Spaced Out is my original project about a team of 4 queer astronauts called "The Meteor Four" who left earth by stealing a spacecraft called "The Comet" from their megacorp because of how society treated them and their planet. So they set forth, discovering new worlds, studying their life and cultures. Character backstories below the cut.

Eliza: The captain of the team who's autistic special interest was about space and aliens ever since she was young but was treated harshly by her narcissistic mother and neglected by her alcoholic father, and was always dismissed of her dreams of being an astronaut until she was old enough to move out, get a autism diagnosis, get excepted into a college, meet her friends, earn a degree in astronomy, and take on a position as an astronaut. Years passed and the earth's environment continued to deteriorate, that's when Eliza had the idea to leave it all with the people she cared the most about and start over.

Personality: A pragmatic loyal leader, originally really introverted until meeting her friends who brought her out of her shell. Shuts down and goes nonverbal when angry. She got so used to masking that she doesn't really know how to express her excitement, and gets embarrassed when she flaps her hands occasionally, but she slowly opens up more and overcomes her self judgement.

Axel: His adhd had him only hyperfixated on Astronomy in highschool which led him almost failing his other classes until he met his best friend Zoey who helped him cheat on his tests and exams, she was his partner in crime in highschool to college. Always being there for him, from when he got into an devastating accident leaving everything paralyzed besides his head, to the struggles of finding healthcare that would cater to him due to him being trans, that's when Zoey took it into his own hands to build a body for him (along with customizable parts), using the knowledge she used from taking a engineering science course. After getting adjusted to his new and improved body he met Xavier, and then Eliza.

Personality: A carefree talkative goofball, very trigger-happy but never gets to use his built-in-arm ray gun due to Eliza's strict "no violence" rule. Does not mask at all.

Zoey: Was always fatshamed in middleschool to highschool, always the butt of the joke until they started coping by being somewhat of a class clown, but other than joking around sometimes she had to focus on excelling her classes to become an astronaut, she found herself making friends with Axel after being seated next to him in science class, finding out how much they had in common, and how he was failing all his other classes, she decided to help him by letting him cheat off her, and when Axel was questioned on how he was suddenly passed his exams, Zoey lied and told them she was tutoring him. "Tutoring" him up until he got excepted into college, soon he got into a accident and when no one else would help him Zoey did, she used the knowledge she gained from her engineering science course to build him a new and improved body.

Personality: A bubbly, extroverted tech nerd. More focused on her friends and tech maintenance than love.

Xavier: Was ridiculed by his parents and classmates for crossdressing as a kid and was always bullied for being a astronomy nerd and going against the gender norms, and that continued up until freshmen year of college where he got to get away from everything, where he got to study his passion and where he met his new friends who got him to be himself once again, who gave him enough confidence to go to a drag show and try crossdressing/drag again which then took on the drag name, "Astrothot".

Personality: A flamboyant, charismatic, confident drag queen and mom-friend.

York and Cali have both been ashamed of their rambling over their hyperfixations, yet when they get ashamed about it with each other, one will be like-"There's no need to be ashamed! I love hearing your voice and I love hearing you talk. Now I'm also gonna need a list of some names-"

Cali is very physically affectionate, and York shows love through gifts and acts of service

Also York is BEYOND touch starved, so Cal makes sure to hug him when passing by, hold his hand during meetings, set aside time for them to cuddle and for him to shower York in kisses and affection. York is a blushing wreck each time

During winter, especially if it's really cold, York will snuggle up to Cal like a cat cuz he's warm.

Cali does the same thing to York during fire season, except he just straight up wraps him in a hug from behind. It doesn't matter if York is in the middle of a conversation, he will accept the hug with pride and DARE anybody to say anything.

I feel like Cal is very aware of the importance of sleep and goes to sleep at a reasonable-ish hour, meanwhile York is the complete opposite and stays awake all night nearly every night. Sometimes Cal will physically drag this bois ass to bed, or even sometimes just pick him up like a sack of potatoes and carry him.

