This is really helpful as someone who's currently writing a podcast!
I have a few disabilities and wanted to see them in audio drama format and despite the fact I go nonverbal occasionally, I never though I could create a character who experiences it within the medium. It's a different story when it comes to writing characters who use mobility aids though. For me, they have been a lot easier.
I am for once thankful for the sounds (various) canes make on different flooring. The way a foldable cane will inherently make more noise (because of the extra joints that are often unable to be tightened) and the different rhythms that come from walking with it or just standing and using it to beter your ballance. Then there's the sounds of rollators and wheelchairs as they pass over different materials or the sound of them dropping off a curb or scraping against a wall. Additionally there's the sounds made by the various materials the guards (for the spokes) make or movement around the aid itself when you handle them, pick them up, assemble, disassemble or simply just play with them.
They become an extention of you. Mannerisms start to develope around the use of them.
Personally, I tap my cane (either on the ground or with my fingures). The rhythm and intensity, depending on my mood. The little clicks of the joints can be either comforting background noise or painfully loud when I don't particularly want anyone to notice I'm there.
This is something else I'm trying to play with when writing. Letting sounds dominate the stage. If it can create or show a certain emotion, use it! You see it in TV all the time. A flickering light, loud ticking of a clock, overlaping of sound or visuals. This can all be translated to a sound based medium in practice.
Anyway, I've rambled on enough. Thank you OP for the wonderful post. Will definitely be checking out the podcast you made! And I hope this little word dump is helpful to someone else other than me. (I finally have at least some of my thoughts in order :D)
Non-verbal & non-speaking characters in Audio Dramas

A PowerPoint was created after receiving questions as to how we could have characters that don't speak in our show. For an audio version, check our TikTok.
Suggestions for other ways to give non-speaking characters space in shows are welcome! This presentation was made by someone who is mostly non-verbal and previously fully non-speaking.

In no particular order, these are some of my top audio dramas that kept me company during 2024.
1 Breathing Space: This is one of my favorite flavors of sci-fi. It is a series I have been savoring, and I do intend to relisten through at some point - because I listen to podcasts while working, it's easy for me to miss things. I haven't finished the whole series, but Breathing Space is definitely worth coming back to.
2 Monstrous Agonies: Monstrous Agonies was one of the few podcasts I didn't only listen to while on the clock. It is the perfect length for me to put on two episodes while chopping veggies for dinner, and an absolute delight every time.
3 InCo: Another podcast that shone, despite my inability to pick up on all the cool things going on. Another one I look forward to returning to.
4 StarTripper!!: Just thinking about StarTripper!! makes me smile. It is utterly charming.
5 Gastronaut: Incredible premise, executed beautifully. I'll be thinking about this one for a long time.
6 Paired: Paired is a longtime favorite of mine, and was one of a handful of relistens I did this year. I love Pairy. I hope she got to set a deer on fire.
7 Travelling Light: How much do I love Travelling Light? Every morning, I update my podcatcher and decide what to listen to based on that morning update. Travelling Light is the only one that gets downloaded as soon as I see an announcement that it's out. It's the only one that gets bumped to the next pod in the queue when listening.
8 The Green Horizon: Please I need to know where I can find more Irish-made audio dramas, this show fills the Motherfocloir-shaped hole in my life and I'm going to be finished with it soon.
9 Birds Of Empire: This show deserves better than for me to listen to while I'm at work. It's outstanding on several levels.
10 Metropolis: The first few episodes of Metropolis have set a high bar for this series. It is starting off strong, and I'm quite glad to be along for the ride.
11 October Jones & Fish With Legs: I've said this before, but OJ&FWL will fundamentally alter the way you say "mimosa" and that is just the beginning of this show's delights.
12 World Gone Wrong: The dialogue, both in terms of the writing and its performance, is so goddamn fluid and natural, if it weren't for the subject matter, I could have been convinced that this is a nonfiction chat pod between two besties.

In a couple of hours, the last episode of Remnants of 2024 will go live. I had high expectations with this show when I was putting it together, but honestly, I'm incredibly proud of this show's listeners for the thoughtfulness and real care with which they approach listening to this work.
It might sound like an odd thing to say, but whilst my primary goal as a storyteller is always to tell a good story which resonates with people emotionally, with Remnants, I really set out to make something which encourages people engaging with it to look inwards, too.
When I'm writing, the most important thing to me is always that I'm telling a good story, one which sticks with you after the end. We're a ways off the end of Remnants yet; Season One has eight more episodes after this one and Season Two hasn't even officially been announced yet (it IS coming, though).
Despite that, it feels like people are already holding onto to little pieces of Remnants. It's such a rewarding thing as a writer to see people pour so carefully over the fine details of my work, to pluck out traits from my characters I never imagined anyone would really notice.
Thank you so much.
I really, really adore this show. It's like a perfect midpoint between what I've been attempting with my audio drama work previous to this and the kind of writer I am in prose, bridging a gap in my creative endeavours I wasn't sure I'd ever get to close.
As a testament to how much I love making this show, please know I accidentally stayed up until 4am despite being as sick as a very sick dog because I got too into finalising the script for episode 24 (a hint: that involves instruments and heartbreak and a whole lot of love).
Anyway. Thank you all so much for listening to Remnants, and for being so thoughtful with it when you do. There are few things more gratifying than enthusiastic engagement with my work. Thanks so much for all the love you've given Remnants this year, and I look forward to finishing S1 in 2025 <3

Next week's episode is a BIG one, and we have proof! From our fantastic sound designer, Sarah Buchynski, this is a screenshot of her edit: 772 SFX clips with 124 tracks! Sarah's work is always exceptional, but we handed her some really big stuff these next two episodes and she absolutely smashed it. We are so excited to share.

I didn't forget about my other promise at 50% 😉 here's our gorgeous Hi Nay girls, Laura and Mari, in ink and pencil.
The Hi Nay fundraiser is ongoing, and we're currently at 54% of our $4000 goal! The faster we hit our goal the faster we will come back from hiatus in January, or early February! The fundraiser officially ends January 31, 2025.
Support us on Ko-Fi by buying one of our reward tiers!
There will be NO new Hi Nay episodes until we hit our goals, so please help us achieve it so we can continue producing the series 🫶🏾🙂‍↕️

the thing about trying to recommend fiction podcasts to someone who isn't familiar with them is that not only are so so many genres represented but also the level of production can fall anywhere from "basically an audiobook" to "major motion picture minus the pictures"
