‘’I don’t think I’m scary at all. It was kind of funny watching myself being scary. Because I’m not scary.’’ Says Evan Peters, the up-and-coming up-for-anything actor best known for his extreme roles on American Horror Story, the prestige television series that treats social taboos as map points. For three seasons, Peters has excelled at playing against his offbeat boyishness by amping up his young Malcolm McDowell intensity, with results that fall somewhere between ‘’teen dream in strangler’s gloves’’ and ‘’terrifying Michael Cera.’’ He most recently appeared in American Horror Story: Coven as Kyle Spencer, the good-natured university student who is decapitated and then reanimated with the body parts of his Kappa Lambda Gamma brothers as a temperamental Rocky Horror who beats his sexually abusive mother to death with a trophy.

Over a bold chai tea with stevia, at a restaurant in Venice, California, Peters is lighthearted and dryly humorous, like a young Michael Shannon, with whom he should costar in a successful disturbing family sitcom. He wears black jeans, a well-worn t-shirt under a plaid flannel, and a necklace with a toy dinosaur pendant. He drives a 2004 Pontiac Vibe that he correctly describes as ‘’vintage’’; says that he just feels like growing his longish blond hair into a ponytail, and has a red thumbs-up permanently inked onto the to pof his right hand, that was traced over a nightclub door stamp. At one point, he raises his forearm to show off a temporary tattoo that he received the night before at the castle park family entertainment center in Sherman oaks. ‘’This is a Belle tattoo. It’s not real,’’ he explains playfully of a small portrait of the beautiful young heroine from the animated Disney film Beauty and the Beast. I tell him it’s very pretty. ‘’Thank you. She’s gorgeous,’’ he responds. I ask if Belle is his favorite Disney princess. ‘’Well, I picked her out. There was also Jasmine, Ariel and Cinderella. My other buddies got those.” ‘’What about Belle appeals to you?’’ ‘’She likes the Beast.’’ Peters says.

This summer, Peters appears as the teenage Mutant speeder Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past, the sequel to 2011’s X-Men: First Class, which has proven to be an eventful ??? movie. In October 2012, director Matthew Vaughn – who relaunched the franchise with much needed style and a new cast of young, indie + credible actors – left the film to be replaced by original trilogy director Bryan Singer. As such, fans were already touched when Singer announced that he would retell ‘’Days of Future Past,’’ the seminal X-Men time-travel storyline from 1980, an ambitious plan turned wild when he revealed that both franchises would merge into one. Cut to the 2012 San diego Comic-Con whereby unthinkable feats of scheduling – the sprawling casts of the modern-day first series and the 60’s era prequel (that include expensive names like Jennifer Lawrence, Hugh Jackmon, Halle Berry, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, Michael Fassbender, and so on). Convened with ??? new additions like Peters to unhinge popular culture. ‘’You think to yourself, ‘’wow, people really, really love this stuff.” And it makes you appreciate it more. It makes you work harder at it.’’ he says about the experience.

Peters’ role in the films is crucial but concise. ‘’It’s a huge, huge opportunity but I always make sure to tell people it’s just one scene. Easy, it's just one scene.’’ Peters says, as if talking down a rearing horse. Quicksilver has already been the subject of film industry chatter regarding lawful usage of the character, who is both the son of Magneto and a colleague of the Avengers, making him fair game for inclusion in both Days of Future Past and the 20n5 Avengers sequel (in which he will be played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson of Kick-Ass). An Empire magazine Preview of Quicksilver’s costume design was greeted with comparison to Kid Vid, a ‘90’s cartoon form of the Burger King ‘’Kid’s Club,’’ and the news that Peters had been saddled with the Halle Berry “rough wig’’ role. But his fan’s enthusiasm for the project—in which desperate X-Men from a dystopias future try to stave off mutant genocide by altering the present day—is undimmed. ‘’I think it’s the best film of the francise yet,’’ proclaims Peters. ‘’It’s pretty dire. It’s a pretty epic situation. But there’s definitely some humor in there. Its’s just badass, man.’’

Quicksilver is a departure for Peters in some ways if not others. Both X-Men and Horror Story are tight productions that take extensive precautions to protect story lines. Peters says that he did not receive the full script for X-Men until arriving at the Montreal location days before shooting. Horror Story pages are often delivered the night before a scene. The short lead time can demand a ??? almost improvisational acting process. ‘’The minute we get the script, plans are cancelled, dinner is cancelled,’’ he says about working on Horror Story. ‘’Some of it you’re like, ‘Oh shit, I have to do that?’ Screaming and crying, realizing that my whole body is pieced together and I’m not myself? I’ll probably have to work on that.’’

Peters owes his career to television. ‘’I was watching a lot of TV and I kind of wanted to be on the TV and in movies. I love movies and TV,’’ he says, and cites inspirations like Joaquin Phoenix, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, George Clooney, JIM Carrey, Chris Farley, Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump, and the millennial teen comedies Even Stevens starring Shia Labeuof and So Little Time with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. ‘’That sort of stuff. I just really wanted to be a part of it and loved acting and performing.’’ He moved to Los Angeles with is mother when he was 15 years old, and steadily won work in television, on shows including Phil of the Future (2004) and One Tree Hill (2008), and in movies like the independent films Clipping Adam (2004), his first big break, and later Kick Ass (2010). Being cast as Tate Langdon in the first season of American Horror Story in 2011 was his tipping point, playing a Skull Boy-faced high school shooter in a latex catsuit who rapes his girlfriend’s mother to please a ghost. He has since become one of the five main players to appear in all three season of the series, sterling company that includes Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe and Frances Conroy.

