It's not really in the wild when it's on palace grounds, is it? But yes, Genya is in fact very sweet and the light was emphasizing her beauty!
Been looking for my lead Fabrikator and found him in the wild. I guess I'll let them be, cause look how sweet they are! @ask-genyasafin @davidkostyk-durast

Tolya, Mal and David
I'm trying to make it difficult for you to choose love.
hehe
That's evil! 😭 (do it again)
I would marry David (he was a pookie in the trilogy)
I would fuck Mal (he's an asshole but at least he's a handsome asshole. It's gonna be a one-night-stand anyway)
I would kill Tolya

What are five of your favourite Grishaverse quotes? Send this ask to 5 of your favourite grishaverse blogs!
this is a lot tougher than i thought it would be... and i've made a gifset for everyone one these lol i added a bonus because i don't feel like i praise tolya enough (or at all), but i wanted to add it so badly so my bad.
“I would have come for you. And if I couldn't walk, I'd crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we'd fight our way out together--knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that's what we do. We never stop fighting.” (Kaz, Crooked Kingdom)
[Genya] watched the others move up the step, then said, “Na razrusha'ya. E'ya razrushost." I am not ruined. I am ruination.”(Genya, Ruin and Rising)
“We learn to hold our heads as if we wear crowns. We learn to wring magic from the ordinary. That was how you survived when you weren’t chosen, when there was no royal blood in your veins. When the world owed you nothing, you demanded something of it anyway.” (Inej, Crooked Kingdom)
“What are you doing?” [Genya] whispered. “Studying something beautiful,” [David] said without the faintest hint of flattery, as if he truly were trying to find the formula for the woman before him.” (Genya and David, Rules of Wolves)
"He needed to tell her … what? That she was lovely and brave and better than anything he deserved. That he was twisted, crooked, wrong, but not so broken that he couldn’t pull himself together into some semblance of a man for her. That without meaning to, he’d begun to lean on her, to look for her, to need her near. He needed to thank her for his new hat." (Kaz, Six of Crows)
bonus: (it's so long, sorry)
Zoya bristled at that. “The Second Army was a refuge.”
“Maybe for some,” said Tolya. “The D*rkling took Grisha from their parents when they were only children. They were taught to forget the places they came from, the people they knew. They served the crown or their families suffered. What kind of choice is that?”
“But no one experimented on us,” said Zoya. And some of us were perfectly happy to forget our parents.
“No,” said Tolya, resting his huge hands on his knees. “They just turned you into soldiers and sent you out to fight their wars.”
(Zoya and Tolya, Rules of Wolves)

Except you enthrall me, never shall be free
III. By the end of the first week, Alina began to ask questions.
Aleksander answered the simplest and brought her a collection of books chosen by the Little Palace librarian, an austere personage rarely seen and evenly more rarely stymied in the search for texts. He arranged for a daily tea-service with a novel selection of fruits and pastries, and scheduled her time away from Master Botkin’s training rooms. He was delighted and proud, smiling enough that Ivan scowled and inquired if General Kirigan had received some particularly important intelligence from Ketterdam.
By the end of the second week, Alina’s questions continued unabated and Aleksander had begun to take a deep breath before he opened the door to her room. Her curiosity was admirable but, though it grieved him to admit it to himself, exhausting, wide-ranging and unchecked, her initial wary hesitance having been praised and coaxed away by him; he read in Fedyor’s eyes and Genya’s that he had only himself to hold responsible for Alina’s questions, though Fedyor was kind enough to tell him the younglings would likely be much the same, except that Dame Baghra birched them so soundly they’d learned a discretion that was entirely foreign to Alina.
