Prompt 16 - Assassin AU
@wolfstarmicrofic April 16, word count 508
Sirius was one of the best. He never missed. He’d been trained by the elite and taken out some of the worst people in the country. McNair, Mulciber, Pettigrew, Avery. The list went on and on. He couldn’t even remember how many there were.
His latest assignment was for some bookish man by the name of Lupin. He read the file sent to him with all the vital information he would need. It didn’t say why he needed to be taken out, but the files never did. If his boss deemed them a threat, it was his job as an assassin to deal with them.
He sat waiting in the empty flat that overlooked the park Lupin frequented daily at 15:40 every day.
He kept his eyes trained on the main entrance. Then, at precisely 15:40, a tall, sandy-haired man walked through his eye-line. He couldn’t see a face, though. He needed a positive I.D.
He followed the man to the duck pond. It didn’t help that half of him was obscured by hedges. The man turned his head. It was definitely Lupin. His finger inched towards the trigger. He was a hairs-breadth away from setting the trigger off when Lupin bent down. Sirius paused his shot, waiting for him to rise again.
Lupin straightened he’d turned away from Sirius’s direction, but that didn’t matter. Sirius lined up the shot again and prepared to shoot. When Lupin spun around in a circle, his nose pressed to the nose of the little boy in his arms. They giggled and laughed together as they spun around.
Sirius immediately aborted the mission. He refused to shoot someone holding a child.
He pulled his phone out and dialled the only number on it.
“You didn’t tell me he had a child!” He growled into the phone.  “It does matter. I won’t kill someone holding a child.” He listened to his boss berating him for not doing his job. “What’s he even done? He doesn’t look dangerous.” He listened again. “No, I really think it is my business when there’s a child involved.” He waited. “What information?… And why does that require me to eliminate him?… That’s ridiculous. Why don’t you protect him?… It’s a human life, Albus, and he’s done nothing wrong!… No, I refuse to do it on those grounds… Then Ill protect him… Then I resign… Either I protect him on your orders or consider me your enemy… Good, I’m glad you’ve seen sense… Yes, I’ll make contact in the morning… I’ll need further information on him and who else knows he had information… Good, thank you, Albus.” He hung up and began packing his equipment away.
It was going to be interesting. He’d never protected anyone before, nor did he know much about kids, but he was about to learn.
He left the flat without a trace, as though he’d never been there. He took a leisurely stroll through the park and watched the luckiest man alive push the little black-haired, green-eyed boy on the swings.

Assassin AU / @wolfstarmicrofic / 874 words
CW: sexual conversation
“You look bored, how about I take you to bed instead?” Sirius whispers in Remus’s ear.
Remus jolts, spinning to look at Sirius with wide eyes. Sirius suppresses a smirk.
Sirius had been hired to kill Lyall Lupin’s son, Remus Lupin, and he was going to be paid a hefty amount for it.
He knew that Lyall worked at the ministry. This wasn’t the first time he’d been hired to kill one of its members. His client harboured strong animosity towards Lyall and wanted to kill his son out of spite. That made Sirius’s job easier. Killing an important government official was always a hassle. He’s sure mini Lupin would have become just like his father anyway.
Sirius completed his assassinations in various ways depending on the context. Sometimes he’d go to their homes and kill them directly. Other times he’d poison them. His favourite technique, however, was to seduce them. It left them vulnerable and unassuming.
Sirius had been watching Remus the past hour to get an impression of him. So far, the man seemed reserved and awkward. Sirius decided on his seduction technique because Remus kept glancing at him and Sirius knew what those looks meant.
Remus’s entire face goes red at his words and he stutters unintelligibly. Eventually he laughs nervously and Sirius takes that as cue to lean towards him.
Remus shoots his hands up to stop Sirius from moving, hands on Sirius’s chest.
Perhaps Sirius had read him wrong. He looks into the other’s eyes to get a better feel of the situation. Remus’s eyes were still wide but he looked innocently confused.
“Unless you prefer the old fashioned way where I take you out first,” Sirius says, undeterred.
“I— oh god,” Remus replies, “I’m so bad at this, please don’t put me on the spot.”
This pulls a surprised laugh out of Sirius. “No need to be nervous, I can lead and take control,” he says with heavy implication.
Remus wets his lips, eyes darting around before they fall to his feet. He drops his hands to his sides.
He says nothing.
Doubt creeps into Sirius. Had he read the situation wrong? Was Sirius not what Remus wanted? It left him feeling unnerved and slightly agitated.
“Not interested, then?” Sirius asks calmly.