Now the world gets to enjoy a lighter side of Peters, like when he appeared on a 2011 episode of the G4 networks Attack of the Show and blithely volunteered that he was working a a rap song called ‘’I’ll Tap That Fucking Ass.’’ He laughs off a request to recite a verse. ‘’I can’t. That never materialized. I tried but it was too much pressure. It was just a concept. I was just trying new ideas,’’ he says, and then volunteers a different musical direction. ‘’It’s called ‘Natch Snatch.’ Like all natural snatch. Big bush. Snatch. Cause it’s nice. You know, ‘girl, you’ve got that natch snatch.’ It’s another nice concept. Probably on the same album.’’ Peters laughs in agreement at the suggestion that he is a kook in the best sense of the word. ‘’I get called a weirdo sometimes,’’ he admits ‘’But it’s like, I don’t feel that weird. I don’t feel that different. I look at everybody else and I’m like, ‘’you’re a fucking weirdo, too. You like all of your shit. I like my shit.’’ Why does one have to be weird and one have to be normal? It doesn’t make any sense to me.’’ Meanwhile, he seems to be successfully negotiating his public and private persona. ‘’I’ll try to be myself as much as I can but you obviously can’t be who you are at home in your skivvies eating donuts. You can’t be that.’’ He explains, before confirming that guy exists, with his tongue sort-of-in-cheek. ‘’You bet he does. Yeah, definitely watching New Girl. Crying.’’ But while Peters seems fairly comfortable in the public eye, fame no longer interests him. The development is not unrelated to his intense, closely-watched relationship with fiancée and two-time costar Emma Roberts (on coven and in the 2013 ?? Adult World) ‘’When I was younger I was like, ‘’That would be awesome!’’ now I don’t particularly love it,’’ he says ‘’Emma gets paparazzi a lot, and because I’m with her we get paparazzi, so it’s kind of a weird thing that I don’t love. But it’s so small in the big picture of all the positives that come with this job that I can’t really complain about it.’’ he may be surprised by the attention he and Roberts receive, but he is hardly self-ptying. ‘’Honestly, it’s not that bad. If you don’t set up a Google alert on yourself and go out searching for it then you’re not going to see it. So I don’t see it.’’ Roberts has already endured the Hollywood learning curve that Peters is now experiencing. ‘’She gives me advice, like cut your hair. She likes my hair to look nice,’’ he says, and laughs. ‘’She’s been around and knows the ropes and how to play the game very well. And she has incredible social skills. She can talk to anyone and everyone loves talking to her. I’m not that good at that stuff so she kind of helps me out with that.’’ I wonder what guidance she offers him. ‘’You’ve just got to be personable and talk to people, even if you don’t want to. Put on a happy face and buck up. Grow a pair of balls. Don’t be a little wuss.’’ Petersa says, and laughs. ‘’I mean, she doesn’t say that, but you know what I mean.’’ 

Next for Peters is Lazarus, opposite Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover and Mark Duplass a 2015 feature from director David Gelb, known for the documentary Giro: Dreams of Sushi. Peters describes the project, about a team of brainiacs working magnanimously to reanimate the dead, as a “contained Sci-Fi horror thriller” as it mostly takes place in one laboratory setting. He plays the party animal scientist. Peters encouraging sidesteps the questions of his involvement in the next season of American Horror Story, to be set in 1950 and the present day, for which Jessica Lange is practicing a German accent. ‘’I don’t know what I’m allowed to say so I’m going to say no comment,’’ he says.

‘’At the end of the day it is acting. You want to go with the biggest, weirdest, boldest shit and see if you can actually do it and go there,’’ Peters concludes, ‘’I’m very curious about everything. I feel like I don’t know that much. I’m trying to learn it all and figure it all out.’’

Steddie fic where Steve and Eddie are in their mid 30's and everyone has sort of drifted apart

Steve leans back on the reclined sofa. The TV is on, he's looking at it, but he's not really watching it. He doesn't even know why he switched it on. He has all the entertainment he needs right here in his lap. He's still wearing what he slept in and the t-shirt Eddie was wearing yesterday. 

Eddie throwing his t-shirt from the day before for Steve to wear the next morning had become a daily habit. Steve glances at the clock creeping into the afternoon now. His one hand gently rests on Eddie's chest. The other is absentmindedly playing with his hair as he lies back on Steve's thigh. The gentle beat of Eddie's heart and the rumble of his voice explaining the plot of the book he's reading reverberates against Steve's palm and fingers. Steve files it away as one of his favourite symphonies. It's a small file. He only has two more in there. Steve can remember the last time he felt this at peace. The night they brought home Corey. 

Jenny was understandably exhausted, but Steve had prepared everything she needed to relax and hopefully get some rest and everything he needed to take care of their newborn and five-year-old until she felt up to joining them. Mackenzie had gone to bed, and it was just Steve and Corey. His tiny baby boy. Steve cradled him in his arms as he put on an old basketball game he had recorded and talked him through the game. His little hand moved and lay against Steve's chest, and he was unnecessarily worried his scratchy chest hair might irritate Corey's skin, so he reached to move his hand. As he did so, Corey's little fingers wrapped around Steve's finger, and he melted completely.

"I'm here", he whispered, "Just don't want you losing your hand in there" He smiled hugely down at his son and manoeuvred his hand away. "I'm always gonna be here. Nothing is ever gonna hurt you. We're gonna keep you safe. "

Steve tunes back into the present. He knows the book Eddie is talking about. He just has yet to focus on everything he said, "So, is there a movie of this book? Sounds like there should be."

"Oh, but there is. There have been, like, animated ones, but new ones are coming out, and the trailers. My God, Steve. The fucking trailers!" Eddie says, hands stretched towards the ceiling.

"Do you need to read the books to understand it? Could someone like me watch it?" Steve asks. There is a pause, a silence, and though the vibration of Eddie's voice is missing from his fingertips, his heartbeat is a little faster, harder.

"You wanna watch it?" Eddie asks, and Steve can hear the surprise in his voice.

"If I didn't go and see a movie based on my boyfriend's favourite book, what kind of boyfriend would I be?" Steve says in mock alarm. "What if someone else asked him to watch the movie, then they'd have little secret in-jokes I wouldn't get and then bond over it, and I'd be left out. And then what if they fall in love and get married, and I'm just sitting at the back of the church like, damn, if only I went to see the movie, I could be the one with pointy ears on and ribbons and flowers in my hair, getting married to my love by a pretend Wizard?" he amps the horror in his performance, and Eddie is shaking with giggles. "Glad to see you find my potential heartbreak amusing, honey."

