Recovery Road: Comprehensive Auto Injury Treatment in Montgomery and Willis
When a car accident occurs, the immediate aftermath can be overwhelming. Amidst the chaos of insurance claims, vehicle repairs, and legal considerations, one critical aspect often gets sidelined: your health. In Montgomery and Willis, a growing number of individuals are recognizing the importance of seeking timely and effective treatment for auto injuries.
This article delves into the significance of auto injury treatment in Montgomery and Willis, explores common injuries sustained in car accidents, and highlights the resources available to help victims on their road to recovery.
The Importance of Immediate Medical Attention
In the wake of an auto accident, the rush of adrenaline can mask pain and injuries. It’s not uncommon for individuals to walk away from a crash thinking they’re fine, only to experience severe symptoms days or even weeks later. This delay in symptom onset is particularly true for soft tissue injuries, such as whiplash, or more subtle injuries, like concussions. Seeking timely auto injury treatment in Montgomery and Willis is crucial to address these delayed symptoms and prevent long-term complications.
Seeking immediate medical attention is crucial for several reasons:
1. Early Detection of Injuries
A thorough medical evaluation immediately after an accident can identify injuries that might not be apparent right away. Early detection allows for prompt treatment, which can prevent complications and long-term issues.
2. Legal and Insurance Implications
Timely medical documentation is vital when dealing with insurance claims or legal actions. Without proper medical records, it can be challenging to prove that your injuries were directly caused by the accident.
3. Preventing Chronic Pain
Many auto accident injuries, if left untreated, can lead to chronic pain and long-term disabilities. Early intervention is key to minimizing the risk of prolonged suffering.
Common Auto Injuries
Auto accidents can result in a wide range of injuries, from minor bruises to life-threatening conditions. Some of the most common injuries seen in auto accidents include:
1. Whiplash
One of the most common injuries sustained in auto crashes, especially in rear-end collisions, is whiplash. The muscles, ligaments, and tendons in the neck strain and tear as a result of the abrupt forward and backward shock of the head. Dizziness, headaches, stiffness in the neck, and stiffness can all be signs of whiplash. Severe cases may result in chronic pain and reduced range of motion, among other long-term problems.
2. Concussions
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a blow to the head or a violent shaking of the head and body. Even a minor car accident can result in a concussion, which may not always show immediate symptoms. Signs of a concussion can include headaches, confusion, dizziness, nausea, and memory problems. It’s important to seek medical attention if you suspect a concussion, as untreated TBIs can have serious long-term consequences.
3. Spinal Injuries
The impact of a car accident can cause significant trauma to the spine, leading to injuries such as herniated discs, fractures, or spinal cord damage. Symptoms of spinal injuries can range from back pain and numbness to paralysis, depending on the severity of the injury. Immediate medical evaluation is essential for spinal injuries to prevent further damage and to begin appropriate treatment.
4. Broken Bones
Fractures and broken bones are common in auto accidents, particularly in high-impact collisions. The force of the crash can cause bones to break or shatter, leading to significant pain, swelling, and loss of function. Treatment for broken bones typically involves immobilization, and in some cases, surgery may be required to realign the bones.
5. Soft Tissue Injuries
Soft tissue injuries refer to damage to muscles, ligaments, and tendons. These injuries can include sprains, strains, and bruises, which often cause pain, swelling, and limited mobility. While soft tissue injuries may not seem as serious as fractures or spinal injuries, they can lead to chronic pain and discomfort if not treated properly.
Treatment Options for Auto Injuries
The path to recovery after an auto accident often involves a multidisciplinary approach, combining various treatments to address the physical, emotional, and psychological effects of the injury. Here are some common treatment options available in Montgomery and Willis:
1. Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic treatment is a well-liked option for vehicle injury treatment, especially for soft tissue injuries, whiplash, and back discomfort. Spinal adjustments and other manual therapies are used by chiropractors to realign the spine, lessen discomfort, and increase range of motion. For people looking for natural pain relief, chiropractic care is a desirable alternative because it is non-invasive and drug-free.
2. Physical Therapy
One of the most important aspects of recovering from an auto accident is physical therapy. Physical therapists use focused exercises and therapies to help patients regain their strength, flexibility, and range of motion. In addition to lowering the risk of chronic pain, physical treatment can help prevent the creation of scar tissue.
