The Wallflower Wager. By Tessa Dare. Avon, 2019.
Rating: 3/5 stars
Genre: historical romance
Series: Girl Meets Duke #3
Summary: Wealthy and ruthless, Gabriel Duke clawed his way from the lowliest slums to the pinnacle of high society—and now he wants to get even.
Loyal and passionate, Lady Penelope Campion never met a lost or wounded creature she wouldn’t take into her home and her heart.
When her imposing—and attractive—new neighbor demands she clear out the rescued animals, Penny sets him a challenge. She will part with her precious charges, if he can find them loving homes.
Done, Gabriel says. How hard can it be to find homes for a few kittens?
And a two-legged dog.
And a foul-mouthed parrot.
And a goat, an otter, a hedgehog . . .
Easier said than done, for a cold-blooded bastard who wouldn’t know a loving home from a workhouse. Soon he’s covered in cat hair, knee-deep in adorable, and bewitched by a shyly pretty spinster who defies his every attempt to resist. Now she’s set her mind and heart on saving him.
Not if he ruins her first.
***Fullnreview below.***
Content Warnings: graphic sexual content, references to bullying
Overview: I read this book a few weeks ago but forgot to write a review. So here we are. I genrally like Tessa Dare, so I decided to continue on with this series that I started a while back. Overall, this installment didn't wow me as much as some of her other books. While I liked the kind-hearted protagonist, I also felt like Dare could have used her themes better, so for that reason, this book only gets 3 stars from me.
Writing: I don't have much new to say about the prose in this book compared to the prose of Dare's others. It's quick, easy to understand, and balances showing and telling well, all while inserting a lot of Dare's characteristic humor. If I had any criticism, I would say that some of the humor in this book didn't land quite as well for me personally. But your mileage may vary, so don't take my word as gold.
Plot: The non-romance plot of this book follows Gabriel Duke, a rogue who has made his fortune by financially ruining members of the upper class and profiting off their losses. Gabe has recently come into possession of a house in a rather fashionable part of town, and given that it sits next door to a lady's residence, he anticipates it will sell for quite a lot of money.
The lady in question, however, is Lady Penelope Campion - a spinster who uses her property as a haven for dozens of sick, disabled, and otherwise rejected animals. When Penny's aunt gives her an ultimatum on behalf of Penny's brother (get rid of your animals and rejoin fashionable society of you want to stay in London), Penny and Gabe make a pact that is sure to benefit both of them: rehome the animals and not only will Penny get to stay, but Gabe's property will be all the more attractive.
The parts I liked most in this plot were moments when Penny pushed back against Gabe's plans or when Gabe stood up to other people on Penny's behalf. I love an independent heroine with a strong sense of what's right, and I like when heroes with obvious flaws show that disreapecting women isn't one of them.
However, there were also a few things that didn't work for me. For one, Gabe's battle with indoor plumbing felt a little too silly, and I think a lot more could have been done to engage with the idea of modernity in this book. For two, Penny and Gabe seem to rehome the animals way too easily and with very little emotional reaction from Penny, which made them feel less important. For three, the subplot between Hammond (the architect) and Mrs. Burns (the housekeeper) felt a little random and didn't really compliment the main plot.
Characters: Penny, our heroine, is rather easy to like because she is so big-hearted and cares deeply for broken things. While these qualities are good on their own, they are made more endearing once the reader discovers that Penny had a rough upbringing; her soft heart in spite of the troubles she faced is incredibly inspiring, and I loved that she opened herself up to others - not just to Gabe, but to her closest friends.
Gabe, our hero, is a little gruff and stubborn, but he did have moments when that facade cracked. I liked him best in the moments where he defended Penny's right to make her own decisions. His callousness towards the animals did grate on me sometimes, and I think not enough was made of the fact that he tried to hire actors to trick Penny into giving her animals away faster, but it was clear by the end that he came to understand Penny's care, so I guess it was fine in the long run.