By the end of the month, Aleksander was beside himself. The expression was apt; he sometimes felt Alina was some alternate version of himself, the way he had been as Eryk and Anton, inquisitive and irrepressible, eager and buoyed by his own eagerness. And he sometimes felt he might tear out his hair if she asked another question he couldn’t answer or didn’t answer to her satisfaction. He had hoped for her, wished for her for such a long, long time, but the euphoria of her discovery and his relief at her survival were tempered now by the person she was, the reality of a peer more discomfiting than he had anticipated.
“For Saints’ sake, Alina—”
“Do you mean it, when you call on them?” she interrupted. “I wouldn’t have thought so—aren’t they, weren’t at least some of them your contemporaries? It would be like me calling on…Zoya, I guess, if she hadn’t tried to pummel me—”
“She tried to pummel you?”
Alina waved her hand in a universally recognizable it-was-nothing gesture and he felt the shift of light and dark echoing within him, saw her wrist encircled with the old betrothal tattoos of the eastern fells, gold against gold, and it was enough to keep him from permanently exiling Nazyalensky.
“Please don’t distract me,” she said. “You never answered my first question—”
“It wasn’t your first question,” he muttered under his breath and she smiled, undeterred. He’d given her that, that confidence to persist in asking instead of offering to be quiet, and it mitigated his irritation somewhat.
“Why do we need the actual Fold anymore? Hasn’t its power, your power, been adequately demonstrated by this point and wouldn’t removing it be even more terrifying to other nation-states and factions?” Alina asked. Aleksander had been tried in several courts over his lifetime and suddenly was put in mind of that advocate in Ulensk in his tall fur hat and cloak, his interrogation subtle, effective as a finely woven net. “Aren’t we losing more than we gain from it, given the percentage of travelers who don’t survive the crossing?”
“You just asked me four questions,” he pointed out.
“You’re stalling,” she replied. It was true, so he made no attempt at a rebuttal.
“You propose I simply remove the Fold,” he said. “As if those words could make any actual sense.”
“I haven’t figured out the logistics, I suppose something with merzost, not the bad kind, would work, or maybe that Fabrikator David would have some ideas. He’s very bright, you know,” she said. Aleksander was tempted to lower his head to the vicinity of his knees.
“Alina, it wouldn’t be easy for me,” he said. Could he come back from wherever he would need to go to accomplish such a feat? Would he be himself when he returned? What consequences would he fail to account for, what new disaster might he bring down upon them all?
“It wouldn’t be for you to do alone, Sashenka,” she said, using the familiar form of his name no one had dared or bothered with for years. It was as dear as a kiss, a reminder that she was his equal. “We could do it together, it would look so sudden and swift no one would be able to make any sense of it. That exercise of power, it would make it clear to the world that we may act beyond any diplomacy or negotiation if we believe we must. I don’t know about the volcra though, do you think they’d be able to become human again? Or are they their own creatures now and how could we find a way to co-exist with them? I can see it going either way and the chief Healer might have some ideas we could work with, if we consider them injured. Or we could see what the diplomatic corps has to offer—do you think the volcra would want sovereignty over the region that was the Unsea?”
“This is impossible,” he said.
“It was impossible. Now it’s possible if improbable,” she said. She leaned forward and touched her hand very lightly to his cheek and then his shoulder. Even without his being an amplifier, it would have felt like an embrace. She wrinkled her forehead in thought and he braced himself against the next onslaught and her absolute loveliness. Shadows collected in the corners of the room and began to encircle them, drawing them closer. He looked at his own hands, loosely folded in his lap, and saw the shimmer of light across his palms. She lifted her chin and held his gaze with her own. “Have you ever considered you’ve got merzost all wrong, Sasha?”
“And they called me the Black Heretic,” he said.
“I thought that was you, but I wasn’t sure,” she said. “It’s just, everyone who’s used merzost so far, I think, haven’t they all been on their own?”
He nodded.