3. Massage Therapy
After a car accident, massage therapy can help with pain relief, relaxation, and the release of tense muscles. To speed up recuperation, it's frequently combined with other therapies like physical therapy or chiropractic adjustments. Additionally, massage treatment can aid in reducing inflammation and enhancing circulation in wounded areas.
4. Pain Management
In some cases, medication or other pain management techniques may be necessary to control severe pain following an auto injury. Pain management specialists can offer a range of options, from over-the-counter pain relievers to prescription medications or injections. It’s important to work with a healthcare provider to find the most appropriate pain management strategy for your specific injury.
5. Psychological Support
One should not undervalue the psychological and emotional effects of a vehicle collision. After an accident, a lot of people suffer from anxiety, sadness, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). During the healing process, seeking assistance from a mental health expert can help address these problems and increase general well-being.
Finding the Right Care in Montgomery and Willis

Writing Notes: Food Allergies
Food allergies - the body’s abnormal response to specific proteins found in food. These proteins normally are harmless but cause a reaction in some people. They can occur when food is either eaten or touched.
Many people use the term ‘‘food allergy’’ to describe what is actually a food intolerance.
A food intolerance is a reaction to food that does not involve the immune system.
Lactose intolerance is a common food intolerance, while celiac disease is a food allergy.
Eight foods cause 90% of all food allergies. These are:
milk
eggs
peanuts
tree nuts (walnuts, cashews, pecans, almonds, etc.)
fish
shellfish
soy
wheat
When the body encounters an allergen, it releases large amounts of histamine.
The release of this chemical is responsible for allergic symptoms.
Symptoms of food allergy can range from mildly annoying to dangerous and life threatening.
These symptoms include:
tingling of the mouth
tingling or numbness in arms or legs
skin rash or hives
itching
abdominal cramps
vomiting
diarrhea
breathing difficulties
sudden drop in blood pressure (hypotension)
swelling of the tongue
swelling of the face and throat
loss of consciousness
death
The most serious symptom of food allergy is anaphylaxis.
Anaphylaxis, also called anaphylactic shock, is a sudden and potentially life threatening allergic reaction in which the whole body reacts to an allergen.
During anaphylaxis, the airway constricts, making breathing difficult.
Swelling of the throat may block airways as well.
Vomiting and diarrhea may occur.
The face may swell and the skin may become itchy with a rash or hives.
The heart may race and the heartbeat may become irregular.
Treatment for an allergic reaction is administration of an antihistamine drug.
The most common antihistamine is diphenhydramine hydrochloride; found in over-the-counter drugs, such as Benadryl, and in some prescription drugs.
If taken immediately, antihistamines can stop or moderate an allergic reaction.
In cases of a severe allergy or anaphylaxis:
an injection of a strong antihistamine called epinephrine (also known as adrenaline) may be used.
An auto-injectable form of epinephrine (Epi-Pen) that looks similar to a large ballpoint pen can be carried at all times if a person has a history of severe allergy.
If a severe allergic reaction occurs, the auto-injector is held against the skin and the medication is self-administered as a shot.
Epinephrine is a strong antihistamine; it often can stop anaphylaxis symptoms.

listen, i'm throwing this request in here because we frankly don't get enough of this in the x reader tag, character x injured/sick!reader. it doesn't even have to be anything super angsty if you don't want it to be. like i just want the fluff of an overwatch character fretting over reader with a sprained ankle lmao
(any characters are okay tbh, write for whoever you have ideas for!)
Hello anon!! i hope this works for you! i had a lot of fun writing this and i might make more later on. >:3
please give me more OW requests. mm brain rot <3
TBH i don’t really like genjis one i might rewrite it later on so keep an eye out for a post
D.Va, Genji, Ramattra X GN!Hurt/Sick!Reader
Not beta read
cw- injury, pain,
Hana “D.Va” Song
gaming with your girlfriend was almost mandatory as you started your relationship
you were fine with that, in fact you were happy to join in her streams and hang out with D.Va and finish to get some quiet time with Hana.
But. you two played different types of games.
