A large part of what made me realise I'm probably non-binary is fanfiction. Not even specifically reading it, but the fact that no cis-gendered person writes as many fanfics about trans characters as I do. I mean it's not a huge deal for me and doesn't affect my day to day life. I'm more non-binary in the sense that I just don't care how people refer to me (that's a them problem), in my head I'm just me, no pronouns. I relate to the trans experience and a lot of the dysphoria, but enby is the closest thing to what I feel (I remember vividly the moment I realised that I would in fact be no more comfortable as a man than I am as a woman).

The label does not define you. You define the label.

The point of a label is not to be a checklist you have to follow exactly to be able to apply it. The point of a label is to put your experience into words so you can communicate it more easily to others (and yourself!)

"Can I call myself x if I-" Yes! If you feel like that word best suits you and your experience, then that is what it does.

You may, of course, encounter people who use a different definition (see: bisexuality) and you might have a misunderstanding over it. You know, like it happens all the time with every word in every language (see: biannual). In that case, you clarify your definitions to each other and go on your merry ways.

Labels are our attempt to categorize what we feel; something that often goes beyond the limits of language. Just pick what vibes with you and let others do the same.
