It's been hard for my kiddo, since Christmas he has been looking forward to his birthday, which is in June. It's always been too many days away for him to keepmtrack. But now, it's in a manageable chunk. We also have the school holidays coming up, which will include a couple thjngs he'll very much enjoy.
So today I wrote on his chalkboard:
32 days to Happy Birthday
42 days to surprise for [kiddo]
51 days to mum's birthday
55 days to train to Wellington
So he would have a visual reminder of things to look forward to.
He doesn't know that the surprise is a bouncy castle event, which he enjoyed a special sensory session of last year. They're not doing the sensory session this year because they didn't get enough numbers to cover the cost, so we're going to try the regular event and hope it's not overload.
He also doesn't know the train trip will be a steam train. It will take us to town and we'll have 2 hours to spend before the return trip, so we'll probably end up doing the cable car while we're there.
Anyway, I showed him the board and read out the list, he went away to stew on it for a few minutes, then came back, and rubbed off my birthday. Irrelevant, according to him, haha.

What happened with s5 of izombie? My husband and I never finished it because it was missing something, idk what though, and I have no idea how it ended
This is with a few years hazy memory and @kiranerys can help me out here. the show did an Occupation Seattle and the show lost its direction. Major became a Soldier and that just....soured me on the show quickly. a lot of his characterization was thrown out the window. at some point during the season we basically went "what if we just....didn't watch this show anymore"

Wifeswap AU: Mat/Faile and Perrin/Tuon
I kind of covered this in Perrin's Cursed Shadar Logoth Ax AU, in that I think Coyote Cauthon would end up with Berelain, and Faile would be his Birgitte-style galpal, and Gun!Perrin/Tuon is a hideous disaster that hopefully doesn't have all its shit hit the fan until after the Last Battle.
2. BUT. Someone on here (and I need to look up who) had a theory that the two birds fighting over a ta'veren were originally supposed to be Tuon and Berelain, and the ensuing choice would have been between allying with the invading descendants of Hawkwing vs the local descendants of Hawkwing. Part of the idea was that this would have tied into the Old Blood thing that Mat had early on, and Mat would have had the raising Manetheren plotline. 3. Aside from the bird thing as it currently is being kind of gross and thematically not super interesting, and the Mat's Old Blood plotline mostly ending up as Early Installment Weirdness instead of tying into the raising of Manetheren, I think there's evidence for this in the fact that Tuon and Faile have a lot of strange little similarities.
4. But keeping the setting and plot the same, and just trying to make it work personality wise... I could maybe see Mat doing like a slowburn friends to lovers thing with Faile? They've got the knife kink going for them & Mat loves a competent violent lady. Mat's a little bit in love with almost every woman, so the trick to getting Mat to fall hard in love is some combination of him being emotionally ready, and also kinda frog-boiling him in slightly escalating feelings that he doesn't notice until it's too late for him to escape. For her part, Faile seems very firmly not into twinks, but otoh that'll help; this is not going to work if Faile comes on too strong too fast. Faile admires competency but also wants a fixer-upper, and Mat does fit the bill.
5. I have to go with a variation on the Gunk Premise for Perrin/Tuon; Perrin has just killed Faile or someone else he loves sincerely, goes off the rails because he can't trust himself anymore, and ends up doing wetwork for Tuon because he wants to be punished, used, and eventually discarded by a professional. Tuon makes him a Seeker and loves him in the way she loves her tools, and I guess if Mat isn't in the picture and she needs to make an alliance she might marry him, but it's pretty unlikely to get healthier or more equal. UNLESS she gets made damane, and Perrin rescues her, and then probably someone else entirely gets them therapy and teaches them both how to be functional people somehow, and they have some sort of hint of a real relationship in the aftermath. Which would actually be kind of cool, but is not something I'm equipped to write, that's like several levels of whump beyond my skill or interest level.