Supporting characters were fine, though none of them blew me away. I enjoyed Penny's friendships with the other wallflowers, and the husbands were kind of charming in their fierce loyalty and protectiveness. The only characters that seemed underdeveloped were Hammond and Mrs. Burns; I can't for the life of me decide whether their subplot was inserted for laughs or for something else, but whatever the reason, they felt random and didn't compliment the others at all.
Romance: Gabe and Penny's romance was ok; not my favorite, but not the worst either. I liked that they worked together to achieve the same goal, even if their motivations were different, and I liked that Gabe was constantly torn between his desire for financial gain and his attraction to Penny.
However, I do think Dare could have put more pressure on the thematic connection between Penny's care for rejected animals and Gabe's past. While I did like that Dare didn't overdo this connection, it also felt like a non-issue, and I think more could have been done.
Moreover, I think Gabe abandoned his economic goals a little too quickly, and more inner conflict would have made the romance more angsty. It also would have helped the narrative flow better towards the end, when Gabe shows he hasn't completely abandoned his old ways. I rather liked the end conflict and thought it brought a lot of concerns to a head, but it would have been nice if the lead up was spread more diffusely throughout the rest of the narrative.
TL;DR: Tessa Dare's The Wallflower Wager is charming in some respects, but doesn't quite dig deeply into the themes it introduces. The kind-hearted heroine and fiercely loyal friend group makes this book worth the read, however, even if I personally found the romance to be a bit silly and narratively lacking.

Roller coaster, as in... currently it’s Jan 5, 2021 @11:58 PM, listening to “akala mo” sang by Ronnie Liang - original artist Aiza Seguerra.
Again, for the information about Covid19, I would recommend you readers to go to the website of World Health Organization, for accurate measures of the said virus
https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019
Good thing is kinausap naman ako ng supervisor namin, balak niya daw ako iassign sa another project after nitong current, social media works... Hindi ko alam kung pano galawan dun. Mahigpit na bilin lang sakin ng sup ko, wag ko daw muna ipaalam sa iba kasi hindi pa siya sure. Tinanong niya lang ako kung gusto ko ba. Umoo ako, kasi wala pa naman akong malilipatan after Jan 26. Thank you po Lord :’)
Ayun pang umaga work niya, nakulitan sakin. Taena panghigh school na problema to ehh, bakit ko to pinoproblema ngayon...
“Akala mo”.
Akala mo, hindi ko pansin,
Akala mo, hindi ko alam,
Mahal mo nga ako kahit hindi mo man sabihin,
Akala mo hindi ko napansin,
Wew, eto na naman ako, sabi ko malungkot, bakit pucha yung lyrics ng kantang to nagkakameaning hahahaha!!!
Di bale, tulog ko muna to, upload then edit ulit. Baliw amp XD

It was my birthday
By: Victoria Huggins Peurifoy © January 8, 2019
For weeks, my daughter's questioned me about my birthday in various abstract ways. ”What are you doing for your birthday? What would you like for your birthday?” I answered somewhat vaguely. “I'm not sure--I don't have any special plans. Not sure what I would like for my birthday – Except, another birthday.” It seemed to me that my birthday had sent my daughter's into a tailspin. Apparently, they decided between themselves, that my birthday should include something different. So they went into a plan mode. I asked my youngest twin daughter, “Can I get dressed up?” Her answer: “No mommy, don't be extra. Dress casual that would be fine.” “Because I was in the dress up mood, the sound of casual just did not sit well with me. Then my sister began asking me about my birthday. “What are you doing for your birthday? Where are you going for your birthday? What kind of gifts did you ask the kids? The questions were endless. While paying bills, I found out that my favorite dress store on City Line Avenue, in Bala Cynwyd “Dress Barn” was closing. Half of the store was 50% off the lowest ticket price. So for my special day, I decided I would give myself some new garments--I was happy. When I returned home, I shared with my daughter the purchases I had made. She basically approved one of the tops that I could wear on Saturday, It had a little bling, so again – I was happy. When the day had arrived, I