Kit Dewdrop, standing behind the door in complete silence: —staring at the entrance with a spoon in his hand—
Omega, who just walked into the scene: Uuuh... Alpha?
Alpha: —Holding a camera and pointing it at Dew— Hey, sugar-tits.
Omega: What is Dew doing?
Alpha: Remember I was telling him stories from when i was in the pit and how we used to "fight for territory" when some new ghoul got way too close?
Omega, starting to realize where this is going: —In a fearful voice— Yeah?...
Alpha: It turns out that he heard that another kit is coming along with the new legion.
Omega: That temporary one that's being summoned to take care of the Christians that are messing up the borders?
Alpha: Yuup. —Fixing the camera's focus—
Omega, finally turning to Alpha: And what are you doing?...
Alpha, suddenly excited: Oooh, this will be way to good to miss!
Omega: —Processing and then burying his face in his hands— Oh no...
Alpha: Come ooon, don't worry so much about it! A little conflict will be good for the kid.
Omega, sighing heavily and frowning: This isn't going to end well... —Looking back at Dew—... Why the spoon tho?
Alpha: I told him that if he ever found himself in a similar situation to always bring an weapon with him. But I think he has too much respect for the "no touching sharp things without an adult" rule.
Omega, sitting next to Alpha and crossing his arms: Well... it could be worse I guess. What element is the new kit again?
Alpha: I think Quintessence, but not sure.
Omega: Hm...
—Silence—
Omega: ...Did you called me "Sugar-tits" ?

grace siblings x the ithaca saga
hear me out. disclaimer for severe sibling angst ahead so be warned. also! special thanks to and blame on @xixovart for the original idea :')
aight so, unreleased ithaca saga number i cant help bit wonder fits them and both of them extraordinarily well, allow me to demonstate:
All my life, I'd have died to meet you Thought about your name so much it hurts For twenty years I'd dreamt of how I'd greet you Oh, and now you're here I can't find the words
i havent read the books so pls correct me if im wrong, but i dont think the siblings saw much of each other after they were seperated.
thalia: perhaps here jason passes her tree unknowingly and she just feels him. and she thinks to herself all what could have been..
jason: hes heard so much about his older sister only now learning of her death, and it breaks him
--
All my life I'd have died to know you Days and nights I wish that I could show you For twenty years I never could outgrow you Oh, and now you're here
thalia: living on the streets perhaps her thoughts where with her baby brother whom she had to look after for so long, the price of ensuring his well being and growth stunting her own
jason: holding onto the idea of his warrior older sister, trying to live up to the image he has of her in his mind. he stands now helpless infront of her tree, unsure what to do. what to think
--
I can't help but wonder What your world must be If we're like each other If I have your strength in me
jason: now learning of the immense hardship his upbringing had entailed, the years of neglect and abuse followed by running away and not knowing his fate. jason is overwhelmed with what it mustve been like to live years not knowing if she will live to see the next sunrise
I can't help but feel like Sorrow's all I've known And I can't help but realize For so long I've felt alone
thalia: maybe as a tree maybe before that wherever she is or may be, thalia knows her brother didnt have the easiest childhood. he may not be on the streets like she once was but in many ways he had to learn how to fend for himself
both: reflecting on how theyve been doomed from the start. no child of the big three could ever have as we say in arabic مرور الكرام - muroor al kiram (lit. gracious passage) i.e to go unnoticed; they were never going to get the endings they deserved. its the price they were forced to pay for their fathers' mistakes and shortcomings.
-------
this next part is more father son oriented so ill skip the first verse lol
Used to say I'd make the storm clouds cry for you Used to say I'd capture wind and sky for you Held you in my arms prepared to die for you, oh How times has flown
thalia: once again thinking of the child she held in her arms, her baby brother, whom she loved more than anything, but served as a harsh reminder of the reality of their living conditions.
I can only wonder What your world has been Things you've had to suffer And the strength you hold within
jason: need i say more?
