I do sort of wish western anime fans would analyze anime and manga from a framework of japanese historical and cultural context. Specifically a lot of works from the 90s being influenced by the general aimlessness and ennui that a lot of people were experiencing due to the burst in the bubble economy and the national trauma caused by the sarin terrorist attack. I think in interacting with media that’s not local to our sociocultural/sociopolitical sphere it’s easy to forget that it’s influenced and shaped by the same kinds of factors that influence media within our own cultural dome and there ends up being this baseline misalignment of perception between the causative elements of a narrative and viewer interpretation of those elements. It’s a form of death of the author that i think, in some measure, hinders our ability to fully understand/come to terms with creator intent and the full scope of a work’s merits
#exilley's diary#this is about utena btw like. yeah its feminist and a coming of age horror story but also#it was in part ikuhara’s response to the changes he observed in the corporate anime industry and an attempt to subvert those trends#it doesnt really help that i feel certain aspects of the show are filtered through translation and certain cultural emphasises are lost#like for instance. the blood type symbolism. or wakaba’s gestures with making packed lunches#theyre incredibly japanese expressions of conventional gender roles that non-japanese audiences might not fully resonate with

i think one of the biggest scams i've seen in my lifetime is the idea that it looks better to have to have all matching mugs, preferably that match your dishes
reblog and tell me about your coffee mug
#i never want to see a dish set come with mugs again#(actually i change my mind i just realized i could give them away as gifts#and my friends would have mugs that match my dishes#but only for fancy dish sets not the soulless ones from walmart)#i trend minimalism and matching aesthetics in real life so i AM the target audience for that kind of thing#and theres honestly nothing i love more than asking my friends about their unique things#and you lose that when you all have soulless matching mugs#my favourite mug is a 20oz thats half glazed and unglazed pottery#reminds me of living in yellowknife with miles and the coffees we made during covid#my previous favourite mug was a gift from my mom#an awesome 20oz mug with a cute downward dog with dog drawing

Something I really appreciate about Wicked is how it doesn’t try to hide its big twists. Modern media is obsessed with avoiding spoilers and tricking the audience and focusing more on making twists shocking than making them make sense. Wicked doesn’t do that. Wicked gives you all the answers in the first act — if you’re paying attention you can absolutely figure out who Elphaba’s father is, or what’s going to happen to Fiyero, or any of the big bombshells in the second act.
But because they’re set up so well and so deliberately, when the reveal comes it’s more impactful than if it had been completely out of nowhere because it’s satisfying. It makes sense for the characters and for the story. It’s not some “gotcha” moment that comes out of nowhere and adds nothing to the story but fleeting shock value, it feels like a natural story progression even if you didn’t pick up on it. And it adds to the rewatch value, because knowing the twist leads you to pick up on all sorts of little hints and jokes foreshadowing it that you might have missed the first time. It’s just a really refreshing use of plot twists (which makes sense given that this story predates modern spoiler culture by a couple decades).
#i *hate* the trend of ‘if the audience can guess it then it’s not a good plot twist’#NO NO THATS NOT HOW IT WORKS#a well written plot twist is one that you *absolutely* can guess on first watch#but that you somehow don’t think to#wicked#wicked movie#wicked spoilers#i guess? I alluded to them

"We need more weird art" you can't even handle musicals because the story is told through music and dance
#there's quite a lot of talk in musical discussion spaces about the new trend for movie producers and marketing teams to make a movie#adaptation of a musical (that was done on stage) or even directly an original musical movie and market it as if it's not musical#because they've seen that people won't go watch musicals if they know they're musicals because general idea is that it's too weird#and the numbers are showing that this marketing trend works. they're selling so many more tickets by hiding that it's a musical. and having#many people in the audience find out it is once the movie has started!#so some musical fans don't go because they might not even have realised that was a musical and the people who go might not like it#sure there will be people who are close minded and wouldn't have gone to see a musical but once they're there will enjoy it. but other won'#I hope they make polls of audience satisfaction not only tickets sold. i want to know more.#💬#musicals#broadway