"I'm only laughing because you think you're an elf. You are from the realms of men, Steve, sorry." Eddie delivers the terrible news holding back his laughter.

"I could be a fucking elf, alright? I'm graceful as hell, I'm tall, I've got great hair, and I'm super stealthy. So I'm an elf, Eddie."

"You keep being grumpy like that, you'll end up an angry little dwarf, but you are not an elf. At least not in my mind. You aren't." Eddie jokes ending on a coy note.

"Oh yeah? Been thinking about me in one of your fantasy stories, have you" Steve teases, but Eddie doesn't get a chance to respond as the doorbell chimes. "Did you order food or something?" Steve asks, looking down at Eddie.

"No! I told you I'm smoking that brisket outside the RV for us. I swear to god, Steve, do you listen to me at all?" Eddie answers with a hint of his annoyed little goblin voice slipping out.

"I literally was just talking about Elves and Wizards. Of course, I listen to you," Steve thinks for a moment as there is a gentle knocking at the door and a tiny yip.

"Oh fuck! Ms Montarello," Steve exclaims, leaping out of his seat and sending Eddie's head down to the sofa with a thud, and frantically searches around for some trousers, but there are none. There haven't been any trousers for two days now. 

After the Sunday night sleepover, Steve's home had basically become a love nest. They'd stocked up on decadent foods and drinks, got a pile of movies and a stack of records, and had yet to be apart since then. The lack of jeans or any kind of trousers was because it was hot as hell and just comfier. Or at least those were the reasons they had decided on together. Eddie parading around in a snug set of boxer briefs all day was hardly the most taxing thing to look at. Steve got the feeling that previously they must have spent a lot of time this way because it just felt natural to do. Despite their outfits and closeness, nothing further than a heavy make-out session had happened. There was almost a moment on Monday reasonably early on after breakfast, and if you had asked Steve a few weeks ago to put money on who would put a stop to that, he would have lost the lot.

Eddie had been in Steve's lap, busy kissing him into outer space, and his hips had ground down towards Steve's. Once. Being a man almost trained to pick up on these queues, Steve, maybe a little too eagerly, had merely suggested they take this upstairs, but Eddie looked at him with those big eyes and shook his head in a no. He said not yet, and Steve was obviously ok with that, he wasn't in a rush or frustrated, but he was curious. So he asked if Eddie was ok, was he worried about anything? Eddie had just laughed and said no. He explained that he just wanted a little time to have those in-between experiences with Steve. Like they might have done if Eddie hadn't left. He said he found that as he got older, those steps got thrown out quickly or skipped over entirely, and he wanted them. Needless to say, Steve was more than happy to oblige, and, truthfully, it had a whole lot of fun and made the anticipation of the ultimate deed that much more exciting. Deep down, Steve agreed. Sure, sex was great, but it had become so expected in his and, from the sounds of it, Eddie’s experience, it was refreshing to do things a little differently. Plus, there was the added bonus of feeling like a kid again. The only disappointment was that he’d gained no new memories, which meant all this was uncharted territory.

"I'll be right there, Ms Montarello!!" Steve yells at the door stumbling towards the staircase.

"Graceful, as shit", Eddie chuckles, waving his hand at Steve. "Want me to stall for you?" he asks, but Steve freezes and looks wide-eyed at Eddie. He can see the mischief blooming on his face.

"Do not open that door, Eddie. I swear to Christ, she's old ok. She'll have a heart attack or something with you dressed like that," Steve says in his firmest tone, pointing an accusing finger at Eddie.

"Hey, if she's old, she's seen plenty. She'll be fine. They're like shorts, really," Eddie says reassuringly.

"Eddie. I mean it. Do not open that door! Everyone knows her around here!" Steve says, panic in his voice, and looks hard at Eddie, waiting for him to confirm he'll do as asked.

"Fine! I won't open the door, ok? Relax!" Steve takes that as his opportunity to run up the remainder of the stairs. "She'll have to meet me eventually. You can't hide our forbidden love forever, Steve." Eddie shouts up the stairs after him.

As Steve throws himself into the closet, rapidly pushing hangers out of the way, trying to find a nice shirt and slacks combo, he sing-song yells back, "I'm not hiding you, and you know it, I'm hiding your current outfit."

He hurriedly puts them on and finds a set of Oxford brogues, lacing them up quickly and racing back down the stairs, almost slipping down the last two, remembering to halt at the last mirror before the front door, smooths over his hair and quickly slaps on some cologne, adjusting his collar to hide a small blooming bruise on his neck. His next step is halted. He smiles hugely. Usually, he is tugging at his collar to hide scars from traumatic events, but today he was just hiding evidence of his overly enthusiastic lover. Finally, he gets to the living room, and there is a worrying absence of his boyfriend. "Eddie?" He calls out quietly, but there is no response.

Steve opens the front door to greet his client, but she's nowhere to be seen either. Then he hears her laughing and follows the sound, and there she is, sweet, little Ms Montarello in her mid-70s, sitting on the grass with an ice-pop in her hand, giggling. Next to her, lying on the grass, is Eddie, just in his boxer briefs, laughing and pretending to hold back the small dog that is desperate to lick his face. All the sirens in Steve's head go off at once, but he has to not lose his shit in front of a client. Sure, he didn't need to do the job, but it kept him in the community circle.  He swallows down his worry and puts on his customer-facing mask. He smiles so wide it's hurting his face and gives a big neighbourly wave as he calls out to her, "Ms Montarello. Hi! Sorry about the delay. I er…"

"Got caught up on the phone, didn't you?" Eddie adds, making goofy faces at the tiny Brussels Griffon on his chest, before turning to Ms Montarello. "He's so in demand these days, must be wonderful customers like you spreading the good word Ms…" Eddie pretends to be thinking, and Steve is trying desperately to hide his annoyance.

"Oh, call me Monty. All my friends do" She beams at Eddie and taps his arm. He turns back to look at Steve with a smug grin. She'd never told Steve to call her Monty. She giggles and turns to him, "Oh yes, Flossie and I thoroughly enjoy our classes here. It would be selfish of me not to share, now, wouldn't it? I was quite perturbed to not find you already set up outside as normal. So naturally, I was worried."