All I've ever wanted Was to reunite with my own 20 years we've wandered But today you're not alone
both: in her strange state of being and in his half living state, thalias leaves rustle in the wind, jason reaches to feel the bark under his fingertips. it hardly counts for an embrace, but its all they have
I'm finally home
both: jason cries and the morning dew falls and the skies weep for the siblings that could have had it all but were given nothing and stripped of everything
--
fun fact i originally had just jason be telemachus and thalia ody but decided it works well for both so i split them into two different interpretations sort of?
idk in my minds eye it reads like how in movies 2 people reach out to each other at the same time unkowingly and like hold hands kinda but are sperated by a wall or sum lol.
yeah. them.
#if anyone is wondering abt my emotional state rn i wrote this in its entirety while listening to cow jazz#im FINE#grace siblings#jason grace#thalia grace

Totally Reprise Episode 85
"but I was just kind of like, asking about your experience." Is this an episode of Talkin' About Our Experience? "I don't know anything about public speaking and I choose not to" Seems like a good decision. "People laughed at jokes" "I think that's the ideal." Thank you for mentioning Klomanager, Luke oh god, Danny O'Dwyer on Let's Place, I don't even know what the fuck I'd do about that "Listen. I will not. I will not. That thieving... just... bastard." Agreed, STRONGLY agreed. "Is the Cell Saga the worst saga?" My immediate reaction is, the Cell Saga might be my favorite saga. "What are your thoughts on Uub?" "Man, I like Uub." "I like Uub!" "That's right, they just had a bad guy named Baby, huh?" Baby Vegeta's got a fuckin look, I remember that. "That's, like, mid-life crisis Vegeta." "Shut the fuck up about your problems." "Damn!" "Sorry Luke, you're right!" apparently there's a LOT of cucking in Runaways "I decided not to be funny this episode." A bold move, but I respect it. "I've just kind of been being sarcastic about liking jokes, but people just keep taking that like, literally?" "What are we hanging on for?" "We're just hanging on for a sec." what's happening here Chelsea has entered the podcast "You didn't think I'd let you go, did you? You didn't think I wouldn't pay you back, did you?" "I asked Chelsea like 10 weeks ago!" "How do you feel about giant ladies, Chelsea?" "Uh, they're fine." "I'm doing fantastic. My friends are here, my girlfriend is here, what else, why wouldn't I be doing amazingly?" "There seems to be a bit of seething anger mixed with like, embarassment." "like, human rights violations?" "I don't know what you're talking about. Anyway, this guard sees someone has a teddy bear, and says those are illegal." Any dude with brown hair could be Tim Scam, fucking any of them "I think sometimes Totally Spies tries to be a good show." I'm not convinced honestly. "By the way, I forgot Dimunitive Smalls had like, super saiyan hair." "Diminutive Smalls has the worst fuckin' voice." It's so bad! FUCK, Luke has 100% perfectly emulated this terrible voice "Do you feel like, a kinship with Diminutive Smalls? You just got that voice so down pat." god damn "I smoke 12 packs of helium a day!" "it's almost like the writers for this episode had a weird, like, fixation with like, extremely powerful rumbles coming from footfalls or something, I don't know." It's KIND OF like that. "You'd think they would never come here, given that, this is where Tim Scam did fuck their moms." "They have loyalty cards." "Hey, so his entire plan is, I'm gonna make one of the spies really big." "Yes." "That's it, right?" That's all the fuck he's got! "this is just someone going like, hey we had that episode with the guy who made things small... what if we made them big" Ashley's delivery on this is amazing. "So they're gonna get big, and then they're gonna fight with their clothes half ripped off." jesus christ this powerpuff girls episode that is being described "Maybe they just don't know when school happens." That has to be true. "Sam, you literally are an amazon, this is established canon." I did watch the Jon Bois video where that football team got fucking owned, it was good. "Maybe if we just keep talking up Jon Bois, he'll come guest on the show." "It does destroy a smoothie stand." shit "I thought Mandy maybe just ran through the sign of Dr. TJ Ecklenberg, or whatever." I'm always here for Dr. TJ Eckleberg jokes, for some reason. "Hey, remember how Smalls's entire thing is that he was bitter that they couldn't grow him back to normal?" "You know, being shrunk's not so bad, maybe if I made some women get bigger..." "And then they start killing people." A lot of people died at this part. "He fires, and ends up hitting a beetle, a flower, and a snail, which kickstarts a whole Junji Ito comic." "He just has no comprehensible plan. He's just doing this to do it." Ashley was watching a different video and found a lesbian comment, which is perfect. Molly and Luke are just fucking reading this fan ending, I'm excited This script makes an excellent point, Smalls would not be able to escape prison like that if he was bigger, I get why they were so annoyed by that. "Apparently Mountain Dew is just force femme juice." "It's gamer fuel, baby!" "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman's like the Pixies." "I didn't think very hard about how much Dragon Ball there is before we started that." Are you skipping GT? You've only got like 10 more years to figure that out. "I was like, you're the boss, here we go, all aboard the train for piss station!" Everyone hates the time that Teenagers With Attitude records at. "Like you guys thought that Coheed and Cambria was bullshit before, you weren't ready." "See, it makes sense that the spies are terrible spies, because Jerry's a terrible spy." "He's just making snuff films." "Yes." "Yes."

1, 11, 12, 13
1. if someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to?
You would read Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire. Then you would play both AdventureQuest Worlds (Chaos, SkyGuard, and the beginning of the QoM saga) and The Gray Garden. You would watch Bridge to Terabithia, and you would listen to The Haunted by Avantasia, and both Ma Survival and Escape of the Witch Salmhofer by Akuno-P.
And if you recognize the door that lead me to Chaos, the bloody beginning of my life as Luteia and the innocence my Princess once had; the power that belief changes even time; and the city smoke that hid everything else in my life as Pale; then you would understand a little.
And when you listen to the Haunted and it is comforting but not terrifying, then you have a place in Chaos alongside people who are either me or very dead.
Once you have all of those things together, you would slowly begin to understand the amalgam that is me, stained glass slapped together with drying blood and ideal, sickening sights.
Then you would read the poem known as A Monstrous Manifesto, and it will either come crashing down with all the sense that can be made of it, or you will be lost, and nothing I say past that will clear the fog.
11. describe your ideal day.
It is one in which I have gone to bed the night previous early, not long after sunset. I wake naturally without an alarm, somewhat early, when things are still a little damp with dew and the sun isn’t up beyond the eastern trees quite yet. I wake up my two brothers, Kiril and Seth, allowing both Adam and Elluka to sleep in. The three of us get dressed and head for our motorcycles. We hit the highway before anyone else is really awake, and we have breakfast in a nearby town in a diner that’s questionably full of biker gangs, and they welcome us to have breakfast with them. This of course, is not just to walk the fine line between evil and order but also for the bragging rights at the jobs we likely have.
After breakfast we return to the road, and we fly by in the winding mountain roads for most the day. We stop when we see something interesting, be that pulling over to take a picture of a baby deer or “oh shit is that a Smitty’s? We’re going there for lunch guys sorry I don’t make the rules”.
We return early afternoon. By this time Adam and Elluka are awake and have had breakfast and probably had a minor argument over who gets to shower first, conveniently forgetting that we have more than one shower.
This is when we clean the house and burn some incense, and it doesn’t take long. For the next couple of hours everyone gets to do what they want on their own for a bit, for all five of us are probably introverted.
I use the time to do some spells and water all my plants, named after long lost family members that are not forgotten. Maybe I work a bit on my latest novel, or draw something nice.