Galad and Rand met briefly in the garden scene in teotw. They don't met up again until amol I think, but never had a discussion nor did Rand get to tell him about their relation
I just thought that scene didn’t really Qualify as a proper meeting since it was more focussed on the Rand/Elayne side of things - but yeah, I would’ve loved for them to eventually acknowledge their parentage properly! It’s such a big Thing that Galad kind of feels that Morgase sort of did him a kindness by treating him like her own kid & feels indebted to her for raising him with so much love and Rand struggles with the idea of properly belonging somewhere that it would’ve been very thematically appropriate for the meeting to happen beyond just wish fulfilment reasons, although I know both of them are generally very content with the adopted families they grew up with.

What's your headcanon on how Evie and Jonathan's parents died?
Sorry for taking SO LONG to respond, oh my god
I’ve had pretty much the same one since ~2003. With just a bit of tweaking because originally I had them die in a landslide but after a bit of thought (and reading the novelisation, which has its good and less good points) went for something a little different.
In the headcanon I use as background to my fics, John and Salwa Carnahan  died in late August 1922 (just a few months before Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun). They’d promised Evy and Jonathan they’d spend September together before Evy went back to Oxford. They’d been on a plane for the first time a few weeks before, so the plan was to board in Cairo to Thessaloniki, Greece, and from there another plane to Rome. Unfortunately, there was a problem and the plane went down over the Mediterranean with no survivors.
There are two scenes in which I have Jonathan, then Evy recall what happened (their memories of it, anyway) in my story Fairy Tales and Hokum, and here’s what Evy says (because she’s more concise):
“They found parts of the plane floating in the Mediterranean sea, of course, and enough evidence that nobody had survived before sending us the letter. I went to absolute pieces when we got it. Jonathan had to make tea and sit on the floor with me until I could breathe properly. I don’t think he remembers now, though, he looked like a sleepwalker at the time.
(The mental image was so powerful I ended up drawing it, btw.)
So, there you go. I know passenger planes were far from the norm in 1922, and to be fair I don’t think this headcanon holds up to close scrutiny, but it’s mine and I’m fond of it :o)

💘 - for the ship that’s unpopular, but I still like?  Well, it depends on what corner of the MCU fandom you’re in, but I still adore the Steve/Peggy ship, despite the way Endgame made a lot of people in my fandom circles feel.  I shipped them from the first moment I saw CA:TFA 8 years ago and I still ship them now.  And I will absolutely admit that the way they wrote things in Endgame made no fucking sense and I want it changed/undone and that’s what fanfic is for, but these two are still my canon babies and I love them together.  I just have to be sure to not think at all too hard about the logistics of it otherwise I get frustrated and ragey in the direction of the writers and directors.

hxans said: “Sounds like we are roughly the same age and my heart breaks for you that you did not see The Mummy when it came out in '99 haha. But at least you found it eventually!”
I’m slap in my mid-30s, so probably. :-)
I didn’t see a lot of movies between the ages of 11 and 14, though I’m not sure why. I was a terrible prude as a tween and teen, though I’ve gotten better, and I was more interested in books. But one night in college I was hanging out with one of my oldest friends, when for what ever reason she made the quip, “What is a place like me doing in a girl like this?” and I asked what that was from and she stared at me.
“...The Mummy.”
“Oh,” said I, blithely unaware of what I was about to unleash. “I’ve never seen The Mummy.”
“I’m sorry, what?” squawked the friend that I had inflicted years of Indiana Jones knock-off adventure stories on.
“I’ve seen parts of the second one!” I replied.
“WHAT.”
“It looked terrible, with those bugs coming out of that guy’s mouth and the screaming and the death--”
“How have you never seen The Mummy?” screeched my friend. “You are that movie! That movie is you! If I were to wave a magic wand and turn you into a movie, it would be this one!”
“It’s a horror movie, isn’t it?” By this time I knew I was in trouble. I still tried to save face. “You know  how I feel about horror movies.”
My friend was already going to her bookcase full of dvds. “Sit down,” she said, “I’m about to change your life.”
And she did.