Maybe it’s not so much that Ganondorf’s happier, but that he’s more outwardly expressive (which, to my autistic ass, is basically the same thing).

He never smiles when we see him as a human and he’s doing the Stoic, Macho Leader routine. But then you get this whole dang rollercoaster during the regicide scene where he veers from the most hideous, offputting, totally unguarded grin to this absolutely hilarious pouty tantrum pissbaby face he pulls when Zelda teleports Rauru away.

Like, not the standard “Hmph” shounen villain scowl he did when the Molduga all got lasered, but just, “This cutscene is called ‘Birth of the Demon King’ for a reason! I am the BIRTHDAY BOY! How DARE you ruin my double-regicide birthday fun! Get back here so I can hose you to death with the Power Washer of Infinite Evil or else I’m telling mom! >:C”

I don’t know why, but that’s weirdly charming to me. I guess I’m biased, given that Zant was another one of my surprise favorites because of his big mask-off moment in the climax of Twilight Princess where he revealed he was also a massive pissbaby nerd.

I guess it’s just nice to get at least a little insight into how he’s feeling, as opposed to him being a totally inscrutable brick wall or an empty shell only capable of violence, even if those emotions are “horrible, self-centered, bratty little baby god pouting and stomping his feet because that mean old princess ruined his carefully planned birthday boy cage match.” There’s also something cathartic to me about a character dropping their mask, even if what’s revealed underneath is rotten and full of worms.

Eldest son, blue theme (like I could say this for all the Sullys, but shush), can do no wrong except when one of the siblings stubs a toe and then the Guilt, daddy's favorite solider who's also a huge dork (like we don't see a lot of evidence of this in canon for Neteyam but let me have this), Neteyam's Untimely End vs Leo getting treated as such a punching bag by each TMNT iteration that throwing him through a goddamn window is an established franchise staple by now.

Kiri - Donnie

A case can be made for April-Kiri parallels (particularly for psychic powers re 2012 April, my beloved, and dead mom syndrome) and also Karai-Kiri (for dead mom syndrome, how often I've mixed up their fucking names while writing), but Kiri-Donnie fits the siblings theme, so there. They're tech nerd-nature nerd solidarity, autistic Entities of unparalleled death and destruction, happy to destroy government property, younger siblings pretending to be above the Chaos while very much not, and in desperate need of a nap and a stiff drink.

Lo'ak - Raph

Rage issues. Daddy issues. Big brother issues. Relatively smol and Keenly aware of that fact. Adored by the (smart) fans, cursed by Eywa/God. Makes strong bonds with animal fwends and also collects traumatic experiences like magnets collect nails. 100% either in a fistfight or sobbing into his pillow rn. In a family living at the bottom of a fucking sewer and/or on the run from the government, still manages to feel like an odd one out. Someone needs to introduce Lo'ak to emo music, it would fuck him up so much /pos.

Tuk - Mikey

Youngest and most excitable sibling, heart of gold and jaws of steel. Optimism that remains in the face of innocence slowly being shaved away by Events. Hates being left out or left behind, committed to various Schemes and Plans with historically mixed outcomes. Has definitely either killed a man or will do so as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

Spider - Karai and April

Spider's kind of an unholy amalgamation of April's Token Human We've Shared Traumatic Experiences With journey and Karai's At Odds With Creepy Undead Father Figure And Complex Relationship With Less Creepy Father Figure (see below) arcs. Basically part of my ongoing psyops plans to Feminize That Boy (don't worry Karai-Kiri and April-Kiri parallels, I still love you). Also, Leorai/Apritello and Speteyam/Spiri (mix and match at will) have exciting interspecies and/or vaguely incestous vibes we should all strive for in our weird fanfics.

Jake - Splinter/Hamato Yoshi

Tired dads trying their best and just so happening to raise The Kids as soldiers-warriors along the way. Exciting and confusing relationships with the concept of this thing you call "death." Quaritch - Shredder

Big Bad of the story, or at least the one everybody pays attention to. The Bitch Who Refuses To Die. Unhealthy, possessive, genuinely quite creepy (/pos) obsession with sort-of-kid who ended up in his care through Unfortunate Means. Will destroy everything he remotely cares about and sit in the ashes with surprised Pichaku face before finding someone to blame. Refuses to let go of a fucking grudge, be it with aforementioned homoerotic-homicide buddy or various children.