Then I and someone else who can cook make dinner, and it is good and nice. Dinner is likely roast chicken, with lavender syrup and garlic mashed potatoes, and fruit from our garden in the back yard. We eat it outside on the deck, because it is springtime and just warm enough to do so.
As I and the other person cooked, we do not have to clean. So once things are cleaned up in the kitchen, the five of us return to the living room for Cuddle Pile and watch a good movie. It is likely Secret of Moonacre. That is a gods damn good movie.
After the movie, we are sleepy. So we go to bed. It is a simple question of “hey, separate beds or cuddle pile?” and either is fine, depending on who’s been cuddled enough and who would like the extra warmth.
At least, as ideal as we can get. But it’s good enough for me.
12. dog person or cat person?
Cat. I don’t exactly have the energy (thanks exec. dysfunction!) for a dog, so cats it is.
13. inside or outdoors?
Inside, usually. I can only be outside for so long before I Die.

Lego Star Wars Holiday Special Is Everything Star Wars Doesn’t Need Right Now
https://ift.tt/2E5v2UK
This Thanksgiving, around the time we’ll all be reading articles online about whether or not it’s safe to insult your extended family in person, or over Zoom, there will also be a new Star Wars “festive” product to watch on Disney+. The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special is coming whether your want it or not, and even if you haven’t paid attention to any of the other Lego Star Wars things, something in the Force tells me everyone is going to have an opinion about this thing specifically.
Stream your Star Wars favorites right here!
In an exclusive report, USA Today revealed that the special will reunite Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron to celebrate Life Day, the Star Wars holiday first introduced in the original Holiday Special that aired on CBS in 1987. Executive producer Josh Rimes described the new special as It’s a Wonderful Life but in the Star Wars universe. Rey will meet a young Luke Skywalker via time travel, and there will also be Lego versions of other Wookiee characters from the original special.
So, Lego Rey is going to meet the ghosts of Star Wars past a la A Christmas Carol, and the whole thing is going to be zany and heartwarming, right?
Well, maybe.
Previous Lego Star Wars projects almost always emphasize goofy humor, with varying degrees of success. But, when it comes to this new holiday special, to paraphrase the opening theme song of A Series of Unfortunate Events, we really should look away. Just because there’s a cutesy new Star Wars thing that is threatening to mine nostalgia from the entire saga AND the embarrassing 1978 Holiday Special, doesn’t mean we need to watch it.
Star Wars fans should think hard about what this kind of thing really is: A subpar Star Wars product which has the same relationship to actual Star Wars as “cheese product” has to real cheese. Even before it airs, The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special combines the three things that are the most embarrassing about Star Wars junk: The tendency to make cool Star Wars things into reductive Lego romps, nostalgia as a product, and a dishonest love for the objectively terrible 1978 Holiday Special.
Like Darth Vader swooping in on Rebel pilots Dutch and Tiree during the Death Star trench run, let’s knock out those first two real quick. Most of the Lego Star Wars movies and shows are not very cool and destroy their own potential by being Lego products. I mean, the best Lego Star Wars thing is The Freemaker Adventures. Not only does that series star mostly entirely new characters (the Freemaker family) but it’s closer to canon, and best of all, it features the most powerful Black family in Star Wars.
And yet, for all of the good things about The Freemaker Adventures, it’s still not quite canon, and that’s mostly because of the Lego aspect. This bothers me. It’s the most racially diverse version of Star Wars, but it’s relegated mostly to a Lego-joke. Why not feature these characters in a regular Star Wars thing?
Lego Star Wars isn’t necessarily evil, and it’s (probably?) not hurting anyone, but anything interesting or progressive that happens in a Lego Star Wars thing (like the Freemakers) is undone by the fact that it is Lego. It’s impossible to take it seriously, and while fans of Lego Star Wars stuff will tell me to lighten up, I’d like to point out that it’s possible to be funny without being zany. Star Wars already has a fantasy hyperbolic artifice by nature. The Lego version just reduces it to a toy ad, an overtly commercial venture designed to entice you to buy Star Wars-themed Lego kits.