Drop your stories in the tags. As always, if you feel that an answer should apply to your situation, go ahead and choose it, I’m not a cop.
#I know this has nothing to do with prompts I just LOVE the hyper specific poll trend#and this is my biggest audience#so you shall see it#thanks for understanding

ATTENTION besties we really need to think of an additional main tag for Only Friends. because tumblr will not let the show trend through this one, including #only friends and #only friends the series, which also means they might block the tag from the search altogether in the middle of the show (the way they do with other nsfw words). also, before this day the tag was mostly filled with girls equaling "only friends" to "onlyfans" which! great for them making those money! but they are using the wrong tag and it gets exhausting browsing it. we are here for a different kind of a slutty show. we would simply add the chosen tag to the other ones in Only Friends related posts. here are my suggestions, but you can drop yours in tags or replies
#only friends#only friends the series#mjtag#idk maybe this is stupid but i hate when cool shows don't have a chance of trending and reaching bigger audience because of censure

real quick because the fandom's experiencing some growing pains--reminder to be nice to new fans! yes they'll have different dynamics, energies, and ways of doing things, but that's not a bad thing
we are all here to enjoy ourselves, so let them enjoy themselves. we were all new at one point. if its harmless, who cares! block if its that much of a problem/nuisance
we do not need a fandom generational divide, please and thanks <3
(and to new fans: hi! sometimes we have genuine points about etiquette like spam and tagging conventions to make the space better for everyone, but otherwise! just have fun!)
#kotlc#i made my 'this aged me ten years' post in jest#but seeing a couple other opinions. i do not want that to turn into anything#new fans are fully welcome here#yes there's fandom history i'm happy to pass down about#trends and jokes we've had and ways we've done things before#but that does not mean it needs to stay like that#the kotlc fandom is VERY fluid#there's always people coming and going given the intended audience#so I want to say: you are welcome here#have fun#you do not need to do what we've done before

"...not only did a second movie take much longer than expected to be greenlit, the franchise could suffer because of how long the follow-up will take to arrive." "The sequel won't be released until three years after the first film in the series first hit cinemas. This is a rather lengthy wait for a new movie franchise that's trying to establish itself beyond a single installment." "a sequel could realistically be made in a much shorter time frame than three years."
"Fans of the first movie could lose interest if they're forced to wait"
HOW ABOUT YOU SHUT THE ENTIRE FUCK UP
#shut up shut up shut up shut up#I hate fast-food style cinema I hate pressuring artists and writers to work faster than is healthy for the sake of clicks#I hate forcing things out at breakneck speed to keep up with trends and treating the audience like ipad babies#I hate the business world's chokehold on art 3 years is already SO fast what is WRONG with you#language cw#mario movie#vent

something i actually love about the young justice tv show is that every season has a time skip and the writers are like “okay??? just figure it out”
like season 1 to 2 time skip where they don’t tell you that there’s a time skip but robin looks different and you’re like ok. i know there are multiple robins, perhaps this is jason and NOPE!!!! tim. they don’t explain this and you’re like ok whatever and then you find out later that jasons robin died, not unexpected if you know the lore but this is untouched by the narrative and also unexplained. did he die differently from the comics? everyone knows about him but they don’t say anything (until season 4 when they say his name but not his role/identity on the team). and then season 2 to 3 time skip and there are more bats and you’re like oh hello. nice to see you. no explanation they are simply there now.
also season 2 to 3 time skip and there are 3 different roy harpers. you know about 2 of them and then there is inexplicably a 3rd roy harper but again we’re not gonna talk about that, that’s just jim. he looks like the oldest but is actually the youngest. FIGURE IT OUT!!!! love it
#kinda refreshing from the current trend in media where they spoon feed every single piece of information to the audience#but it does make me laugh#yj was actually my first experience with dc so i was like??? but now i read comics. so. i get it. but at the time? wild.#young justice tv#young justice#dc#jason todd#tim drake#roy harper#will harper#jim harper
