a top 5 fics is really hard, i do read a lot. i've shared many mh recs in the past so i won't share them again but i can share same that i really liked from other fandoms. in no particolar order btw

Prevenient by bazooka (only available to people with registered ao3 accounts) and in general all their ancient bakery au: the fandom is seungkyunkwan scandal but you don't need to know much about that to understand the story since it's an au. it's a three parts story and i think in total it'll be like 150k? maybe more? but written so well it makes me cry

(after a while) you learn by curledupkitten (kittebasu): it's an exo fic and again the pairing or whether you know them or like them doesn't matter, it could easily be an original. it's one of the fics that inspired me the most when writing modern aus because i want my characters to be seen and understood the way they made me understand theirs

anything written by dirgewithoutmusic on ao3: they most write short works and they have a lot of different fandoms like marvel, narnia, hp, lotr... i love their voice. the way they say things when writing makes me want to listen forever. they have also written an original fantasy book series which i have read and really liked, but they tend to stay on the short side on ao3.

A hit, a very palpable hit by Shem: the fandom is Pride and Prejudice, the main ship is Kitty/OC, and boy I never say I have favorite books or movies but I think P&P is my favorite book and I love every variation of it but it's hard to read fics because the writers can rarely reproduce the genius of Jane Austen's words and her wittiness and everything that makes me love the books, but Shem does it right. I've read everything by this author but this is my favorite of their works. Not recommended if you aren't into P&P tho ahah

i've already answered your point about fanfic being bad so i won't come back on it. i will however state this for the record: i do not have anything to recommend that is not in this rec list. if you have already been through this rec list, i am truly sorry, anon, i have nothing else to rec to you. i understand the frustration but i'm just not a massive consumer of fic and that is literally all i have.

i do add to the list from time to time, but i haven't in a while - because i haven't read anything worth reccing.

In this episode, Jo (@pebblysand) and Lani (@copper-dust) discuss the topic of building a writing style. They explore the question of whether fanfictions writers should strive to imitate established styles - like that of the author of the source work - or embrace their own unique style. They also touch on the relationship between their writing styles and their natural speaking voices, and Jo explains why she personally prefers a casual storytelling approach. Let’s tell a story where Petunia Dursley found a baby boy on her doorstep and hated his eyes—she hated them. She took him in and fed him and changed him and got him his shots, and she hated his eyes up until the day she looked at the boy and saw her nephew, not her sister’s shadow. When Harry was two and Vernon Dursley bought Dudley a toy car and Harry a fast food meal with a toy with parts he could choke on Petunia packed her things and got a divorce.

But Molly had to try. Hermione explained things faster and higher-pitched every time Molly messed up a pronoun. Molly frowned and muttered and put extra potatoes on Harry's plate at breakfast. Harry slept in Ron's room, which didn't bother either of them but which made Hermione scowl.

Harry got boxes of sweets and warm hugs, as Molly chewed things over. For her fifteenth Christmas, the Weasley sweater she would receive would be a bright, friendly, terrible pink.

The next time Harry visited, Molly put her on Ginny's floor to sleep-- for some definition of sleep that involved Hermione hissing threats at three in the morning if Harry and Ginny didn't "shut up about Wronski feints, do you know what time it is."

imagine– we have this kid on the train, the first friend harry meets, with his corned beef sandwiches and smudged nose. ron is eleven years old and he wants gryffindor, because he’s a weasley and that’s what always happens. but it doesn’t happen.

what a way to redeem slytherin house– or, god, at least complicate it. because ron is petty. he is mean and sharp and ambitious and jealous– and he is loyal to the ends of the earth. he is all those things, and he is and always has been good.

potter becomes before weasley in the alphabet, so harry says not slytherin please and gets told might as well be gryffindor. percy and fred and george are all sitting there in red and gold, ruffling the already-ruffled hair of the boy who lived, smug, and then ron sits down and the hat spits out slytherin!

When kids in the Slytherin Common Room tossed jeers at the pudgy feet of Millicent Bulstrode, Harry rose up to do something about it. This Harry, now one of Snape’s own, got fewer House points lost but many more detentions– it had never been the colors on his hem that Severus hated.

This was not wishing Harry an easy path. This was not wishing the boy a warm House. This was Harry, three weeks in, sleep deprived and considering running away and going back to Privet Drive. This was Harry in the back of Potions class, blank-faced under Snape’s disdain the way he’d perfected under the Dursleys’s torments.

When Quirrell shouted “troll in the dungeons, thought you ought to know,” and Harry overheard that there was a girl in the bathroom crying, he still ran off to make sure she got out okay. He hesitated first, at the back of the little pack of Slytherin first years (at the back so that no one could get behind him)– he hesitated.