"Naturally", Eddie echoes, playing with the dog. Earning him another pat on the shoulder from his new best friend, Monty.

"But then your lovely friend here informed me through the window you were caught up on the phone." Steve's hands naturally migrate to his hips when he looks back at the window and can see the faint markings where various parts of Eddie had been pressed against the glass. Steve's eye twitches. He needed to remember to be more specific when asking anything of Eddie. "Then he offered me a drink, but I thought we'd be underway soon enough, but I did ask if he had another ice-pop on account of it being so warm out."

"So warm," Eddie repeats.

Steve desperately tries to keep the smile on his face when he realises that telling Eddie what to do, had somehow sent him into rebel mode. So not only had he talked to the client, through the window, with only his underwear on, but he'd been sucking on an ice-pop the whole time too.

"Unfortunately, he said it was the last one, but he'd only just started it and was happy to trade if I let him play with Flossie here. Which I thought was awfully kind of him, on account of it being so terribly hot," she says, and her eyes trail over Eddie on the grass.

"Was absolutely worth the trade. Flossie, here is a credit to you, Monty. She's such a good girl," Eddie says, deepening his voice, eyes focused on the dog, and Steve can see Ms Montarello slowly losing her grip on the ice-pop stick in her hand as it drops to the grass and she tugs at the collar of her blouse, with her other hand, her eyes shamefully still trailing over Eddie.

"Well, yes, that sounds great. Thank you, Eddie. I'll take it from here." Steve says wanting this whole thing to be over as soon as possible, and maybe his brain will let him forget this, too, one day.

"Well, it was lovely to meet you, Flossie" Eddie ruffles the dog's fur, reaches out for Ms Montarello's gloved hand, and kisses the back of it, "And you, dearest Monty." 

"Yes, probably best to get inside now, Eddie. The weather might turn, don't want you to catch a cold or anything," Steve tries to joke. Eddie smiles at him and gets up to his knees before Ms Montarello stops him.

"Here, dear, in case you do catch a cold" She reaches into her purse, pulls out a few wrapped hard candies and hands them to Eddie.

"Awww, Monty, you're really too kind" Eddie smiles sweetly at her, and she blushes back, "Now where can I keep these, hmmm" Eddie tucks the two candies in the waistband of his briefs, gets up and walks pasts, Steve. "You're welcome," he whispers as he walks past back into the house, turning back to send a dainty finger wave back to Ms Montarello.

"Get inside!" Steve says through his gritted teeth smile.

"So bossy, Steve!" Eddie teases back, "No candy for you, big boy" He laughs and wags a finger, closing the door behind him.

Steve claps his hands together, "Let's get started, shall we?"

He extends the crook of his elbow to Ms Montarello, who takes it, and with Flossie at his heel, they walk around to the tiny agility area.

"Mr Harrington, a question if I may?"

"Absolutely, Ms Montarello, ask away" He knows he can't refuse or upset the matriarch of the area. Especially seeing as Zee was moving on to high school in a year, he needed to be on the right side of the right people, so she could have her pick. Zee was plenty smart and talented, but that wasn't always how it worked around places like this.

"Your friend, Eddie. Is he just visiting?" 

"Well, that is yet to be decided, but I think he'll be here the rest of this week at least. Now, what were we working on? Retrieval?" Steve starts to feel very eager to return to the safe topic of dog training.

"And is he a business associate, or an old friend, or maybe something else" Steve could hear the hint in her voice.

"Oh, he's definitely something else, that guy," Steve says, trying not to laugh and decides to do the right thing, "Eddie is my partner," Steve answers. "My boyfriend…you know…romantically," he corrects and braces himself.

"Well, now, isn't that nice?" She chuckles to herself, "Such a sweet pair you make. Though I dare say there will be a few upsets in the area, now you won't be our most eligible divorcee any more." She removes her little white gloves, "You've made the correct choice in my mind, though, Mr Harrington. If I was in my prime, and my choices were someone like your beau or one of the prim and proper, stuck-up little bore fests living around here. I know I'd happily be living on ice-pops for the rest of my days,"  she laughs, and Steve relaxes a little, laughing with her. "I appreciate I'm held high on a pedestal around here, but it is refreshing to be treated normally for once."

"He's good at that", a newly relaxed Steve adds fondly with a big genuine smile, "Seeing people as the same, being kind and also, I should give you fair warning, kind of a menace."

"How long have you been together?"

"A few days", his reply caused a super surprised look on her face. The fact even surprises himself. Yes, it had been a few days on paper, but it was more complex than that. "I know, I know, it's weird, it's complicated"

"Well, it looks good on you. You don't look so tired, and your eyes are sparkling like they used to. A few days! My, my. Do they bottle him?" She says kindly, patting his arm and laughing.

"Thank you. I was worried how people might respond to me, having had a wife and kids and now a boyfriend. I wasn't gonna hide him. I was worried about how people might react and would deal with the consequences if they turned up. By the way, please don't tell him about that bottle idea, Ms Montarello. Like I said, he's already a menace and doesn't need that ego of his any further inflated than it already is."

"Don't you worry about that, Mr Harrington. You've got Flossie and I on your team. If I hear anyone say a peep about it, consider them done. Not even welcome at the Halloween pie contest. "

"You'd shut them out of the pie contest??!" Steve gasps like he just heard the most scandalous news of the century, and honestly, round here, it really was. It was one of the significant events in this community.

"And then some!" She says emphatically.

"Oh well, do I have a replacement baker waiting in the wings" Steve starts to tell her all about Morgan's baking talent as he sets up the mini-course for Flossie.

An hour and a half later, the lesson is over. It was only supposed to be an hour, but Steve threw in an extra thirty minutes of free time for the inconvenience, and her driver waited with no complaints as usual. He waves Flossie and Ms Montarello goodbye and heads inside.

A freshly-showered-dressed-in-some-of-Steve's-clothes-Eddie sits at the table staring at something on it. His hand rubbing at his chin, and his brow slightly furrowed in thought.

