Here's day 5: air nomads of @atlagenweek2021!

Zuko sighs, and follows his own resolution.

“Does it ever get lonely?” he asks, and then kicks himself mentally over it. That was not an apology.

Aang yelps as the crab manages to grab one of his toes, clashing onto the sand and shaking his foot to get rid of the damn thing. He says, “Sometimes!”]

Or, Zuko apologises to Aang. Aang plays with a crab. Appa is there, for emotional support.

Day 4 of @atlagenweek2021 's ATLA gen week

Prompt: Asexual characters, featuring Yue and Toph (and Beaver the Guide Dog)

Turtleduck Lord

It was an accident, turtleducks becoming his Thing.

He likes feeding them – for the fond memories of his mother and the semi-official sanctuary the garden offers – but they’re just turtleducks. Except the Gaang finds him there one too many times, and next thing he knows…

Sokka gifts him a carved turtleduck (...supposedly). Toph pulls out a new set of nicknames. Katara asks after them, and Aang insists that they should all be individually named. Then the whole palace joins in…

He shrugs and rolls with it. There are far worse ways to be known than as the Turtleduck Lord.

It all started because of fidget spinners.

Zuko remembers the day clearly—he was walking down the halls with Sokka, his boyfriend, who was happily spinning his fidget spinner, as one with a fidget spinner does.

It just so happened that Zuko’s ex and current best friend, Jet, was walking in the opposite direction at the time, twirling his own fidget spinner.

Jet and Sokka had never really gotten along well; they were always tense, defensive, and quick to anger around each other. But, since they were in the same friend group and both cared deeply for Zuko, they sucked it up.

Until the fidget spinners.

Day 6: Siblings & Chronic Pain

"Bolin… are you sure you can climb all the way up?" Mako asked one last time as he pulled the strap of his bag shut.

"Come on Mako, Bolin is a big boy now. You don't have to baby him all the time" Korra said with a slap on his back.

"Yeah, I should be able to handle it," Bolin said with a decisive nod. Mako narrowed his eyes at the statement but let it be for the time being. He'll know the reality in a few hours anyway.

*a few hours later*

"Soo… you were saying?" he asked with a grin as he spotted Bolin seated on a rock.

"I thought I'd be able to last longer" he groaned as he rubbed at his leg.

"You have the brace?"

"In the bag. I packed it in along with all the other stuff, just in case."

Mako nodded and fetched it, strapping it on the knee securely. "I packed those stands, just in case. Should I use that or would it be too much?"

"I think that should do" Bolin nodded as Mako fished it out of his bag, strapping the step like attachment onto his own legs, making sure it wasn't going to slip off any time soon.

"What's holding you guys up back there? Tired already?" Opal teased with a small smile. "You sure were being high and mighty after all."

"Yeah, yeah, coming in a minute. You haven't told her yet?" he harshly whispered at his brother.

"Never came up"

"Bolin!"

"I know… I was just scared I guess…"

"Not even Opal?"

"Not even Opal."

"You do know you'll have to explain this now, right?"

"I know…"

“Bolin… you haven't been slipping on anything… right?” Mako asked with an exasperated sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Mako… you can trust me to take my meds every day and keep up the appointments. I just… never told anyone. That’s all.”

“Doesn't make me feel any better” Mako muttered as Bolin climbed on, wrapping his hands around his neck, just like before.

“Good to go?”

“Yeah. You sure you’ll be able to do this?”

Mako just opted to send Bolin a glare before starting to walk, trying to catch up with the group, which had seemed to stop at some point.

“What’s going on?” Asami asked.

“Bo’s knees were working up. Had to relieve him off it before his stubbornness gets it broken. Again” he informed, narrowing his eyes.

“What do you mean again? What is the problem?” Opal asked, eyes wide. “Bolin never said there was a problem before, especially when he hiked.”

“He’s hiked before, has he?” Mako calmly said, narrowing his eyes as he slapped Bolin on the back of his head. “Idiot.”

“I managed!” Bolin whined with a pout.

“And was bedridden the whole of next day, weren't you?” Mako guessed.

“Um… what’s going on?” Iroh asked, looking between the two of them. Did he break his leg now?”

“He might as well have tried to. Stupid. You know you can’t overstrain if you want to bend right?”

“But it’s just too… I don't like it, Mako” he said, tears of frustration in his eyes.

