Why is Ethan making this face?

This ask had me thinking of how in the world could I answer this!

Then I saw @creativepromptsforwriting blind date prompts and it clicked. I took liberty with prompt #10 and I came up with this little story.

Can anyone say Fake Dating Trope?!?!?!?! (At least to start)

Summary: At the end of her rope, Tessa has something to ask Ethan. Can she get him to agree to this idea of hers?

“Ethan, I don’t know what else to do, I really can’t do another!” Tessa pleads, giving Ethan her best puppy dog eyes and pouting lips. “We don’t have to actually do it.”

Tessa shakes her head at how that must have sounded. “That’s—that’s not what, you know never mind about that. I can’t be set up again.”

Ethan contorts his face giving her the oddest side smirk as if he can’t think of anything that could be worse than agreeing to go on a date with his colleague but it was more than that, he was just waiting for Tessa to realize that. If word got out that they were going on a date, even a fake one whether or not they actually had to do it as she put would open a can of worms, a meeting with HR and so on.

That sounded like a headache.

“Give me more credit than that Tess. I know you meant going on the date with you.” Ethan’s mind wasn’t always wondering to those thoughts, the ones he’d keep buried deep inside until the day he died. “You must be really desperate if you’re asking me.”

Tessa hopes deflated at the tone of his voice and actually having to tell him that it was more than a date she was asking him for. She had to take baby steps before she gave him the whole plan she concocted the other night when her friends told her of the amazing guys that she should meet. 

It was like each one of them had someone waiting in the wings. Tessa knew her friends meant well, with setting her up on blind dates but every single one turned into a disaster. 

She was done with the dating scene, that was something she couldn’t tell her friends because she could already hear them, Sienna more then the rest of them, telling her that she just hasn’t found the right guy. 

Oh boy, Tessa had found the right guy but the guy couldn’t come to terms with someone actually caring for him. The man who showed her his feelings, the man she knew cared for others but was scared of being burned again by letting those feelings out.

So this whole dating not dating idea that came to her like a light bulb in the middle of the night was going be hard to explain but maybe not has hard with what she was trying to ease Ethan into agreeing. 

From where she stood it would be a hard no. The look on his face mere moments ago told her that much.

“Are you going to tell me what is running through that mind of yours.” There was this irritation that crept out of Ethan, it didn’t help that he was playing with his car keys as if he hurrying Tessa up with whatever she wanted to talk to him about. “I’m not a mind reader.” Ethan winced at the last sentence that left his lips.

An anger began to build within Tessa, frustrated with herself at thinking this was going to work and angry at Ethan for making her feel bad and not even being able to ask. “Forget it. It wasn’t going to work anyways.”

She turned her back to him muttering under her breath “I should’ve just asked Bryce.” As she took her first step back towards the hospital, Tessa felt a firm grip wrap around her arm, stopping her in her place.

“Don’t. Tell me.”

Three words.

That’s all Ethan said. He had an idea what Tessa wanted to ask him but he wanted to hear it straight from her.

“I’m done with the dating scene. I can’t possibly take another blind date, it’s exhausting and.. and— I was thinking that maybe you could help me. Like I said we don’t have to go on a date or anything, just make my friends think that we did and possibly have more dates down the line.” Tessa says releasing a deep breath.

There is a silence in the parking structure, Tessa waiting for Ethan to say something, to calm the rapid beating of her heart. To put her out of her misery and tell her that it’s a bad idea.

“What else?” Ethan asks, loosening his grip on Tessa and turning her around to face him. “Because if it’s just a date or two, your group of friends will go back setting you up and then we’ll become hot gossip of what went wrong and that is something that sounds a lot like a headache I don’t need.”

Tessa thinks for a minute, taking her bottom lip between her teeth. “You’re right it is a headache and will be one…” Ethan jaw clenched before Tessa could finish. “I was going to try and convince you to play along that we were in fact dating.” 

“And now you want to go ask Bryce to fake date you.”

Crossing her arms over her chest, Tessa blows away the strand of hair away from her face. “Well yeah. You clearly don’t want to and it was a stupid idea to begin with.”

With an eyebrow arched at Tessa, Ethan tells her “Where did you hear me say no?”

Something I find amazing about Dungeon Meshi is how much "restraint" Ryoko Kui shows when telling this story. It's so clearly crafted to be the best story it can be.

