y'know what? the first sign that Azula was a dragon was that she'd curl up on Ursa's bed and refuse to leave. like, just an immovable toddler when she wanted to sleep there. not a single winter night passed without a baby dragon in her bed, there was a whole conspiracy so Zuko nor Ozai would know of that. totally not inspired by how my dog will growl and throw a whole ass tantrum if I don't let her sleep in my bed when it's cold.

everyone knows the iconic post: daddy issues makes you a people pleaser and mommy issues make you a sociopath

anyways, i wanted to see if anyone else thought what my friend did so:

A three things I kind of liked about Ashes of the Academy

Ty Lee felt very much in character.

The flashbacks demonized Azula a lot, but present day Mai seemed to demonize Azula less than she had in previous comics and actually seemed to have at least some understanding and maybe sympathy toward her?

This is the first time since the show I think that official ATLA media has openly suggested that the Fire Nation's imperialist culture played a major role in shaping Azula to be who she is, rather than just resorting to "she's an evil psycho," "mommy issues," or maybe "daddy issues." I think the execution of this was terrible for multiple reasons, but the fact they even considered this is notesworthy.

Because they truly are alike even their downfalls were so parallel. I just knew watching Joo Seok-kyung that she'd be Ketuvian. Like I was so RIIIIIGHT and the Azula parallels are sending meeee my poor evil baby girls. Mommy issues. Daddy turned them into raging power-hungry monsters. Both have a brother who is far more redeemable.

These scenes parallel for me because this is what their relentlessness has led them to.

I feel like I was going crazy seeing the dark, overly ambitious, deeply insecure, megalomaniac trope for Ketuvians because they were supposed to be these spiritually inclined demotivated monks but now I'm standing on what I initially claimed forever now 😂

Also, Azula is literally the most skilled fighter, she could've easily ruled the world had she not been so power-hungry to the point of irrationality. Like I said before in my Ketu Themes post; these characters can be relentless about resources and materialism (due to lack, insecurity or emptiness), that they can easily be powerful and successful, but because of the nature of Ketu, that shit either drains them, possesses them or crumbles in the end.

Again, the downfall of Tony Montana and Daniel Plainview are a testament to this. Both portrayed by Ashwini natives. Both the films closing off with their deserved demise (There Will Be Blood being more hinted if anything), in a murderous psychotic breakdown.

Both characters had a rise to success from their 'businesses' which ate away at their soul, literally draining them and in turn they drain everyone else around them.

Thinking about Transmasc Azula and how he would basically plan out every possible scenario when coming out.

Bug out bag at the ready, burner phone, tazer, etc.

Question. Assuming a modern AU fire family that is wholesome. How would Urzai react?

How would Zuko react?

oh man, personally I don't think I'll ever be able to view ozai as a good person, so like fire family as wholesome to me is still kind of not great. but obviously not as bad as canon.

first I think he would tell zuko, totally not because he trusts him more ofc, but because he has blackmail on dear ol zuzu to make sure he doesnt snitch if he doesn't take it well.

zuko wouldn't even learn about the blackmail cuz he would be pretty accepting right off the bat. like to him this would be one of the few times his sibling is actually opening up to him instead of just messing with him like usual. so he would think of it like a secret mission to help his brother get guy stuff, que a blue spirit type montage. he'd probably even see if he could get black market testosterone or something crazy like that before zoryn put a stop to it lol.

I think that zuko, seeing his brother seemingly trust him with something serious would start to open up more as well about his own issues. which initially zoryn would be like why are u talking to me 😐 but eventually they would become closer.

which is ofc all a part of zoryns plan, after all their parents would be more likely to agree to his transition if zuko was backing him up! well okay only ursa, but still. and if things went totally wrong, he could probably now manipulate zuko into running away with him/get him kicked out as well. if he's gonna be worried about potential homelessness then it'll be better to be accompanied.

but that's like last case scenario cuz hes been squirreling money away for a while now, plus it's always possible to play on zukos friends sympathy and stay with them. not his friends because they're too dignified to take in some street urchin.

now as for urzai. in my mind a more wholesome modern au ozai would be a horrific combo of toxic sports dad and pta mom. like yknow he has 2 kids and wants them both to be super good at sports, enrolls them both in a bunch of different sports when they're super little etc. but hes seriously pissed that his firstborn son shows more talent on a theater stage than for any type of sport that isn't badminton. ozai fucking hates badminton, he thinks it's just lame tennis. (badminton would be modern au dao swords for zuko.)

but his daughter is crazy good at all these sports so hes very happy about that at least and puts all his pressure on her while ursa dotes on zuko and shares his passion for theater.

he would also be on the pta solely to petition for more funding for the schools sports teams lol

so less toxic than canon but still that obvious favoritism from each parent leading to a divide between the siblings.

as for how they take it. ozai is very much a "LGBTQ is a bunch of hooey" type guy, but also he is not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth. hes finally getting his perfect sport loving son! so his reaction is to immediately try and get him on hormones and pull him out of school for like a couple months till he "looks more manly" in ozais words. that way they can pretend that zoryn is just a cousin or something (theyd say azula went to a different private school in like Sweden or something) that way no one knows about the trans thing since ozai wouldn't like that associated with him. and ofc get him onto all of the mens sports teams because that is the most important thing to ozai.