“I know. But it is what it is. You know you have to be careful when it comes to this… right?”

“I know… I’m sorry. I just… I didn't want to feel left out.”

“Bo… we’ll never leave you out and you know that. Just focus on that knee, yeah? You put enough force on it when you bend as it is.”

“Mako…” Opal asked, narrowing her eyes. Boy the girl was getting impatient. Beifongs…

“He broke his knee when he was 10. It set wrong. By chance the Triple Threats let us use their healer in return for working for them. The bone was set wrong, damage was done. She said she could heal it for the most part but unless he stayed off the leg as much as possible… she asked him to take it easy. And being on the streets… she knew he can’t be completely under bedrest. So we came up with this… set up. He can walk but has to rest when he reaches the limit. No overstraining unless he wants to be confined. And proper routines and medicines and stuff.” Mako explained.

“But… pro bending… all the times he accompanied us… he never…”

“I made sure he rested and took his meds and all that stuff. There were times he would strain himself and get his ass back to the healers but it’s not been that serious, nothing a few days off his feet couldn't fix. He could never keep off his feet. Silly boy” Mako said with a fond smile.

“Why didn't you tell me?” Opal whispered. “That too something this big…”

“Exactly due to the fact that you’ll worry too much. I am not invalid, to be restrained at home. I know my limits and I adhere to them… for most part. That’s why I used to back out of some stuff while in others, I’ll pause and let you go on. I didn't want anyone’s pity or anything. I am not invalid. I can still do stuff” Bolin said.

“Just like Councilman Sokka” Iroh said with a smirk.

“Huh?”

“Grandpa always loved to tell how Sokka tried to move about even after he broke his knee bad. How the Gaang had to retrain him to bed to stop him from moving. Said that Toph had one day been fed up with his antics and offered to carry him on a piece of Earth… it didn't end well” he recounted with a chuckle.

“Trust me, I’ve tried to tie him down. Does more harm than good” Mako said with a shake of his head.

“So… are we going to get along with the hike or are we planning to camp here all day?” Asami asked impatiently.

“Alright, alright, we’re coming.”

Summary:

See, Yue can play the game. She can pick out a boy to say she has a crush on when she isn’t sure she really wants to be anything other than friends with him. She can agree when people call actors hot and spout out whoever’s popular when questioned about her celebrity crush. She can play the game, use the right words, make herself look like she feels the same way everyone else does.

But she can’t entirely understand what’s so great about kissing.

Gyatso: I think it is unlikely the Spirits will grant you what you seek, Prince Iroh.

Iroh: Monk Gyatso?

Gyatso: You know of me?

Iroh: You’re infamous in the Fire Nation. The White Lotus has dispelled those lies.

Gyatso: Ah.

Iroh: Please help me.

Gyatso: I sense there is something else troubling you.

Continuation:

Iroh: Even before my change of heart, I envied monk life.

Gyatso: And why is that?

Iroh: I’ve never wanted to marry...

Gyatso: I’m afraid, Prince, that many men want the same thing, and it has nothing to do with our communal principles.

Iroh: No! No! Please believe I mean no disrespect, first of all. And secondly... I’ve never wanted to be with a woman, period!

Gyatso: ...

Gyatso: Interesting.

Iroh: It’s always been ‘you need to produce an heir, Iroh!’ I adored my wife as a person, and yet I haven’t been able to grieve her properly because I felt relieved, being free. Now I feel as if I’ve lost something I’ve paid a price for with my heart ... Lu Ten. I ask myself, does this go beyond normal grief? It seems so. Even before my change of loyalty, my daydreams were filled with what it must have been like, never having to dodge so many women interested in the royal family, and not even have to deal with plain interest as a commoner man would either.

Gyatso: Grandson of Sozin the Slayer, though you have every reason to manipulate me, I believe you.

Iroh: ...

Gyatso: I cannot help you find your son. But I can tell you of monk life, if you wish. And I can ask some Spirits if there is such a thing as an anti-love potion. That should be an interesting exercise. I won’t tell them who it’s for.

Iroh. Thank you.

Gyatso: You may find that the right woman may move past it though ... don’t be so sure that no one would give you affection without expectation, Prince.

Iroh: Please. The only title I can bear with now is Uncle.

Gyatso: I understand. Now, what’s your first question?