“But we wouldn’t be. Maybe it wouldn’t have worked, even for us, if you hadn’t done what you did to save me, if we weren’t already, how can I put this? In covenant with each other? That seems right, it feels right when I say it aloud—it’s not only about balance but about sharing. Trust. You and I now, we Summon what we need, at least, you do and I’m learning. It isn’t a corruption or an abomination if we are giving and want to give, the way you were with me when I was dying. I don’t think Ilya Morozova understood mending very well—how much care it takes to do well, how something repaired isn’t flawed but enhanced. He probably thought it was woman’s work and ignored it. He didn’t leave much room for anyone else to offer an alternate explication. There were other Grisha who had to be thinking about the same issues, but to find anything they’ve written is harder than pulling a snowflake from the sea. I think, honestly, Ilya must have been a terrible bully. And probably pretty dull conversationally speaking.”
Aleksander took in the pretty, prim purse of her lips, her head tilted to one side, the hope and trepidation in her tone. Her slight figure in her black kefta, the bit of blue silk that peeped out from one of her cuffs, the curve of her cheek and the squaring of her narrow shoulders. He’d wanted her for so long and now she was here and more than he’d prepared for, overwhelming. Intoxicating.
“Alina, you are annihilating,” he said.
“You say that like it’s a bad thing,” she answered, closing the distance between them. He felt the most tremendous surge of tenderness for her and no small flare of sexual attraction, the former the greater surprise. “Like it’s final, that we don’t live in a world of seasons and mushrooms.”
“Mushrooms?”
“They grow over dying things. Life finding a way,” she said.
“Sometimes they kill you,” he said.
“And sometimes they give you visions,” she countered. “They let you see in the darkness. Into the darkness.”
“I think the Duke of Keramzin allowed his orphans to do far too much foraging,” Aleksander said.
“Only in books,” Alina said. “Do you think I’m right?”
“I don’t know,” he said. “I think we’ll have to figure that out together.”
“I was hoping you’d just agree with me,” she admitted and he laughed.
“I may have created a monster,” he said. “You were a humble mapmaker a month ago.”
“I was a mediocre mapmaker. Not humble. And the time for monsters is over,” she said.
“Tell that to Fjerda and Shu-Han,” he replied, unable to keep the bitterness from his voice. She didn’t pat his arm or smile encouragingly, but instead let her face reflect his own urge for destruction. She did have her own scores to settle, debts that could never be completely cleared.
“That’s for after we deal with the Fold and the volcra. The Apparat too, he gives me a bad feeling. And Dame Baghra—”
“Baghra is not going to take kindly to any of this. What you want us to undertake,” Aleksander said, in perhaps the greatest understatement of the past five centuries.
“She doesn’t take kindly to anything or anyone,” Alina replied. “But if we can make her see what’s possible…”
Aleksander thought of his mother and her long stare, her unbound hair like a storm around her, the last time she had presented herself as a Summoner in full command of her small science. Night had seemed as day in contrast to the darkness she conjured forth. She could be a staunch ally, a daunting foe. If Alina asked him a thousand questions about her, he wouldn’t be able to answer even one.
“Why don’t we start with David Kostyk,” Aleksander suggested. “I’ve found him to have a remarkable ability to find unexpected solutions to the most tangled problems. And he’s the least likely to be shocked by your ideas.”
“We should go to his studio,” Alina said. “He might think he was in trouble if you send for him to come to your rooms and Genya is in mine so often, we won’t get a word out of him.”
“You’ve noticed, then, his…preference for Miss Safin?” Aleksander said.
“I wouldn’t have needed to Summon to see what’s right there,” Alina replied. “Anyone in love could recognize his expression, how he’s afraid she’d reject him and how that keeps him quiet.”
“You think he needn’t be?” Aleksander asked. The inquiry should not have felt as great a risk as the ritual he’d done to save her life and anneal their power, and yet, looking at her face and wanting her welcome, he understood it to be the truth. They were beyond desiring possession.
“She would’ve let him know if his feelings weren’t returned in equal measure,” Alina said, her eyes brighter than any Summoned sfera. “It’s less a leap of faith than he imagines to speak—more like a hop.”
