For all of Roald Dahl's flaws, that man knew what children abused by their parents and caretakers wanted to read: the child protagonist getting adopted by a loving family and the abusers getting their comeuppance, occasionally fatally so.
And this is why the book James and the Giant Peach is better than the movie. It didn't make us wait for it.
#sorry to anyone who's only seen the movie#it's a wonderful film but the book doesn't hesitate about Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker#they get crushed as soon as the peach starts rolling away

I can’t even have a conversation with Spiker. Today I asked her if she could cook dinner and she said, and I quote
"please vacate from my premises you abnormally gargantuanly challenged pedestrian"
WHAT?!

REVIEWING JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH
Overall: 6.7/10- it's a fun show! I'm actually in it right now lol. It's got funky vibes and the music is fun. I'm not a huge fan of Roald Dahl's work in general, but I think this actually turned out solid.
Music: 7.5/10- fun vibes, fun to choreograph, and allows for a lot of different types of singing. Spiker and Sponge's songs are all fucking iconic.
Favorite Character: Aunt Sponge (I play her, tehehe)
Favorite Song/Moment: I Got You or "sandwiches...."
Most unhinged moment: PLUMP AND JUICY LMAO
What it says about you: you are a big kid at heart. You were either a book worm or struggled with reading as a child. you love whimsy and fun. Alice in Wonderland is your comfort movie. You always bring a fruit salad to potlucks.
Tell me your favorite musical and I’ll try to rate it and tell you what it says about you.

There's a scene in James and the Giant Peach where James has spent all day cleaning up after the visitors who come to see the peach and when he's finally done, he gets changed and comes down stairs...
"where do you think you're going?"
"I wanted to play with the children."
And aunt Sponge and aunt Spiker just laugh at him "the children have gone!"
And I feel like that when I come home after my last late shift on Sunday nights.
I'm ready for a dance and a drink but it's 12.30am and everyone is in bed ready for Monday morning.

James Henry Trotter lives with two ghastly hags. Aunt Sponge is enormously fat with a face that looks boiled and Aunt Spiker is bony and screeching. He's very lonely until one day something peculiar happens. . . At the end of the garden a peach starts to grow and GROW AND GROW. Inside that peach are seven very unusual insects - all waiting to take James on a magical adventure. But where will they go in their GIANT PEACH, and what will happen to the horrible aunts if they stand in their way? There's only one way to find out . . .

Exploring The Depths Of James And The Giant Peach (1996)
James and the Giant Peach, directed by Henry Selick and produced by Tim Burton, is a visually stunning adaptation of Roald Dahl's beloved children's book. Released in 1996, this film combines live-action and stop-motion animation to create a whimsical yet profound narrative that resonates with audiences of all ages.
The Journey Of Self-Discovery
At its core, James and the Giant Peach is a tale of self-discovery and resilience. The protagonist, James, is a young boy who loses his parents in a tragic accident and is forced to live with his cruel aunts, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. The film's opening scenes, with their pastel, soft-focus live-action sequences, set the stage for James's bleak existence. However, the discovery of the enchanted peach and the subsequent journey it takes him on symbolize his escape from oppression and his quest for identity and belonging.
The Magic Of Animation
The transition from live-action to stop-motion animation is a pivotal moment in the film. As James bites into the giant peach, the world around him transforms into a vibrant, animated landscape inhabited by anthropomorphic insects. This shift not only highlights the film's technical brilliance but also serves as a metaphor for James's transition from a life of hardship to one of adventure and wonder. The use of stop-motion animation, a technique perfected by Selick and Burton in their previous collaboration, The Nightmare Before Christmas, adds a layer of charm and nostalgia to the film.
Themes Of Friendship And Courage
Throughout his journey, James forms deep bonds with the insect inhabitants of the peach, including a centipede, a ladybug, a spider, a grasshopper, a glowworm, and an earthworm. These characters, each with their unique personalities and quirks, represent the diverse relationships we form in our own lives. The film emphasizes the importance of friendship, teamwork, and courage in overcoming obstacles. The camaraderie between James and his newfound friends is heartwarming and serves as a reminder that we are never truly alone, even in the face of adversity.
A Commentary On Childhood And Imagination
James and the Giant Peach also delves into the themes of childhood and imagination. James's ability to dream and create, even in the direst of circumstances, is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. His imaginative drawings and the magical journey they inspire underscore the power of creativity in shaping our reality. The film encourages viewers to embrace their inner child and to find magic in the mundane.
Conclusion
James and the Giant Peach is more than just a children's movie; it is a thought-provoking exploration of loss, resilience, friendship, and the boundless power of imagination. Its blend of live-action and stop-motion animation, coupled with its rich narrative and memorable characters, makes it a timeless classic that continues to captivate audiences. Whether you are revisiting the film or experiencing it for the first time, James and the Giant Peach offers a poignant reminder of the magic that lies within us all.

