Did you know that Jiang Qilin was a singer? He was a member of 青鸟飞鱼, and their song 此生不换 from the 仙剑三 OST has been used in tons of fan edits on bilibili.

i didn't until recently when my douyin account is flooded with videos about this show and jiang qilin. such a good song, and he's so multi talented!!!

i also discovered that he's in that new pan yueming crime drama/黑夜告白, and i'm so excited!

because sometimes there are invisible tests and invisible rules and you're just supposed to ... know the rule. someone you thought of as a friend asks you for book recommendations, so you give her a list of like 30 books, each with a brief blurb and why you like it. later, you find out she screenshotted the list and send it out to a group chat with the note: what an absolute freak can you believe this. you saw the responses: emojis where people are rolling over laughing. too much and obsessive and actually kind of creepy in the comments. you thought you'd been doing the right thing. she'd asked, right? an invisible rule: this is what happens when you get too excited.

you aren't supposed to laugh at your own jokes, so you don't, but then you're too serious. you're not supposed to be too loud, but then people say you're too quiet. you aren't supposed to get passionate about things, but then you're shy, boring. you aren't supposed to talk too much, but then people are mad when you're not good at replying.

you fold yourself into a prettier paper crane. since you never know what is "selfish" and what is "charity," you give yourself over, fully. you'd rather be empty and over-generous - you'd rather eat your own boundaries than have even one person believe that you're mean. since you don't know what the thing is that will make them hate you, you simply scrub yourself clean of any form of roughness. if you are perfect and smiling and funny, they can love you. if you are always there for them and never admit what's happening and never mention your past and never make them uncomfortable - you can make up for it. you can earn it.

don't fuck up. they're all testing you, always. they're tolerating you. whatever secret club happened, over a summer somewhere - during some activity you didn't get to attend - everyone else just... figured it out. like they got some kind of award or examination that allowed them to know how-to-be-normal. how to fit. and for the rest of your life, you've been playing catch-up. you've been trying to prove that - haha! you get it! that the joke they're telling, the people they are, the manual they got- yeah, you've totally read it.

if you can just divide yourself in two - the lovable one, and the one that is you - you can do this. you can walk the line. they can laugh and accept you. if you are always-balanced, never burdensome, a delight to have in class, champagne and glittering and never gawky or florescent or god-forbid cringe: you can get away with it.

you stare at your therapist, whom you can make jokes with, and who laughs at your jokes, because you are so fucking good at people-pleasing. you smile at her, and she asks you how you're doing, and you automatically say i'm good, thanks, how are you? while the answer swims somewhere in your little lizard brain:

how long have you been doing this now? mastering the art of your body and mind like you're piloting a puppet. has it worked? what do you mean that all you feel is... just exhausted. pick yourself up, the tightrope has no net. after all, you're cheating, somehow, but nobody seems to know you actually flunked the test. it's working!

I just wanna say bc I KNOW you're somewhere on tumblr, to the teenage girl who attended Take Your Kid To Work Day at an office building in Ontario, Canada circa 2013 and had a conversation with a middle aged woman in which you showed her your Black Veil Brides fanart and fanfics and ship content and told her about different fanfic tropes including a/b/o verse bc she happened to know who Panic! at The Disco and Fallout Boy were and thus you felt the need to show her your bandblr ship art, that was my fucking mother and I had to clarify all that to her including looking my mother in the eye and trying to explain a/b/o verse without sounding like a lunatic.

It's been 10 years and I still regularly sent evil energies in your direction. Since you'd be probably two years younger than me and thus legally an adult now, please know if this post reaches you it's on sight.

still one of my favorite bits i ever got to commit was pretending not to know who jesus is when a street preacher was evangelizing to me. he was like "do you know who jesus is?" and i had so much time before my next bus and i wanted to know what would happen so i said no. and you know what. he had clearly never been told no to that question before because if i hadn't actually known who jesus was, his baffled and fumbling attempt sure wouldn't have told me. literally reversed the roles. now you get to stand here feeling very uncomfortable and wishing you could be somewhere else because guess what buddy, this is my bus stop, im early (and can catch like five other buses from this exact stop), and im now thoroughly invested in hearing about this mysterious jesus figure. you're locked in here with me. im eating the key as we speak. i will kill us both before i let you out of here.