"Eddie? You ok?" Steve asks, sitting at the table next to him and observing the object. It's a conference telephone, and he can see that Eddie has plugged it into the wall. Steve feels a slight pang of tension when he sees that Eddie has tampered with the phone line, but he presses the button on the conference phone, and the dial tone works fine, and he relaxes again. "Eddie, you might have thought you did. But you haven't answered me. Are you ok?" Steve tries again. A habit that Steve picked up quite quickly about Eddie in the last two days when occupied by thought or task, he has totally heard you ask him a question but doesn't reply. Steve at first thought he was ignoring him, but it turns out that Eddie just has a chatty brain, and sometimes he thinks he's answered, but all he has done is said it in his head.

"Yeah…so I went to find a towel for my shower, and I opened this cupboard, and it didn't have towels, but it had loads of cool, weird stuff in it, and this is the first thing I saw, and I thought" he looks up at Steve, "I thought maybe we could call them?" 

Them. It's such a small word for so much. When what Eddie means by the look on his face is everyone. Everyone that knew them before he left. The way he'd waited for Steve before taking any action indicated he needed some help. He was worried about something, so Steve takes a guess. He reaches out and holds Eddie's hand, "Listen, if you do or don't wanna tell people about us, I'm happy with that, ok? And you don't have to answer if they ask you about something you don't want to talk to them about. I'll be right here to run interference if you need me to, ok? You don't need to tell them anything you don't want to" Eddie silently nods at Steve, and a small smile grows on his face as he squeezes Steve's hand.

"I thought maybe we could start easy? Call Wayne? I mean, he knows, but, um, he hasn't spoken to you, and I think he'd like that. Then maybe Dustin? If we asked, he could be a little foghorn of gossip for us?" Eddie looks at Steve in a way that he's looking for guidance, another squeeze on Steve's hand.

"It doesn't have to be so official, you know, honey? People can just find out when they find out. I don't feel hidden, and I hope you don't either" Steve studies Eddie's face for a reaction, "Earlier was just about how you were dressed, that's all. I told Ms Montarello you're my partner, my boyfriend. I didn't hide you. I don't ever want to do that." Steve chooses his following words carefully, "I care about you so much. I'm so happy you are back in my life, and not only that, but you're mine, and I'm yours."

"Ok. I guess I just thought if I tell people over the phone, then I don't have to see their reaction to…me being…er…you know…out" Something's gnarled twists in Steve when he thinks about Eddie opening up to someone and them making him feel bad about himself, especially about something that wasn't anything to be ashamed of. He wishes he had the name and address of whoever it was, so he could beat them down so bad their new address would be 1 Earth’s Core. But, instead, Steve channels his anger at these unknown persons into the call button on the conference phone by aggressively pushing it, the dial tone ringing out.

"You know what honey if you wanna call every goddamn person in the phone book, and we just leave answerphone messages like. Hi, I'm Steve, and this is Eddie, and we're gay for each other, and there is nothing you can do about it. I say let's do it. Let's call them all." He yells, stabbing his finger down hard into the table several times. Eddie's face seems alarmed, but a smile teases at the corners of his mouth. He seemed to like it when Steve got worked up in his defence. Steve decides to file this away for later.

Steve uses his hand to pretend he has a phone to his ear, "Hello? Hello?! Is that the white house? Yes, patch me through to the president. I have some huge news for him" Eddie smiles bashfully at Steve, his sweet dimples starting to show. "Hello? Is that Mr Hetfield? Yeah, yeah, uh-huh, just calling to let you know you missed out big time. Wait, what do you mean Eddie's the love of your life. No, do not. Don't you dare come round here. I swear James-" Steve looks horrified at his imaginary phone, "Can you believe that guy? Rockstars, man, so rude!" Eddie’s dimples are in full bloom, a slight flush of pink on his cheeks, and his shoulders shake a little with quiet laughter.

Eddie gets out of his seat and sits on Steve's lap with a sigh, running his fingers through the side of Steve's hair and looking happily into his eyes, "How d'you know what to do all the time?" Steve gets completely lost in the connection, smiling up at him, blissed out.

"I don't. I just try stuff and see if I can get your beautiful smile to turn up," Steve says dreamily in reply.

"But it's not just with me. It's with your kids and how you handle all that, like another guy being involved, and you're just like, oh, it's fine, we’re best buds. Even before, people looked to you for what to do, even if it was someone else's plan. Then, when things started to go south, the kids still looked to you, and you were always there for everyone. You keep everyone safe. How can one man do all that?" Eddie mutters, absent-mindedly twisting at a small curl piece of hair that flicked out at the nape of Steve’s neck.

"Oh well, that's the thing. I don't do it all myself. I do all that stuff because I can't live without the people I care about. Without them, I'm nothing. I need them. So when I try to make you laugh, I'm not just doing it so you get over something; selfishly, I'm not just doing it to cheer you up. I'm also doing it because when you laugh because of me, I feel worth something. So when I threw myself into the stupid situations first, yeah, I wanted to protect them, but not just to keep them alive, not to be a hero, but so I had a purpose, a use. I can do things that matter, for the people I care about, so they can be around because I need them."

Eddie's ringed hand take hold of Steve's jaw and tilts it up for a kiss, "You're my hero. Always will be." He says before kissing him again. "And you are gonna have to act the part right now, in fact."

"Huh?" Steve replies, half-dazed from the last spine-tingling kiss.

"Well, let me ask you this. If I randomly just brought up one of the names of one of your favourite basketball players in an attempt to cheer you up. How would you feel about that?" Eddie gently asks the fingers of his other hand, massaging the back of Steve's head, making it very difficult to concentrate on what he's saying.

"I guess I'd think that was really hot" Steve's brain manages to give him some simple words to barely say. That's not all he's thinking, though. If Eddie even remembered a sports team that Steve liked, he'd be so blown away by the effort he'd probably have to restrain himself from pouncing on him. Steve furrows his brow in thought and looks at Eddie, who is raising his eyebrows and smiling to encourage him.