looked pretty in my casual top. It was raining outside, but I was all sunshine inside. At 1:00 p.m., we, my daughters, my eight year old granddaughter and my nine month old grandson, drove not far from the house to arrive at a local Arts Center. Walking down the steps of this place, which I had never heard of, did not give me good vibes. As we entered this huge lower-level basement / room, we were greeted by young lady who was the host of the event. She began to explain that for the price of the tickets, we could select the options of making jewelry, learning to make lip gloss, painting a picture with directions, or making slime. Making slime? I asked myself. What kind of establishment is this? It turns out that this place was the idea of the girls had for doing something different. It was supposed to be vendors set up with jewelry, homemade hand and body products, and handless drink containers, Avon®, Mary Kay®, a henna designer, slime making tables for children, Paint Party setups for anyone and homemade food and beverage vendors I have a notorious reputation for my facial expressions, so I tried very hard not to have any expression at all. I just watched the disappointment in my daughters’ faces. Half of the vendors that were supposed to be at the event were late arriving and setting up. All of the free things that were to come with the ticket price were either not available, or you had to pay for everything else that you wanted. One of my girls spotted in Indian lady, who was drawing henna on people's hands. In excitement, she said, “Mommy, why don't you get henna on your hand... That would be something different. I will pay.” The thought intrigued me, especially since I knew that it was not permanent. So I looked on Google to find some henna designs and sat down for my first experience. The young lady did a beautiful job and I was pleased. There was also a Paparazzi $5 jewelry representative. I bought a set and my daughter bought me another set.. Again, I was happy. I admired my youngest daughter's lipstick, so my oldest daughter bought me the same shade from the Avon® lady who not only shared my name... Victoria, but her mother's birthday was the same day as mine. My girls insisted that I not eat, because when we were to leave this place, we would be dining. It was a different thing to do for my birthday, but will not be repeated according to them. We traveled to West Philadelphia to my sister's house supposedly to pick up a gift for my daughter's friend. I planned on sitting in the car.
My daughter insisted that I come in and take care of Mother Nature's issues because it might be a while before we got to our dining destination. Upon entering my sister's home, I heard “Surprise”. My sister was in on the day-long plan. She had a special dinner for me and my guest. But the surprise was the deep dish peach cobbler she made that adorned with birthday candles. Her server was full of gifts. To top off my day, as a result of my birthday celebration, the favors they were given out to everyone included a book called “When God Winks”: As a result, even my late mother’s spirit was a part of the festivities. We started a book club called ”Sarah's reading Circle”. I have to say, this was the best day of my life so far.

For the week of 21 January 2019
Quick Bits:
Aquaman #44 continues “Unspoken Water” from Kelly Sue DeConnick, Robson Rocha, Daniel Henriques, Sunny Gho, and Clayton Cowles. This story feels a lot like some of the ‘80s DC reimaginings that came on the heels of Crisis on Infinite Earths, playing with the mythology in a new way while approaching the narrative from oblique angles. Definitely an interesting revelation about the people on the island. Rocha, Henriques, and Gho are probably doing some of the best art of their careers.
| Published by DC Comics
Avengers #13 gives us the origin of the 1 million BC Iron Fist from Jason Aaron, Andrea Sorrentino, Justin Ponsor, Erick Arciniega, and Cory Petit. The artwork from Sorrentino, Ponsor, and Arciniega is gorgeous, capturing some of the feel that David Aja brought to K’un-Lun in The Immortal Iron Fist.
| Published by Marvel
Batman #63 continues to attempt to break your brain as “Knightmares” continues with Mikel Janín and Jordie Bellaire joining Tom King and Clayton Cowles for the fun. This one gives another possible explanation for what’s going on as John Constantine warns Bruce and Selina of what’s going to happen in their domestic bliss.