Remus continues avoiding his eyes, face flushed. “I am so terribly embarrassed,” he responds softly.
Understanding dawns on him and Sirius has to bite down on his lip. “One of the shy ones?”
Remus’s eyes flicker up at him then back down. “Unfortunately.”
Sirius leans against the bar, remaining close to the other. “It’s alright, I’m good at coaxing eye contact when I’m sleeping with someone. I’ll reward you with lots of praise, I promise.”
Remus chokes and snaps his head up to Sirius, his eyes going impossibly wide. “You—“ He takes a deep, shaky breath. “You can’t just— say things like that.”
Sirius pushes his tongue against the inside of his cheek, trying to hide his smile. He was leaning into his role as the seducer but it came easily to him. Remus was someone he would have slept with outside of work. Sirius’s eyes linger on his lips and he watches Remus swallow nervously at Sirius’s attention.
Remus’s breaths were coming out short, mouth slightly open and skin flushed.
Sirius moves to gently pull him in by the waist. “Don’t you want to taste me?”
His eyes flutter shut and he groans in response.
To Sirius, it was the sound of victory.
“I— Please,” he breathes out.
“Good boy,” Sirius murmurs, fingers rubbing delicate circles on his waist. “That’s it.”
Remus opens his eyes and Sirius is thrown off-kilter at the tender gaze. “I can’t. I want it— badly, but my father won’t allow it.”
Sirius blinks. His curiosity ignited. “Why not?”
Remus glances away bitterly. “He doesn’t want anyone to see me.”
This answers nothing and leaves Sirius with more questions. Seeing this, Remus offers him a kind smile. “Thank you for the offer, you’re quite gorgeous.”
Sirius feels a bit tingly. He won’t lie and say he wasn’t intrigued (in more ways than one) but he had a job to do. He didn’t need to seduce Remus to be able to kill him.
Someone pulls Remus rather harshly out of his grip. Sirius looks at Lyall Lupin’s sour expression.
“I’ve finished discussing with the others. Let’s go.” His hand is firm on Remus’s shoulder.
Skilled in picking up pieces of information, Sirius’s eyes cut to where a small group of men are leaving the bar. His gaze comes back to Lyall who is scowling at him while sending concerned looks to his son. Remus isn’t looking at either of them.
Sirius takes in Remus’s scars and he feels like he is seeing him for the first time. The scars closely resembled the ones his current client had.
The puzzle started forming in Sirius’s mind. It was just out of reach.
Lyall protectively pulls Remus away and Remus sends Sirius a mournful look.
Yes, it looked like Lyall was harbouring a secret regarding his son and Sirius would be damned if he didn’t figure it out. He had a feeling it had everything to do with the man that hated Lyall.
Fenrir Greyback.

Marauders AU where the Black family are trained assassins and the cousins (Regulus, Sirius, Narcissa, Andromeda, Bellatrix) were trained like how Black Widows are trained (like the Marvel characters, not the bug, if that wasn't already clear enough)
OH!!
WHAT IF THEY'RE STILL CALLED BLACK WIDOWS!!!?
Omg
Anyway
What if, Sirius and Andromeda were the only ones to ever get out, and they're now living, simi, normal lives.
Until Sirius gets a message from his baby brother, asking for his help to destroy the "family business" because Narcissa is pregnant and they don't want the next generation to go through what they went through
I'm talking Black brother angst! I'm talking minor/background ships! I'm talking Regulus not understanding very many social cues cause he was literally only taught how to unalive people. I'm talking James/whoever you ship Reg with, going fearl when they see him fight so effortlessly! I'm talkin Sirius having a hard time letting Regulus do what he does best, assassin, cause in his mind, he still sees Reg as the little boy who was afraid of thunder and would crawl into his bed at night. I'm talking angst with a happy ending! I'm taling Walburga/Orion bashing! I'm talking freedom!
Please someone write this

“i bet you hate snape cause of the marauders fandom-“
no actually, i’ve always hated him since day 1 for the way he bullied and tormented harry as well as his other underage students for literally no reason. yall love to complain about holding the marauders accountable for the way they treated snape but when it’s suddenly snape’s turn yall instantly jump to defend and excuse his actions as if he wasn’t a grown ass adult bullying and projecting his trauma onto children.
like with the marauders at least they have the excuse of being immature kids, but what’s snape’s excuse? he’s an adult, he should know better.