It’s my second date with Suyin.
She decides to spice things up and takes me to her favorite hang out
It’s a night bar called “The Hole.” Only I THINK it’s a night bar, because they serve drinks there. But there are also games, I think.
The man at the door is huge. 6’6 with a neck tattoo that says “Mo-“ which ends at his leg and says “-ker.”
Suyin knows him. She calls him “Aunt Sponge” and he growls at her. She pats him and on the shoulder and slips him a condom, which he bites like a gold coin and slips in his back pocket.
He says something to me under his breath. It’s a slur for “French man” which I am not.
We go in.
“This party is going hardcore,” Suyin says, rubbing her exposed belly. They’re playing the Dune Sakaduer Chant.
We go to the bar. A man called “Aunt Spiker” serves us our drinks. I ask for a virgin on the rocks. He serves me a Bang energy drink with a little umbrella in it.
I drink it as Suyin starts talking about podcasts. She says she listens to them while she scrolls Reddit, and only turns them off to watch a police shooting. I ask her what her favorite is, and she says it’s: “The one where grandpa realizes how pointless it all is and fucking loses it.”
I nod.
A slow song comes on. It’s Forever Young. Suyin puts down her drink, Which is green. She looks at me. Her wide eyes like a owl watching a family get axe murdered through a window. I think she wants to dance.
I take her out to the dance floor where a man on DMT is trying to speak to a chair covered in cum. I wrap my arms around her. Or I try, before she says she’s too big and to hold her from the side. We dance as her belly slowly kicks. She turns, whispering in my ear that I smell like shit. Then she sniffs herself and grunts.
The song ends and she loudly says: “Ok, let’s go home and fuck.”
She grabs me by my hand, leading me up the steps and back home.
She bends you over on her shitty little bed and fucks your brains out, belly thrashing and kicking while it rests on your back. She calls you Ife while she fucks you. That's not even close to your name.
When she's done she's gasping and panting like she might actually die and asks if you want a Round 2. You say you're good, you just want to cuddle or something. She throws your pants and underwear out the window and tells you to get the fuck out. She still texts you later about a third date. You don't remember ever giving her your number, actually.

I just had a vision of my nightmare car
OK so it's got the proportions of Cruella Deville's car from the original "101 Dalmatians"

The headlights too
And it's a dull, dirty grey (and slightly crushed) like Spiker and Sponge's car from the nightmare sequence of 1996's "James And The Giant Peach"

It's got dangling seaweed (and the rattletrap engine sounds) of the live-action version of the same car from the same movie
youtube
Furthermore, it's got a grill that looks like silvery, needle-sharp teeth, like the anglerfish's mouth from "Finding Nemo" (but with straighter teeth)
And a protruding, not-safe-for-pedestrians hood ornament (as 30s cars often had) that's stained with blood and looks like a cruelly barbed harpoon head

Like this, but with prongs only on one side (but sharper and nastier prongs, like, cut-your-finger sharp)
I think the Devil just tapped into my brain to show me his whip

In Roald Dahl's opinion the worst thing you can be is a woman who doesn't like children. They're everywhere: the Trunchbull, the school cook, arguably Matilda's mother because she likes vanity and TV more than her daughter, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, all of Witches... these are literally just the ones I can remember off the top of my head.
#listen I hold these books close to my heart but they're BAD#they were written by a bad man who wove his gross opinions right into them