Look, a saga-spanning Star Wars Holiday Special doesn’t sound bad on its face, but the question is: why does this have to be Lego? Why not just an animated Star Wars Holiday Special done in the style of Forces of Destiny or The Clone Wars? The premise sounds fun: Rey discovers the World Between Worlds from Rebels and then travels back in time to meet everyone significant from all of Star Wars. Thinking about this as a piece of non-Lego animation is much more exciting. Thinking about it as a Lego thing just telegraphs out the message ahead of time: This is just a new notch in Disney’s partnership with the toy company.

What Star Wars: The Clone Wars Says About Maul and Ahsoka’s Connection
By Megan Crouse
What would happen if you had a Star Wars Holiday Special sponsored by 7-Eleven and all the characters were just drinking Slurpees the whole time? This is kind of why I hated the Michael Bay Transformers movies; they were commercials for Hummers, Camaros, and Mountain Dew. At its worst, Star Wars is a commercial for its own merch and toys, and adding Lego on top of that just makes it seem all that more superficial.
Which brings me to the larger point. This feels desperate. If Star Wars — as a brand — were trying to mitigate some of the sourness caused by The Rise of Skywalker, this doesn’t feel like the way to go. If the Sequel Trilogy proved anything, it’s that nostalgia will only get you so far. Playing the hits is fun at first but bringing the Emperor back for reasons in the third act of a trilogy that’s supposed to be about a new generation of heroes shows a lack of imagination…and an unwillingness to move forward.
And the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special shows that Disney has learned nothing on that front. Why does Star Wars have to pay any kind of homage to the 1978 Holiday Special in 2020? The original Holiday Special is a media product that George Lucas himself wishes he could take back. Look. I know it’s funny to say “Release the Holiday Special, you cowards.” But, come on. It’s really bad. Do you want to see Chewbacca’s uncle or whatever low-key masturbating to weird dancing girl holograms? Do you want to see Mark Hamill’s bizarre haircut? Do you want to see Carrie Fisher furious that she has to put words to the Star Wars theme song?
The Holiday Special is Star Wars on coke, trying to play it cool at a five-year-old’s birthday party. It is not a good look. George Lucas was right. We shouldn’t have nostalgia for things that are truly terrible just because there are kitschy aspects to them that are interesting to pop culture historians. Nobody actually liked the Star Wars Holiday Special when it aired, and that’s not because people were wrong. It’s just bad.
Yes, the brief animated cartoon which introduced Boba Fett is cool. But we have a wonderful live-action version of this called The Mandalorian. Where’s my animated 20-minute Baby Yoda Christmas Special? Doesn’t that automatically sound better than this Lego thing? Want to evoke some real nostalgia that actually won’t suck? Why not do a holiday episode of The Mandalorian, but in the animation style from 1978? THAT would be cool. In comparison, The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special feels like the extension of a marketing deal that is being passed off as a narrative. It may fool very young kids, but older ones (including those in their 30s and 40s) should know better.
Nobody asked for a Lego Star Wars Holiday Special. Let’s not repeat history by just trying to do the same thing, but only worse. The path to the Dark Side often comes from many kinds of negative tendencies— greed, jealously, fear — but the one we tend to leave out is the one Star Wars displays the most often: bad taste.
The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special premieres on Nov. 17 on Disney+.

The Pythons Remember Terry Jones, a ‘Renaissance Comedian’
When Terry Jones went to work, he wore the robes of a Spanish inquisitor, the jacket of a French waiter and the business attire of a man selling crunchy frogs.
And long after he and the other members of Monty Python set off on separate paths, he took on new roles — as a director and historian, among others. After his death on Tuesday, many prominent admirers recalled how he had touched their lives.