I was also wondering—do you have any cdrama recommendations for folks who enjoyed Three Body? I loved the style and suspense of Three Body, and I loved how it trusted its audience and didn’t feel the need to over-explain itself. I usually watch romance and period dramas, but I’m looking to branch out. Thank you so much!

aww, thanks! i'm glad you like my blog and three body <3. LOL and i'm glad you think i'm nice. I always feel guilty whenever i rant about the lack of interest/interaction on here from time to time xD...i kinda feel that most of you are already fed up with me because of that...

it's hard to exactly find any match to three body because it's so special. but since it's realistic sci-fi with suspense, i think you are looking for realistic style suspense/crime cdramas? honestly, that's usually what i watch, so i can only recommend from this type of dramas. most of the shows below have reputable and famous dilfs and nice bromance in them lol:

day and night/白夜追凶 (2017), the one crime drama that dragged me back to watching cdramas in 2017.

the long night/沉默的真相 (2020), one of the best crime dramas in 2020s. bai yu who's pretty popular on tumblr is in it, and i was surprised by how unpopular this show was on tumblr. disclaimer: i'm not a bai yu fan (i don't dislike him either) just because i mentioned him lol, i'm just trying to "bait" you to watch the show using his tumblr fame. i don't know him enough to rec his shows to you, sorry!

the bad kids/隐秘的角落 (2020)

the long season/漫长的季节 (2023) - the best cdrama in 2023. yes, i'd rank this before three body even though i personally love three body more, but the quality of this show is undenaible.

thirteen years of dust/尘封十三载 (2023)

the knockout/狂飙 (2023) - one of the most popular shows in china in 2023. too bad that it's not getting popular on tumblr at all. i kinda only like the first 2/3 of the show.

escape from trilateral slopes/边水往事 (2024) - one of the better crime shows this year. similar to the knockout, i prefer the first 2/3 of the show.

winter begonia/鬓边不是海棠红 (2020) - not a crime show. it's a beijing opera centric danmei adaptation. in fact, the only danmei adaptation that i watched and didn't regret watching lol. i was quite pleasantly surprised when i noticed that a lot of three body fans were fans of this show as well on tumblr.

(i don't think douban rating is that important, but except for the 2024 drama which has a 7.9 rating, all the dramas on the list along with three body have a 8.0 or higher rating on douban)

So Venus is my favorite planet in the solar system - everything about it is just so weird.

It has this extraordinarily dense atmosphere that by all accounts shouldn't exist - Venus is close enough to the sun (and therefore hot enough) that the atmosphere should have literally evaporated away, just like Mercury's. We think Earth manages to keep its atmosphere by virtue of our magnetic field, but Venus doesn't even have that going for it. While Venus is probably volcanically active, it definitely doesn't have an internal magnetic dynamo, so whatever form of volcanism it has going on is very different from ours. And, it spins backwards! For some reason!!

But, for as many mysteries as Venus has, the United States really hasn't spent much time investigating it. The Soviet Union, on the other hand, sent no less than 16 probes to Venus between 1961 and 1984 as part of the Venera program - most of them looked like this!

The Soviet Union had a very different approach to space than the United States. NASA missions are typically extremely risk averse, and the spacecraft we launch are generally very expensive one-offs that have only one chance to succeed or fail.

It's lead to some really amazing science, but to put it into perspective, the Mars Opportunity rover only had to survive on Mars for 90 days for the mission to be declared a complete success. That thing lasted 15 years. I love the Opportunity rover as much as any self-respecting NASA engineer, but how much extra time and money did we spend that we didn't technically "need" to for it to last 60x longer than required?

Anyway, all to say, the Soviet Union took a more incremental approach, where failures were far less devastating. The Venera 9 through 14 probes were designed to land on the surface of Venus, and survive long enough to take a picture with two cameras - not an easy task, but a fairly straightforward goal compared to NASA standards. They had…mixed results.

Venera 9 managed to take a picture with one camera, but the other one's lens cap didn't deploy.

Venera 10 also managed to take a picture with one camera, but again the other lens cap didn't deploy.

Venera 11 took no pictures - neither lens cap deployed this time.

Venera 12 also took no pictures - because again, neither lens cap deployed.

Lotta problems with lens caps.

For Venera 13 and 14, in addition to the cameras they sent a device to sample the Venusian "soil". Upon landing, the arm was supposed to swing down and analyze the surface it touched - it was a simple mechanism that couldn't be re-deployed or adjusted after the first go.

This time, both lens caps FINALLY ejected perfectly, and we were treated to these marvelous, eerie pictures of the Venus landscape:

However, when the Venera 14 soil sampler arm deployed, instead of sampling the Venus surface, it managed to swing down and land perfectly on….an ejected lens cap.
