Thought I’d draw our collective Mockingjay. Sunrise on the Reaping gave me brain rot

While I do agree that Katniss and Haymitch are fundamentally very similar, I noticed some stark differences through their narration. I've heard many people say that the name-dropping in sotr felt overdone and forced, but honestly, it all makes sense. It’s logical that everyone in District 12 knew each other since it was such a small community. It was only Katniss as a character that stopped us from seeing this. She was very closed off and not particularly skilled at drawing connections between the people she knew.

For example, the fact that only reveals Maysilee’s story in Catching Fire tells is a little.... On the other hand, Haymitch provides us with basically family tree of District 12 within the first few chapters of sotr.

I’ve also been thinking about how Katniss wasn’t a very good performer. And maybe just maybe this worked to her advantage in sparking the rebellion. Because Haymitch fundamentally understood the mechanisms of the Games ( which made him more of a target from Snow?) —he knew exactly what to say and how it would infuriate the Gamemakers. Katniss, in comparison, often acted impulsively and out of hot-headedness ( it was never a deliberate act of rebellion, at least at first). For example, when she shot the arrow at the pig, perhaps deep down she knew she was defying the Capitol, but it wasn’t something she did deliberately—it felt more like a spontaneous, instinctive act of rebellion. And I have feeling Snow knew and understood this about Katniss.

Haymitch honestly feels like a good mix between Katniss and Peeta.

Something that occurred to me, is Katniss is almost certainly related to the Covey. right? But we never hear about it from her perspective.

No mention of it existing.

It took... What? Two generations for Snow to wipe out their culture?

I've decided to double down on the Haymitch and Effie ship after finishing that book.

Haymitch deserves a family. He's got two kids a ton of geese. He's allowed to move on from his girl, just as much as he allowed her to move on from him

OKAY! SUNRISE ON THE REAPING THOUGHTS:

I adore the parallels between Haymitch and The other characters. Haymitch is both such a strong reflection of Katniss and Peeta in particular.

At a cursory glance, Haymitch's home life and spirit is of that of Katniss. The way he takes Louella's body and runs is reminiscent of Katniss and Rue. His relationship with Sid is strikingly similar to Prim and Katniss.

BUT

The charisma? The heart? The desire to fight, not for himself but to keep his friend alive. The recognition that his personality counts for something? The idea of trying to show that they can't change him?

It's so strikingly Peeta.

Katniss has a lot of Lenore Dove in her. That rebel flightiness. (I wonder if that's why Haymitch dubbed her as Sweetheart).

I wonder if the reason Haymitch gets, almost defensive of Peeta in Catching Fire, to the point of almost cruelty, might be because he recognises that soft and cleverness of Peeta, whilst also relating to Katniss.

Anyway. I've only hit part two. But god help me.

Mags, Wiress, Beetee. I love you. All magnificent.

Haymitch deserves so much better. I'm glad he ends up with his geese and living near Peeta and Katniss.

Though I'm doubling down on Haymitch and Effie. He deserves something.

Just finished the part with the parade. And godddd Haymitch is such a sweet, brave, scrappy kid. I utterly adore him.