By that I mean how she had SO MUCH world building for this story but still kept it as contained as it needed to be, it's a story about a few characters inside one dungeon, even if the world is expansive the story isn't. And even with the amount of characters she clearly loves so much she never got side tracked as I see so many other mangas get. The world is alive, other people exist fully with their own lives, but it stays true to the story that's being told in this universe.

I think it really shines through with how the world building relevant to the story is slowly shown to us in a non expository way, that's also something I see a lot, especially in movies, just stopping everything on it's tracks so they can info dump about the world to you, but in dungeon meshi its all so organic... magic is explained because some characters are ignorant, cultural differences are shown through cultural clashes, world history is implied through relevant conversation (monster facts are info-dumped to us but even that is in character) it's all really good and I don't think I could have gotten this into it if everything was just laid out in front of me right away.

This is all to say I'm glad we have the adventurer's bible and all this extra content that didn't fit into the story but I'm glad they weren't forced into it in detriment to the storytelling.

(the jason one is in reference to the fanon headcanon/au that Jason and Damian potentially knew each other and interacted while jason was in the league. I've thought about it before in context of this au, but haven't thought about it enough to feel inspired or motivated to make a post exploring the idea)

(diablito means, as you can guess, 'little devil'. while i'm neutral to latino jason, i think the nickname is cute as fuck and was danny's main nickname from Jason. i don't wanna touch that timeline so im not gonna decide how old they were when Jason was there.)

anyways that was the day that Skulker cemented himself as Danny's no.1 opp, and still remains there to this day even if he and Vlad are both viciously fighting for second. Out of everyone in the the AP rogues gallery, Skulker will be the first to be thrown under the bus in terms of 'o shit here comes phantom fucking RUN'.

Poor bug!Dewi just being so scared and confused. Hollownest is probably a lot scarier up close. Even as a human he already got a bad scare from thk and the radiance and now he is much more vulnerable. At least his friends are there to help him out until he can go back to being a human. On the bright side, there's also a lot of cool things about being able to see hollownest up close and it's a lot easier to interact with the other bugs. Plus he can even try flying because he got wings.

Based from last main post. He’s a shy little guy when it involves anyone taller than him. Kids aren’t very common in Hallownest, but the bug crew makes do with their limited experience.

Also - no I’m not making this a comic 👁️👁️ seriously. Don’t push me ❤️

If someone does realize the truth about Timmy Turner the changling and Timmy himself is 'brought home', would he still be in pixie form in the human world all of a sudden? Or are there other repercussions?

If a Changeling were to fail its job and be discovered, there will be grave consequences for all involved.

They will be sent back home at the exact age as when they were taken. Time does not rewind, the child does not forget, and the parents will know that they've raised something wrong.

It's a terrible fate for all involved. Timmy Turner has made sure that he will be the first and only child to be taken by Fairies. No one should have to bear the consequences but him and his parents.

So you're a go to source for all things Dick&Tim bros and you tend to write primarily from Dick's POV. So, odd question, but if you were to summarize their relationship from his POV in FIVE panels which panels would you pick? Keeping in mind that one specific aspect of their relationship that you love needs to be clearly represented by each panel (loyalty, trust etc). This was such a kind ask & a cool challenge which I totally failed; here are TWENTY-five panels of Dick's POV on Tim sdfdsfds Look, I got carried away! Marcia and Cindy! The boys!!

OKAY SO BEFORE I GET TO THE PANELS A FEW NOTES:

WARNING THAT THERE ARE SOME NEGATIVE EMOTIONS IN HERE because I love conflict but but but you gotta remember those are not the final word!! They are complicated people and sometimes they get mad at each other BUT ultimately their relationship is so hugely important in both their lives & they love each other and rely on each other so much -!!! <3

Also I have CONCLUDING THOUGHTS at the end about what Dick's POV leaves out (mostly: a lot of Dick defending & protecting & supporting Tim, which Dick does instinctively but isn't very self-aware about most of the time)

I have loosely organized my list into 5^5 format (5 categories with 5 examples each!), so if you want to skip to a relevant one, here are the categories!!

Final rambling thoughts:

TIM: Uhh, okay, so I'm just skimming this list - do you really trust me? you're not just saying that? - but anyway, I'm confused because you left some stuff out? Like some stuff that's kinda important? DICK: No? I think I got everything? TIM (starts counting on his fingers): The time I was having a bad day but then I called you. The time I got captured by Two-Face but then you saved me. The time I fell off a train but then you saved me. The time I fell off a building but then you saved me. The time I fell off a different building - DICK: I feel like you're trying to make some kind of point but I'm not sure what it could be.

