What’s your favorite space adventure story set entirely in one solar system, without commonplace interstellar travel?

Welcome to edensinking! This writing blog is so new I don't think I've thought of aliases, so for simplicity's sake, you can just call me by my username. I'm twenty-six, and I've been writing basically my entire life, but this is the first time I'm actually joining Writerblr. Partly because I'm learning a lot about the writing world in general, and partly because real life can be exhausting and I'm allowing myself to write for fun, you know, as a little treat.
I'm on AO3 under this same username and I'm planning to start writing again for both fandoms and also some original work soon, so you can keep an eye out for that. I'm gonna leave some of the fandoms I've been in from the distance and contemplating writing for underneath the cut, as well as some blogger information; so feel free to follow and I'll follow you right back! B-Bye!
Blogger Information
Age: 26
Pronouns: She/Her/Hers
About Me:
I'm a huge mystery fan—I've been a huge mystery fan since I first read Agatha Christie at ten years old. I'm also a huge fan of anything under the punk subgenre (Atompunk, Decopunk, Steampunk) and a horror film enthusiast. I'm in love with classical music, I'm in love with paintings, and I'm in love with Greek Mythology (especially the myth of Orpheus, and the myth of Persephone.) When I'm not working, which is not very common nowadays, I enjoy reading, cooking, playing the piano, watching movies with my friends and my cats, knitting (very shittily), and having a dance party of one.

Rachael and Holding Onto the Past and Abuse and Themes
hey cw up front on this one: there's gonna be discussion of abuse n grooming in here
I have been plagued by thinking about the themes of An Atompunk Opera, the New Albion Guide to Analogue Consciousness. It really was a struggle for me and i think mostly that difficulty came down to the character Rachael. As much as i loved her, jokes about her just "being a taxi" for the True Real story kinda kept me from thinking about her story and her writing and giving it proper weight and thought. And that isn't to say that she isn't a passive protagonist for much of the story, she very much is. From the moment she escapes the asylum she was kept in until she runs out on Lee into the arms of Elysium's angels, the narrative mostly happens to and around her. She very much reacts to it.
I think this fits into what I've come to understand as a big theme of An Atompunk Opera, the New Albion Guide to Analogue Consciousness, of holding on too tight to an ideal past to the detriment of seeing, let alone making a new future to be happy in. The most obvious character to point to for this theme is Connor, who was so focused on saving Lee to the detriment of his relationship with zip (mascot 3000) that zip just calls Conner "the madman" instead of dad. and in the end instead of forging a new future with the kid he does have with him, instead he's left with neither one. We see this in Lee's last moments as well, he wants to hold onto and mend a relationship with the woman he thinks is the reincarnated soul of his long dead love, and clinging onto it ends up killing him.
Rachael doesn't seem to be outwardly holding onto something from her past though, does she? I mean all she does after escaping the asylum she was put in after she wanted to keep the pregnancy from a guy who groomed her was follow the instructions of this man older than her because she's lost alone and disoriented- oh hm.
Up front i am not comparing Connor to the man that abused Rachael. This isn't a "Connor is secretly this even worse thing" kind of post. This is a discussion of reaction TO years of abuse and cycles. And Themes. Love a theme.
Rachael is a character who as we meet her in her song details being wooed by a man much older than her n whom demands respect from her life. I have been in similar situations to this. Being made small n to listen to directions leaves a huge impact n even after moments of sticking up for oneself it is very easy to still slip into those patterns. Rachael, i believe, is still subconsciously clinging to a past or more accurately trauma of needing to look for instruction and approval. And as a more active role, is holding on to ideas of soul mates and romance to get her through her life. She's holding on to the love song just for her on the radio. She's the character who's holding on with two gripped fists to something that wasn't good in the first place. Her story is so, so necessarily about being able to let her past go.
So she is a taxi in the story as she's told to be. She goes to elysium because she doesn't have much better to do and as she thinks its where her promised love will be waiting. She steps into elysium greeted by a welcome party!
Then it comes crashing down when Lee tells her that she doesn't feel like Adrian, the he cannot love her in the way she wants. So she runs, and she cries and she wants to die.
And then she lives, and then she chooses to keep living, not chasing after acceptance or recognition or her destined love. Rachael chooses to carve out something new with her acceptance into elysium, and with Zip. She gets to have a happy (after?)life because she's the character who finally stopped clinging to a past that she shouldn't return to

