Goose in a HONK HONK HONK way but also in a: geese are known to protect their young at all costs even against cars, dogs and humans so much larger than them, they are such loyal creatures that they can be used as guard animals, they form close bonds with other animals, humans and others of their kind. When migrating they take turns bearing the burden of the wind so no goose becomes too tired, they mate for life and express mourning behaviours when losing children or mate, kind of way.

Meaning of name: Xenavicula = strange [in Greek] small bird [in Latin]; pamelae = for Pamela Daniels [the late wife of the collector of the original fossil, Michael Daniels]

Age: Eocene (Ypresian), 54.6‒55 million years ago

Where found: London Clay Formation, Essex, U.K.

How much is known: Two partial skeletons, together consisting of various limb bones.

Notes: Xenavicula was a small bird, though it is unclear exactly what type of bird it was. In some ways, it resembles psittacopedids, a group of small Eocene birds closely related to passeriforms (songbirds and their kin). Unlike psittacopedids, however, Xenavicula lacked parrot-like zygodactyl feet (in which two toes on each foot point forward and two point back). It also has similarities to members of Picocoraciades, a group of birds that includes hornbills, kingfishers, and woodpeckers.

Xenavicula had a highly unusual shoulder socket distinct from that of any living bird. Its anatomy suggests that it was constrained in its ability to raise its wings above its back, probably limiting its flapping capabilities. This may indicate that it had some form of specialized locomotory behavior, though without more complete remains, it is difficult to determine what behavior this might have been.

Therian- 7/10, It suits me, but I don’t feel too strongly about it, most likely because I have no many non-earthly kintypes

Alterhuman- 8/10, It fits pretty well considering that nearly all of my kind are still at least partly human, but just a bit different

Otherkin- 8/10, It fits a lot of my nonhuman but still humanoid kins

Fictionkin- 9/10, Most of the time when I’m shifted, I’m a fictional character, so I enjoy this label since it’s usually a bit more accurate than others

Godkin- 6/10, Not my favorite, since the gods I used to be were man-made didn’t really care for being treated as godly as the true gods, though they definitely still demanded respect

I am Avian Humanoid Kin. Which pretty much means I'm just a person with wings. I have never met another one, on the internet or otherwise. And I feel a little bad about that. I've never heard someone else's experiences as one, I've never met someone who I could relate to, and it makes me feel sad. Some times I've felt tempted to just call myself angelkin just so I could share some sort of connection with others, but I'm not a divine being, I'm just a person with wings.

Does anybody else feel this way about their own therio/kin types?

Conversion Corner: Starbound Species part 4

Avian

Something I’ve noticed doing these entries is that many of the species in Starbound have some dark parts of their history or their modern government. The florans are dangerously impulsive and childlike, the hylotl are self-important and bigoted… Heck, the apex, a species I won’t be covering this special are ruled by a tyrannical dystopian regime!

And that’s fine! Not everything has to be sunshine and rainbows, and the fact that members of each species can choose to accept or reject those parts of their culture as free-thinking beings proves that they aren’t inherently bad.

Which brings us to our next subject, the Avian! Resembling humanoid flightless birds, these beings are quite technologically advanced despite looking like they raided a museum on Aztec culture for their wardrobe/architectural keynotes, And are a deeply religious people.

Said religion revolves in their belief that the avian are the children of Kluex, a birdlike god they once dwelled with on a higher plane of existence. However, growing curious or perhaps envious of the mortal experience, they left that higher plane to experience the joys of the mortal experience, only for them to lose their wings and therefore the ability to return to that higher plane.

So, much of the religion focuses on the desire to return to the realm above, which they believe they can achieve by remaining faithful… sacrificing captured enemies… and leaping from a high place with the belief that their spirits will break away from their bodies and continue to soar while their bodies plummet…

Welp, blood sacrifice AND ritual suicide. Definitely gonna have to tag this post.

However, this religion does not have a total grip on the species, as there are those who either disbelieve the ideals of the faith or simply cannot stomach the idea of murdering others for their own enlightenment/apotheosis. These avian are called the “Grounded” which is appropriate as both a descriptor of their mindset and also possibly a pejorative by their religious kin.

Many of the Grounded choose to leave their homeworld, setting up or joining colonies on other worlds where they can explore their own beliefs, or even becoming spacefaring adventurers.

As mentioned before, the Avian resemble humanoid birds, perhaps specifically parakeets, and their plumage comes in a variety of colors and shapes, giving them distinctive looks.

Despite how bloody their religion can be at times, even devoted avian can prove to be affable and kind, capable of great compassion. Perhaps this is because their blood sacrifice is limited only to enemies of their people, rather than any poor sap that wanders in, though I’m sure an unscrupulous and cruel Stargazer might find an excuse for why an outsider is actually an enemy.

Avian society is ruled by their religious leaders, called Stargazers, who seek to interpret their will of their patron deity, as well as mine and safeguard Avolite, a red crystal found only on their homeworld which powers much of their technology, which they jealously guard against theft and reverse-engineering.

