For weeks, my daughter's questioned me about my birthday in various abstract ways. ”What are you doing for your birthday? What would you like for your birthday?” I answered somewhat vaguely. “I'm not sure--I don't have any special plans. Not sure what I would like for my birthday – Except, another birthday.”  It seemed to me that my birthday had sent my daughter's into a tailspin. Apparently, they decided between themselves, that my birthday should include something different. So they went into a plan mode. I asked my youngest twin daughter, “Can I get dressed up?” Her answer: “No mommy, don't be extra.  Dress casual that would be fine.” “Because I was in the dress up mood, the sound of casual just did not sit well with me. Then my sister began asking me about my birthday. “What are you doing for your birthday? Where are you going for your birthday? What kind of gifts did you ask the kids? The questions were endless. While paying bills, I found out that my favorite dress store on City Line Avenue, in Bala Cynwyd “Dress Barn” was closing. Half of the store was 50% off the lowest ticket price. So for my special day, I decided I would give myself some new garments--I was happy. When I returned home, I shared with my daughter the purchases I had made. She basically approved one of the tops that I could wear on Saturday, It had a little bling, so again – I was happy. When the day had arrived, I looked pretty in my casual top. It was raining outside, but I was all sunshine inside. At 1:00 p.m., we, my daughters, my eight year old granddaughter and my nine month old grandson, drove not far from the house to arrive at a local Arts Center. Walking down the steps of this place, which I had never heard of, did not give me good vibes. As we entered this huge lower-level basement / room, we were greeted by young lady who was the host of the event.  She began to explain that for the price of the tickets, we could select the options of making jewelry, learning to make lip gloss, painting a picture with directions, or making slime. Making slime? I asked myself. What kind of establishment is this? It turns out  that this place was the idea of the girls had for doing something different. It was supposed to be vendors set up with jewelry, homemade hand and body products, and handless drink containers, Avon®, Mary Kay®, a henna designer, slime making tables for children, Paint Party setups for anyone and homemade food and beverage vendors I have a notorious reputation for my facial expressions, so I tried very hard not to have any expression at all. I just watched the disappointment in my daughters’ faces. Half of the vendors that were supposed to be at the event were late arriving and setting up. All of the free things that were to come with the ticket price were either not available, or you had to pay for everything else that you wanted. One of my girls spotted in Indian lady, who was drawing henna on people's hands. In excitement, she said, “Mommy, why don't you get henna on your hand... That would be something different. I will pay.”  The thought intrigued me, especially since I knew that  it was not permanent. So I looked on Google to find some henna designs and sat down for my first experience.  The young lady did a beautiful job and I was pleased.  There was also a Paparazzi $5 jewelry representative.  I bought a set and my daughter bought me another set.. Again, I was happy. I admired my youngest daughter's lipstick, so my oldest daughter bought me the same shade from the Avon® lady who not only shared my name... Victoria, but her mother's birthday was the same day as mine. My girls insisted that I not eat, because when we were to leave this place, we would be dining.  It was a different thing to do for my birthday, but will not be repeated according to them. We traveled to West Philadelphia to my sister's house supposedly to pick up a gift for my daughter's friend. I planned on sitting in the car.

My daughter insisted that I come in and take care of Mother Nature's issues because it might be a while before we got to our dining destination. Upon entering my sister's home, I heard “Surprise”.  My sister was in on the day-long plan. She had a special dinner for me and my guest. But the surprise was the deep dish peach cobbler she made that adorned with birthday candles. Her server was full of gifts. To top off my day, as a result of my birthday celebration, the favors they were given out to everyone included a book called “When God Winks”: As a result, even my late mother’s spirit was a part of the festivities. We started a book club called ”Sarah's reading Circle”. I have to say, this was the best day of my life so far.

She kept the oddest mementos as well - a wax candle shaped like a seal that I bought at Marine Land when I was in grade school, First Communion certificates from my aunts and uncles, old purses, empty Avon perfume bottles from the 70s... just stuff. I picked that bad habit up from her, but have long since gotten over it. Don't get me wrong, I don't like a sterile environment, but I've de-cluttered an awful lot over the years.