You loved character driven story games, open worlds and side quests
and she was a world champion, mmorpgs, real time strategy games, fast paced games you never really tried
But she asked one day if you wanted to play LOL with her on stream you said yes of course
but wow was it a learning curve, and a new thing you had to adapt to. fast paced clicking and key mashing hurt your fingers and wrists.
you have no idea how Hana doesn’t have wrist problems worse then she does if you just played for a few days and your pointer finger felt stuck and pain would throb in your forearms.
Hana ended stream that night and took a breath to regain her self. You were chilling in the same room as her, her set up more impressive than yours as you turned off your own PC and turned your chair to face her.
Getting up from your semi uncomfortable office chair you walked over to her as she stretched, you went to grab her water bottle to refill it for her but as soon as your hand grabbed the bottle pain shot through your forearm and wrist making you involuntarily wince.
Her eyes shot to you in worry before she completely understood what happened, “Aww I hope i didn’t push you too hard that last round.”
You chuckled and shook out your arms, it really didn’t do much. “It’s hard to keep up with you in these games Ms Professional ESports World Champion.”
It was her turn to laugh, “Get good.” She got up and grabbed the bottle herself and shut down her PC. “You good though? Got Gamers wrist?”
“Up my forearms and everything, clicking finger is sore too.” You flex your fingers trying to get the stiff feeling out.
“Didn’t you used to play a religious amount of Cookie Clicker back in the day, without auto clicker?” She points out as you follow her out of y’all’s gaming room and to the kitchen.
You have a scoff, “My child self didn’t know what that was, i was rich on cookies. And it didn’t hurt all this bad.” You rested against the island.
She paused by the fridge, filling her bottle up with the water. “I have some extra wrist braces if you’d like, they work wonders.”
“Please.” Your response came instantly before you could even process the last part of her sentence. It made her snort with how desperate you sounded and she almost overflowed her bottle.
“Come here, give me your arms.” She turned around and leaned against the other side of the island in front of you.
You did and held out your forearms to her with a confused look.
She wrapped her hands around for forearms and began to squeeze them, massaging them firmly, perfectly in the place where it hurt the most. A whine left your throat at the feeling of sore pain meeting soft comforting pain. Her fingers dug into the meat gently as she circled the muscle, slowly making her way down to your wrists where she provided the same treatment. Your head rested on the island counter as you slumped over, heaven was in her hands.
“Thank you Hana.”
“You’re welcome bunny.”

Genji Shimada
sleep deprivation sucked.
2-3 hours a night was all you were going off of. it wasn’t enough to keep your brain healthy or your body.
constant headaches, unfocused eyes, micro sleep, confusion, it all was ass
but there was nothing you could do in the moment to fix it, you just kept staying awake at night to either game or finish work projects and paperwork.
sickness sometimes finds you when you’re like this, nauseous from lack of sleep, headaches making your eyes hurt.
you tried your best to fight back the sleep that demanded itself, but failed.
Genji was silent in his approach to your desk, you knew he was there, you could sense him.
Your laptop was too bright, your eyes were unfocused and you could barely feel yourself slowly lean forward to the desks surface. A hand on your shoulder wakes you up enough to realize you were holding down a single key on your keyboard and the open document on your screen now had a long line of Vs.
“Hiya Genji.” you slur almost, as you closed your eyes only for the entire world to pulse around you, sounds were too sharp and too dull at the same time, breathing in and out seemed to take all your strength, but your strength was elsewhere trying to fight off sleep.
“You don’t look too good.” He stated flatly, his helmet off as he rested in comfortable clothing.
You glance up to see him, eyes focusing on his face, “Thanks.” was all you had the energy to respond with.
He looked at your laptop, reading what you were writing but telling by his confused and concerned face you think you just wrote gibberish that your brain thought sounded like a normal sentence.
“How long have you been awake?” His voice dripping with concern but his voice buzzed in your ears and bounced around your head for a second before you could process what he said.
“I’ve had 5 hours of sleep this week.” You yawn and look away from his wide eyed expression.
It was Saturday. 11pm.
Your body didn’t have enough energy to even move it felt like.
“Okay,” he dragged out the word and closed your laptop. “Let’s get you to bed yea?” The way he said it made you know there was no changing his mind.