hey, I heard you liked assassin AUs? this ask turned out long as eff, whoops.
tw: mentions of death, murder, gore, dismemberment, mutilation, poison, and probably more. General assassin stuff. (not described, just mentioned)(murder, death, and poison are mentioned throughout, but the rest is just in the first paragraph)
so:
Everyone has heard of the Duke, he’s a terror. He kills for anyone who pays him, and he does it gruesomely. If you want hearts ripped out of chests, people ground into sausage meat, one body part sent to each of the corpse’s loved ones, you go to the Duke. I heard he lives in the forest near… I know someone who knows someone… he’s easy to find, just go north. The Duke is the kind of story older kids tell to their younger siblings. He’ll find you, he’ll rip you in half… Other, less well-known assassins have said that he won’t last long. They’ve seen killers with his style before, they get careless. They get caught. It hasn’t happened yet though, so who knows? One of those assassins is found impaled the next day, DUKE carved into his chest as a warning to the others.
Very few have heard of Anxiety.
Good, Virgil thinks, as he slips ricin powder into a teabag. (He works as a castor oil salesman, he has to use the byproduct for something.) He mails the teabag to the address written on the discreet envelope he had received, and another corrupt politician is dead within the month. Technically, Virgil’s never killed anyone. It’s none of his business what his clients do with his products, after all.
One day, Virgil is collecting the mail from the false address he uses as Anxiety, and he notices a letter. The stationery is too fancy, the handwriting would be easily identified—either this client is very stupid or they don’t care about being found out, which amounts to the same thing regardless. He carefully opens the letter.
It contains a hundred worth of marks, and instructions.
The instructions say to travel to the royal court. To get a job as a servant in the palace kitchens. To administer his product to the king and four others, whose names Virgil only vaguely recognizes. They must be important, though, for this much money.
He doesn’t usually travel, and this job seems dangerous... Clearly, more factors are at play here than a hired killer is permitted to know. But the letter promises four hundred more when the murder is done, and, well, that’s a lot of money. Virgil would be set for life. And who knows the consequences if he declines?
He starts a mental packing list, and is on the road to the court within the week.
(end)
idk yet what happens next—my current idea is that Remus is also hired to kill the same people, and only the person who completes the job gets paid for it. That’s not great though… I kinda feel like one of them (probably Virgil) would just give up on the job if there was competition. It’d be pretty easy to contrive a reason for them to Not Do That—maybe if they don’t complete the job, they get killed? Virgil’s mysterious employer is already planning to kill him when the job is done, though—can’t have anyone knowing that you were (indirectly) the one to kill the previous king. Virgil isn’t fully aware of his employer’s plans, but he suspects. Virgil suspects everything. Paranoia keeps him alive.
WAIT ACTUALLY IDEA (you are watching me brainstorm this au in real time)(ooh, how would a brainstorm work in the Mindscape? anyways)
I stopped typing for a sec and my brain wandered over to thinking about where the other sides could come into this au. (bear with me. also, this idea isn’t necessarily better than the last one. you have been warned.)
So. Virgil’s employer (who I will call M. Evil or probably Mevil from now on) is probably killing the four people who are ahead of them for the throne, right?
And Roman is a prince, right?
So: Remus is Roman’s brother… c!Thomas is their dad… Logan and Janus are also ahead of Mevil for the throne (maybe one or both of them is engaged to Roman)… See where I’m going with this? (Maybe? Yes? No?)
(and Patton is the royal baker, Virgil’s boss while he works at the palace. Nobody is trying to kill him, but he might be accidentally endangered anyways)
okay, so Remus is the black sheep of the family, as he is wont to be in basically every AU I write. Being the Duke is sort of his side hobby? (Legally, he is a duke. Being a serial killer is the side hobby) He travels a lot, which is fairly normal for nobility. And wherever he goes, bloodshed follows.
There are theories among the kingdom that the Duke is following Remus, disturbingly obsessed with him. No one suspects that Remus might be the Duke, because Remus is a public figure and is ostensibly under too much scrutiny to get away with literal murder. Interestingly enough, it’s usually the crown’s political opponents who are murdered? Who knows why that could be.
Somehow (brainstorm first, details later) Remus hears of a plot to murder himself, his twin, his father, and a few of his favourite court members. He travels back to the court to protect them, because who can defend from an assassin better than an assassin? He immediately clocks Virgil as the would-be-killer, they mutually attempt to kill each other a few times, then they fall in gay love and kill Mevil. The end.
hmm. not the best, but probably better than my first idea.
thoughts?