Neytiri

Technically the best Neytiri parallel in terms of family relationships would be Tang Shen, Splinter's wife and the pseudo/actual (depending on the iteration) mother of his children. However, Tang Shen has an unfortunate history of being Dead Girled and Ghost-Momed in a way that puts her more in common with Grace or Tom Sully (rip). Still, Neytiri has a lot in common with the vengeful demon ghost version of Tang Shen that exists primarily in my head.

Payakan - Casey Jones

Outcast from society, defender of the weak, wanted by the authorities. Combines genuinely passionate belief in justice/revenge with an equally genuine talent for wanton violence and destruction. Has an interspecies bromance with Lo'ak/Raph that puts Achilles and Patrocles to shame. Someone definitely needs to introduce Payakan to emo music, too, not to mention death metal--he'd start a band to put those Little Mermaid fuckers to shame.

Sanae, for the ask :3

Shoe size?

Miraculously, every pair of shoes she's ever liked has fit her feet, but most of them are tacky anyways.

Would she step in and handle it?

She would step in! She even stands a good chance of handling it, through some miracle!

Favorite music genre?

Anime OP theme songs, video game music, and if she ever encounters nerdcore, there may be some kind of explosion.

Sex/romance/weird gay shit?

*gestures broadly at the oil fire tag* I mean, I've been contributing to this since the early days of a week and a half ago.

I think Sanae hits a very interesting kind of dichotomy where she has a small group of people (besides the SanaKasa oil fire, Biten, Reimu, and probably a couple others) who she'd have a cringey loving and passionate relationship with, and a lot of people who'd bounce right off of her. So in a way, she's one of the characters I can see having sex and romance (broadly speaking) line up pretty well.

Finally, I am choosing violence and attributing all the cursed Sanae/Kogasa material to Tsukasa having occasional fantasies about a sadistic Sanae, and them retroactively editing our reality.

General thoughts?

One of the really interesting structural aspects of Touhou is that the "3P" characters, Sakuya, Youmu, and Sanae, have one big trait in common: they're naive/ignorant about the world/situation. This is easily interpretable as them being dumb (Youmu) or weird (Sakuya) but I think it's a structural function of them being aware of being minions of some greater power and submitting to it, where Reimu struggles with Yukari and Marisa has been pretty independent.

Sanae is thus in a kind of willful denial about her moms. She knows on some level that Kanako's scheming isn't unstained and innocent, or Tsukasa wouldn't have been able to work on her in that Unconnected Marketeers ending. But she clearly isn't admitting it consciously, or is only starting to do so now. Her ignorance is both willful and feigned, because once she opens that door, what will happen then? (SanaKasa also offers a way for her to feel confident in opening that door someday, even if her confidence may be a bit misplaced...)

So Sanae's a big autistic nerd girl who doesn't have the sophistication of anyone else in Gensokyo bar Kosuzu, but I think part of that is a deliberate defensive strategy, of playing wide-eyed innocent to avoid the unpleasant side of Gensokyo. And obviously, she's a

relatable character

because there sure are some autistic girlthings appreciative of cringe anime and long-archaic pop culture in the Touhou fandom. (I'm only debatably a girlthing, though.)

Capping this off is that she's astoundingly powerful and capable, as her good ending in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom points out, and that's not unrelated to the previous stuff at all. On some level, she doesn't agree to submit to the world, and this makes her able to affect it harder and bigger. Autism can not only pull you some foxy bitches, it can help you break through some real bullshit sometimes.

So you can use Sanae for some pretty dark stuff, or some medium-dark stuff with a lighthearted premise like Sanae-san's On The Run!, but overall, I think her situation is pretty good. Her moms care for her in their way, are very proud of her, she's gaining confidence. Someday, maybe she'll soar.