Cliff Simon, who is best known as the character Ba'al on Stargate SG-1, passed away on March 9, 2021. Daniel Wallace said that "when a man's stories are remembered, then he is immortal," so let's remember and celebrate a truly singular character and a very talented man. May his memory be a blessing.
The collection is live and awaiting your creativity!
There are no limits to what we can create to show our love! Anything goes, as long as it involves Ba'al. All genres and ratings are welcome, as long as they're tagged appropriately. Likewise, there is no limit on word count. Everything from humble drabbles to multi-chapter mega fics are welcome.
Not a writer, but still wanting to participate? Send in prompts, requests, or even just headcanons to inspire our writers. You can send them in an ask, or email them to [email protected]. I will be maintaining one "fic" in the collection purely as a repository for this inspiration. Writers can feel free to use anything in that document as a jumping-off point for their projects.

tell a story about your childhood
Okay, um, when I was in kindergarten, we - bunch of tiny idiots who hated the place, cos it was not really a good place, we were not taken care of, we were mocked, laughed at, and honestly it was an abusive environment, one time those who supposed to take care of us scared the shit out of us for their fun, all of us were crying non stop after and then we were yelled at why we cry, but it was 90s after we left soviet union finally, so who cared about kids :/ so we decided to escape, we had a plan, me and my brother were the brains, and you know what? we did it :D
We went outside of that place, past the gate, we walked down the street, and we were caught because one of the toddlers started crying.
It sounds fun cos I was the kid who was escaping a facility, but when I look back it's wild what a fucking disaster of a place it was, how unsafe it was that bunch of pre schoolers and toddlers escaped it and went outside on street, and there were cars on the road, 90s were wild.

For the I'm not from the US ask set, 24 & 30
24. what other nation is joked about most often in your country?
Hm.... I can easily answer: about Americans and be done with that. can I? But now it’s more of a concern than laughing about them.
30. do you have people of different nationalities in your family?
As far as I know from my mother side I have Russians and Ukrainians (or Russian that lived in Ukraine), from father side most likely Jewish and may be some Caucasians (just judging from my mothers stories and how he looked like on photos). My husb has Chuvash, Russian and may be Tatar ancestors.
It wasn’t really important so we can’t say back for more that two generations.
I believe myself to be Russian and my husband too.
Thanks @hxans for asking :)

I grew up in Lubbock, it's funny seeing it (and TTU) mentioned in one of your stories. I can smell/taste the dust and feel the sun as I read <3
It was a little strange to write about! I’ve been around Texas quite a bit of course, but never to Lubbock, and I don’t know much history of the place. So I based a lot of what I was writing on the history research I did on a town in Oregon :D

*gasp* Sam, you don't RINSE your butter?! :p I was always the one on rinse and butter paddles duty becasue I was too small to churn it, but I could rinse and squish like a pro! My great uncles liked to humour us and let us "play farm" when we went to visit. Only in retrospect did I realize they didn't even KEEP milking cows at that point, and they bought in cream specifically for us to churn.
I never knew you should! Churning butter is great for kids because it keeps them occupied -- a friend of mine always brings a jar full of cream and a clean marble to let the kid churn with when she babysits :D
figtreeandvine replied to your post “auressea reblogged your photo and added: ...”
According to my mother's stories, an additional step is to knead the butter in cold saltwater. The idea is to get as much of the whey/milk solids out as possible. Otherwise the butter can go rancid or even mold. (My grandparents kept a Jersey. Butter making was not a hobby.)
I suppose it’s fortunate I can keep it in the fridge, where it’s at least less likely to happen. I’d no idea leaving a little buttermilk in could do that!
hxans replied to your post “drgaellon replied to your photo “@tehnakki, have I ever showed you...”
Do you know the trick with parchment paper is to roll it out across the pan with enough spare to fit the sides, and then cut at the corners the depth of the dish? Then when you press it in it will stay in shape and and side bits usually fold around each other so there's no gaps in the corners.
Oh yeah, I’m just too lazy to deal with it sometimes :D

ooh! i was just thinking about this story the other day, and I was maybe going to ask you about it! perfect timing. i have to finish a thesis by monday but i will read it as soon as i'm done.
Good luck with your thesis! I remember those days....

I mean, figuring out a remote murder ought to keep you busy for quite some time :D

I am intrigued at why these biscuits are considered cursed. Is it the mysterious 'fermented butter"?
I don’t even remember at this point, just that we both had bad things happen to us after making them :D