I fucking L O V E both ideas S O fucking much oml P L E A S E!!! I absolutely adore the cleverness of their assassin names and Ree being the most creatively gruesome towards his targets is so badass and fitting!!! Character!Thomas being the Creativitwins' dads is such an underrated concept that I L O V E and I am L O O K I N G at that Roloceit implication 👀👀👀👀👀👀 I seriously find the concept that no one suspects Ree to be a known assassin because of his title and that he'd "easily be caught" is D E L I C I O U S like he's just doing his royal duties nothing to see here he's definitely not causing murders or anything XD Also I L O V E that the beloveds are out for each other at first because Ree needs to protect himself and his people but they end up in love and killing Vee's employer instead that's just beautiful <3

The Adventure Begins
Six adventurers, fates intertwined beyond belief, are in the same town. Only two of them have met, having known each other since birth. Other than that, these wanderers have no idea of the existence of the others. Yet, they must meet. They will meet. For they are important to how the kingdom of Schelendor changes, whether it be for the better or the worse, only their choices will tell.
Their journey to the city of Haolewyn is something personal to each of them, Virgil; an urchin who learned to survive on the streets is searching for a dear friend who kept him alive, Roman and Remus; two brothers who ran from their village after an incident that the former refuses to speak about while the latter making a pact with a deity to get revenge, Janus; a criminal who lives in a city further west travelling to see what he can exploit from the nobles there who have something to hide, Patton; on a journey to try to bring peace between the nobles who are on the verge of a war over whose town Haolewyn’s is, and Logan; he is researching magic and how it works to connect to his research on how sorcerer’s magic works. None of them realize just how important they are, but they soon will.
However, they are currently in separate parts of the city, most of them attempting to find the information they need and find a place to rest before nightfall. Remus and Roman however, are currently at the tavern that employed Remus.
Remus’s job was to make and mix the drinks, he also helped out at the distillery a few miles away when needed. Roman entertained the guests at the tavern most nights, although one could find him almost anywhere in the city. As usual, Roman’s performance was astounding the crowd, giving them all something to stare at. Only one heckler could be heard above the noise, only one who had the right to make fun of him.
“Your voice could use a drink or two!” His brother cackled. Rolling his eyes, Roman launched into his story of the night. Another tale of heroes defeating dragons terrorizing crowds, when the doors slammed open. Eyes tore from Roman momentarily to stare and glare at the newcomer who had interrupted the story.
The newcomer of course was Logan, of course. He hadn’t meant to slam open the doors, however that did not stop the patrons of the bar from judging this newcomer with suspicions high, Logan suspecting it due to his orcish heritage, that is until he noticed that the performer was a tiefling. Perhaps this section of the town was different, which was a thought that brought a certain comfort to him. Roman was entranced, as most travellers avoid this bar. Especially those who have something to study, yet he was very aware of the glares heading this individual’s way and gave him a wink before turning to continue the story. Logan was utterly confused as to what the wink meant, but went over to the bar area to find where to request a room for the night. As this had been the cheapest place available, and Logan had not acquired nearly as much funding as his peers, a cheaper place would allow him to save his gold for something of more importance. Still Logan couldn't help but be entranced by the story the tiefling who had winked at him was telling. It was of a grand adventure to slay a dragon in the town of Aqin. It made no logical sense, and usually Logan is one to scoff at stories like that. But for some reason he couldn't this time and he did not understand why. However, unknown to him as it was, it wasn't because of something completely intangible. As long as one believes in fate that is. The reason Logan was so entranced was because of his intertwined destiny with the bard on stage. Remus on the other hand was having the time of his life looking at the wizard who had joined the tavern, especially the books he was reading.
“You a fan of magic?”
Logan looked up, surprised that someone was willingly talking to him as he was almost always avoided.
“Ah… yes! I am currently doing some sanctioned research.”
“Oooh how fancy! Why'd you want the government involved?”
“If I am to be completely honest, I would lack the funding required to conduct this research on my own. Other than the necessary expenditures it is of my professional opinion that I am capable of coordinating the required research independently.”
“Interesting, whatcha wanna learn about magic for? Becoming a wizard? Trying to curse someone as a one off thing?” Remus leaned towards Logan, watching as the taller halforc’s eyes widened a bit.
“Ah, I’m already a wizard. Apologies, I am not in my official robes currently. It was of my opinion that I’d be more agreeable in common clothes.” Logan startled, intrigued at the way the bartender cackled a bit.
“You and my brother would get along well then! Both of you people pleasers to the core!”
“Might I inquire as to who your brother may be?”
“Roman is currently performing! He’s the storyteller! I’m Remus! What d’you go by?”
“My moniker is Logan.”
The two kept chatting for a bit, Logan ecstatic to talk about the research he’d been looking into and completely forgetting about asking for a room. That is until someone else came in.
