Happy birthday and Hogswatch to this post. It's not the most reblogged Discworld quote I've posted, but its had some of the best comments/tags. And I swear it's been reblogged at least once a month since posting, making it the first time the pretentious "let's have this Christmas thing last all year" has actually happened, to my knowledge.

I could post a new quote, but I just feel like these reactions are worth more. You want more Hogfather quotes, read the book -- it's basically quotable from start to finish. Or there's a two-part TV movie adaptation. It's alright, and has this scene, but there's so much that got cut due to simply being unfilmably unadaptable.

it's been a hot minute since i read the odyssey, so this list is non-exhaustive, but epic has made me very odysseybrained rn so here's some of my favourite pieces of odyssey lore that were changed/not included by jorge:

odysseus having his men plug their ears with beeswax while passing the sirens but not doing it himself because he was curious real bad, and instead opting to have his men tie his ass to the mast of the ship and ignore all his kicking and screaming so he could listen for fun and survive

that one fucking guy who got drunk as a skunk at circe's and ended up on her roof the night before the crew was set to depart for the underworld, and when he awoke hungover to see everyone leaving without him, forgot where he was and ran off the roof breaking his neck and killing himself. the crew noticed he was missing but didn't look for him, which made things presumably at least a little awkward when he was the first guy they met upon entering the underworld

ok i've seen some people criticize odysseus for cheating on penelope with circe and calypso which is already a dogshit take cause obviously consent wasn't being freely given in a literal hostage situation, but also i'd like to point out that if he was a serial cheater he would not have ignored nausicaä like that?? she wanted him so bad and his ass did NOT care (probably cause she didn't fucking kidnap him or use sex as a ransom for his friends, hm.......)

also i'm very tickled by the idea of him in some versions of the story being like "hey kid, you're sweet and all, but you're too young for me and i'm happily married...... you know who IS single and your age though??" and then he sets her up with his kid (if someone knows which tellings have the nausicaä and telemachus kissing content in them PLEASE let me know which ones. for research purposes)

this one's only tangentially related but i need to talk to someone about the loose movie adaptation where ulysses is a runaway prisoner in the 1930s american south who starts a band with his friends called the soggy bottom boys. what was all that about

something i see a lot in books is like. capitalizing a word where it really doesn’t need to be? like for an example in Who Censored Roger Rabbit they spell toons as Toons. and i understand it’s probably supposed to make it clear that this is a deliberate Word For Something That The Author Kinda Made Up but like. to me it stands out too much. humans are just humans. a cat would still be a cat and a dog a dog. but toons are Toons. idk i think it just feels unnatural and unnecessary. if toons are natural to the world here why do you need to capitalize the T

Guys. Guys. Please. Not every adaptation has to be live action, not every adaption can be live-action, because making it so can rob the original IP of its very essence. If making everything look realistic diminishes it to the point where you literally have to animate it anyway to make it recognisable, then why even try to make it live action in the first place? What is so bad about animation that we have to make things live action because it’s otherwise “just for kids”? Why are we ignoring a perfectly good medium only to force a different medium to do what the former was designed to do only much worse?

Some things can only be done by animation, in the same way that some things can only be done by books or musicals or games. That’s what makes adapting things so difficult, and it’s what makes choosing the medium you want to write in so important.

i will admit to being nervous about the nevermovie bc i find musicals are very hit or miss for me, but i think one of the funniest (and also neatest) things they could do is have morrigan self awarely comment on and refuse to partake in the songs at first and as she grows more accustomed to nevermoor and the whimsy of the world, slowly begin to partake and include herself in the songs

Oh the second no contest. Fantastic action, a well-written story, and while it's not a faithful adaptation it's kinda on par with Super Mario Bros. 1993 (my former pick for best video game movie) Like I'll rewatch this, any time. The first movie is just... whatever, and the third is so poorly written it feels like an hours worth of story was left on the cutting room floor. That and Shadow's story is EXACTLY Knuckles' all over again... plus it made the Wade Whipple mini-series REALLY really pointless. All Sonic 3 was to me was proof that Jim Carrey is a major disappointment and that the fourth movie will prolly be better if only for the Terminator-ass plot. I guess it's sort of like The Last Airbender (If that movie was middling instead of boring to tears) like yeah it's not great, but at least the original still exists. Tho unlike TLA (which was also made by Paramount... maybe all Paramount movies suck aunno LOL) I'll still watch Sonic 3 again, just... only the action's any good. Everything else is just "why are you wasting my time?"

I finally watched The Phantom of the Opera, and now I have to grapple with how much Operetta makes absolutely no sense.

Like I'm wracking my brain, and the only conclusion I've come to is that she'd make sense if she wasn't a ghost at all, but a siren.

Maybe after years of being cast out by his fellow humans, Erik finds refuge in the monster world which welcomes him with open arms, and also gives him the chance for a new start.

And given his love of opera, he falls in love with a siren and they have a child together. Thusly making Operetta half human, half siren.

This way, she can keep her hypnotizing voice, since she sure as hell wouldn't have gotten it from Erik.

i dont think they were trying to make him a 'villain'- antagonize him a bit maybe. STILL THOUGH it felt pretty forced, if at the very least out of nowhere (just like the whole bit of hank and erik bonding over raven ..... if i may be so bold to say....). raven's generally been edgy about charles throughout the movies but why did hank have to do him like that too 😭😭

i dont mind when media portrays charles as less-than-perfect- that's what makes him such an interesting character: wanting to do the right thing but inevitably being human and messing up along the way to do so, or thinking his way is right And Maybe On Paper It Is but then in action its.. not that simple

if the movie did it better then id be chill maxing Ok Cool Love It- but having hank try to act as though charles couldnt POSSIBLY be more distraught over raven's death was actually insane 💀💀💀💀