ursa is overall more progressive but she takes it less well in zoryns eyes. like shes trying to talk both ozai and zoryn down from "going too fast" cuz shes one of those people who isnt properly transphobic but the idea of their little girl becoming a hairy guy is like. really jarring yknow. this ofc makes zoryns mommy issues worse and makes him even more attached to ozai. which is bad.

so overall theyd take it fine, but it would be pretty bad for zoryn in a way to become even more attached to such a toxic parent.

ok ok azutara headcanons GO:

these are not canon compliant cause we know how they meet and feel about each other and all that in canon lol

- azula isn’t evil by any means! yeah she’s a little bit of an asshole (or maybe a lot), but she was also a kid raised in an abusive household. katara on the other hand is a proud, self-proclaimed lovable asshole.

- they’ve been in the same social circle since they’re both kids of world leaders, but they weren’t fond of each other as kids.

- they forget about each other and meet again years later! when they’re adults, because you will never catch me writing an au where they’re 14. in canon, whatever. but i’m more comfortable writing characters closer to my age! you will also never catch me writing smut btw, it also makes me uncomfy.

- also azula has been in therapy since she became a legal adult and she has a good relationship with zuko because of it.

- so let’s say they meet again when they’re in their undergrad. neither of them recognize each other, both of em think of the other as “the smartass girl from my gen psych class”

- katara’s in bio pre-med but is 100% that girl that has three minors and a certificate in something. probably things like sociology, anthropology, women’s studies, etc.

- azula’s a business major. not by choice. i could definitely see her in something like forensic science or chemistry instead.

- anyways, they have a shared gen ed class and both of em are really into it because they both have mommy issues! which is why when they’re forced to work together on a project they decide they hate each other again.

- they realize that they knew each other in childhood when zuko and sokka walk into the water siblings’ shared apartment while katara and azula are fighting over making a powerpoint.

- katara makes an offhand comment about ozai being an asshole and azula just. loses it. bursts out crying. and katara’s there panicking like “oh my god what do i DO”

- katara ends up comforting azula and opens up about her mom to try and make azula feel less alone in the family trauma department. azula thinks she’s a dumbass but in a tsundere way where she secretly respects katara but won’t admit it.

- after that the two of em start hanging out out of class more often and (shocking, i know) enjoying each other’s presence

- katara realizes she has a crush first. it happens when they go to present their project and katara freezes up out of nowhere (which is so out of character for her) and azula immediately picks up her sentence and helps katara get through her part of the presentation

- so disaster bi katara ends up pining for at least a year because azula’s a dumbass who is subzero in flirting skills and completely oblivious

- azula’s also completely unaware that she’s gay as hell

- so azula realizes that she likes women…no not women…katara…at some sort of banquet where azula’s receiving a scholarship or smth and katara starts cheering for her from the audience (azula was tense, katara lightened the mood)

- so azula’s on stage having her gay awakening like “oh my god i’m in love with this dumbass who’s making a scene at this formal event and oh my god…” and as soon as she gets off stage she grabs katara’s hand and pulls her outside

- katara’s panicking and thinking azula’s pissed and goes to apologize but azula just. kisses her.

- katara’s immediate reaction is “fckin took you long enough”

- azula immediately goes red and is like “kat i realized i was gay less than five minutes ago please let me live”

- and therefore is subject to teasing for the rest of her life. the end.

Listen, I haven't read any of the atla books or comics so I'm making no claim as to knowing what happens in those, but these tags from @bloody-wonder got me thinking about azula redemption and her mommy issues and more importantly her daddy issues. Because wouldn't it be much more interesting to see azula finally come to a reckoning with her dad being an abusive piece of shit? Wouldn't that help her make longer strides towards a true redemption? Are we seriously still going with the idea that Ursa is the only reason or even the majority reason that azula is The Way She Is?

Like. Of course Azula needed to deal with her mommy issues, of course they needed to address those in the comics, but I'm of the opinion that those are much easier addressed than the issues her father would have given her. And maybe the comics do address those issues, again, I make no claim to know what's happened in any of those lmao but Azula realizing her dad is an abusive piece of shit and unlearning all the harmful stuff he taught her has to be a more compelling storyline (and much better redemption storyline at that) than her dealing with tepid mommy issues over and over

An Avatar Azula AU has been on my mind. I mean, the potential for character exploration and development would be great

Azula being conflicted and angry because her entire life she's done everything right to be her fathers favourite and serve her nation, only to discover she was born public enemy number one this entire time and now Ozai will want to kill her if or when he finds out

Now she's automatically worse than Zuko. Like, way worse. Ozai is gonna do way worse than burn her entire face when he finds out

Ontop of that, you could bring the whole Azula thinking she's a monster into it. Like the way she treats people and makes them afraid of her, and she has to confront that in the AU, but she also happens to be pretty brutal in the Avatar state (and outside of it) during fights, so she then has to deal with being inherently scarey to the people she's grown to want the trust and friendship of

And then she's wondering if her mother was always right about her, and if she could see how much of a monster Azula truly was, and that's why she looked at her with so much fear and "contempt" and kept her distance
