Hi! Do you think Hordak is autistic? I've seen people talking about it, but I haven't found any symptoms of ASD in Hordak.

I think so!

Maybe it's the way he "grew up" or was conditioned, but he acts like he's masking. I think Entrapta and Hordak are two opposite spectrums of autism. One masking, one not.

For example:

While Entrapta is openly expressive of her interests and emotions

Hordak is more reserved and closed off

Before he meets Entrapta, he's reserved, he's angry, he never shows any kind of vulnerability and isolates himself in his sanctum.

Then he meets Entrapta and he slowly starts to unmask. He opens up more.

He realizes that Entrapta is a lot like him in a lot of ways

He's socially awkward and doesn't really understand what to say most of the time, especially to Entrapta.

He opens up to her more and shares his vulnerability with her, tells her of his past and eventually loves being lab partners with him, to the point where he wants the portal project to last longer so he can spend more time with her.

So when he's told by Catra that Entrapta betrayed him, he breaks, he goes back to his self isolating ways, back to masking as much as he could so he could no longer feel the pain of being betrayed again.

But it does happen again, this time with Catra.

He grew to trust her, respect her, even seeing an equal ally in her

And then it all comes crashing down once Double Trouble reveals the truth.

He becomes angry, confused, completely losing it and chasing Catra down with his arm canon.

Then Horde Prime happens. He reads his memories and sees what went on with Entrapta. And he erases his memories of it.

Hordak's whole theme is to mask perfection because to him, he's not worthy of Prime's attention if he isn't seen as perfect. He masks himself so much that even the return of his memories after Catra says his name, he goes and gets in the pool, torturing himself so he'd forget again and again.

Then he finds the luvd crystal and this time, he doesn't reveal his memories to prime, but keeps it to himself. Then he meets Entrapta again and he curses to himself, thinking if she goes, that the memories and imperfections will go with her. And she reminds him.

“Remember! Your imperfections are beautiful!”

And this sparks something in him. The next time we see him, he is helping Prime as Entrapta is captured and he struggles with himself to do what he thinks is right. And finally....FINALLY he breaks the cycle and embraces his true self. Breaking the mask.

He IS Hordak! And he defies your will!!!

In my opinion, his theme is about breaking the mask you put on yourself as an autistic person, or at least something similar to that, because it's just so relatable. Breaking away from who you pretend to be and embrace the true you.

But that's just my idea of it, haha. It's alright if you don't see Hordak as Autistic. I'm just giving my own analysis on it.

@degenerate-mystery-inc-whore and I watch a lot of shows together. She’s learned much from recognizing patterns in my taste in media.

Every time Entrapta showed up in the intro of She-Ra, I literally screamed “THERE’S MY BABY!”

When we reached the Marcy episodes of Amphibia I began to vibrate so hard that I shook the couch and the nearby table.

I sang along to all the Lapis songs in Steven Universe.

I have said (repeatedly) that Luz is the biggest mood I’ve ever seen in a character. The Owl House is essential for understanding me as a person.

I just wanna point this out. Entraptas physical mask is so symbolic and important to her character. It symbolizes masking, a common autistic coping mechanism, and we literally see her lower her mask when uncomfortable or trying to hide her feelings. Her physical mask is also her metaphorical way of masking. It also is a nod to her special interest in mechanics as she wears mechanical and practical clothing.

I read a few months ago Entrapta had a headcanon of being afrolatina but mine is she's a quechua or aymara girl, from that area, she really looks like an andean indigenous girl

Today’s character is Entrapta from Shera and the Princesses of Power!

As I am autistic myself, I also wanted to do something for Autism Awareness Month and Entrapta was my favourite autistic character to do that! 💕

She’s also a great choice because she relates to me a lot with my autism. Entrapta had trouble with friendships and social cues and sometimes no social filter at all, but she did care for them despite the different way she would show it. It can be hard to sometimes realize these things but doesn’t mean we can’t learn them.

Even if you don’t understand things that most people would, that is totally okay! We are all built and learn differently, everyone is completely unique and beautiful in their own special way. Let your differences in yourself become your super power! 💕✨

My housemates and I are watching S5 of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which my bff J and I love, and Ash had never seen. She's been having a blast with it and it's been really cool to watch through her eyes.

I've seen some condemnations of how Entrapta is handled in S5 that I found, let's say, unpersuasive. Re-watching now, I'm not just fine with how she's handled, but have realized how much I really love it. It's still refreshing for me to see a narrative where an obviously autistic person—an adult, which is extra refreshing!—is treated as a moral agent without ignoring her actual handicaps.