SO THE THING IS, I put 25 panels in here and not a single one has Dick catching Tim when he’s falling!!! But I think that's a central motif of their relationship from Tim’s POV, not Dick’s. I love Dick, but in some ways I think he is spectacularly un-self-aware.

And I think he especially has a lot of blind spots about Tim. He kinda intermittently gets that Tim admires him, and he enjoys it in a playful I-get-to-boss-you-around way. But Dick tends to consistently underestimate all of his own good qualities & skills, and he meets Tim at a point in his life when he's especially down on himself & his abilities. And so he's unable to see his own influence on Tim, & therefore unable to fully understand a lot of Tim's priorities and loyalties and motivations, because you can't actually understand Tim without understanding Dick's impact on him. There's a fascinating moment in Bruce Wayne: Murderer when Dick's completely blindsided & upset to discover that Tim doesn't entirely trust Bruce, even though this has been a definitive fact of Tim's whole thing ever since he showed up with his Batman needs Robin theory, and Barbara has to actively remind Dick of the obvious-to-everyone-except-Dick fact that a lot of Tim's loyalty is to Dick, and Tim loves Bruce but feels free to be more wary of him. (And to give Bruce credit: this is not something he ever begrudges.) But anyway Babs points this out, and Dick manages to sorta process it for about five seconds, but he cannot actually accept it into his worldview so instead he discards it at the speed of light and goes off and has an argument with Tim instead sdfsfdsf

All of Dick's virtues - Dick's kindness at the circus and Dick's determination to fight through grief and Dick's rigid sense of morals and Dick's vigilante skills and every time Dick has ever backed Tim up or listened to him or protected him or saved him from something or just been casually kind to a stranger in Tim's presence etc etc etc - all these things loom really large in Tim's mental story of Who Dick Is, and What Dick And Tim's Relationship Is. Tim meets Dick before he meets Bruce, trusts Dick more than Bruce, aspires to be Robin instead of Batman. And so in Tim's default version of the story, Dick is the super-special and admirable hero and Tim is... nobody in particular, a tagalong outsider who's barely managing to be a hero, not part of Dick and Bruce's family and not part of their story, who, if he's VERY LUCKY and tries REALLY HARD, might be able to fight his way to proving himself and offering something to Dick that Dick will value, if Dick doesn't get fed up with him first.

But that's not Dick's version of the story!!!

Dick's version of the story is almost the exact opposite, a story where Dick's an outcast failure black sheep who's screwing up everything he tries, and meanwhile Tim is The Sudden New Perfect Robin Who's Better Than Me And Probably Bruce Loves Him More And Probably They Gossip About What A Loser I Am, mixed with a complicated edge of Tim Thinks He's So Smart But He Doesn't Know Me/Us At All. Dick gets much more attached to Tim over time, and Tim gets unnervingly better at the know-it-all psychoanalysis so then Dick gets to have complicated feelings about him being right instead of just annoyance at him for being wrong, plus Dick's relationship with Bruce improves a lot, so Tim stops feeling so threatening. But Dick never fundamentally changes his basic theory of their relationship in which Tim is highly impressive and capable, and Dick is not so much.

And so asking Dick about Tim is kinda like if you asked George Bailey to tell you about Harry Bailey in It's A Wonderful Life; like, you'll be there for five hours while he tells you how great Harry is, and how accomplished Harry is, and how he doesn't really get how or why Harry does the things he does, and maybe George does feel a little resentful or jealous sometimes, but that pales in comparison to all his admiration and trust for Harry who he loves so much, who's better than him in so many ways, and he's not gonna openly gripe but secretly he can't help but feel sometimes like he's such a failure in comparison to Harry, a perfect person who emerged fully formed from Zeus's head with all the virtues and also all the accomplishments, etc. etc. etc. --

-- and he will not actually remember the part where he changed and saved Harry's whole entire life unless you literally send him to an alternate timeline in order to force him to remember it. <3

They also didn't tell him he was going to be spending extended time in the animus until AFTER the time had already passed, and not only that, they told him in an email. *poseidon has fled (gods don't flee they briskly walk away) left to go back to the sea*

*odysseus, penelope & telemachus are having dinner*

telemachus: *smiling while retelling the meeting to penelope* -and he was so nice! father is so lucky to have him as his friend-

odysseus: *slightly chokes on his food at poseidon still being referred to as his friend*

telemachus: *looks at odysseus* -father are you ok?

penelope: *who knows odysseus' real relationship with poseidon*

penelope: *hasn't had much entertainment in 20 years*

penelope: *wants to stir the pot some more* ignore your father my dear, please continue telling me all about his friend

odysseus: *looking at penelope*

odysseus: *under his breath* penelope why?