Janus entered the tavern, having travelled all day to get to Haolewyn. While he was anxious to get started on the blackmail case, he’d mess up horribly if he didn’t get a proper night’s rest.
“Bartender,” he said, addressing Remus who was preoccupied with talking to Logan. “May I ask where I can get a room?”
Logan startled a bit at the sudden voice, turning to look over to where Janus had just entered.
“Yep! What’s your room for? Got someone else coming too?” The eyebrow wiggle confused Logan, as he knew it was meant to mean something yet the connotation of it eluded him. He watched as the newcomer sighed, clearly exasperated at the question.
“If you must know, I require a place to rest. Nothing exciting I’m afraid.”
“Aww. Maybe next time! Here’s your key, we do clean the rooms after each patron leaves, but we do not take any responsibility for any leftover mess! It’s 2 silver a day to stay here!”
“Apologies to interrupt, however this has reminded me that a room would be necessary for me as well.”
“Here’s your key too!” Remus sang, tossing both of them keys. Cackling when the newcomer didn’t seem to catch it.
Just a moment later, Roman’s story ended. And with roaring applause, he made his way over to his brother. Passing a tip jar around for those in the tavern to give him some extra copper (and if he was lucky silver) for such a stunning performance. Watching him talking not only with the halforc from earlier, but the yuan-ti as well, he elected to introduce himself.
“Greetings weary travellers, I am Roman. The main entertainer for this wonderful establishment! I see you’ve met my brother Remus already.”
“Salutations I am Logan. And indeed, it has been delightful conversing with your brother.”
As all three of them turned to look at the fourth companion, it became certainly clear that something about the conversation made them uncomfortable. All of them going through what might have offended the humanoid still unknown to them. Unbeknownst to them, it was just the subject of dropping his name that made him uncomfortable.
Eventually the silence became unbearable for the fourth, and he introduced himself.
“You may call me Deceit.” His voice as smooth as possible, Janus watched the other three process what he had said. If they were smart, they wouldn’t say anything about it.
Turns out, the one named Roman seemed to have a deathwish.
“Oh, so you’re too special to just give out your name? What are you, a government officer?”
“Oooh, are you the officer funding Logan’s research,” Remus chimed in and Janus couldn’t help but slightly wish the assassin he knew was nearby. Sadly they weren’t as this assassin avoids this city for some unknown reason. Which is a very fortunate thing in this case, as if Janus were to have them murdered he would be interrupting fate, and fate is not a thing to be messed with.
Rubbing his temples attempting to avoid his oncoming headache, Janus sighed. “I’m not a government agent—”
“Something a government agent would say.” Roman interrupted quickly.
“I am just not fond of handing my name out to strangers.”
“Like a government agent!” Remus cackled, both twins high fiving each other as Janus looked like he wanted nothing more than to murder someone.
“If it is any consolation Deceit, I highly doubt you have the capability to be in such an esteemed position.”
For some reason, that annoyed Janus even more. Especially since it got Remus cackling even more and Roman snickering at him.
“Ooh yeah, he’s too short!”
“Remus, you can’t be mean to humanoids smaller than you! That’s mean.”
“I was not aware that there was a height requirement to be a government agent.”
However, before Janus could be humiliated even more, the tavern doors opened again. And a rather small, Shadar-kai elf walked in, a glare etched into his face.
The tavern’s mood seemed to sour a bit when they saw Virgil, but he didn’t care. He had enough to not sleep on the streets here, and so he wouldn’t. And why should he be nice when as far as he was aware his friend had disappeared from this city without a trace. What good could come from a city like this. Although where he was from wasn’t any better, at least he had others that he could rely on there.
“Why the long face my friend?” Roman asked, attempting to figure out what was going on with this newcomer who looked a few missteps away from murder.
“I’m looking for a room, not an interrogation,” the elf growled at the tiefling.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t realize that wanting guests to be happy and content qualified as an interrogation!” Roman sneered back, not enjoying the mood the other brought with him.
“And making fun of me for not divulging my name counts as keeping your patrons happy?”
Roman wrinkled his nose at that, clearly upset that he was getting told off by two different humanoids that he had just met. Thankfully for both Virgil and Janus he did back off, however he did continue to glare at them for a bit. Remus looked between both Deceit and the newcomer, before opening his mouth.
“Apologies but we’re out of rooms for the night. You’re new friendo here just got the last one, you can share if you want!”
“Why in Phythmia would I share with him!” Janus hissed out, feeling completely out of his depth when it came to the tavern owner and his brother.
