Dye-cember-2018 Challenge 4 - Tankette
Jedi Master Tankette, belonging to me, as drawn by @awdplace / Andrew Dickman. It's admittedly a rather buxom version of her, but that is his art style, and I rather enjoy it. Kinda feels a bit cartoony, and that's always fun. :D

So I've been getting back into Megaman as of late and I wanted to pay tribute to one of my bigger inspirations.
@awdplace back around middle school some of his animations began to float around youtube and I fell in love with his interpretations for the robot masters (especially Woodman). I think Andrew is one of the few artists back then that I truly admired and I wanted to make animations just like his...or course I was a lazy bastard then so I never actually finished any. Well Its a bit around the time when I first started watching his animations and I've gotten quite proud of my artistic abilities so I decided to give my favorite masters a quick draw. I attempted a slightly cartoony style in what I can only call my best attempt at and "Andrew Dickman" style.

That's the MAMA LUIGI Collab to you, Mario! - Kirblog 9/5/17
Check out "The Mama Luigi Project" - Super Mario World Reanimated Collab! (YouTube) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liqrfUYsOtA (Newgrounds) http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/698654
One week ago today, a cool little project I had the pleasure of being part of released: the "Mama Luigi" Super Mario World Re-Animated Collab, which featured several hundred artists banded together to bring you some hilariously awesome animation based on the legendarily meme-worthy episode of the Mario World cartoon show. I'm joined this week by collab organizer Andrew Dickman to talk about our memories of the 90's Mario cartoons, their resurgence in popularity thanks to a plethora of YouTube Poops and how we got together to work on this project for the past solid year! If you haven't already checked it out, please do and then listen on!