| Published by DC Comics
Blossoms 666 #1 is kind of a slow-burn opener, intent on easing the reader into the surprises of this type of horror, which somewhat works against the back cover blurb and solicitation copy, but eh. Still, some great character work from Cullen Bunn building Cheryl and Jason. And the artwork from Lauren Braga and Matt Herms is perfect.
| Published by Archie Comics / Archie Horror
Cover #5 kind of sets us up for a conclusion next issue. Kind of. It’s more character building, anecdotes from comics conventions, and exploration of the art form through various means that has elevated the series from the beginning from Brian Michael Bendis, David Mack, Michael Avon Oeming, Zu Orzu, and Carlos Mangual. The Ninja Sword comic sequences this issue are particularly great.
| Published by DC Comics / Jinxworld
The Curse of Brimstone Annual #1 offers three stories, one focusing on Brimstone and two fleshing out adversaries Detritus and Wandering Jack. Great art throughout from Mike Perkins, Neil Edwards, John Stanisci, Denys Cowan, Donald Hudson, and Rain Beredo.
| Published by DC Comics
Crypt of Shadows #1 is one of the one-shot revivals of old titles for Marvel’s 80th anniversary from Al Ewing, Garry Brown, Stephen Green, Djibril Morissette-Pham, Chris O’Halloran, and Travis Lanham. It’s pretty great, presenting two short stories embedded in a framing narrative, reminiscent of the old horror anthologies.
| Published by Marvel
Die!Die!Die! #7 is more balls to the wall action and insanity from Robert Kirkman, Scott Gimple, Chris Burnham, Nathan Fairbairn, and Rus Wooton. It’s the battle between Lipshitz and Barnaby that has been building for a while now and, well, it’s violent, bloody, and brutal as you’d expect. Also, cats.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Freedom Fighters #2 is mostly some vague teasers of things to come and one giant, flashy fight sequence, but it’s an entertaining fight sequence. The art from Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, and Adriano Lucas really get to do the heavy lifting in this story and it shines.
| Published by DC Comics
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2 proves that the first issue wasn’t a fluke, with Tom Taylor, Juann Cabal, Nolan Woodard, and Travis Lanham providing another highly entertaining, very funny, beautifully illustrated story. Taylor captures Peter’s voice incredibly well.
| Published by Marvel
Go-Bots #3 jumps a bit in the narrative, with a team of astronauts aboard Spay-C discovering Gobotron, where a decidedly authoritarian Leader-1 is taking some draconian measures to keep the Guardians in line, while still fending off Cy-Kill and his minions. Tom Scioli keeps us off-balance a bit for what’s going on and it adds a nice tension to the story. Also, the locking mechanism for the prison cell is a nice touch of nostalgia.
| Published by IDW
Guardians of the Galaxy #1 is a great debut from Donny Cates, Geoff Shaw, Marte Gracia, and Cory Petit, setting up a new post-Infinity Wars Marvel cosmic standard. There’s a good deal of action and humour through this as Thanos’ wake leads to many of the cosmic “heroes” pledging a path to an odd bloodbath--with a large amount of Earth-based heroes as possible targets--and a heist of his body by the Black Order (who’ve also stolen Knowhere) before anything can get underway. This is probably one of the stranger “gathering of the team” stories, but it gets it out of the way in a fascinating manner to hit the ground running next issue. The art from Shaw and Gracia is suitably epic.
| Published by Marvel
Hardcore #2 has some very nice art from Alessandro Vitti and Adriano Lucas, as Drake finds he has his hands full with both Markus trying to fully take over the Hardcore program and the criminal organization he was trying to take down being on to him. Both trying to kill him. Lots of entertaining action in this one.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Hellboy and the BPRD: 1956 #3 brings up some interesting history questions for the Bureau and certain locations we already know about, as Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson’s script continues to dovetail some already existing knowledge of history.