Entrapta is capable of moral failure and has failed morally in the past, despite her basic good nature and personal kindness. She has lines she won't cross and where she'll stand her ground, and she hits that line before most everyone in the Horde but Adora, but her priorities were still very wrong. She's not just an avatar of Autism, and by S5 we see that she's grown and changed without any indication that she's less autistic now or more authentically Entrapta than she ever was. AND at the same time, it's clear that there is something rather cruel when other characters evaluate and judge her behavior without making any allowances for how Entrapta perceives and processes things around her. Sometimes they don't seem to even slightly consider how differently Entrapta experiences and understands the world.

The scene (in S5!) where she belatedly figures out that the others in the scene are angry at her, and everyone except Scorpia acts like she's stupid for not already realizing it, is incredibly familiar, honestly. It's one of those moments where I felt like it could seem forced or artificial in a "teaching moment for the kids" way, and yet it's one of the most relatable moments in the show for me.

Today's Canonically Autistic Character is: Entrapta from She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

I love finding characters I can relate (/project onto) within media. There’s something so comforting about seeing yourself on screen. I end up headcanoning most of them to be in-line with my identities (lesbian, wasian, autistic) because they are literally me in my head!!

Anyway here’s a long ass list of my favorite characters and why I head canon them as autistic for fun!! If you have any others you’d like to add I’d love to hear them. (And please note this is just my interpretation, and highly based on my experience with autism. I’m not saying they’re definitely autistic or that all the traits I listed are the dsm-5 criteria or something.)

Princess Bubblgeum from adventure time:

This girl is peak evil scientist autistic. Her intense need for control, the way she carefully observes the citizens she created, an outsider to them, not quite like them… god it’s so perfect. I read her as being somewhat low empathy as well, it’s hard for her to change her perspective to that of others. Plus the fact her brother neddy is a pretty obvious metaphor for higher supports needs autism. I think they of represent how autism runs in the family and appears in all sorts of different ways in different people. They’re sort of two different representations of the spectrum.

Marcy wu from amphibia

I mean this one is just obvious. The biggest nerd of all time. So obsessed with her RPG special interest that she literally sucks her and her friends into a fantasy world. She’s clumsy (just like me fr), very smart but super socially awkward, a little oblivious and naive. She’s terrified of change, especially if it means abandoning the few social bonds she’s been able to make. I honestly find it hard to believe this wasn’t intentional.

Entrapta from she-ra

Another pretty overt example. I do have some issues with how she was portrayed in the show- (keeping her on a leash was weird.) but overall I really love her. She understands her tech, not people, and it can cause her to come into conflict with other characters. Their treatment of her makes me sad at times, but it’s realistic. I also love some of her other quirks, her love of tiny food, her exitable demeanor, ect.

Pearl from Steven Universe

Peridot is the more obvious example of an autistic character in SU, and while I agree she’s coded that way, I personally resonate more with Pearl. She is not very socially aware, and bothered by disruptions to her routine/ broader life changes. She doesn’t like to break rules (despite being a literal rebel lol.) I find it interesting how she seems to have the poorest understanding of life on earth out of the gems, despite having lived here for thousands of years. She is graceful, but has an almost sort of awkward gangly-ness to her that I relate to. Her neuroticism is also very similar to how my anxiety disorder presents.

Pearl has a tendency to infodump, without realizing those around her are uninterested. Even her relationship with Rose struck a chord with me. The hopeless devotion to her, the way she followed along at her side. It’s how many of my friendships have been. Obvious it’s not exactly the same considering Pearl having originally been her servant, but while not being an explicitly autistic trait, that sort of clingy, starstruck relationship is something autistic people are prone to developing. She does little hand stims at times too that I love to see.

Poison Ivy (specifically the version in the Harley Quinn animated show)

I’m surprised I haven’t seen more people mention poison Ivy. Fiercely intelligent and deeply introverted, she isolates herself from all people, and only connects with and understands her plants. (Which her deep affinity for can definitely be read as a special interest.) She very overtly has trouble forming relationships with others.

She’s blunt, socially awkward and a loner, has something of a flat effect and a monotone voice. Those around her initially read her as cold and impersonable.Her struggle with social anxiety as well as intense fear of failure/ low self esteem is also very relatable to me. She also often struggles to express/understand her feelings and emotions. Her radical political ideas and the fact that she’s literally an ecoterrorist paints her as having a very strong sense of justice and a somewhat black and white worldview. (Me)

Finally, her relationship with Harley just SCREAMS neurodivergent solidarity. Harley Quinn is (I think canonically) adhd, and they’re both outsiders in the world that found each other and just… get each other. She’s Ivy’s closest and only friend and amazing girlfriend and god it’s all so perfect.

They remind me a lot of the relationship I have with my best friend with adhd except theirs is gayer.