You didn’t want to admit you needed sleep but at the same time your head was throbbing and the thought of cuddling with your Genji was enough to perk you up more.
You mumbled out an okay before trying to stand on wobbly knees, your body feeling light yet heavy at the same time. A flesh hand came to steady you and hold you before you heard a sigh and suddenly you were swept off your feet and being carried to the bedroom.
“You need to take better care of yourself.” Concern laced his words as he placed you on the bed carefully.
“I know I know,” you made a grabby hand motion at him and he smiles, soon making his way to the bed as well, cuddling up beside you. You used his still flesh side as a pillow as he laid on his back. “I’m sorry Genji.”
He ran fingers along your scalp, scratching softly, putting you in a trance. “I know you don’t do field work anymore but you still need to rest.”
“I will, I will.” Was all you could mumble out before almost instantly falling asleep. the last thing you felt was his lips against your forehead.
The next morning Genji barley let you leave the bedroom after you slept for nearly 14 hours. He made you food and sat and ate with you in the bed while the two of you watched Cowboy Bebop. Your work could wait till monday, you just wanted to enjoy the last day of the weekend resting with him.
—————————————————————
Ramattra
you were out for a walk with Ramattra
the spring air buzzed with life as you two passed by trees, bird song filling silence, bees resting on flowers as they bumbled their fat little bodies around
it was a nice walk, one to clear your mind and his systems, just to think and be together
you didn’t see a tree root and you fell and ate dirt, twisting your ankle
“oh ow ow ow ow ow.” you let out a string of curses from behind clenched teeth.
Your ankle throbbed, it felt warm and tingly at the same time, pain shooting through your foot and up your shin. You do what your dumb brain tells you to and you roll it to make sure it’s not broken, thankfully it isn’t but the pain takes the air from your lungs with a sharp gasp.
Ramattra stared down at you on the ground, unmoving as he studied you. He watched as you tried to get back up with only the use of one leg, holding onto a tree for support as you stood with your leg raised like a dog that’s paw got stepped on.
“Fragile things you humans are. You tripped and now you can’t stand?” His voice wasn’t as harsh as it once was many moons ago, but he still said it with some form of exasperation.
You set your foot on the ground, testing it and instantly regretting it as pain erupts again.
You ignore his comment, “Oh gods I don’t know if i can walk back.”
“Weakling.” He said but held out his arm for you to take. There was no malice in his vocal synthesizers.
You did, leaning against him. Thanking him as you both turned around and took a step to head back to base. As you tried to put weight on your ankle you winced and let out a hiss.
“I really fucked myself up good.” You laugh a little as you stare down at your feet.
“Do you need me to carry you?” His voice buzzed with slight concern, you wouldn’t have noticed it unless you had spent enough time with the Omnic, and you have.
You look up at him with a smirk, a look that pokes him, “You goin soft on me Ram?”
He tenses a tiny tiny bit more than he already was, “No!” He said a bit too quickly. “It would take us ages to get back with your condition and I am not going to wait on you. It would be faster for me to carry you there. Simple.”
You ponder for a second, before nodding your head. Why would you ever give up the opportunity to be carried by this giant?
Ramattra let’s out a fake sigh and grabs you by the midsection, lifting you up and placing your butt on his right shoulder. You were expecting to be carried in his arms but sitting on his shoulder was way more fun already. You felt like a bird resting on his broad shoulders.
“Thanks, you big softie.” You pat his head to make your point.
He moves his right arm to hold your hips, keeping you stable and you use his arm as a grip. “I’m not doing this for you.” He grumbled but the way he made sure you weren’t going to fall off said otherwise.
He waited for you to give the word and he started to make his way back, you on his shoulder and enjoying being really tall.

25 January 2024
Journalist Anas Al-Sharif reports a massacre by the IOF at Kuwait Roundabout in Zaytoun, northern Gaza. He writes on Telegram
The death toll rose to 25 martyrs and 120 wounded as a result of the massacre committed by the occupation against citizens while waiting for an aid truck near the Kuwait roundabout in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood south of Gaza City, and ambulance crews are still transporting the wounded until now.
