of baby care products within the realm of healthcare medicine, highlighting their importance and discussing some essential items every parent should consider.
Diapers and Baby Wipes
Diapers and baby wipes are among the most fundamental baby care products. Keeping your baby clean and dry is essential for their comfort and overall health. Disposable diapers are convenient for most parents, while others prefer cloth diapers for their eco-friendliness. Whichever option you choose, make sure to change diapers frequently to prevent diaper rash and skin irritations. Baby wipes with gentle, hypoallergenic ingredients are perfect for maintaining cleanliness.
Baby Skincare
A baby's skin is delicate and requires special care. Opt for baby skincare products such as gentle, fragrance-free baby soap, shampoo, and lotion. These Baby Care Products are designed to be mild on the skin and eyes, reducing the risk of irritation and allergies. Always check the ingredients and choose products free of harmful chemicals like parabens and phthalates.
Baby Thermometers
In healthcare medicine, monitoring your baby's temperature is crucial. A reliable digital thermometer is an essential tool for every parent. Fever can be a sign of illness, so knowing your baby's temperature accurately is vital for early intervention and seeking medical advice when necessary. Ear and forehead thermometers are popular choices for their ease of use and accuracy.
Baby Nail Clippers and Files
Babies' nails can grow surprisingly fast and sharp, posing a risk of scratching their delicate skin. Baby nail clippers or files designed for small fingers are indispensable for keeping your baby's nails trimmed and safe. Be sure to trim nails carefully, as baby skin is sensitive.
Nasal Aspirators
Babies often experience congestion due to their immature immune systems. A nasal aspirator helps clear mucus from your baby's nose, allowing them to breathe more comfortably. Opt for a bulb syringe or a nasal aspirator with a gentle, hygienic design to avoid any harm to your baby's nasal passages.
Baby Feeding Essentials
In the realm of healthcare medicine, proper nutrition is paramount. If you're not breastfeeding, baby bottles and formula are essential items for feeding your baby. Make sure to choose BPA-free bottles and high-quality formula recommended by your pediatrician. Sterilizing equipment is also crucial to maintain a hygienic feeding environment.
Baby First Aid Kit
A well-stocked baby first aid kit is a must-have for any parent. It should include essentials such as adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, baby-safe scissors, tweezers, and a digital thermometer. Having these items on hand can provide peace of mind and swift response to minor injuries and ailments.
Conclusion
Baby care products are vital components of healthcare medicine for your little one. These products help maintain your baby's health and well-being while making parenting a more manageable and enjoyable experience. Prioritize gentle, hypoallergenic products, consult with your pediatrician for recommendations, and stay informed about best practices in baby care. By doing so, you can provide your baby with the care they deserve, setting the foundation for a lifetime of good health and happiness.