“Are you sure?” he said.
“I can’t lie to you, Aleksander,” she said. “I can’t help wondering—”
“You don’t have to,” he said, moving so his lips grazed her forehead, her temple, her cheek. “Keep wondering,” he murmured, as it grew dim around them. For the first time, he was not afraid of the dark.

for the grishverse asks…just all of them, if you’re okay with that ofc!
Thanks for the ask! This was so much fun to think about. 💙
There's some that I'd already answered, so I tried to give new responses. It got quite long, and there's a lot of spoilers, so keep reading under the cut.
Shadow: rank all the Grishaverse books you’ve read.
Six of Crows. Almost tied with Crooked Kingdom. This is one of my favourite books ever. The characters are some of my favourite characters ever, and the ships are perfect. I love how detailed their backstories and personalities are, it makes them so believable and nuanced. I'm a sucker for heists and plot twists I can barely comprehend, so this is the perfect book for me.
Crooked Kingdom. More of the characters, ships and storylines I've already fallen in love with? Yes please. I ate up all the Kanej content, and I was so sad when it ended, it's such a great duology.
King of Scars. Another great book. Maybe the plot wasn't as good, and it felt a little slow, but Zoyalai? The Grisha Triumvirate? Genya and David? Perfection. Honestly a book can have the most boring plot ever, but as long as I get interesting characters with great dynamics I won't care, I'm here for them and them only.
Ruin and Rising. I remember the original trilogy very vaguely, but I thought this was the best book out of all of them. It definitely wasn't perfect, I found the storyline of the tunnels so suffocating, and every time someone mentioned the Apparat I wanted to throw the book across the room, but overall it was a nice conclusion to the trilogy.
Shadow and Bone. It's not perfect, but clearly good enough to get me hooked. I was instantly amazed at the worldbuilding, and I liked the way we're introduced to the different elements of the Grishaverse. Sometimes it's too much information at once, or you get confused because something hasn't been properly introduced, but Leigh Bardugo did a great job of that, and paces it well.
Rule of Wolves. I liked most of the book and I absolutely loved the moments focused on Zoya, but it completely ruined Nina for me. I loved her so much before, but here I got bored on every chapter that was about her. I think a lot of her character development was ruined on this book, and her ending was so bad.
Siege and Storm. The only reason this book is ranked last is I can barely remember anything. I liked Nikolai, but Mal and Alina were so annoying.
Bone: have you seen the show? What’s the best part of it?
I have seen it, and even though it's far from perfect, it's one of my favourite shows ever. Even though it's hard, I do have to separate it from the books to be able to enjoy it properly though, because let's be honest, it's not a very good adaptation. So considering that, I loved the cast and the times the crows were on screen. I think my favourite part overall was during season 2, when the crows and Zoya went on their little side quest to Shu-Han. I also loved Genya and David, they were adorable, but I'm gonna have to go on to the next question before I start thinking about them too much.
Siege: if you got to kill off one character, who would it be?
I don't know, the Darkling? I couldn't believe he was still alive in King of Scars, and it felt a little forced to be honest. Or Tante Heleen.
Storm: share and tag your favorite fan art.
My favorite fanarts these Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom papercrafts by @rosiethorns88. The level of details is insane, I could look at it for hours. I also really love @kayadraws and @chemdoodles artworks. I couldn't choose a specific one because they're all so cute and fun, and I love the styles in which they draw the characters.
Ruin: favorite character?
Like I said, Leigh Bardugo writes amazing characters, so this is a really tough choice, but overall I have to go with Inej Ghafa. Honorable mentions to Zoya, Kaz, Nina, Genya and Nikolai.
Rising: what’s the best ship? Canon or otherwise.
Again, a lot of amazing ships, but Kanej will always be my favourite, closely followed by Zoyalai.
Six: favorite Grishaverse quote?