"And just in case you forgot, not only did you bring up one of my musical heroes, but before we were rudely interrupted earlier, you were talking about Wizards and Elves?" Eddie tries to helpfully suggest, gently stroking the side of Steve’s neck, and his eyes flick up to the ceiling and the penny drops for Steve.

"Oh! Oh, I see…well, in that case." Steve scoops Eddie in his arms to carry him and then stands up, making Eddie squeak excitedly. "Let me tell you more about what I know," Steve says, walking towards the stairs. 'I know some wizard names Gandalf, Radagast, Saruman" Eddie makes an approving noise and unbuttons one of Steve's shirt buttons as he carries him up the stairs, "I know that if you roll a 20 on one of those funny-looking dice, it's a critical success, but even then in some cases that doesn't mean you automatically can do anything you want" another button is popped open. Eddie gently plants kisses along his jaw as they reach the second part of the staircase, "I also know that the guy in Megadeth used to be in Metallica, and his name is…." Eddie kisses Steve's neck, and all the names in the universe apart from Eddie's leave his brain, but then Eddie stops and waits as Steve carries him up the last few stairs, "And his name is…oh come on, brain,” Steve says kicking open the door to his room, "his name is Mustang…no it's Mustaine!! Dave, Dave Mustaine,'' Steve says finally, Eddie still in his arms, looking wide-eyed at Steve.

"Hey, you don't have any plans tonight, do you?" Eddie asks.

"Just spending time with you," Steve says, spinning them around.

"That's good news because what I'm about to do, is definitely gonna put you out of action for the rest of today" Then, faster than Steve can fathom, Eddie completely turns the tables and has Steve over his shoulder. "And then, like the awesome housewife I am, I'm gonna feed you the best damn brisket you've ever had in your life. How can I be sure of that, you ask? Well, because in about two to three hours, once you've come round, you are going to be absolutely ravenous" Steve is giggling furiously just because of the surprise, but before he can catch his breath, Eddie has dropped him onto the bed "Hold on tight to something, sweetheart. I'm about to rock your world," Eddie laughs before straddling Steve's legs and leaning down to kiss him.

Don’t be surprised if Kendall Jenner unveils a drastic new hairstyle some time soon. 

During a new Interview, the 23-year-old model confessed that she thinks ‘about shaving it all off sometimes.’   

‘I mean not like a buzz. But I think about chopping it off,’ The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star clarified in her sit-down with E! News.

Reacting to the suggestion she would look like her momager Kris Jenner with shorter hair, she added: ‘If I cut my hair that short then I just look like my mom.’

She elaborated: ‘I’ve been on sets before and they put short wigs on me like my mom. It’s too much. I literally am mini Kris Jenner. That’s the problem.’

While Kendall has flip-flopped on whether to cut her hair short, she said some of her friends have come forward and have tried ‘to push me to do it.’

Thankfully, Hajime’s parents had busied themselves in the morning. Probably out grocery shopping, he’d mentioned off hand.

With Hajime the one blindfolding you now, you can finally place yourself in his shoes, an uneasy humiliation enveloping your bones.

“We can’t exactly dress each other everyday for school, can we?”

You mumble, as Hajime lets you tug the loose tee overhead. It seems he wanted little to do with this dress up game scenario, while simultaneously attempting to save himself from the embarrassment of you catching an eyeful of his junk.

He pulls off the blindfold and stares with an uncomfortable expression and blush. You’ve been doing a lot of blushing today since... well, since you woke up in each other’s bodies.

“I guess not. But I’ll respect your body, don’t worry.”

He huffs, folding his arms across his chest.

A short gasp comes from his lips, clearly not used to having a set of breasts, and he pulls his arms away quicker than you’ve probably ever moved yourself. Hajime awkwardly settles for resting his hands at his hips, and you stifle the snort that threatens to escape.

“I trust you, Hajime. Don’t worry. And same goes for me! I won’t eat junk food before bed, and I’ll work out a lot too!”

You announce while fist pumping the air, and he rolls his eyes.

“You better. Come on, let’s go before my mom and dad get back.”

A lot of changes had to be made to accommodate your... new lifestyle.

You decided it was best to swap phones, considering you each have the same model and should probably be conversing with your classmates and friends with some sort of vague continuity.

You also had a rather short lived and awkward conversation about bathroom time and changing.

And on the way to the park, you discussed the people you each talked with the most in class, how to talk to them, and to take notes properly.

You’re thorough if anything, trying to make this awful situation as easy as you can possibly make it.

“This is exhausting... and we haven’t even gotten to play volleyball yet.”

You bounce the volleyball in the grass, huffing at the torture this body swap is turning out to be.

“At least you can spike, and have a mean serve. It would have been way worse for me if you were a libero.”

At least Hajime is looking on the bright side.

“We just have to get used to our bodies.”

You attempt to reason alongside him, amping each other up.

By the time the sun sets, you’re both panting in the grass next to each other. All former encouragements and hype lost, replaced by the dread of the coming Monday.

“We’re so fucked, I’m not used to being this tall, or having these limbs.”

You wave your arms around in the grass for emphasis, turning to gaze at your partner in this disaster.

“I feel like I’ve been launched back to middle school, it’s hard to get used to being short again.”

Hajime hums in agreement.

“I’m not that short! You’re just tall!”

“Not that tall!”

He grimaces, and you think you hear him mutter something about one more centimeter.

Before you can delve back to wallowing in misery, Hajime speaks up again,

“Whatever, we actually started doing pretty good by the end. It’s not the level we’re usually at, but I’m sure we can fake it in practice well enough. Chalk it up to being sick or something. We’ll be back to normal soon enough.”

Sitting upright, he musters a confident look that warms your chest. You’re glad he’s being optimistic, pushing away the negative thoughts that keep rearing up.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right. Now let’s get food, I’m starved.”

“Agedashi tofu is the best after practice.”

He’s gleaming, and you think it looks more natural on your face than the stern countenance that seems trademark to Hajime. Though, you do miss the rare occasions you got too see that expression on his normal face... so you make a mental note to take plenty of happy face selfies while you’re in this body.