“I need a room,” Virgil growled, narrowing his eyes at the other, “and I personally don’t care how I get it.”
“What do you mean by th—”
Virgil stormed off, fists tight, and Janus was left stunned as to what had happened with the shadar kai. What none of the four who were left there seemed to notice was that one key thing was missing. At least for a few minutes anyways, as when Janus went to look at his hand, he noticed the disappearance of an important item if he were truly to stay the night; the words of the elf ringing in his ears.
“Something wrong Deceit?” Remus asked, curious as to what had soured the yuan-ti’s already lemony expression.
“That elf stole my key,” he growled in response to the bartender, about to go off on a rant before Remus interrupted him.
“Oooh yeah, that’s gotta suck. Too bad you already paid for the room. We don’t do refunds here!”
“Oh of course not, why would you! Is there anything I could do to get a room at this point?”
“Nope!”
“Of course not.” Janus sighed, scanning the room for any sign of the thief right before someone more interesting caught his eye.
A cleric had just entered the tavern, one that was well dressed too. Patton, was his name, not that Janus knew. His autumn nature was kind and alluring despite how uncomfortable he seemed to be in this environment. Clearly he was knew to this scene, considering his dress and his expression. Nervous as he was, Patton strolled over to the bartender anyways.
“Hi I’m Patton. Do you know of anyone with the name of Gallan?”

I Want To Kiss- Kill... I Want To Kill You
Summary: Janus is a cold hearted assassin. No attachments, no emotion. Only guns and targets. Until one beautiful stranger messss it all up. Or - Janus gets gay-panic on a plane and can't seem to shake it off.
Pairing: pre-romantic Roceit
Warnings: guns, mentions of killing and death, assassins, kissing, making out, sorta enemies to lovers I guess. Let me know if I missed any.
Word count: 2,216
For @roceit2023 day 2 - assassin
----------------------------------------------------------
Don't get attached.
That's the first rule for being an assassin.
At least, that's the first rule Janus' father taught him. When Janus asked why that was the first rule, he told him that a few months after he was born, he was ordered to kill Janus' mom. They were short of money so his dad couldn't afford to turn down a job. He lost his edge after that mission, never being able to kill again.
Which is why Janus was tasked with keeping their family's reputation.
And keeping it he did.
Janus was a master at not getting attached, not letting his missions and his growing number of body count affect him in any way. Emotion had no part to play in his lifestyle.
Suffice to say, Janus was one of the top assassins in the business. With his cold and calculating demeanor and his sharp shooting, there wasn't a target beyond his abilities.
Until one flight changed it all.
----------------------------------------------------------
He got on a flight to his next target's location. Janus was pleased to find no one else sitting in his row when he got on. No screaming children or strangers falling asleep on his shoulder this time.
He put on his headphones and relaxed back into his chair, humming along to the music. Then, someone decided to tap his shoulder.
Reluctantly, he took off his headphones and turned to look at the stranger. He gulped a little when he met eyes with the cutest guy he ever laid eyes on.
He had short, brown hair with bangs that fell neatly on his forehead, drawing attention to his green eyes with a touch of blue in them. He was smiling at Janus, showing perfect, white teeth and unnaturally soft lips.
"Hey there! My seat is on this row too, do you mind letting me pass through to the window seat?" Asked the pretty stranger.
Don't get attached.
Echoed in his mind as all Janus could do was nod and get up to let him pass. He was about to put his headphones back, desperately trying to keep his cheeks from burning bright red, when the stranger decided to engage in small talk.
"So why are you going to London?" The stranger asked, still smiling.
"Why, to meet the queen of course." Janus snarked in response.
The stranger snorted, the sound making Janus smile a little as well. "Are you now? Am I required to bow to you?"
Janus raised an eyebrow, "I wouldn't be opposed." The stranger laughed.
"I'm Roman." Roman said, stretching out his hand in greeting.
Don't get attached
Echoed faintly in his mind as he shook Roman's hand. "I'm Janus." He introduced himself, "what is your business in London?"
Roman shrugged, "just personal stuff I need to take care of." He said dismissively.
…too dismissively.
The kind of dismissive tone Janus himself used at times when he bumped into nosey strangers during his missions. It was an effective way to help you seem both uninteresting and interesting enough that makes the stranger's curiosity sated enough to leave you alone.
Janus met Roman's eyes and they both shared a flash of understanding.
Well, that was an interesting development. It's not often that you meet other assassins in this business, but Janus supposes it's not impossible.
Janus smirked, "I see, good luck with your personal stuff, then."
Roman smiled, "thank you, I do hope luck is on my side for this one."