*dinner continues with poseidon being the subject much to odysseus' dismay*

telemachus: *enjoying the family dinner*

telemachus: *gasps*

odysseus & penelope: ???

telemachus: we should have a big family dinner! father you can invite lord poseidon! i'll invite athena!

telemachus: *happy with himself for thinking of such an idea*

odysseus: *doesn't want to shoot down his son's idea, but also DOES NOT WANT TO SPEND ANY MORE TIME WITH POSEIDON*

odysseus: *scrambling for an excuse* son, he's a god and surely is very busy an-

penelope: *with a devilish grin* -and i'm sure will make time for his friend! what a wonderful idea telemachus! i'll let the palace cooks know!

penelope: off you go dear husband~ go and let your friend know~

odysseus: it's evening-

penelope: first thing tomorrow then!

odysseus: *sighs in resignment* yes my love

telemachus: great! i can't wait to tell athena-

*athena appearing out of nowhere*

athena: i heard my name and came.

odysseus: athena?!

telemachus: athena!!

penelope: oh lady athena!

athena: *smiling whilst looking at telemachus* what would you like to ask me telemachus?

telemachus: oh yeah! we're going to have a big family dinner! father just needs to invite his god friend-

athena: *confused as she's odysseus' god friend* but i-

odysseus: *panicked* wait-

telemachus: -lord poseidon!

athena: *wide-eyed in shock*

athena: *slow blinking* did you say odysseus' friend is p-po- my uncle?!

telemachus: *nods and smiles* yeah, i thought you knew!

odysseus: *wondering how he'll explain this whole situation to athena*

odysseus: *under his breath* well now she knows...

penelope: *laughs to herself*

it is all chaos and entropy. the thing is that the chaos and entropy make it beautiful and lovely.

yes, it's true that nature and the universe are uncaring and unspecific, and that is terrifying. i have lived through some of the unfairness - i got born like this, with my body caving into itself, with this ironic love of dance when i sometimes can't stand up for longer than 15 minutes. i am a poet with hands that are slowly shutting down - i can't hold a pen some days. recently i found a dead bird on our front porch. she had no visible injuries. she had just died, the way things die sometimes.

it is also true that nature and the universe are uncaring and unspecific, and that is wonderful. the sheer happenstance that makes rain turn into a rainbow. the impossible coincidence of finding your best friend. i have made so many mistakes and i have let myself down and i have harmed other people by accident. nature moves anyway. on the worst day of my life she delivers me an orange juice sunset, as if she is saying try again tomorrow.

how vast and unknowing the universe! how small we are! isn't that lovely. the universe has given us flowers and harp strings and the shape of clouds. how massive our lives are in comparison to a grasshopper. the world so bright, still undiscovered. even after 30 years of being on this earth, i learned about a new type of animal today: the dhole.

chance echoing in my life like a harmony between two people talking. do you think you and i, living in different worlds but connected through the internet - do you think we've ever seen the same butterfly? they migrate thousands of miles. it's possible, right?

how beautiful the ways we fill the vastness of space. i love that when large amounts of people are applauding in a room, they all start clapping at the same time. i love that the ocean reminds us of our mother's heartbeat. i love that out of all the colors, chlorophyll chose green. i love the coincidences. i love the places where science says i don't know, but it just happens.

"the universe doesn't care about you!" oh, i know. that's okay. i care about the universe. i will put my big stupid heart out into it and watch the universe feast on it. it is not painful. it is strange - the more love you pour into the unfeeling world, the more it feels the world loves you in return. i know it's confirmation bias. i think i'm okay if my proof of kindness is just my own body and my own spirit.

i buried the bird from our porch deep in the woods. that same day, an old friend reaches out to me and says i miss you. wherever you go, no matter how bad it gets - you try to do good.