| Published by Dark Horse
High Heaven #5 conclude season one of this series as well, leaving David exactly where he wished to be, but finding out it’s not necessarily what it’s cracked up to be. Tom Peyer, Greg Scott, Andy Troy, and Rob Steen have really been delivering a bitingly funny take on the afterlife here. Also another fun Hashtag: Danger short from Peyer and Chris Giarrusso. I’m glad that this one is going to be graduating to its own feature for Ahoy’s second wave of books. And the issue is rounded out by the usual prose stories and text pieces.
| Published by Ahoy
Immortal Hulk #12 is a tough one. Even as Hulk travels deeper into the heart of Hell and Al Ewing continues to wax philosophical in the narration about the nature of evil and the concept of the devil or an opposite to god in comparative religions, we get a hard look at Bruce’s upbringing and the abuse that he suffered at the hands of his father. It’s a difficult read as his father tries to justify his abusive actions, but it’s one hell of a character study. Great guest art on the flashbacks from Eric Nguyen to complement the main story’s art from regulars Joe Bennett and Ruy José, with colours from Paul Mounts. It’s astonishing the heights that this run is hitting, one of the best Marvel is publishing.
| Published by Marvel
Justice League #16 concludes “Escape from Hawkworld” from Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Jim Cheung, Stephen Segovia, Mark Morales, Tomeu Morey, Wil Quintana, and Tom Napolitano. It’s very much a lore dump, with the Martian Keep telling J’onn about the multiverse before and of Perpetua, along with some interesting and complicated other revelations, but it’s rather interesting.
| Published by DC Comics
Livewire #2 sees Amanda captured, beaten, and mutilated by mercenary bigots at the behest of the US government to figure out a new way to control and neuter psiots. It’s always interesting that these people think they’re doing the “right thing” to justify their genocide. Very impressive artwork from Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín as always. Allén and Martín‘s choices for layouts, colours, even panel-styles lead to some very interesting visual storytelling.
| Published by Valiant
Low Road West #5 concludes the series, but leaves enough doors open for more somewhere down the line. This has been a very strange series, starting as a kind of post-America future and then tossing in some alternate reality weird western body horror stuff out there. All throughout with some inventive and unique artwork from Flaviano and Miquel Muerto.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Man Without Fear #4 presents us with the bedside manner of Kingpin from Jed MacKay, Paolo Villanelli, Andres Mossa, and Clayton Cowles. I really like Villanelli’s art here, which seems to be channelling the spirit of Chris Samnee.
| Published by Marvel
Naomi #1 is an incredibly beautiful comic. Jamal Campbell has really gone out of his way to craft a gorgeous first issue, perfectly balancing the ordinary, everyday people of Port Oswego, Oregon and the disruption caused by the superheroics of Superman bouncing through in a battle with Mongul. Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker, Campbell, and Josh Reed have something interesting here, working at the fringes of the DC Universe from the perspective of ordinary people, and ordinary people not living in a Metropolis or Gotham at that.
| Published by DC Comics / Wonder Comics
Oliver #1 is an amazing debut from Gary Whitta, Darick Robertson, Diego Rodriguez, and Simon Bowland. It’s worth it alone just for Robertson and Rodriguez’s extremely beautiful, detailed artwork, bringing to life a bombed out, desolate London in stunning detail, but then the story hooks you. There’s a mystery to Oliver’s identity and lineage that pulls you in and the development of a society of an unwanted class of disposable clone soldiers is very compelling.
| Published by Image
Pearl #6 is a very interesting conclusion to the first arc from Brian Michael Bendis, Michael Gaydos, and Joshua Reed. Great bits of comedy throughout what is otherwise a fairly heavy issue. Stunning artwork from Michael Gaydos.
| Published by DC Comics / Jinxworld
Quincredible #3 continues to build the world around Quin, as well as showing him learning through action, and finding out the complications of living in a fairly tight knit community where everyone knows everyone. The predicament that Rodney Barnes, Selina Espiritu, Kelly Fitzpatrick, and Tom Napolitano leave us in is compelling and really develops well through the narrative.