You can’t help the soft laugh, imagining all the faces you could make in Hajime’s body he wouldn’t be caught dead making normally. When he eyes you warily, you shake your head and respond before he catches on to your plan.

“The katsudon here is way better, you’re crazy.”

You grin, mouth watering as you bring a pork cutlet to your lips.

When you bite in, it turns out to be less satisfying than you remembered. 

‘Weird, this place has really good katsudon.’

When you peer over at Hajime, he seems to be sharing a similar dilemma.

“How is it?”

You tilt your head up, gazing cautiously at him.

“It’s... okay.”

He frowns, can he seriously not enjoy agedashi tofu right now? Or was it just made bad?

“Right. Same here.”

The two of you pause, stewing for a second at the disappointment of your favorite meals, before both having the same idea to swap plates.

When you bite into your newly swapped dishes, you both simultaneously break out into wide grins.

“Whaaat, this is so good!”

“’katsudon’s not so bad either.”

You burst out into laughter, 

“I guess our tastes have been swapped too.”

“I was beginning to think this would just be a nightmare. But there’s some fun things involved.”

Hajime hums, taking another hearty bite from the katsudon. You smile at his enthusiasm, before returning to your dish.

 You continue to idly chatter about things that might be important to know, before walking home together.

When you reach the end of the street, Hajime almost makes the mistake of turning to the Iwaizumi residence. When he freezes, you realize you were equally ready to freely waltz into your own house.

You both awkwardly switch sides on the sidewalk, silently acknowledging the blunder with a light laugh.

“I’ll text you if I think of anything else. Have a good night,” you pause, “Y/N!” 

You wink at him, chuckling at the sour expression. If you thought referring to yourself as Hajime was weird, it’s even more unsettling to call yourself by name.

Hajime rolls his eyes before waving goodbye.

“Yeah yeah... Hajime. See you tomorrow.”

The interaction certainly is odd, but you laugh with a grin nonetheless. Despite the fucked up situation, it’s kind of cool to have a secret to share with Hajime.

You just hope it isn’t permanent.

When Hajime turns to the your household, he feels the nervousness come back full force.

The two of you spent all day with each other, not really worried about a stranger’s perception of them.

But now he has to deal with the people closest to you, your parents. And he’s actually quite fond of your parents, they’ve always treated him like the son they never had (as well as Oikawa), but he’s not exactly looking forward to living out their wish for a son vicariously through you.

He swings open the door, kicking his shoes off before stepping inside.

“I’m home!”

‘Remember to be enthusiastic, and keep that RBF in check!’ he hears your insistent reminder echo in his mind, almost catching himself scowling.

“Welcome back darling! Did you eat?”

He hears your mother’s voice from the kitchen.

“I had something to eat with Hajime.”

He sweats a little, your mom is oddly calculated, always in tune with your emotions. Sometimes even his, but there’s no way she’d figure out what was going on, right?

“Good. If you get hungry later, there’s left overs.”

He calls out a thanks, almost sighing in relief, looks like the panic was for nothing. 

Hajime casually (yet so, so, eagerly) heads for the stairs.

“Where are you going? Aren’t you going to say hi to Tooru? He and his mother came for dinner!”

WHAT.

“Y/N-chan! You and Iwa-chan were hanging out today? We’re you practicing volleyball?”

As if on cue, Oikawa rounds the corner and cuts Hajime off at the stairs, eyeing the athletic attire he’s wearing,

“I have something I want to practice more, you should’ve texted me.”

He huffs, arms folded as he leans against the stairway’s frame. Clearly a trick, Oikawa blew up both of your phones all day long despite being told you were busy. Hajime resists the urge to scowl at the backhanded comment. Brat.

Wait a second... how exactly do you talk to Oikawa again? Hajime should know, he’s spent a majority of his life with the two of you, but he’s currently drawing blanks.

He seems to have wracked his brain a little too long for a normal interaction, as Oikawa’s eyeing him again with an inquisitive look.

“Sorry... Tooru. You were sleeping in, and we both just happened to wake up early. Besides, you shouldn’t be practicing so much.”

He’s glad he didn’t let the ‘Shittykawa’ slip, that wouldn’t have been on brand for you at all. Out of habit though, he did punch Tooru in the arm.

“Yow! So mean, why are you hitting me?!”

Oikawa cries out, looking utterly scandalized as he rubs the sore spot on his arm.

“Because you deserve it.”

Hajime rolls his eyes, hopefully you won’t become aware of this interaction or he’ll get an earful from you. He’s still slightly convinced he’s an innocent bystander affected by some sort of cosmic punishment on Oikawa Tooru.

“Are you mad at me?!”

Hajime ignores Oikawa’s cry of complaint, jogging up the stairs. It’s hard being you, he grimaces as he beelines for the safety your room.

Finally in the comfort of privacy, he collapses into your sheets with a sigh of relief.

It could barely be considered a conversation with your mother, and Oikawa, but he’s already feeling mentally exhausted from the social exchange.

And tomorrow marks the start of the school week. Great.

Hajime slumps into your absurd amount pillows (seriously, you only need one). If he feels a little disappointed that he can’t recognize your scent anymore, he certainly doesn’t admit it, and definitely doesn’t entertain the intrusive thought longer than a moment.

Review: In ‘Dead to Me’ on Netflix, Widows Make the Best BFFs

This week’s case study in the anxieties of contemporary television: “Dead to Me,” a new series on Netflix starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini as widows who meet cute at a grief support group.

Liz Feldman, who created the show, has been writing and performing comedy for more than half of her 41 years, and she’s demonstrated some real flexibility. She was a writer for Ellen DeGeneres’s talk show and for “Blue Collar TV,” which starred red-state favorites like Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy. She wrote for conventional sitcoms like “2 Broke Girls” and “Hot in Cleveland” while hosting her own “gay-mazing” YouTube series, “This Just Out,” from her kitchen table.

Nothing she had done before, though, resembled the kind of up-to-the-minute streaming dramedy that “Dead to Me” wants to be. And while its 10 half-hour episodes have a lot of the requisite look and feel — the enervated, dolorous mood and rhythms; the mysteries within mysteries; the handsomely filmed Southern California locations — the show harks back to Feldman’s roots. At heart it’s a traditional odd-couple sitcom, albeit one that’s heavy on situation and light on comedy.