Simultaneously, journalist Ahmed Hamdan documents a surge in activity at the entrance to Al-Shifa Hospital after the Kuwait Roundabout massacre. Dozens of injured are being taken to Al-Shifa in hopes that there is something the dedicated staff can do for them. He writes in the caption (auto-translated into English)

Journalist Wadea Abu Alsaoud, also stationed at Al-Shifa, documents the crisis inside Al-Shifa’s emergency room, where more than a hundred injured people are waiting for treatment for wounds ranging from moderate to severe. As you can see, there is barely room to walk because there are so many people, and the number keeps rising. Instagram user sarafalastini was kind enough to provide an English transcription of the video, pasted below.
this is Alshifa hospital (north of Gaza), this is catastrophic scene. Many injuries and martyred. There are no beds or rooms available so everyone is being placed on the floor. More are still coming in, the flow of the injured is unending. There are various massacres taking place against the civilians. There are at least 100 injured people who arrived. The medical teams are trying to save as many lives as possible but the numbers are huge and the capacity isn't there. In the background you hear people moaning in pain, describing where they were massacred and where there are martyred, and towards the end one person says that they stand with the resistance and won't leave. Wadea repeats a few times how catastrophic and heartbreaking the scene is.

TL;DR, Spoilers for ALL of Mouthwashing. this is a thought experiment and not at all a criticism of the game, but Curly definitely died and there’s no way he would have survived even the events of the game given his injuries and lack of access to proper life saving treatment, if you choose to think about it realistically. Also I love this game with my life.
Realistically, Curly would have absolutely died shortly after the crash due to his injuries. Even if Anya was somehow able to sustain him for a while after, there is almost no way he would have made it the entire 5 months that pass in the game post-crash. But even if we do suspend our disbelief and assume this severe burn victim who lost ALL of his skin, all of his limbs, and is so injured he cannot even speak, somehow made it 5 months in dirty bandages, little to no medical care, no skin grafting (which would require a donor of said skin, and anti-rejection medication, seeing as he HAS NO SKIN), no antibiotics, surviving entirely just off pain killers.. and then Jimmy cutting off MORE of his leg, somehow not dying from blood loss or infection at any point, subsisting off only his own flesh he was force fed (which would not really do much for him irl, auto cannibalism isn’t a practical method of survival when you’re starving, any calories he might get would be negated from, you know, it being extracted from his own body, plus the body already kinda starts eating itself when you’re starving) but again, we are choosing to believe all this is possible, and then we’re also going to assume the cryostasis pods ARE in fact functional and do exactly what they’re supposed to… They were almost certainly not intended to be used for someone in Curly’s condition. Jimmy putting him in that pod likely just killed him. But even then, EVEN THEN, if we want to believe it didn’t, that the pod didn’t just kill him, and we also believe that someone found the ship still intact within those 20 years of backup power the cryo pods supposedly have, then what? They find this gruesomely disfigured man in his dirty, infectious bandages covering the entirety of his exposed, untreated, burt flesh, he is malnourished and starving, entirely unable to communicate, his one remaining eye is almost certainly oozing puss, blind, and shriveled up from lack of moisture (he has no eyelid) covered in his own piss and shit, and actively about to die, in fact it’s nothing short of a miracle he didn’t die LONG before any of this could happen.. what do they do? Who knows how far they are away from any qualified person who could help? Hell, even a team of highly skilled medical professionals might not save him. Some random ship stumbling across the wreckage certainly won’t be able to do much for him. And in the state that he’s in, it’s likely most people would already consider it unethical to continue to keep him alive.
All this to say, no. I really don’t think Curly is the sole survivor of the Tulpar who gets miraculously saved at the end. To clarify, this isn’t some Cinema Sins criticism of the game. This aspect of the story being unrealistic really doesn’t matter to me, it doesn’t effect my enjoyment of the story at all or detract from it’s overall quality. Furthermore, I actually REALLY enjoy fan interpretations of the aftermath, be it Curly being rescued and receiving restorative medical treatment, the ship simply never being found, or the ship being found and Curly being dead or beyond saving. I also love the “good ending” AUs. It’s just interesting to think about this stuff outside of all that sometimes.