| Published by Lion Forge / Roar / Catalyst Prime
The Spider King: Frostbite continues Hrolf’s adventures, now trying to cleanse the world of any remaining alien presence, in this one shot. The main story is a fun tale taking on another brand of infected creatures from the mini-series team of Josh Vann, Simon D’Armini, Adrian Bloch, and Chas! Pangburn. There’s also a back-up starring Sigrid taking no bullshit from Vann, Pangburn, and art by Daniel Irizarri.
| Published by IDW
Superior Spider-Man #2 is essentially an issue-long fight between Terrax and Octavius, but it’s rather entertaining, from Christos Gage, Mike Hawthorne, Wade von Grawbadger, Victor Olazaba, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles. The artwork is incredible throughout and there are some humorous cameos.
| Published by Marvel
Teen Titans #26 is the first of this series I’ve picked up, largely since in a few months it will be crossing over with Deathstroke, and it’s not bad. It seems intertwined with Red Hood (another title I’m not reading), but all of the necessary information seems to be being provided in the story, giving no problems with narrative flow. Adam Glass adds some very nice humour in the dialogue that keeps things snappy. The art from Bernard Chang and Marcelo Maiolo also nicely captures a youthful vibe.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #90 begins to pick up the pieces from the EPF’s assault on Burnow Island, as well as weaving in the bits and pieces from the recent macro-series, as the Turtles and the Mutanimals hold a wake for Slash. Great art from Michael Dialynas and Ronda Pattison.

X-O Manowar #23 begins “Hero” from Matt Kindt, Tomás Giorello, Diego Rodriguez, and Dave Sharpe. It’s largely set-up,--bringing back the bounty hunters who assaulted Aric previously, showing off Kate’s new ship in action against said bounty hunters, and then Aric wondering how he pees in the suit--, but it’s damn entertaining. Also, Giorello and Rodriguez practically put on a clinic for visual storytelling.

Thinking of selling Avon online and not sure how much it costs? Or are you low on cash but ready to make some money? It can be done. Here are 7 ways to choose from when you’re low on cash but want to make money selling Avon online.
(Keep in mind that the Avon Starter Kit comes with a full size Skin So Soft Oil, 2 mini Anew Ultimate Moisturizers, an eye liner, full size lipstick, and Advanced Intensive Repair hand cream.)
HOW TO SELL AVON ONLINE FREE WITH AVON SKIN SO SOFT
METHOD #1 :
The first method to selling Avon online for free is by selling your Avon Starter Kit before you get it! Avon Skin So Soft oil is the easiest to sell for those who have pets. They use it as an anti flea repellent. If you sell this full size oil for $19.99 which is the retail price, and then sell each mini moisturizer for $2.50/each, you’ve earned the $25 startup fee to become an Avon Representative.
HOW TO START AVON FOR FREE WITH SKIN SO SOFT & ANEW
METHOD #2:
You could also sell the Skin So Soft Oil for $14, each mini moisturizer for $3, and the eyeliner for $5. That equals $25 and another way to earn the $25 Avon startup fee.
HOW TO START AVON FOR FREE WITH AN ORDER BOOK AND A BROCHURE
METHOD #3:
Another method to sell Avon for free is by asking a local Avon Representative (or me) for a free order booklet and brochure. The representative can send lipstick samples, plus an Avon brochure and order booklet. Once you receive this, you can place an order for $25 or more and collect the earnings from your customers. Use these earnings to pay for your $25 Avon Starter Kit and start enjoying and sharing your Avon estore online.
HOW TO SELL AVON FREE WITH A WINNING SPIRIT & SOME EAGER CUSTOMERS!