And Millicent Bulstrode, who could never quite keep her tummy tucked in enough, could never brush all the cat hair off her robes, never quite keep her temper in check, hesitated, too.

Both of my pieces are about minor characters and the ways in which they work to define themselves and their places in the world after the Battle of Hogwarts--postwar fic is always my jam, and I love how many ideas one can get about the path towards "all was well."

Question 30 intrigues me: "what stories are the most similar to yours"? Because it lets me do my favorite favorite thing, which is share other fic, excellent fic, that already exists and guides me a bit as I work to understand different views of a character, while I am developing a view of my own.

For my Padma fic: there ain't much, really, that I have found which is specific to PADMA. I adore dirgewithoutmusic's series we must unite inside her walls or we'll crumble from within , and the Parvati one-shot within that is just an exquisite lil look at her character, over the years. There's a bit in there during her Auror training where Dennis Creevey visits her and an instructor who is a jerk to him: she chases him down, looks him straight in the eye, rips him a new one about Dennis' trauma responses, and ends with simply, "You will respect our war." This fic shows Parvati becoming an Auror as her means of moving into adult life after the battle--in turangaland, Padma becomes a Mind Healer.

For my Neville one: two fics I love that feature him are Floreat Castellum's Toss a Sickle and @ala-baguette's character study of him as part of her Left Behind series.

My goal isn't exactly to tell THOSE stories again. My goal is to tell MY stories ALMOST as well as those authors told THOSE stories.

15. If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose?

Easy, TAOAT! Tale As Old As Time went from a story summary to what is looking like my most expansive and ambitious project, even if I have seemingly come to a standstill on it, it's on my mind constantly, and the verse plays out in me head all the time. Obviously, most of the story still needs to be written, but if there was any that could become a film, it'd be that one.

28. Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.

Ooh, ok two that I can name without hesitating? dirgewithoutmusic and shanastoryteller. Both of them are master storytellers who make me feel every word and take a universe or a story I know and just elevate it in the most obvious but incredible way.

Dirgewithoutmusic is also a published author, but her claim to fame seems to have been her Harry Potter AU rewrites which are masterful.

Shanastoryteller has some of the most incredible retold fairytales I've come across, plus her Gods and Monsters story where she reimagines Greek myths is astounding.

Very fandom specific, but I would give honorary mentions to madnessiseverything in the Narnia fandom for writing exquisite stories about the Pevensie siblings and Inexplicifics for creating a 200k+ alternate take on the Witcher universe and canon in their series "An Accidental Warlord and His Pack".

35. Would you ever kill off a canon character?

😂😂😂 Just did in my recent Jairava fic. But not my usual cup of tea, as you well know.

38. Talk about a review that made your day.

So many! But there have been a few so detailed, or which have been so effusive in explaining what particularly they enjoyed about the story that have not only made my day but stayed with me because of the impact I have made on them. I think in this social media world we live in, we tend to get so attached to the numbers rather than what they mean.

I feel upset when I see a story I worked on only received 20 notes, and 15 of those were likes. But then, you also have to take a moment to remember. That is 15! FIFTEEN! people, living breathing people with lives and jobs and existences that just so happened to read your story and leave you proof of that. It is natural to want to see your story get more attention, or be envious when another's story is doing better. But we should also remember that we are all strangers who don't owe each other anything, so when we do interact? We should appreciate it for the effort to reach out across the interwebs and acknowledge each other.

I think I may have gone too detailed, but I hope the answers are satisfactory Carmina!

Why I rec this: Andromeda is a character I wish we'd gotten so much more from in canon. This fic beautifully, heartbreakingly, explores her grief in the aftermath of the battle of Hogwarts and everyone she's lost. Dirgewithoutmusic turns in yet another superb character study with this fic and I cannot recommend it enough.

Let’s talk about a Susan who never moved on, who buried her family in English soil and spent the rest of her life trying to find her way home. She did not believe lions were kind, but she always remembered a bow in her schoolgirl hands.

She looked in every old wardrobe she came across. It was casual, everyday– the first day in a new lecture hall, she checked the back of the coat closet. Friends had her over for Christmas dinner and she excused herself to go the bathroom, checked every cabinet and closet, and then headed back in for pudding. She went home with a cute boy she met in a smoky little pub and she checked his wardrobe before she headed home the next morning, heels in hand.

She also went to college, got a political science degree she had to fight for. She got a byline in the local paper, a few ladies’ magazines, then a larger regional publication.

She had mimosa brunches with friends. She read detective novels, never touched fantasy, and finally one day she stepped through an old stone archway barely thinking about it and–-

She was standing in a treeless plain, all yellow grass and blue blue skies.