I've answered this one here, but another quote I love is this one from the King of Scars duology:
Zoya of the lost city. Zoya of the garden. Zoya bleeding in the snow. You are strong enough to survive the fall.
Both quotes hit really hard as I read them, cause they were such defining moments for Inej and Zoya, where they realise their potential and who they really are, so they were very special to me.
Crow: which crows do you most and least like?
I answered this here, so I'm gonna do my second most and least favourites. My second favourite is Kaz. I think it's really cool how he's such a complex character but in a way that doesn't redeem him, if that makes any sense. Like he might be willing to change and improve himself, but he's still very much a ruthless criminal. I also love how he is completely aware of that, especially when it comes to Inej. As for my second lest favourite, I guess Wylan? Don't get me wrong, I still love him, but the other crows are just perfect to me.
Crooked: if you got to rewrite the first chapter of Six of Crows, how would you do it?
I don't think I'd rewrite it, I'd just have another chapter before that one, with at least one of the crows and an introduction to the plot of Joost's chapter. I remember reading it and being so confused, because it jumps straight into what's a pretty complicated story. If I did have to rewrite it, I would write it from one of the crows' perspective, because it was really confusing not seeing Joost at all during the rest of the book, and I don't think it would have been very hard to have maybe Inej sneak into the Van Eck mansion to spy.
Kingdom: pick a character and give them a theme song.
I've answered this one here, but recently I've been thinking of Jesper whenever I listen to Little Lion Man by Mumford & Sons.
King: what’s your favorite idea for a new series in the Grishaverse?
Maybe not for a new series, but I like the idea of continuing Rule of Wolves where they left it, so we could have another heist with the crows looking for Sankt Feliks's heart, which would tie in the Six of Crows and the King of Scars duologies together. I think it would be such a great story for so many reasons. For starters, it gives a reason for the crows and the King of Scars gang to interact more, which I'd love to see. Genya would be able to heal from losing David and maybe get a cool storyline focusing more on her. We'd get to see more of Zoya as the queen, and her relationship with Nikolai. Heist shenanigans. Wesper being dragged into a new mission. Kaz trying to trick the Ravkans. Zoya not having any of his nonsense. Kanej. Inej as Captain Ghafa. Kanej. Tolya and Tamar meeting the crows. KANEJ. And above all else, a chance to fix Nina's ending. So. Much. Potential.
Scars: which character deserved better?
Well on that note, I'm gonna go with Nina. Also Genya and David!!
Rule: favorite book cover?
Six of Crows. I love how the crow's feathers also act as the silhouette of Ketterdam.
Wolves: sort all the characters you can into Hogwarts houses, (or choose to give them zodiacs, mbtis, alignments, etc—).
I'm gonna go with Hogwarts houses because I know nothing about zodiacs or any of those things.
Kaz Brekker: Slytherin.
Inej Ghafa: Ravenclaw.
Jesper Fahey: Gryffindor.
Nina Zenik: Gryffindor.
Wylan Van Eck: Ravenclaw.
Matthias Helvar: Hufflepuff.
Kuwei Yul-Bo: Ravenclaw.
Alina Starkov: Hufflepuff.
Malyen Oretsev: Gryffindor.
Nikolai Lanstov: Slytherin.
Zoya Nazyalensky: Slytherin.
Genya Safin: Hufflepuff.
David Kostyk: Ravenclaw.
Tolya Yul-Bataar: Ravenclaw.
Tamar Kir-Bataar: Gryffindor.
The Darkling: Slytherin.
Ketterdam: change the ending of one of the books.
I think I'd just have something at the end of Rule of Wolves that indicated that there was definitely going to be another book about that heist I was talking about. I also said about how much I hated Nina's ending, but honestly, I don't think that could be fixed by just changing the ending, especially after spending two whole books undermining her character development.
Os Alta: when did you get into the Grishaverse? Tell us all about it.