METHOD #4
When you first sign up to sell Avon online, your mentor also has the option to pay for your start up fee based on her knowledge of your goals. But this is completely up to the Representative based on your enthusiasm and your likelihood for initial sales.
HOW TO SELL AVON ONLINE FOR FREE WITH SAMPLES, AN AVON BOOKLET & A YOUTUBE CHANNEL
METHOD #5
If you have a Youtube Channel but you are low on cash and want to become an Avon Rep, this is how to do it. Inquire about free samples with me or a local Avon Representative here. To inquire about getting free lipstick samples, click here and select “CONNECT WITH ME” and select “OTHER”.
Complete your contact information and get free lipstick samples and a FREE AVON ORDER BOOK. Once you receive them, try my favorite Avon Matte Lipstick and make a video. The sample kit comes with 12 colors. Once you have 5 single lipstick orders (Avon full size lipsticks are typically $4.99), your customer’s names, addressess, and pay-pal email info, contact me and I will pay your AVON AMBASSADOR MEMBERSHIP and you’ll become an Avon Representative without paying for a Starter Kit.
BECOME AN AVON REP FOR FREE WITH AN AVON BROCHURE AND ANEW PLATINUM
METHOD #6
Request an Avon Brochure from me and 3 samples of Avon Anew moisturizer or Avon Anew anti-aging serum. Give the samples to your Mom, Aunt, friend or someone who already loves Avon. They will be happy to take the free samples from you. Follow up in 1 week and ask how they like the serum or moisturizer. If the answer is YES, contact me with their name, address, and email and I will cover your Avon Startup fee to become an Avon Rep, and you’ll be able to place an order for them immediately through your Avon estore!
BECOME AN AVON REP FREE WITH THE DAILY ESSENTIALS FLYER

My Fake Rake. By Eva Leigh. Avon, 2019.
Rating: 4.5/5 stars
Genre: historical romance
Part of a Series? Yes, Union of the Rakes #1
Summary: Lady Grace Wyatt is content as a wallflower, focusing on scientific pursuits rather than the complications of society matches. But when a handsome, celebrated naturalist returns from abroad, Grace wishes, for once, to be noticed. Her solution: to "build" the perfect man, who will court her publicly and help her catch his eye. Grace's colleague, anthropologist Sebastian Holloway, is just the blank slate she requires. In exchange for funding his passage on an expedition leaving London in a few months, Sebastian allows Grace to transform him from a bespectacled, bookish academic into a dashing—albeit fake—rake. Between secret lessons on how to be a rogue and exaggerated public flirtations, Grace's feelings for Sebastian grow from friendship into undeniable, inconvenient, real attraction. If only she hadn't hired him to help her marry someone else... Sebastian is in love with brilliant, beautiful Grace, but their bargain is complete, and she desires another. Yet when he's faced with losing her forever, Sebastian will do whatever it takes to tell her the truth, even if it means risking his own future—and his heart.
***Full review under the cut.***
Content Warnings: graphic sexual content
Overview: I found this book way more delightful than I thought it would be. I can’t remember how I heard of it, but I decided to give it a go because someone had mentioned it featured a hero with anxiety and I was intrigued. Overall, I found this book to be very well-executed and a joy to read. My complaints are minor, and whether or not you enjoy this book or not will probably depend on how fluffy you like your romance and how much you like friends-to-lovers. As for me, I’m not usually a fan of either of those things, but Leigh wove such a fun adventure that I’m awarding this book 4.5 stars.
Writing: Leigh’s prose flows fairly well and balances showing and telling in a way that is appropriate for the genre. Each scene also moves along at an appropriate pace, and the dialogue is charming and fun without feeling forced. There are some moments when I felt some second hand embarrassment for some of the characters, but I think that was the point, so I can’t complain too much.
