There’s a girl on YouTube I don’t subscribe to, but I subscribe to a YouTube friend of hers, so I get recommended her videos a lot, and I’ve watched a few and from the very start of her channel, which isn’t very old, she’s been heavily monetized, like ads every two or three minutes on a 12 min long video, sponsors completely unrelated to her content or her audience that she pushes for maybe 2 mins each video. She did a video recently that was a “reading your tweets” video where she just elicits tweets from her followers, reads them in front of the camera, and then laughs at them and during this video, she mentioned how she has an editor for her videos (and the editing in her videos is a big part of why they’re funny to interesting) and I’m just like. I’m sorry dude. What exactly is your talent? Your videos are basically just commercials broken up occasionally by content from your followers and you don’t even edit them yourself. Let me ask you a fair question. What do you do. Quickly.

Have we though about what’s going to happen in August? Schools reopening? All students in an area will be in a handful of buildings throughout their district and then it will spread RAPIDLY! I mean think about before school in the cafeteria where students eat! Think about during lunch! During Firedrills! During passing periods! On Buses! Think about the schools that are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Think about it. And while each school district is told what they should try to do there is no way to force people that can not afford toothpaste, tooth brushes, deodorant, etc to buy masks. There is no way to also expect them to wear one for 8 hours or more a day. That feels like torture.

I want to go back to school, where I work, to give my life some semblance of meaning, but at what cost? What would it cost in lives? What would it cost in healthcare coverage? And while they say we’ll close down for 14 days from the initial confirmed case we have families where kids bounce back and forth between parents. I just feel so lost and disheartened about it. I mean honestly. And then what does this become our new normal? If it’s supposed to become the next Flu like illness? And vaccines are still a ways off.

I guess what really gets me is that if we don’t take this threat seriously there’s a lot more at stake. People make jokes about Halloween at first I’m laughing then I’m dead ass serious because this could affect us for a lot longer than that. Ho ho ho for all you interested in academic historical theory, I would like to introduce you to the idea of "silence" in public history. A concept first put into words by our man Michel-Rolph Trouillot, Haitian-American historian, it's the idea that not recording things effects the historical narrative, and that even if something is recorded if it isn't shared it is still a "silence". This "silencing" of certain events, people, and details, whether intentionally or unintentionally, shapes the public's percetion of "what actually happened" in the past.

A lot of people on this site like to talk about how history is "written by the victors" and that our idea of history is skewed and biased in favor of those in power. But that isn't always true - the losers also have a lot to say, and even the winners have conflicting ideas. It is what *isn't* talked about that skews the narrative. Sometimes it IS because the "winner" ignores their own wrongs and doesn't talk about them, making the narrative biased in their favor. Sometimes it's because people don't find certain things important at certain periods of time (ex: how everyone forgot about Alexander Hamilton and other key figures in the American Revolution until the musical blew up, despite the Revolution itself being so important to American history).

I would have to say that not talking about negative reactions to the queen and the celebrations of her death is deliberate - they don't want the public at large to remember this celebration. In the "historical narrative" they wish to build, these celebrations need to be forgotten or diminished; talking about them at all would raise their importance in the story of the queen and her legacy. So they don't. Though this effect will be lessened because of modern technology, in 50 years when academics are consulting sources about reactions to the queens death, the news will "silence" the fact that people celebrated it.

Historians, anthropologists, activits, sociologists, hobbyists, academics, and anyone else whose life intersects significantly with history - I recommend Trouillot's book Silencing the Past: Power and the Production of History. It is from 1995 but atill so relevant, an excellent work, and practically requires reading if you want a deeper understanding of how "history" is both made and percieved.

What’s wild to me is how completely all European media are committed to pretending that everybody loved the fucking queen.
