gatekeeping in general is annoying but vocaloid gatekeeping in particular gets me riled up because like. i remember when i surfed through the comments of the vocaloid unpopular opinions page on instagram and there would be an occasional Hot Take on these new young vocaloid fans that don't know much about vocaloid and therefore are not reeeaaally vocaloid fans.

which is like... yeah a lot of new fans make a lot of rookie mistakes and have some admittedly dumb misconceptions, but i feel like a LOT of older/veteran vocaloid fans were also like that when they first arrived 😭 vocaloid is a bit different from what a fandom is typically formed around yknow. its a broad category of tools and music and art and such, it's so.. non-central if that makes sense? so of course it would be confusing to a completely fresh new fan. im pretty sure thats why "is vocaloid an anime" is such a common question cuz new fans are trying to figure out What All Of This Is.

one "hot take" that really annoyed me was one that was like, "you're not really a vocaloid fan if you think miku/the six crypton vocaloids are the only ones that exist. you have to know gumi or flower or fukase at the very least!" NO!!! CUT IT OUT!! listen. i feel like the reason why a good chunk of fans might think miku and her friends (or even just miku) are the only vocaloids is because theyre everywhere!!! it goes without saying that miku is the most popular character. so, of course she appears in a lot of official vocaloid media, and CFM would throw in their own characters with her while they're at it. the concerts, merchandise, the games... they get the most cuz theyre the most popular, and probably the main media that new fans are exposed to when getting into vocaloid. im not surprised that it gives them a bit of tunnel vision when it comes to the very wide array of voicebanks and characters in vocaloid alone.

the video games in particular probably served as an introduction to vocaloid for a lot of people, myself included. i watched those project diva mvs soooo much (exposed me to many classic hits, which need i remind you primarily feature miku lol), and the project diva games only had the crypton 6. for a while, because of my exposure to vocaloid through project diva, i also thought the main 6 were the only ones. i remember when i was watching a trailer for project mirari dx on my 3ds, and one of the selling points in the trailer was like, "introducing... gumi!" (in reference to how gumi was a guest character in those games). and from that i genuinely thought gumi was a new vocaloid.

this also translates to how some ppl on that unpopular opinion page would sometimes speak about project sekai fans, aka the youngsters that are getting into vocaloid through the hot new mobile game and are posting about it on tiktok and whatnot. "aaa but they'll probably only think miku and her friends are the only ones!!" the project diva problem repackaged for a new generation i guess. at least project sekai actually includes music that features other voicebanks (gumi, flower, yuki, and ia to name some). sure, theyre not shown outright, but it's a lot better than project diva which exclusively had music with the crypton voicebanks. again, this is not a new problem 😭 (i mean, i guess ive also heard "aaa but some proseka fans think the ocs are vocaloids tooo" ...so?? that can be pretty easily explained away. who cares)

like let's be real... new fans having cringe misconceptions about vocaloid is not new at all. not every fan is going to be equipped with the vocaloid bible when they start investigating what all this hatsune miku business is after playing project sekai. some mistakes feel dumb, but the cool thing about dumb misconceptions is that theyre pretty easy to clear up when you actually explain things rather than shun baby fans completely.

ok im done rambling now. maybe this is a very specific and not at all widespread thought and my brain just got fried from looking at an instagram comment section. it happens sometimes. ive just been thinking about those specific comments and the more i thought about them the more it pissed me off lmao.

if you see this and somehow tolerated to read to the end, share your dumbest vocaloid misconception, if you had any (perhaps there were some fans that got their vocaloid bible upon entering of the fandom. or maybe i was a really stupid kid)

Hello! Thank you! I'm really glad people are having fun and participating, which was really the whole goal here.

To break character for a moment, I had been watching polls around this fandom and hadn't really seen a proper tournament bracket. But the thing with polls is that... they really are only popularity contests, not actual fights or games where a lot of chance is involved, unless you go hard into gaming them or everyone's in on a joke. So really what I was trying to figure out was whether or not the Critical Role fandom could make that happen with some kind of setup.