Day 31 - Asking for Help
Character(s): Twilight and Warriors (LU)
Words: 654
Summary: Twilight is not handling things easily, Warriors knows this. It’s his turn to make the idiot realize how dumb it is to carry all that by himself.
Whump scale: 1 (see the full scale here)
Warnings: Grief
A continuation of Day 24, that is also a continuation of Day 14
Thank you all who have been there this whole month, I couldn't have done it without y'all support!
-
Nobody liked pointing out the empty space, they hated how often the though went through their heads. The chain is starting to do better, adapting to fill that empty space that was left.
Nobody dared to voice their doubts, the older ones making a silent agreement to let the younger ones process at their own rhythm, only doing something if they needed to.
They should have talked about this, Warriors would have suggested that even themselves needed to accept these conditions.
Him with Sky have been fuzzing around and taking care in how they will manage in the battlefield, changing some things to keep their usual plan to take down the camps without so much of a problem. Twilight stayed very far away from this.
He had been around Wind and Wild a lot lately, asking them how are they and playing with them. Sparring with Legend was also becoming very common, together with sharing some extra snacks with Hyrule and willing to hear Four talk about anything.
Twilight had always been attentive with the boys, so at first the captain decided that this was normal. If it wasn’t for the bags under the rancher’s eyes and how tired he looked, he wouldn’t have noticed.
One night, he offered himself to take third shift. The captain decided to stay with him.
“Ye should sleep, tomorrow we will be arrivin’ to the town” Warriors had been the one to do the talking almost all the time now, not sleeping some hours will not change that.
“You need it too” He said in a joking tone, knowing the answer that Twilight will give him if he lets him talk “The boys are sleeping and nobody seems troubled, and if something happens I will be there”
Silence fell between them, something comfortable that they haven’t had in a while.
“I can’t.” Warriors turned to see him, staying silent for him to talk when he was ready. “Th’y need me, or th’y will, I know it”
“But what do you need?” That question seemed to make the rancher pause, thinking a good response.
No one came. A broken sigh came from him “I dunno… I ‘ust…”
They both went back to sit in silence, the soft sound of leaves being moved by the wind, this one imitating the sound of an instrument that was able to soothe even the most troubled soul.
“I miss him.” Twilight’s hands were shaking while he tried to maneuver with them “I–I don’t know how he used t’ do all th’s… ‘m not sure if I can…”
“You don’t need to replace him.” Before another word came from the rancher he continued “Nobody could replace him, he was someone important for all of us and nothing could change that. Trying will just throw more salt to the injury.”
Warriors fought with himself during that whole first week, fighting to put a strong face and take care of everything. If it wasn’t for Wind and Malon, he would have broken so much early on.
“So, just accept some help, will you? The others get to help each other, why would we not give you the same treatment?” He grabbed his brother’s hand, softly giving a squish to it. “If you don’t ask for it, we’ll have to auto-ask us.”
There was something in Twilight’s face, an invisible barrier that just now started to crack, some parts already falling down like a poor constructed wall. He squished Warrior’s hand back.
“Thank.” There were tears falling from his cheeks, not daring to stop now that there was nothing stopping them from coming out.
“You’re welcome” The captain opened his arms, giving an invitation to the wolf-hero to let it all out.
If there were eyes watching them, he ignored them. He couldn’t take his place and do whatever Twilight was trying to do, but he can be himself and help them in what he can.

As the fetus's rights increased, mother's just kept diminishing. Poor pregnant women were hauled into court by male prosecutors, physicians, and husbands. Their blood was tested for drug traces without their consent or even notification, their confidentiality rights were routinely violated in the state's zeal to compile a case against them, and they were forced into obstetrical surgery for the "good" of the fetus, even at risk of their own lives.
Here are just a few of the many cases from the decade's pregnancy police blotter and court docket:
• In Michigan, a juvenile court took custody of a newborn because the mother took a few Valium pills while pregnant, to ease pain caused by an auto accident injury. The mother of three had no history of drug abuse or parental neglect. It took more than a year for her to get her child back.
• In California, a young woman was brought up on fetal neglect charges under a law that, ironically, was meant to force negligent fathers to pay child support. Her offenses included failing to heed a doctor's advice (a doctor who had failed to follow up on her treatment), not getting to the hospital with due haste, and having sex with her husband. The husband, a batterer whose brutal outbursts had summoned the police to their apartment more than a dozen times in one year alone, was not charged —or even investigated.