Plot: The non-romance plot (if there is one) of this book follows Lady Grace Wyatt, an amateur naturalist with an interest in reptiles as she tries to find a husband to please her ailing father. Grace has her sights set on her colleague, Mason Fredericks, who sees her as a fellow scientist and nothing more. To make herself seem like “marriage material,” she asks her longtime friend, Sebastian (Seb) Holloway, to pose as a rake and pretend to “court” her, thereby making Grace desirable. Trouble is... Sebastian has been in love with her almost since they’ve met.
I really liked the fluffiness of this plot. There was just enough of a mix of social commentary (women being desirable only when other men wanted them, weird social customs based on wealth and class) and tame shenanigans (learning how to waltz and how to dress) to be thoroughly entertaining without being heavy. If I have anything to complain about, I do think some of the “rake lessons” could have built on one another more or revealed more about Grace and Seb’s relationship, and the ending was a little too based on miscommunication for my taste, but neither of those things prevented me from having a lovely time.
Characters: Grace, our heroine, is bookish and STEM-oriented without feeling like a complete stereotype. I liked that she had an interest in reptiles, and that her love made her more compassionate towards people. She didn’t feel socially stunted; though she was socially awkward at times, it wasn’t exaggerated or chalked up to her being a recluse. Instead, I got the impression that Grace wanted her interests to be liked by people around her, and though she was hurt in the past by people who judged her, she never let that destroy her enthusiasm.
Sebastian, our hero, is a poor anthropologist who has social anxiety. I really liked the way Leigh handled Seb’s anxiety; it was portrayed as partially debilitating without resorting to the kind of misery or trauma porn that tends to populate some romances. I also really liked how Seb truly seemed to value the people in his life and put their feelings and emotions first (rather than his own desires). It felt fairly refreshing, and though Seb is described as physically very masculine, he didn’t exude that toxic masculine energy that puts me off.
Mason, Grace’s initial love interest, was surprisingly likeable. He wasn’t mean, nor did he mistreat Grace in any way; instead, all of his flaws were very human and the hurt he caused was largely unintentional. I appreciated that the competition that was set up between Mason and Seb wasn’t rooted in hurting one another or tearing the other down. It felt rather fair and considerate, which was a surprise.
Other characters were likewise easy to like. Grace’s parents, despite having benignly neglected her as a child, seemed to be genuinely concerned for her well-being and Grace seemed to want to have a good relationship with them. Grace also has a female friend who likes astronomy, and though this friend didn’t play a huge role, I liked that she was there to give voice to emotions that Grace couldn’t recognize.
Romance: Grace and Seb’s romance was rather sweet. It’s a friends-to-lovers romance, which means that it relies on miscommunication and hesitation at times, but overall, I thought it was well done. Leigh does a good job of showing the attraction between Grace and Seb before he’s hot stuff; she writes small things here and there like touches that spark attraction or conversations that are emotionally intimate, and all these things make clear that the two have felt something for each other before Seb’s transformation. I liked that because it means that Grace didn’t suddenly realize she likes Seb after he becomes attractive (by society’s standards). Rather, she realizes she wants one kind of relationship (one that is built on mutual respect, love, and understanding) over another (one based on what society says she should want or one based on superficial similarities between the two partners).
I also really liked that their relationship was built on caring for one another and knowing one another’s passions, thoughts, etc. There is some physical attraction, but the bulk of their relationship is built on mutual understanding and feeling at ease with each other. I liked that the two could have conversations about reptiles or anthropology, and it wasn’t the subject matter that drew them to one another, but the passion shown towards learning and advancing knowledge. I also liked that Seb put Grace’s feelings and goals ahead of his own desires, which made me further think he was in love with her (and not just infatuated), and though he was jealous, he wasn’t possessive, which was refreshing.
TL;DR: My Fake Rake is a charming friends-to-lovers romance with likeable protagonists and a relationship built on mutual respect and understanding. Though there are moments when I thought the plot could have relied less on repetitive “lessons” or miscommunication towards the end, I thought this was a lovely, light, escapist romance, and I look forward to reading more of Leigh in the future.