It was in July 2021, and I went camping with my friends and family. Every night my friend read me and my other friend a bit of Six of Crows, which she had recently discovered and was obsessed with. We got really into it, and she convinced me to read the books. As soon as we got back home I started reading Alina's trilogy, then the duologies. Because my friend had only read the Six of Crows duology, I convinced her to read the rest, so full circle moment.
Djerholm: what pair of characters would you kill to see interact with each other?
Inej and Zoya above all, but also Kaz and The Darkling, cause I just think it would be hilarious. Picture the most powerful man in the world, who's been around for centuries, practically rules over a country and all the magical people in it, and is responsible for the most dangerous and horrific creation to ever exist. Now picture an emo teenager who's into magic and calls the love of his life an investment. The Darkling would not stand a chance.
The Unsea: what type of Grisha powers would you want to have? Or what crow’s skills would you want to steal?
If I was Grisha I would love to be a Tidemaker. As for the crows I think Inej's skills would be fun to have.
The True Sea: rant about whatever Grishaverse thing you want to (a hot take, something that bothers you, something you love, etc).
I think I've ranted enough for one post, and I'm too tired to think right now, but I would love to talk more about any of these things, just pop back in my ask box whenever you want.
This has been so much fun to write, so thanks again for the ask! 💙

oh I got SO EXCITED when I saw in the author's notes that you were writing a one-shot for David's games, YAAAAAS
Thank you!!! Of course as soon as I said that I got slammed at work so we'll see how long it actually takes for me to write it lol. It's probably not going to be just a straight recap of the Games--it's going to be more focused on the One Big Thing David did that made him so infamous and the fallout from that. I hope it can live up to expectations!

very intrigued by the i fucking hate chalk wip 👀
ayyy yay. as the title might've tipped you off lol, i really hate chalk. i think its the sensory nightmare to end all sensory nightmares, esp how it sounds. and so to cope with having to listen to that noise in class, i wrote (the beginnings of) a vent fic about David Kostyk inventing the whiteboard (because come on, he prolly has to hear it all the time to. and i can see my sensory issues reflected in that man's eyes thank you very much).
Sometimes David wishes he’d been born to some other order. Not very often, but sometimes. And by sometimes he means every time someone gets it in their head to try and use the labs’ chalk boards while he’s in there trying to work. Or, really, trying to do anything but listen to that awful squeaking-creaking sound dusty, nasty feeling chalk makes against the rough, made equally dusty green of the board. Sometimes he wishes he could cart all five of them up to the second floor and chuck all five of them off the balcony. And be asked zero questions about it, preferably. Other times he wishes he could put all the tiny stubs of chalk in a sack and then put that sack on the floor and stomp on that sack until it was nothing but powder and then bury that sack somewhere no one would ever find it, granted that someone also buried the sack for him. Because no thank you to all that dust on his hands. Or the dirt. And then to finish the job, of course, he’d have to suddenly gain the magical, not small scientific, as that didn’t seem to be a gift grisha power covered —he’d have figured it out by now if it was— ability to erase memories that chalk ever existed or could ever be made to exist. And then burn whatever paper copies they had of its chemical formula, lest someone should stumble on the process independently.
#wip game#tag games#fic#thankss for the ask <3<3#david kostyk#i think this is at least a century early for the whiteboard to be invented#but i think davids got it covered anyway

And brave. And caring. And smart, strong, creative and patient. I know the question said only three traits, but I feel like it's important to mention those too.
What are 3 words you would use to describe yourself?
Oh, this is a tricky one. I think I'm going to go with: loyal, organised, and bold.
Loyal, because my friends are perhaps the most important thing in my life. The people who've stuck by me have made a world of difference, and I'd never abandon or betray any of them.
Organised, because it's the part of my job that's the most calming. Amongst all the chaos, I find it almost relaxing to be able to settle down and plan a festival, or whatever else. It helps me make sense of whatever else is going on.