Current worlds I'm building on my head:
Biopunk South America: where a biotechnology revolution and a worldwide ecocide changed the world forever, set in Buenos Aires in 2143. Six students set to make a grant project that would bring back the spirit of old biopunk. Inspired by Argentine rock and fútbol, hacker culture, and biopunk of course.
Campoestela: A 'classic' space opera setting, humanity has spread across the stars meeting hundreds of other civilizations, the focus here is on the cultural diversity of countless worlds. An Argentine space trucker finds a cringefail gamer girl from an extinct civilization and they try to cope with this. The theme is travelling but not for adventure but to work, like truckers or bush pilots.
The Alchemists: Set in the historical Republic of Florence in 1491, except the supernatural is very, very real. An alchemist and a witch deal with adolescence and their jobs while uncovering the secrets of Hermes Trismegistus (and eventually travel all the way to Egypt, China and beyond). A magical setting but based, as much as I can, in real historical conceptions of 'magic'.
Space Battleship Aurora: During the twilight years of the Space Roman Empire, the crew of a battleship rebel and they join a communist (not metaphorical, literal) revolution, as things fall apart. Basically a retelling of the Russian Civil War but in fantasy space.
METAL LML: This is just a rule of cool setting where everything that happens in Heavy Metal covers (the magazine and the genre) is real. A bunch of badass characters fly on their spaceship fighting hordes of evil demons with the power of METAL. With a found family, if you actually care about plot or stuff like that.
Argentina post-magiapocalíptica: Somewhere in 2012, the world changed and civilization collapsed with the "return" of magic. Argentina is a vast land full of wonders, all based in popular legends from the pre-columbian to current memes. Argentina-core basically. It has a lobizón and bruja characters too.
América Invicta: In this setting, the Inca and Mesoamerica remain unconquered, but they still have to deal with the contact of Europeans. This is a setting where every myth and legend about the Americas is real and then some. It's an excuse to present more Latin American mythology and legend.
The Greatest Scam: A hard (as it can be) sci-fi setting where the Solar System is turned into a dyson sphere to mine bitcoin, and the Socialist Interstellar roams the galaxy, safeguarding what remains of Earth from the ultimate apotheosis of capitalism
Concordia: (or Star Trek: Rebuild) An optimistic atompunk (but realistic) setting where the US and USSR decided to cooperate and do a joint atomic and space program, and things escalate from there. Humanity reaps the benefits of the peaceful Atomic Age, as ATOMIC ROCKETS explore the stars.
If you see me talking about worldbuilding, or reblogging very specific things, it's about some of these. EL BIOTIPO CINEMATIC UNIVERSE.

rankings of the paul shapera's new albion series
steampunk opera/dolls of new albion: fuck yes no notes. has anabelle mcallistair in it
diselpunk opera/new albion radio hour: FUCK yes no notes
atompunk/new albion guide to analouge conciousness: starting to get confusing but pretty damn good once you sit with it for a while
the room beneath new albion: alexander is a bit of a nothing character but his songs perform their intended function extremely well. alice's character & the coal that sings hosanna are highlights of the series as a whole.
weird west cabaret: extremely interesting conceptually, best in the ballad of lost hallow series. ending WILL leave you legitimately lightheaded
happy funtime carnival: lore that recontextualizes the original new albion series in a really cool way. worth it for that alone, even if the lore is starting to get real messy
gabriella gadfly+: yeah i have no idea what's going on anymore /neg

A while ago I was going to make one of these intro/aesthetic type of posts for Nuketown and I’ve had it sitting in my drafts for so long that I forgot all about it while working on the actual book!😂
TITLE: Nuketown
GENRE: Science Fiction (Space Opera, Atompunk)
SETTING: A futuristic, spacefaring version of The Cold War and the 1950s from the seemingly peaceful suburbia of Atom Valley to the war-torn battlefield of Jupiter’s moon Io.
INSPIRATIONS: Watchmen, The Outsiders
STORY: The United Earth Federation is in a not-so-silent war of attrition with the Republic of Martian Colonies, having brewed since the Second System War. But when an assassination attempt on Earth President Dexter Oppenheimer is thwarted by a group of youths led by Robinson Curry, a dangerous chain of events is set in motion that could spell the end of all life in the Solar System, whether from mutually assured destruction at the hand of nuclear armaments, or something even darker and deadlier.
STATUS CHECK: Published and available to buy on Amazon!
THE CHARACTERS:
Robinson Curry
A sensitive youngster, being raised by Smith and Kate Curry, alongside his headstrong sister, Marie. Together with Marie and their tinkerer best friend Kennedy Hudson, they intercept an assassination attempt on the Earth President, and end up hunted for their trouble. Through his journey on the run, his trio is taken into a pack of greasers, where he must learn to fight like he’s never fought before to survive.
Dr. Jones
A mad scientist under employment of the C.I.A., sent clean up the mess when the Earth President is attacked. Whimsically sadistic and criminally cruel, he will stop at nothing to preserve Earth’s political power.
Gossamer Jones
Dr. Jones’ supersoldier creation, with the strength of ten men, and the heart of a lamb. While out on their mission, Gossamer secretly seeks to break free from his father’s grip, and end the suffering he has been ordered to cause.
Dexter Oppenheimer
The President of the United Earth Federation, with his V.P. Ford Hammond at his side. From the war with Mars, to the attempt on his life, President Oppenheimer is caught in a wicked weave of political trickery that threatens the lives of Earth’s citizens.

Atompunk Ancap Trio headcanon time! This time lets get bookish with it!
Mr. House probably likes “romantic” gothic novels. Like Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, Phantom of the Opera, etc. Aside from that, generally Romantic/Victorian British literature. Would 100% participate in Dracula Daily and other email newsletter novels if he was alive to do so.
Cave Johnson can’t read. (I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist the joke.) in all seriousness, he’s a diehard war novel lover. His favorite from the genre would probably Slaughterhouse 5. I imagine that he would also like spy thrillers like the James Bond series.
Andrew Ryan was a tricky one for me. I feel in my heart that his favorite novel is Animal Farm, but aside from that he strikes more as a nonfiction type person. He’s got a bit of a pretentious art streak though so I imagine he reads a lot of the old classics like Shakespeare, Beowulf, and the Greek Tragedies. He has a love/hate relationship with The Great Gatsby.