And honestly, even if today's result doesn't turn out any differently from the rest, I still think that we did it! I did get a bit pessimistic at times (and, admittedly, still do, looking at the state of some of my notes), but I do want to shout out the absolute unhinged chaos factor of the Veth contingent, because that kind of participation is really what this is about—making the weirdest, wackiest argument.

I'm very much a proponent of fandom being participatory and collaborative and fun, and doing a funny bit and writing a long and ultimately meaningless argument is fun! And I will not lie, I did get a little teary-eyed when I posted the final to discover that a surprising number of folks had prepped for this and also sat down yesterday to write out whole speeches, which was the whole point!

The math ain't mathing. Either Lucy is dumb as all hell in basic maths and never found it weird that she remembered her Mom while being older but her mom theoretically died when she was 1 year old, or they changed things later during filming and editting but not in the script.

Considering the confusion Fall of Shady Sands vs Bombing of Shady Sands, I bet on "changed things".

This not including that Hank arrived at Vault 33 in 2268 and presumably married Rose not long after, and I doubt 10 years before the first kid is acceptable in the Vault, considering the purpose of procreation and such.

I tried to see if the marriage dress has Rose's name but it's hard to read all the names (around 9:30 in the episode, at least the one I have downloaded for checking things easily). There's a something-aiar K Smith, married in 2272; a Ruth Cherry from 2281; someone that seems to have the middle name Luce B-something from before 2272 and after 2234, it's really hard to read the date; some P Helle from 2234, unable to read first name; apparently Andy Y. Cl-something from 2291; and lastly Steph from 2294, before Lucy adds her own name We don't know Rose's previous last name or if she had a middle name. Maybe there's another wedding dress that Rose used, or maybe they just didn't think of adding her name to it. I find this curious, because Steph kept her maiden name but Rose took Hank's last name... I wonder how these rules work in the Vault 🤔🤔🤔🤔

Also, Betty is missing in it. Not a single Betty or Pearson from around 2248 or later, when she was unfrozen. It appears she was unfrozen only to serve as Overseer, never to marry, which is curious considering the Vault's objective.

Oh, another ask: can you tell me more about how Tav'ilin wound up following Vat'il to Bhaal? (as I am assuming...) What does he think of Vat'il's relationship with Gortash?

The working story currently is that Tav’ilin messed up in someway- likely being too loud/very possibly speaking out against his sister- and was going to either be executed or turned into a drider. Luckily (and unluckily) for Tav, Vat’il cares about him! And him and Sceleritas were already talking about trying to leave, so Tav being in trouble pretty much just expedited the process.

Tav’ilin and Vat’il also just get along pretty well and tended to hang out a lot when they have a bit of free time (Vat also starts killing people Tav doesn’t like after a little while)

And as far as Gortash goes- he hates him! As far as Tav’ilin is concerned, nobody is good enough for Vat’il, least of all gross nasty Gortash. (Also doesn’t help that Vat’il and Tav are codependent to a pretty extreme extent, and Gortash existing tends to disrupt them constantly being around each other. Definitely gets worse when Tav finds out that Vat is planning on killing Gortash last instead of him)

i think no matter what happens between bolas and soulfire its going to be so interesting between bbh cellbit. cellbit lost his son 2 months ago. cellbit Just lost his husband. theres absolutely nothing stopping him anymore. bolas is fully supporting him in purgatory anything he says theyll follow because they admittedly dont want to win, they just want soulfire to loose.

purgatory is absolutely triggering cellbit and bbh back to their hunger games thought process. bbh who raised and trained and Shaped cellbit into the hunger games strategist he is. cellbit is on a full vengeance path. when they meet again and its the final wire who will win? because either way will be glorious for their personal stories. will the mentor put down his student? will the studen outsmart and outplay his mentor because he learned everything bbh knows and picked up some strategies after they parted ways?

will they return to the island and everything is water under the bridge understanding that it was a loose loose situation? or will resentment stay despite knowing the situation because the feelings in purgatory Are real. i can not Wait to see how these two make each other worse