“Farewell, Terry Jones. The great foot has come down to stamp on you,” wrote the actor Stephen Fry on Twitter, alluding to the cartoon foot that crashed through many Monty Python sketches. “My god what pleasure you gave, what untrammelled joy and delight.”
The director Edgar Wright began to list some of Mr. Jones’s most famous characters, like one of the Hell’s Grannies and Nigel Incubator-Jones.
The comedian John Oliver called him “the absolute best.” The actor Mark Gatiss said he was “a cornerstone of my growing up.”
Many Python fans know the lines he delivered by heart, from the sales pitch of a crunchy frog salesman (“only the finest baby frogs, dew-picked and flown from Iraq, cleansed in the finest quality spring water, lightly killed”) to a mother’s scorn after her son is mistaken for divine (“He’s not the messiah, he’s a very naughty boy”).
In his post-Python career, Mr. Jones worked on documentaries about the Middle Ages, screenwriting, children’s books and a Norse saga of his own, but it was the legacy of Monty Python that dominated tributes to him.
The living Pythons quickly spoke out after hearing the news of Mr. Jones’s death, including his close friend and frequent writing partner, Michael Palin.
“He was far more than one of the funniest writer-performers of his generation,” Mr. Palin told Britain’s Press Association. “He was the complete Renaissance comedian: writer, director, presenter, historian, brilliant children’s author, and the warmest, most wonderful company you could wish to have.”
Another former Python, Eric Idle, wrote on Twitter: “I loved him the moment I saw him onstage at the Edinburgh Festival in 1963. So many laughs, moments of total hilarity onstage and off we have all shared with him.”
Mr. Jones announced in 2016 that he had primary progressive aphasia, a neurological disease, and Mr. Idle seemed to allude to the condition. “It’s too sad if you knew him,” he said, “but if you didn’t you will always smile at the many wonderfully funny moments he gave us.”
The American member, Terry Gilliam, wrote on Twitter that Mr. Jones “was someone totally consumed with life” and “a brilliant, constantly questioning, iconoclastic, righteously argumentative and angry but outrageously funny and generous and kind human being.”
John Cleese, speaking to BBC Radio on Wednesday, said that Mr. Jones brought an “endless energy and enthusiasm” to everything he did. “He got up one day when we were shooting on the south coast,” Mr. Cleese said, “and he got excited about how green the grass was.”
He also had a confidence — to direct, to argue, to take on something new — that Mr. Cleese said he envied. “‘Life of Brian’ was his masterpiece,” he said, referring to the Python film that Mr. Jones directed alone. On Twitter, he called it “perfection.”
Mr. Jones had several parts in the film, including as a hermit whose vow of silence is cut short by a stubbed toe, and as Brian’s mother, who struggles to dismiss a crowd of adorers with a simple message: “Shove off.”
But Mr. Cleese said he would remember Mr. Jones as Mr. Creosote, a character whose titanic appetite makes him swell like a balloon. (Mr. Jones also directed the sketch, which ends poorly for his character.) “I shall think of him exploding,” Mr. Cleese said.
Though Mr. Jones and Mr. Cleese did not often write together, they shared some of the group’s most memorable sketches, like one in which Mr. Jones plays a confectioner who is delighted to sell chocolate-covered frogs.
Mr. Cleese, playing a policeman, is appalled. “Don’t you even take the bones out?”
So is Mr. Jones’s businessman. “If we took the bones out it wouldn’t be crunchy, would it?”
Mr. Jones also brought a distinct historical sensibility to the group, which was reflected in the sketches he wrote — and his future as a scholar of Chaucer and the Middle Ages. He wrote one sketch about Elizabethan pornography smugglers, and another, set during World War II, in which a joke is so funny it becomes a superweapon, banned by the Geneva Conventions, and even deadlier in German.
His style of writing — long, with visual flair and often wildly over the top — was wholly his own, Mr. Cleese said. “That was not something that any of the rest of us could do.”