Applegate plays Jen, whose husband was killed by a hit-and-run driver, and Cardellini plays Judy, whose fiancé died of a heart attack. Jen’s angry and cynical and hard-edged, Judy’s rueful and apologetic and twee, and we know where that’s going. Jen will toughen up Judy and Judy will soften up Jen, an exchange of services made easier by the unlikely twist of Judy’s moving into Jen’s guesthouse.

Hundreds of episodes have been built around less. Short-season streaming shows don’t work that way, though, so Feldman counterpoints the comedy of female friendship with the tragedy of male condescension and predation, and sets it all within the framework of a murder mystery, or at least a manslaughter mystery.

As she makes the rounds of Orange County’s beach towns selling real estate, Jen searches for the car that mowed down her husband. Judy, meanwhile, has big secrets, which are doled out in flashbacks throughout the season. The revelations about her past are both mildly surprising and, in the way they stretch out the plot and inject conflict into her and Jen’s relationship, entirely predictable.

There’s some ingenuity in the ways Feldman works out the story’s complications. There’s craftsmanship in the details, like a running motif of Judy continually building up to confessions that turn out not to be the confession we’re anticipating. And there are moments when the comic situations click, mostly involving supporting characters like the earnest pastor and grief counselor played by Keong Sim or the casserole-bearing neighbor played by Suzy Nakamura.

But at the heart of the story, things don’t really add up or carry the emotional weight they should, because Judy and Jen are ideas more than characters — avatars of anger, grief and guilt. We’re told that their unexpected bond is based on giving each other the space to grieve in their own ways, but it often feels like they’re just indulging each other’s bad choices in ways that don’t make narrative sense.

Applegate, whose TV-comedy roots stretch back more than 30 years, most notably on “Married With Children,” gives a strained, uptight performance that superficially matches up with Jen’s personality but isn’t all that fun to watch. You don’t mind when she’s onscreen with Cardellini, though. Starring in a live-action comedy series for the first time since “Freaks and Geeks,” Cardellini gives Judy a vibrancy and a genuine peculiarity — she’s the show’s one consistent source of pleasure.

Otherwise the show always seems to be reaching for something — a complexity, an ambiguity — that it doesn’t support and doesn’t really need. It may be telling that one of the ways Jen and Judy bond is through a shared love of the 1980s chestnut “The Facts of Life.” If that’s Feldman’s way of signaling her own nostalgia for the moral certainties of an earlier sitcom era, it’s also an admission that there’s no going back.

It's really not so much that there are no dedicated, ethical, and upstanding journalists, it's just that I think we may be missing the forest for the trees. I've always thought about journalistic institutions and news makers not as gatekeepers, as they are often described in classical text, but as synthesizers of thought—weavers of not just a single narrative, but how multiple narratives mesh together. Most of the issues we talk about are not zero-sum games. It doesn't mean that you advocate for climate change that you are completely against the responsible use of whatever coal/fossil stock we have currently. Or it doesn't mean that because you support this particular politician you also deny the existence of the a virus that's causing this very global pandemic.

There are nuances. And I've gotten so tired of hearing "fuck nuance" when it comes to discussing big issues that concern as all. Because nuance, context, and discourse is all that there is that we have in order to effectively work with each other towards a common solution. Now just because it's a "big" word—nuance—that it can be difficult. It can be as simple as oh I have to take care of the kids at 9 in the morning, can we do our call at 1 in the afternoon, oh you're not available then, how about 12 a lunch call if you will, great thanks talk to you soon! Or it can be as complex as we have to agree to reduce our carbon footprint and reliance on fossil fuel products, but some countries will have to do more, especially those who are already in the process, and have the means and technology to do so, and some countries can promise less, but will have to commit to it either way and will be helped by wealthier countries.

But I get where that "fuck nuance" fire comes from. It's from exhaustion of what we call as "news" and what we perceive as the "mainstream media". Newsmakers are mainstream media. Popularity does not denote what mainstream is, in this context, influence dictates what's mainstream. And if we pander to the we said/they said mechanic of delivering "news", if we err too much on the side of entertainment and emotionally compromising consumers just to gain more "ratings" and become more...."mainstream", then, as Carlos Maza says in the video, it's going to be really really tiring.

I've been always careful how to discuss about my "dissatisfaction" about how modern "news" is being done because it may pander to different viewpoints that aren't really what I'm concerned about. There could be those who say that "oh that's because that's all fake news, mainstream media is fake news." There could also be those who say that "you just don't get what the news should be and that it's biased but it's biased towards the truth." Whose truth? Yours, mine, theirs?

My main concern, about all of this is really: our news has largely become about who and what and where, and less about how and why. When I feel, (and I may be wrong an naive), news should inspire you to learn more about the world. It should empower you to do better by your community, by trying to understand why and how things happen, not simply who are what made those things happen. It expands your mind to think not only of the local picture, but of the larger context of things as well.

And we have to fight against this "convenience" of "breaking news", because news is difficult. It takes time to research, observer, immerse, witness, condense, narrate, edit, verify, check, and ultimately, publish. IN THE SAME WAY, it takes incredible time and thinking to read, watch, digest, identify, contextualize, verify, research, witness, immerse, and observe. In some ways, it's the opposite approach for consumers as it is for newsmakers.

Though it doesn't mean that news has to be long and boring. The best piece of news should be succinct enough, and I think there are news organizations who are doing great work in this regard. Samples in the video include the NYT, Propublica. I would include Axios, The Guardian. Now one may argue that these organizations already have a bias or a leaning, and if they do it should challenge us. See where they come from. It should not embolden us to negate them, or even discredit what they have to say.

Newsmakers should be responsible. They have to be self-aware. And by doing so, maybe it could also influence a generation of news consumers who are responsible. Who are self-aware.

I stumbled again on this video while search for something I've bookmarked a few months back. I commented on this video when it was posted, and I still feel largely the same even as a lot has changed since.
