De Wispelaere herinnert zich: ‘alles is zijnde en nooit geweest’

People have been living in Assebroek for quite some time now. After some research we found pictures of how things were before.
These pictures were made in the same street, de Astridlaan. De Astridlaan is to this day the main road in Assebroek. Although you probably wouldn’t be able to recognise it now.

Miracles in Assebroek
If you’re into churches and cemeteries, Assebroek is most definitely your place to be. The churches have a certain calming atmosphere around them which is worth a visit. The church of Ver-Assebroek is considered to be a place of pilgrimage. If you look around the church, you might be able to find a certain Maria figurine. But this is not just your average Maria figurine. This one has a story to it. The story goes like this: there’s a Christian man who’s a crewmember on a boat filled with Protestants. Every night the man would pray to his little Maria figurine, but the others laughed at him and threw his Maria overboard. The figurine did not sink, it kept following the boat. The crewmembers believed this had to be a sign of the devil and tried to threw the Christian man overboard, but when the captain saw this, he demanded for the figurine to be fished up. To this day, the little figurine has a special place in the church of Ver-Assebroek. Want to know a little more? Click here!

Lieve
“I’ve been living here for quite some time now. I grew up in a desolate village, so this almost feels like a city to me. The first time I visited this place, I met my husband to be in the local community center! I enjoy the atmosphere around here. You’re so close to nature, but at the same time the ancient city of Bruges is only 10 minutes away. “

”As someone who was born and raised in Assebroek, walking around these streets just feels like home. I’ve travelled a lot and I travelled for a long time, but even though Assebroek isn’t adventurous, it never fails to make me feel at ease like no other place ever could.”

Are we there yet?
Assebroek is very easy to reach. You can get there by bus, bike, car or (if you’re lucky) even by horse. We can’t assure you that the horse is going to be there, but sometimes there is a charming carriage and you can just hop on. Obviously; all of this happens at your own risk. Don’t say we didn’t warn you! Taking the bus is probably a better idea; it’s cheap, easy and quick. the lines from Bruges to Assebroek are 1 and 11, but it’s probably best to visit the official page of “De Lijn” just to be sure, since busses often change their timetables. Assebroek is very picturesque so it’s really nice to have a little ride by bike. You can enjoy the nature and take a little pit stop at the many places that have been created to come at ease. If you’re walking through the streets, you can always catch a glimp of people’s living room. And is there a better entertainment than that?

Don’t fear the graveyard
If you go to Ver-Assebroek, take your time to visit the cemetery. This graveyard is right behind the church of Ver-Assebroek. If you take a stroll around the old part of the cemetery, you’ll find graves that belong to soldiers or a once wealthy banking family. This peculiar graveyard is interesting to discover. Enjoy your stroll!

What?
You’re probably wondering, what is this small quirky town? And why on earth should I visit it? Assebroek is a suburb in the medieval city of Bruges. Assebroek is home to about one fifth of the population of Bruges. At first sight, Assebroek looks like your average suburb. But once you start exploring the small streets, once you meet the people, Assebroek turns into something special.

Back to nature
Assebroek is very well known for its beautiful nature. De Assebroekse Meersen have quite a history. In medieval times, Assebroek was referred to as a quagmire for horses. A few years ago some people noticed some mysterious eerie circles in the landscape. Everyone started to speculate about how they got there. Were there aliens in Assebroek? Footsteps of ancient elephants? Marks from some sort of Stonehenge? Scientists decided to take a closer look at it. Eventually they managed to find the answer. In the 12th century, there must’ve been a castle for the feudal lord of Assebroek.
De Meersen is an absolute must when you visit Assebroek. Especially during spring time this lush piece of nature will steal your heart.

Where to eat
You have to eat, so it would be a waste to eat something that doesn’t even taste nice. Especially when you have so many good places to eat! Those who enjoy a more exotic taste, can visit the Indian restaurant Shalimar or the Chinese restaurant Het Drakenpaleis. If you want to try the authentic taste of real Belgian fries, you can try one of the so called frituren. After a long walk in the Assebroekse Meersen you can try one of the local beers or enjoy a freshly baked waffle in ‘t Leenhof.

Amusement
Assebroek has a lot to offer. You’ve got Daverlo, a place where worlds collide. You can go to the library and search for your favourite book or you can go sporting in the great sporthall or go skating in the skatepark. After that you can go to the café for a cup of coffee and a snack.