I don't normally tell stories like these, but after this one happened, it struck me as surreal enough that I had to share it.
I follow a bunch of artists on tumblr, but there aren't many I'd say I'm really a "fan" of. One I am a fan of is Andrew Dickman at @awdplace (@awdtwit on Twitter). I didn’t really know much about his work until somebody linked to his Animated Anarchy podcast a couple of years ago. I don’t remember when it was exactly, but I know that the Hotel Transylvania 2 episode was one of the most recent ones, so I guess late 2015. I figured it would just be another one of those shows where two guys riff on old movies (ala Rewatchability), so it really surprised me to learn that the two guys were professional animators who talked about the kind of behind the scenes stuff that goes on in making an animated movie. They were sincerely appreciative of Hotel Transylvania 2, a film that I had pretty much written off as not that great after watching it in theaters. I also never saw the first one, so that might not have helped. And they made good points! Good enough points that I kind of came around a little bit on the film!
Of course, what REALLY blew my mind was when they did an episode on Twice Upon a Time, a film that has a special place in my childhood. I’m sure I’m dating myself a bit, here, but I vividly remember seeing this movie as an extremely young child. Like, before kindergarten young. Some searches on google tell me that the movie was on HBO in the mid-80′s, so that may have been when I saw it. But I remember NOTHING about the movie except for the big gorilla monster with a TV for a head. Which I’m pretty sure isn’t exactly what the guy was, but that’s sure as hell how I remembered him! And for probably fifteen years, I’d suddenly remember that big fucker and try hard to google up what he was from, with no results. I started to think maybe I fever dreamed it.
(The One Electronic, from Rice Boy, really fucked with my head for this reason. It made me wonder if maybe TV-headed dudes were just, like, common somehow??)
So to hear a podcast on this movie from my extremely early childhood was pretty incredible. I guess that’s all I can say about that.
At any rate, I became enough of a fan to buy this three-piece print/poster set from his online store:
I’m sure it’s not good for them to have heavy weights on them, and I think I may have just accidentally torn the big one a little bit (that or the tear was already there, I mean, it’s definitely got a tear in it), but my current apartment has such shitty paint on the walls that I can’t actually hang these up and so they just sit in the cardboard tube that they came in most of the time. Someday I’ll have a house! I swear! Then I’ll hang it up!
I also pledged to his patreon on and off a few times, including the most recent time when it ended somewhat abruptly in October. Ah well.
And lastly, just, like, last month, the YouTube algorithm seemed to think I wanted to rewatch damn near everything on his channel, which I didn’t discover until after the podcast despite having been an avid Channel Awesome follower back when he was still doing videos for them (I currently am not). I guess I just wasn’t paying much attention?
So now that I’ve given waaaaay too much background, here’s the actually important part of the story. Last night I was lucky enough to catch him streaming artwork, and I just sort of hung out in the stream for probably forty minutes or so. At one point, talking stream-of-consciousness, Andrew mentioned that there was an old Ninja Turtles anime where Shredder says “How impolite of you bastards?” with a question mark. But Andrew was pretty sure that was mistranslated.
What Andrew had no way of knowing is that I live for this shit. I never became a professional translator, but I’ve spent enough years studying to be one that little things like this are exactly the kind of things I just can’t let slide. I jumped (figuratively) into action. I had to know what Shredder actually said, if anything.
First google search: “How impolite of you bastards.” First result: a review of the second episode of Mutant Turtles: Choujin Densetsu Hen. The line is quoted. Okay. Somebody thinks Shredder said this for real in an actual anime.
Second google search: mutant turtles anime streaming. Result: a link to kissanime.yt, a site I’ve never visited, though I recognize the format of the URL from having visited various other kisscartoon and kissmanga sites. Only two episodes of the Turtles anime are listed, but that’s all I need, and, apparently, all that there are. I click the link to episode 2 and begin scrubbing back and forth until I find the line.
You can watch the whole thing if you want, but I can’t in good conscience say that you should. The show is not good at all. The line in question occurs at the 12:49 mark. There, now you don’t have to search for it like I did.
What he yells is “こりゃ!失敬だぞ、貴様ら!” or “Korya! Shikkei da zo, kisamara!”
I’m gonna be honest. My Japanese is rusty from years of nonuse outside of, well, this kind of shit, and even my two weeks in Japan earlier this year and all of the studying I’ve done before and after haven’t made me fluent. I speak and read at a middle-school level. And not even, like, high middle school. So I didn’t understand what 失敬 was. I thought he was just saying “Shikke,” without that “i” at the end.
But if he was calling them “impolite,” I do know one better word for that: shitsurei, or 失礼 if you’re feeling nasty. Was he just saying a slang, rough, or impolite word for shitsurei?
Third google search: しっけ 失礼. First result: a thesaurus. There was my answer, second from the top: 失敬, or shikkei, meaning rude or impolite.
Okay. So I have all of the pieces. How do I translate this sentence?
“Korya!” just means “Hey!” and is a way to try to get somebody’s attention. It is super casual, the kind of tough thing that a tough guys says. You would not say this in a business meeting. You would say this if you were a thug sent to intimidate a guy and the guy was ignoring you.
“Shikkei,” as I just established, means “rude” or “impolite.”
“Da zo” is a very rough and tough and not polite at all way to end a sentence with emphasis. “Zo” is sort of a spoken exclamation mark, like “yo.” So “Shikkei da zo” is a tough guy’s way of saying “That’s really rude!” Or, if you’re in a hurry to translate something and don’t care very much, “How impolite.”
Side story: my first year of studying Japanese in college, I paired up with a friend of mine to do a speech for the class. It was supposed to be on planning an event. We decided do two two gimmicks for our speech: I would speak super politely and he super plainly, and the event was to be his brother’s birthday party, which he forgot all about. When we went to the professor and shared our work after a day, he thought it was hilarious. Not for the reasons we wanted, though; he thought we were pretending to be two Yakuza. He was a low-ranking thug worried about offending his “big brother” (a higher-ranking Yakuza), and I was the clean-cut prim and proper businessman who organized events like, well, birthday parties. He sat with us for an hour fine-tuning our speech to include all kinds of Yakuza-isms, including ending every sentence we could with things like “da zo” and “da ze.”
Additional side note: “da zo” and “da ze” don’t necessarily mean you’re a tough Yakuza type. Pokemon’s tagline, “Gotta catch ‘em all,” is “Getto da ze!” in Japanese.
Back to the main story. “Kisamara” is a plain plural form of “Kisama,” the rudest and meanest second-person pronoun in Japanese. It literally means “You,” but is often translated as “you bastard” due to it being very vulgar and rude in Japanese. There aren’t a lot of real curse words in Japanese, but this is one that fills the role. By putting it at the end of the sentence, “Kisamara” makes it clear who Shredder is talking to, but it’s not the “standard” way of speaking.
For example, in English, I could say “Andrew Dickman seems like a decent guy,” or I could say “Seems like a decent guy, that Andrew Dickman.” Both make perfect sense, but the second one reverses the word order to put emphasis on different parts of the sentence. Same with Japanese. As that same professor I mentioned earlier once told me, once you know all of the rules of grammar, you can learn all the ways to break them and still have your sentence be perfectly correct and understandable.
So. “Hey! That’s really rude, you bastards!” is how I would have translated Shredder’s line.
That’s the takeaway here.
“How impolite of you bastards!” is also, I think, totally acceptable, but doesn’t really capture all of the connotations of what Shredder is saying. He’s trying to sound really mean and threatening, but calling a group of people “shikkei” like that makes him sound childish and peeved. Like he’s personally offended and thinks that they should be taking him way more seriously than they are.
I’m done. I spent nearly forty minutes writing this. It took me probably ten or so to do all of the research and translation I just wrote about, haha. That’s...how it goes, I guess.
I left the stream probably fifteen minutes later. It was 10:30 PM and I was tired. That’s how it is in the EST timezone.