Then, a thought struck Janus. "You don't think your personal stuff is similar to mine, do you?"
Roman shrugged again, "I don't think so, my situation is pretty unique, crazy family stuff I really don't feel like getting into right now."
Janus relaxed a little, "oh, good."
"I'm in position." He said into his earpiece.
He was lying on his belly on a building's rooftop, his sniper rifle positioned directly at the edge. It was the latest model, his dad got it for him after his last mission, a brand new M40A5. He was waiting to test this baby out.
"Good, our info says the target should enter the building any second now, it can't make it through the door." His dad replied in his ear.
"I know, dad." Janus rolled his eyes.
"Be careful, Jan, this target is known to be tricky-"
"I got it, dad, this isn't my first rodeo." Janus cut him off with a huff. "I got this."
He heard his father sigh, "knock 'em dead, son."
Janus smirked, "I always do."
After a few minutes, he spotted a figure walking towards the building in front of him.
"Target sighted." Janus said into his earpiece, adjusting his position and aiming his rifle, squinting his eye to look through the crosshairs of it, directing the + directly to the target's head. "Taking aim."
He took a steadying breath and held it in to keep his chest from rising and falling. His trigger finger started slowly putting pressure on the trigger when-
Footsteps coming up to the roof.
They were faint, any normal person wouldn't have heard them. But Janus' instincts were sharp.
He had to act quickly.
He repositioned, aiming to shoot the target before dealing with whoever's coming, but before he can pull the trigger, a warning shot went just past his left ear.
He cursed, he wasn't quick enough.
"Jan? What was that? Is everything okay?"
"I've got company, I'll call you back." He tapped his earpiece to hung up the conversation before his dad can protest.
He stood up, taking out his hand-gun from the hidden holster underneath his clothes, and shot at where he estimated his little guest was from the warning shot earlier.
"Come out, come out wherever you are." Janus tried teasing them out of hiding. Holding his gun in front of him, he walked towards the entrance to the roof, senses on high alert and heart beating in his chest. "These are your final moments anyway, don't go out like a coward."
He heard a faint laugh at that and aimed his gun towards the sound.
"You're the one to talk." A figure holding a gun emerged from the shadows and into the faint moonlight.
Janus recognized that voice.
"Roman?" Now that he can see his opponent's face, it was clear. Roman made him fail the mission, and he was going to try and kill him.
"Hello, Janus." He spat the name like it was a curse, all the pleasantness gone from his voice.
"You did have the same target as me, I knew it." Janus accused Roman.
Roman laughed again, "not quite, The Slither, my target… is you." He said, using Janus' assassin nickname that he took from his father. "Or rather, not you personally but we were informed about an assassination attempt on my brother so of course, he asked me to help him."
"Aww the target's hiding behind his dear brother, how cute. How very noble of you to help him, even though it's entirely his fault for getting mixed up with the wrong people." Janus said, stepping cautiously closer to Roman, "this has nothing to do with you and I have a reputation to keep so how about we-"
He was cut off by another warning shot, narrowly missing his shoulder. "You talk too much."
"You love it." Janus teased, ignoring his racing heart that had nothing to do with the dangerous situation, he was no stranger to those. But Roman was still so goddamn beautiful, so unfair.
Don't get attached
"Oh, so your ego is as big as they say." Roman said, a light smirk tagging on his lips and damn that smirk sent Janus' brain to a spiral.
What was with him today? He's been attracted to random men before but never like this! He knows better than that… doesn't he?
"Do you always clean up after your brother's mess?" Janus ignored Roman's comment. Neither of them tried shooting the other yet. They both had their guns pointed and were waiting for an opening.
The question seemed to have struck a nerve as Roman's shoulders slacked ever so slightly, gun still pointed directly at Janus. "What do you know? You're from a family of killers. I kill to protect my only family, you do it for money and reputation." Roman said, obviously avoiding answering Janus' question.
"Is your brother the only reason you became an assassin?" Janus asked with a raised eyebrow, "did he rope you into his mess? Doesn't seem like he deserves your protection to me."
"Good thing I didn't ask for your opinion then." Roman growled.
It then occurred to Janus, even if he gets his opening to shoot Roman… he's not sure he would.
He sighed. "Look, my window closed, I failed the mission, I'm not going to get anything from killing your brother anymore, there's no reason for you to kill me, you did your job." Janus said truthfully.
Roman barked a laugh, "sorry, I don't trust Slithers."
Then, Janus did the stupidest thing he had ever done in his life, he let his guard down… literally. He lowered his gun and dropped it on the ground, kicking it towards Roman. "Kill me then." He challenged.