Ten Interesting Haitian Novels:
Mouths Don't Speak by Katia D. Ulysse - No one was prepared for the massive earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010, taking over a quarter-million lives, and leaving millions more homeless. Three thousand miles away, Jacqueline Florestant mourns the presumed death of her parents, while her husband, a former US Marine and combat veteran, cares for their three-year-old daughter as he fights his own battles with acute PTSD. Horrified and guilt-ridden, Jacqueline returns to Haiti in search of the proverbial "closure." Unfortunately, the Haiti she left as a child twenty-five years earlier has disappeared. Her quest turns into a tornado of deception, desperation, and more death. So Jacqueline holds tightly to her daughter--the only one who must not die. (Goodreads)
Claire of the Sea Light by Edwidge Danticat - A stunning work of fiction that brings us deep into the intertwined lives of a small seaside town where a little girl, the daughter of a fisherman, has gone missing. From the best-selling author of Brother, I'm Dying and The Dew Breaker: a stunning new work of fiction that brings us deep into the intertwined lives of a small seaside town where a little girl, the daughter of a fisherman, has gone missing. Claire Limyè Lanmè - Claire of the Sea Light - is an enchanting child born into love and tragedy in Ville Rose, Haiti. Claire's mother died in childbirth, and on each of her birthdays Claire is taken by her father, Nozias, to visit her mother's grave. Nozias wonders if he should give away his young daughter to a local shopkeeper, who lost a child of her own, so that Claire can have a better life. But on the night of Claire's seventh birthday, when at last he makes the wrenching decision to do so, she disappears. As Nozias and others look for her, painful secrets, haunting memories, and startling truths are unearthed among the community of men and women whose individual stories connect to Claire, to her parents, and to the town itself. Told with piercing lyricism and the economy of a fable, Claire of the Sea Light is a tightly woven, breathtaking tapestry that explores what it means to be a parent, child, neighbor, lover, and friend, while revealing the mysterious bonds we share with the natural world and with one another. Embracing the magic and heartbreak of ordinary life, it is Edwidge Danticat's most spellbinding, astonishing book yet. (Goodreads)
Love, Anger, Madness: A Haitian Trilogy by Marie Vieux-Chauvet - In Love, Anger, Madness, Marie Vieux-Chauvet offers three slices of life under an oppressive regime. Gradually building in emotional intensity, the novellas paint a shocking portrait of families and artists struggling to survive under Haiti’s terrifying government restrictions that have turned its society upside down, transforming neighbors into victims, spies, and enemies. In “Love,” Claire is the eldest of three sisters who occupy a single house. Her dark skin and unmarried status make her a virtual servant to the rest of the family. Consumed by an intense passion for her brother-in-law, she finds redemption in a criminal act of rebellion. In “Anger,” a middle-class family is ripped apart when twenty-year-old Rose is forced to sleep with a repulsive soldier in order to prevent a government takeover of her father’s land. And in “Madness,” René, a young poet, finds himself trapped in a house for days without food, obsessed with the souls of the dead, dreading the invasion of local military thugs, and steeling himself for one final stand against authority. Sympathetic, savage and truly compelling with an insightful introduction by Edwidge Danticat, Love, Anger, Madness is an extraordinary, brave and graphic evocation of a country in turmoil. (Goodreads)
Breath, Eyes, Memory by Edwidge Danticat - At the age of twelve, Sophie Caco is sent from her impoverished village of Croix-des-Rosets to New York, to be reunited with a mother she barely remembers. There she discovers secrets that no child should ever know, and a legacy of shame that can be healed only when she returns to Haiti--to the women who first reared her. What ensues is a passionate journey through a landscape charged with the supernatural and scarred by political violence, in a novel that bears witness to the traditions, suffering, and wisdom of an entire people. (Goodreads)
