very interesting to me that the big three of the current hero gen in mha - shouto, midoriya and bakugo - are often portrayed as also being the closest in a lot of fics bc it's like. you've got shouto's two best friends as a boy with a volatile personality fuelled by his blind ambition and desperation to be the best, and a boy whose quirk destroys his body. like if you combined two of shouto's best friends you'd get touya but we're just not supposed to redeem him. okay

I just realized that Will didn’t get the actual gathering experience for so long. His first one was interrupted by the Kalkaras, maybe he went to the second one, but his third? His fourth? The ones where he should have been celebrating, the ones where he should have been making friends and meeting the other rangers that he could have looked up to? He was in Skandia, forgetting everything because of warmweed. He was fighting in wars, battling enemies so much larger than him, and he was doing it almost entirely alone. He didn’t get to sing songs and show the other rangers his mandola, or yell to them Greybeard Halt, for at least 4 years. He barely got the full ranger experience until he was an adult.

My problem with the 2020 Finnish production of Jekyll & Hyde in a nutshell (because I feel like I've kept badmouthing it in tags for four years now without elaborating):

They just did the show as it's written, without putting any extra spice/interpretation/silliness/aesthetic/etc. into it.

With the likes of Les Misérables, West Side Story, or Fiddler on the Roof, you can get away with that approach. They're written so well you can't really go wrong by just acting out the words without any independent thought. Heck, you could do those in t-shirts under worklights and they would still be enjoyable.

But my dearest trash musical Jekyll & Plothole? I mean, Madonna/Whore-Complex & Hyde?

I love J&H with all my heart, but I'm also 100% aware that it isn't built well enough to stand on its own. You gotta go the extra mile with the direction and/or production design. You gotta give the audience a little something more than whatever's written in the libretto. A bit of camp. Some extra intensity. Some weird fun aesthetic. Something.

And personally, I got nothing from that production.

An unforgettably forgettable experience, as simple as that.

so i don't speak japanese but i have made a few attempts at learning it and know just enough to make a fool of myself

but whenever i hear people complain about a bad translation, and claim something like "well they added something that wasn't there, so clearly it's an agenda >:("

i remember that, from my BARE understanding of japanese, that it's an extremely context rich language, meaning that when you say something to someone, they can read into into it a LOT. there's a lot you're not saying directly, but you actually mean, and most people who are native speakers know what you mean

as opposed to english, which is a low context language, meaning we have to spell out what we're saying a lot more.

so if you machine translate a sentence from japanese to english and it says one thing, then you look at the official translation and it seems to have added something.....

that's just localization, by which i mean adding the context that japanese speakers would understand implicitly, but would be lost on english speakers. the gist of the communication is still the same, it's just that direct translation doesn't express the layers that a native speaker would have gleaned, so WITHOUT that localization, us english speakers would have genuinely LOST a lot of understanding.

Yes it was 🥲 I've rarely read fics for other fandoms so a lot of the backhanded criticism comes from here. If it's not blatant kink shaming its criticism of flow or whatever else ppl want to be mad about. It's why I put so much heavy content warning and tag my work the way I do. Even if the tags do my work a disservice because it makes it seem worse than it is, I'm doing literally everything I can to warn people that if they are not into XYZ, then this is NOT FOR THEM

Sometimes I get a bit ticked about the whole "invisible Canada" thing, but I went to a visiting scholar lecture about the Battle of the North Atlantic in WW2 from a British academic this morning, and he verbatim said: "Canada isn't involved enough it makes a difference."
