Dean Winchester is trans-coded (seasons 1-5)

To start with, his name. We know Sam and Dean are named after their grandparents, Samuel (grandfather) and Deanna (grandmother). Why did John and Mary, knowing that their firstborn was a male, didnt called him Sam, keeping the name Deanna for a future daughter? Only explanation, Dean wasnt born male.

His role in the family. It is a fact that because of patriarchy and mid to bad parents, eldest daughters tend to became a third parent for their younger siblings, just like Dean with Sam. While it is possible for eldest sons to fulfill that role, it is far more common with people who were assigned female at birth

Multiple times, people usually assume Dean is gay. When he wonders why, Sam answers that his extreme masculinity can be interpreted as a way of compensating homesexuality. While this can be true, it also makes sense (even more) that this over-compesanting masculinity is his way to do cis-passing

In the episode in which Dean travels to future, future!Dean asks present!Dean for something only the real Dean knows, present!Dean answers with that time when he tried on stereotypical woman clothing and he liked it, which could be gender euphoria

Again with the hyper-masculinity, while it can be a transman trying to do cis-passing, it can also a transfem trying to convince herself she is a man, a way of denial

Wherever you headcanon Dean as transmasc or as a transfem, it is indeniable that he is trans-coded

Minecraft youtuber TommyInnit leads overall with 8 ships (out of 24 Youtube ships), followed by Tony Stark with 7 (out of 33 Marvel ships), and Sam Winchester from Supernatural and The Doctor from Doctor Who with 6 respectively.

Characters

This is the overall gender distribution:

It is currently scewed by the fact that one of out usually 3 rankings each year is exclusively femslash, inflating the number of female characters in the overall set. This number will be decimated once we look at the actual co-ed, yearly rankings. However even with these inflated numbers, male characters still solidly outnumber female ones.

These are the numbers for any gender tags other than straight up "M" and "F":

"M | Other" was represented by exactly 5 characters/people. All of the fictional ones are some variety of deity or otherwise celestial being. All but one of "F | Other" were (alien) Gem characters from Steven Universe.

The only two unaligned nonbinary characters in the set are the canon nonbinary character from Owl House, and the Venom Symbiote. (Yes, the goop. The Venom goop.) All of the drag queens represented explicitly use she/her in drag and he/him (x3) or he/they (x1) out of drag (at time of data collection).

All of these are out-numbered by ambiguously-gendered self-insert characters like player characters and "x Reader".

There are no (binary(-aligned) or explicitly medically) trans characters in the set, as (as far as I can find on the wiki) the Owl House nonbinary one does not have in-universe transition portrayed or birth assignment specified (they are voiced by transmasc nonbinary actors). This is in spite of canon trans characters and real life trans people, who didn't make the ranking, existing in the fandoms represented, like in DC's Supergirl, My Hero Academia, RuPaul's Drag Race, One Piece, Marvel Comics, Heartstopper, etc. There are no explicitly intersex characters/people represented either (as far as I'm aware).

Ships Overview

As for ship gender combinations, men loving men outnumbers any other type, even with the inclusion of, again, one whole ranking (of the three total) per year with ONLY women loving women ships:

Straight ships are outnumbered by both same-sex categories, although, once again, I expect this to change once we look at the co-ed rankings without the femslash bump, with straight ships likely out-numbering wlw ships there.

Taking out straight up mlm, wlw, and het ships, these combinations are left:

Although there are less "M | Other" characters than "F | Other", they account for almost the same amount of ships as each other, likely due to the male-aligned characters/people not being shipped with each other (like the Crystal Gems) and spanning more fandoms (5 rather than 2), leading to a wider spread of ships.

Our "Other" characters are shipped with characters of opposite genders, providing balance to their (small) contribution. The singular canon-nonbinary non-goop character is shipped with their canon ex-partner.

In the ambiguous stack, the vast majority is men (and male-aligned folks) being shipped with ambiguous characters (ie self-inserts).

Marvel (as the fandom with the most ships) has ranked second for all of them. Youtube is the fandom with the most mlm ships, as the only woman that made it into its 24 ships is the real life wife of the guy she's being shipped with.

This chart shows the number of fandoms that either do not contain any ships of this type, consist exclusively of ships of this type, or where over half of the fandom's ships are of this type.

The only two (2) fandoms (with multiple ship types) that have more than 50% straight ships are Game of Thrones and Doctor Who, so congrats to them on having the best-written hets and the least homoeroticism in media apparently. 👏

White folks vastly outnumber any other racial group. East asians are the next-biggest portion, followed by ambiguous and non-human characters.

Latin folks make up the largest portion, followed by black folks. All other groups have less than 15 characters in the entire (922 character) set. There are more indigenous folks in the set than there are south asians.

I call the last one of those "The Big Oof" as there were only 12 ships (out of the 600 total) that didn't contain any white or east asian people.

The first one shows how many fandoms only have one racial group and how many have multiple:

It is more balanced than the interracial figure, pointing to there being a number of fandoms where there are multiple racial groups overall but several characters are only being shipped with characters of their own group.

Marvel once again leads with 8 groups (due to its overall higher numbers of characters/ships). It is followed by The 100 and DC tied for second with 7 groups each, and Star Wars in third with 6. Teen Wolf and Genshin Impact follow in fourth with 5 groups respectively. All other fandoms had less than 5 racial groups represented.