Haiti Noir by Edwidge Danticat - Launched with the summer ’04 award-winning best seller Brooklyn Noir, Akashic Books continues its groundbreaking series of original noir anthologies. Each book is comprised of all-new stories, each one set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the city of the book. Featuring brand-new stories by: Edwidge Danticat, Rodney Saint-Éloi, Madison Smartt Bell, Gary Victor, M.J. Fievre, Marvin Victor, Yanick Lahens, Louis-Philippe Dalembert, Kettly Mars, Marie Ketsia Theodore-Pharel, Evelyne Trouillot, Katia Ulysse, Ibi Aanu Zoboi, Nadine Pinede, and others. Haiti has a tragic history and continues to be one of the most destitute places on the planet, especially in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake. Here, however, Danticat reveals that even while the subject matter remains dark, the caliber of Haitian writing is of the highest order. (Goodreads)
Moonbath by Yanick Lahens - The award-winning saga of a peasant family living in a small Haitian village, recounting through stories of tradition and superstition, voodoo, romance, and violence, the lives of four generations of women struggling to hold the family together in a volatile, roiling landscape of political turmoil and economic suffering. (Goodreads)
American Street by Ibi Zoboi - In this stunning debut novel, Pushcart-nominated author Ibi Zoboi draws on her own experience as a young Haitian immigrant, infusing this lyrical exploration of America with magical realism and vodou culture. On the corner of American Street and Joy Road, Fabiola Toussaint thought she would finally find une belle vie—a good life. But after they leave Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Fabiola’s mother is detained by U.S. immigration, leaving Fabiola to navigate her loud American cousins, Chantal, Donna, and Princess; the grittiness of Detroit’s west side; a new school; and a surprising romance, all on her own. Just as she finds her footing in this strange new world, a dangerous proposition presents itself, and Fabiola soon realizes that freedom comes at a cost. Trapped at the crossroads of an impossible choice, will she pay the price for the American dream? (Amazon)
Drifting by Katia D. Ulysse - Katia D. Ulysse's debut provides the rare opportunity to peer into the private lives of four secretive Haitian families. The interwoven narrative spans four decades--from 1970 through 2010--and drifts among various provinces in Haiti, the United States, churches, vodun temples, schools, strip clubs, and the grave. Ulysse introduces us to a childless Haitian American couple risking it all for a baby to call their own; a Florida-based predatory school teacher threatening students with deportation if they expose him; and the unforgettable Monsieur Boursicault, whose chain of funeral parlors makes him the wealthiest man in Haiti. This daring work of fiction is a departure from the standard narrative of political unrest on the island. Ulysse's characters are everyday people whose hopes for distant success are constantly challenged--but never totally swayed--by the hard realities accompanying the immigrant's journey. (Goodreads)
Clerise of Haiti By Marie-Thérèse Labossière Thomas - A young domestic worker devoted to her prominent urban employers in Les Cayes, Haiti, Clerise progressively renounces the traditional values of her rural background. When she later marries and opens a small business, class conflicts and divided loyalties develop amid the terror of the Duvalier regime, and she is ultimately caught in the escalation of violence. Clerise of Haiti is a story of three generations of Haitian women, and covers a thirty year span ending in the late 1970s. Full of humor and resilience, Clerise's unique perspective into the upper classes and the world of the poor explores the complexities of life in a provincial town and highlights the socioeconomic and political forces at play in Haiti. (Goodreads)
The Book of Emma by Marie-Célie Agnant - Confined to a psychiatric hospital following the murder of her young daughter, Emma Bratte refuses to speak any language but her mother tongue. Dr. MacLeod has brought in an interpreter, Flore, to help him evaluate Emma's fitness to stand trial. "Both crazy and too lucid," an articulate and knowledgeable Emma relates her long battle against despair, through striking images of her lonely but determined and creative struggle to win the love of a mother misled by a racist society and then through tales of the suffering and resistance of some of her female forebears. These narratives, which are both epic and dramatic, and their contrasting reception by the officious psychiatrist and the sensitive Flore, produce rich layers of experience and meaning in this concisely narrated work.