Question for all of my fellow avian/bird kins and therians. Im a Crow therian or crow something idk (hearted or kin I’m not sure), I have wing shifts and all that jazz, and I can imagine having dark wings, however when I imagine myself having wings they’re a light color, does this happen with anyone else or is this a sign of a potential other kin type?

I think this is as normal/hinged as I’m ever gonna get on this blog, but tldr: I’m an avian humanoid type thing (for my sake I’m not saying my source) and since it’s been getting colder I’ve felt more and more inclined to preen, store food (this is probably from another kin, as well), and give my partner gifts and it’s getting kinda insane. I spent 2 hours doing my hair today. I brought him flower petals from my plant-ID class. I made a nest and hid my snacks in it. I have been /coo-ing/ for Christ sake.

Thinkin bout dragons again, specifically Anza and Zyr's very distant ancestors. These species would be present in the late 2nd Era, around the 10th Age.

Taxonomically, these are all in the family of "true dragons," which is itself further divided into the "scaled, scaleless, and avian" subfamilies. Scaled dragons have hard reptilian or fishlike scales, sometimes in the form of armored plates, and they have bat-like wings. Scaleless dragons (whose name is occasionally something of a misnomer) typically have leatherlike hides, but may also sport an integument of fur, light scales, or even the occasional feather. Their wings are vaned (like those of an ikran), and they often have more mammalian characteristics than their kin. Of course, the avian family is feathered, and represents an earlier line that split off before the other two.

I don't have names for these particular species yet, but I know their evolutionary lines. The brackish species (of which the lake ones are a subtype) is a type of scaled dragon that would eventually evolve into the sea and stone domain dragons, while the alpines (avian) would evolve into the mist and peak dragons (Zyr's species). The scaleless steppe dragons would speciate into the remaining species, including ash dragons (Anza).

calling myself a pocket dragon hasn’t felt quite correct recently (since a little while before this post, but it’s only really stood out to me since then) and i think i’ve figured out why. i’m still a pocket dragon, but i’m also a big dragon.

i remember being a (not pocket) dragon since i was about nine or ten. i may have had an idea of what my own species looked like, but i don’t clearly remember it if i did.

as i got older (fifteen-awakening?) i started subconsciously trying to ignore any shifts. they didn’t mesh well with my main daydream worlds, and i think i did subconsciously view it as “cringe.”

i had my first pocket dragon shift a month or two after i initially awakened as alterhuman. it was very strong, the most acute shift i’d had yet, so i assumed that the big-dragon stuff i felt in the past must’ve just… turned into a pocket dragon. (now, obviously, it’s making a resurgence.)

maybe i was suppressing it even then — i think i internalized some of the stuff i saw on the therian guide forums, and was worried that admitting i was still a big dragon would somehow mean i was wrong about being a pocket dragon.

section two: the reasons (besides phantom limbs)

me as a pocket dragon is only concerned with basic life things. i have a simple thought process. communication isn’t nuanced, sounds and movements are used to convey emotions rather than ideas. eating, sleeping, crawling in little hiding spots, and finding pretty things to look at/play with is my natural state. it’s nice. of course, it’s all filtered through my human brain and non-pocket dragon thoughts still leak in, which can be annoying or stressful. but i can feel what it’s supposed to be.

but i’ve also been having other dragon-related instincts and thoughts that don’t match that.

it’s… hard to explain, the thought side of things. there are times when i am thinking, and i am a dragon, and the thinking is definitely related to me being a dragon, yet not at all related to me being a pocket dragon. they’re completely different somehow. not just the fact that i’m more articulate, but the… color, i guess you could say? the color of the world is different. not literally, my eyes don’t literally change to see different colors. but something about my perspective or mood is not the same. it’s like the difference i observed between being a fox and being a borzoi, during my borzoi cameo shift a while back.

i also relate with the sentiments of other dragons on tumblr in ways that don’t make sense if i’m just a pocket dragon. for example, longing to fly high enough to reach the clouds — my pocket dragon species stays close to the ground, not even really flying above the trees if we can help it. (this longing to fly isn’t connected to being an avian-person either, since that ‘type [whether kin- or heart- or something else] doesn’t seem to come with instincts, just high-def limbs.)

being territorial is another one. i can tell that while it’s tied in with several of my ‘types, it’s also tied in with me being a dragon, and yet not with my pocket dragon species. things like this: things that feel distinctly dragon to me but distinctly not pocket dragon.

(i would give more examples, but i don’t know much about this bigger species compared to what i know about my pocket dragon species. in my defense i did just rediscover it after a year or three of not thinking about it much.)

conclusion

i feel i’m just repeating myself at this point, so, conclusion: calling myself just a pocket dragon doesn’t feel right. calling myself a pocket dragon and a bigger, different kind of dragon, does, because i am both.