"W-what? What the hell are you doing?!" Roman yelled in surprise.
"Um… surrendering? Wasn't that obvious?" Janus said, sitting down on the roof.
Roman squinted his eyes at him, "do you have another hidden gun or something?"
He laid down on his back on the cold roof, putting his hands under his head, "nope."
"What game are you playing here?" Roman asked, desperately trying to figure out what was happening.
"No games, Pretty Boy, you can kill me… if you want to." Janus said, looking up at Roman and winking at him.
It was hard to tell with just the moonlight being the only light source, but Janus thought he saw Roman's cheeks flush a little. "I… Of course I want to! I have to, that's the only reason I'm here!" Roman said, although it sounded more like he was talking to himself rather than Janus.
Janus shrugged, "then do it, nothing's stopping you."
Roman took a deep breath and aimed his gun again. Janus braced himself as he heard him click the safety off… but nothing happened.
"Ugh what's wrong with me today?! I've done this enough times! It shouldn't be so hard!" Roman groaned, lowering his gun and sitting down next to Janus.
Janus let out a sigh, "you and me both, pretty boy."
"Would you stop calling me that? You should be long dead, you know. You're lucky you're so…" he trailed off, looking away from him.
Janus smirked, "so… what? So charming? So handsome? So funny? So smart?"
"Annoying, is what I was going to say." Roman said, though he didn't sound much annoyed.
Janus snickered, "right, of course."
There was a long moment of silence before Roman spoke up.
"Sometimes… sometimes I wonder how I got here." He said, sounding tired. He then laughed softly, "I thought I was going to be an actor."
"So what happened?" Janus asked curiously.
"My parents died… and Remus needed me. He had his own ways of coping… not legal ones but he wouldn't listen to me. One thing led to another and… here we are." Roman said, sounding sad and regretful.
"That's why being an only child rules." Janus said, attempting to lighten the mood.
Roman snorted despite himself, "are you incapable of being serious?"
Janus shrugged, "no, I'm just uncomfortable with it so I use sarcasm to deflect, made you laugh though."
Roman laughed, "can't argue with that."
Another moment of silence in which Roman switched from sitting next to Janus, to lying next to him, mimicking his position. They both stared at the dark blue sky for a while.
"What are we going to do now?" Roman asked softly as if trying to maintain the peaceful moment.
Janus rolled to his side to face Roman and he did the same.
"I guess… we go on with our lives… right?"
Their eyes met, Roman's eyes glittering in the moonlight, making him look even more unreasonably beautiful.
Don't. Get. Attached.
The voice in his head insisted. But, for the first time in his life, Janus ignored it.
He leaned in closer, testing. When Roman didn't pull away, he took his hand and used it to tag him closer until their lips met in a hesitant kiss that grew more bold as neither of them pulled away.
They broke to catch their breaths.
"This… this is crazy, right? I mean… just minutes ago we were trying to kill each other! You're only here because you were going to kill my brother!" Roman said, trying to process how fast they were moving.
"Romantic, isn't it?" Janus teased and Roman snorted again. Janus was starting to get addicted to the sound. "You've liked me since our flight, haven't you, Romeo?"
Roman was definitely blushing now. "...no."
"Liar." Janus smirked, pressing their lips together again in a quick peck.
But, before he could pull away, Roman cupped the back of his head and pulled him closer to a hungry kiss that never seemed to end.
Soon, they'll be forced to figure out how they'll move on from here. But, for now, they get to enjoy each other's company.

see, I have soured from remadora and now ship wolfstar - because honestly remadora is a difficult ship to write and execute, and remus lupin is one of those characters which I have an exclusive ship for (and I am a sucker for friends to lovers). but - and I think this is really important - I still (1) respect remadora shippers because that’s called ‘treating other humans with basic dignity’, and I shouldn’t have to say this, but the animosity between wolfstar and remadora shippers is really out of hand, ffs they are fictional ships and (2) I respect and like tonks, as a character, so I cannot deal when people villianise her.
anyway.

Flirting With Danger
Part 3 of my Assassin James series, coming this weekend.
Enjoy this snippet until then...
James was lying on the couch with his arm thrown over his eyes when his work phone went off again on Monday night. He groaned before he watched it go to voicemail. He was not in the mood to deal with anybody at the moment. They called another two times before James got fed up. "What the fuck do you want?" James growled into the receiver. "I'm giving you one more chance to accept the job," Dumbledore replied calmly. "No." "Then I hope you can deal with the consequences." Dumbledore hung up, and James was confused.