TW: Gender Dysphoria/Body dysmorphia

So, I need some help. I have been struggling with my gender identity for nearly 4 years (in recent memory) and I don't know if I am faking my dysphoria. I am 25 and assigned female at birth but I have been "queer" since about 15 years old. I was somewhat comfortable in my gender though I did and do still wear primarily men's clothing and keep my hair very short. I have also had extreme issues with the more feminine parts of my body and they cause me a lot of physical and mental discomfort to the point where I wear overly bagged clothes or try to hide them in some way. I don't like being addressed with female pronouns and, as time goes on, I am starting to be bothered by the pitch of my voice. I have also idolized/kinned Dean Winchester for as long as I remember and I tend to relate to characters such as Will Graham, Peter Parker, etc. However, I do have a handful of mental disorders that I worry might be amplifying these discomforts into something more than they are so I don't know if I am accidentally gaslighting myself into believing I am trans. I don't know if anyone else felt this way leading up to their transition or if they realized that the feelings were just symptoms of overthinking! I don't know if cis people worry about being trans all of the time or not. 😅😅 I would love everyone's opinions and experiences because I hate being stuck in this loop of discomfort and uncertainty. I don’t even…um. So the alien wanted the other two to destroy their own planet? Anyway, the Doctor and Yaz thwarted that and Graham and Ryan trapped it in a stasis chamber so no harm no foul? I dunno. It was a pretty weak episode

Yeah, I mean if I were Sam, I'd honestly feel more comfortable bringing up something symbolic like this because it allows it to live in this strange world of safer(?) abstractions.

I mean, there he is, pointing out something he passively "did" as a mere infant (being born, being targeted by Azazel) as a way to bizarrely equalize himself and Jack. It feels like a very forced way to parallel them.

A closer parallel could've been when soulless Sam almost sacrificed Bobby, or when Godstiel called them nostalgia and almost moved to kill them, or when Demon Dean was seconds from bashing Sam's head in with a hammer, or when Mary almost blew Sam and Dean's brains out while under the MoL influence, etc etc.

These "almosts" are soooo much closer in nature to what actually happened than Sam pivoting to the circumstances of his birth! "I killed mom" has the same abstract feeling of self-worthlessness that "not being pure" does. It's inherent. Inevitable. Uncontrollable. Just a fact of life. Passive.

Aside/// Sam's internalized hatred of "ever being born" doesn't happen in a vacuum, for sure. This is something that numerous characters also blamed Sam for, like the clever "aside" to the audience in the "Nutcracker" game during Changing Channels:

GAMESHOW ANNOUNCER: Would your Mother and Father still be alive... if your brother was never born?

(The answer is, of course, at least in Gabe's world: yes.)

But it's still interesting to me how it unintentionally allows Sam to sidestep... a lot of real decisions, like what you mentioned, the Emma thing.

It also allows him to sidestep his not-decisions, like doing nothing after Kevin got kidnapped. Even later, when Sam focused on "letting Dean down so hard he had to turn to other brothers," he doesn't explicitly mention his abandonment OF other people, like for example Kevin. Crowley does this exact same thing imho when he rants about Kevin's (lack of) safety being mostly attributable to The Winchesters (TM) positioning himself as the wise, savvy one who "warned Kevin" of the danger (no matter that Crowley tortured Kev and killed Kev's relatively harmless fellow students. Not to mention tortured his friggin' mom). If memory serves, Cas calls Crowley out on this, lol.

Anyway, later when Lucifer mentions "the Amelia and the dog thing," Kevin does not feature there either, at least not obviously? By contrast, with respect to Dean's feeling of guilt and also the later assignment of blame for Kevin's death by Sam, Crowley and Metatron: Kevin gets mentioned a good bit! Usually directly TO Dean. Surprise, surprise.)

I personally think it'd be much more emotionally trying for Sam to bring up actual things he's done over the years (something-something human sacrifice, almost killing Bobby, Emma, that one Lester dude he preyed on, Oskar, etc.)

It reminds me a bit of his words in Tombstone to Jack:

Sam takes a deep breath, trying to follow up all that heavy honesty with his own wisdom. This time, he tries mimicking Cas’s earlier words, which seemed to work in the car. (Notably, he misses them mark because he’s not specific like Cas was. Cas underlines that he’s killed people he loves, but Sam keeps it vaguer: “Things we regret.”) And with Sam, Jack shuts down again. He’s sharp about it this time. Jack’s body language has Sam reeling back, hands up.

transcript: SAM: Jack, look, this life, what we do, it's… it’s not easy. And we’ve all done things we regret. JACK (very sharp): Just don’t. 

So yeah, while a feeling of inherent self-worthlessness is absolutely crushing in its own right, I think it's fascinating to consider that in some ways, it allows for an abstract "original sin," that allows Sam to look away from his actual mistakes.

(And again, I suppose we're all a little bit like this as humans. It's hard to admit when we fail, so I have sympathy!)

Society if instead of saying he killed Mary too by “being born,” Sam brought up something much more comparable. Killing…Emma. If was just a moment, a split second decision.