• In lowa, the state took a woman's baby away at birth even though no real harm to the infant was evident—because she had, among other alleged offenses, "paid no attention to the nutritional value of the food she ate during her pregnancy," as an AP story later characterized the Juvenile Court testimony. "[S]he simply picked the foods that tasted good to her."
• In Wyoming, a woman was charged with felony child abuse for allegedly drinking while pregnant. A battered wife, she had been arrested on this charge after she sought police protection from her abusive husband.
• In Illinois, a woman was summoned to court after her husband accused her of damaging their daughter's intestine in an auto accident during her pregnancy. She wasn't even the driver.
• In Michigan, another husband hauled his wife into court to accuse her of taking tetracycline during her pregnancy; the drug, prescribed by her physician, allegedly discolored their son's teeth, he charged. The state's appellate court ruled that the husband did indeed have the right to sue for this "prenatal negligence."
• In Maryland, a woman lost custody of her fetus when she refused to transfer to a hospital in another city, a move she resisted because it would have meant stranding her nineteen-month-old son.
• In South Carolina, an eighteen-year-old pregnant woman was arrested before she had even given birth, on the suspicion that she may have passed cocaine to her fetus. The charge, based on a single urine test, didn't hold up; she delivered a healthy drug-free baby. Even so, and even though the Department of Social Services found no evidence of abuse or neglect, State prosecutors announced that they intended to pursue the case anyway.
• In Wisconsin, a sixteen-year-old pregnant girl was confined in a secure detention facility because of her alleged tendencies "to be on the run" and "to lack motivation" to seek prenatal care.
Certainly society has a compelling interest in bringing healthy children into the world, both a moral and practical obligation to help women take care of themselves while they're pregnant. But the punitive and vindictive treatment mothers were beginning to receive from legislators, police, prosecutors, and judges in the 80s suggests that more than simple concern for children's welfare was at work here. Police loaded their suspects into paddy wagons still bleeding from labor; prosecutors barged into maternity wards to conduct their interrogations. Judges threw pregnant women with drug problems into jail for months at a time, even though, as the federal General Accounting Office and other investigative agencies have found, the prenatal care offered pregnant women in American prisons is scandalously deficient or nonexistent (many prisons don't even have gynecologists)—and has caused numerous incarcerated women to give birth to critically ill and damaged babies. Police were eager to throw the book at erring pregnant women. In the case of Pamela Rae Stewart of San Diego the battered woman charged with having sex against her doctor's orders—the officer who headed up the investigation wanted her tried for manslaughter. "In my mind, I didn't see any difference between born and unborn," Lieutenant Ray Narramore explains later. "The only question I had was why they didn't go for a murder charge. I would have been satisfied with murder. That wouldn't have been off-base. I mean, we have a lady here who was not following doctor's orders."
Lawmakers' claims that they just wanted to improve conditions for future children rang especially false. At the same time that legislators were assailing low-income mothers for failing to take care of their fetuses, they were making devastating cuts in the very services that poor pregnant women needed to meet the lawmakers' demands. How was an impoverished woman supposed to deliver a healthy fetus when she was denied prenatal care, nutrition supplements, welfare payments, and housing assistance? In the District of Columbia, Marion Barry declared infant health a top priority of his mayoral campaign—then cut health-care funding, forcing prenatal clinics to scale back drastically and eliminate outright their evening hours needed by the many working women. Doctors increasingly berated low-income mothers, but they also increasingly refused to treat them. By the end of the decade, more than one-fourth of all counties nationwide lacked any clinic where poor women could get prenatal care, and a third of doctors wouldn't treat pregnant women who were Medicaid patients. In New York State, a health department study found that seven of the state's counties had no comprehensive prenatal care for poor women whatsoever; several of these counties, not so coincidentally, had infant mortality rates that were more than double the national average. In California in 1986, twelve counties didn't have a single doctor willing to accept the state's low-income MediCal patients; in fact, the National Health Law Program concluded that the situation in California was so bad that poor pregnant women are "essentially cut off from access to care."