And bold, because it's a trait I've cultivated in myself over the years, and one which has served me well. I never want to sacrifice my own interests for those of power, and I love that I have a clearer idea of what those interests are and how to protect them.

A Steel That Went Through Hottest Fire: Chapter I - Steel Your Heart
Summary: You're a Durast in the Second Army of Ravka. You work in the Little Palace, having a quiet life. But that changes, when one day General Kirigan takes an interest in you. Your life is about to change. The question is… for better or for worse?
A/N: Happy New Year! I know, I posted I may have another fic about General KiriganxReader for Christmas. It didn't work out due to some things, but here it finally is! And still in this year (at least in my time zone). So, it's not a Christmas present from me to you, as I intended, but at least it can be a gift for a New Year. I hope it will be wonderful to you all and that we will get "Shadow and Bone" renewed for the third season. Enjoy this story! As usual, I don't own anything from "Shadow and Bone". Nor you. English still isn't my first language, so if you see some mistakes, let me know.
Chapter Summary: You're helping David with a project, when suddenly General Kirigan decides to give you another one. You give it your all, wanting to prove yourself and that the Darkling wasn't wrong to give you this task. But be careful not to lose your heart in your attempt to get to know the Black General.
Pairing: Aleksander Kirigan/Reader
Characters: Aleksander Kirigan, Reader, Fedyor Kaminsky, David Kostyk, Baghra Morozova
Word Count: 4262

First, you hear footsteps. Then, voices. You pay them no mind, too focused on your task. You also ignore the sound of clearing of one's throat. What finally gets your attention, is someone positioning themselves in front of you. And only because they're blocking the light.
You raise your head and meet a smile of a Heartrender. Fabian? Felix? Fedyor. That's right. But he's not the one blocking the sun. The person next to him is and he could do it without positioning himself in front of the window. He could do it from the end of the room if he wanted to.
'General,' you greet him politely and you glance at Fedyor again. 'Fedyor.'
'Good afternoon, [Y/N],' the Heartrender says, still smiling. He often smiles. You like that about him.
'Where's David?' General Kirigan asks. He, on the other hand, never smiles. Actually, you don't think you ever saw him smiling. Not that you spend much time with him. You circle completely different orbits. How could you not? You're a mere Durast, while he is the Shadow Summoner and the General of the Second Army.
'In the infirmary,' you answer calmly and return to your work. You miss the frowns on General and Fedyor's faces.
'In the infirmary?' the Heartrender repeats.
'Mhm,' you hum. 'Again.'
'He often ends up there?' General asks.
'Quite,' you confirm. 'But still, he's improving. It's only his third visit today.'
Fedyor's eyes widen, while General closes his. But you don't see it, still engrossed with your work.
'He went there a while ago, though, so he should be back soon,' you say. 'If it's urgent.'
'That depends whether creating some sort of light that could help us cross the Fold without attracting Volcras is urgent in your opinion,' General says, his voice emotionless.
'Ah, that,' you say. 'That's actually why he ended up there. Again. So, don't worry, he's working on it. Well, we are.'
You look up, giving the men a pointed look. General moves to the side a bit after a moment, after understanding that's what you're working on and they're actually interrupting you.
'Sorry,' Fedyor says, sending you a sheepish smile. You shrug.
'It's fine,' you say. 'David only asked me yesterday for help. I'm still trying to understand what he's done so far. And why it's not working like it should. Or works as it shouldn't, like setting David eyebrows on fire.'
General's eyebrows shoot up. Fedyor snorts and marks it with a cough.
'Eyebrows,' Kirigan repeats.
'And eyelashes,' you add. 'For a moment we thought he lost eyes.'
You return to your work. But then someone else calls your name in a tone you know so well. You freeze and exhale slowly. You turn to the coming person with a small smile.
'Petro,' you greet the incoming Tidemaker. He sends you a charming smile. He leans on the table and looks you over.
'[Y/N],' he says. 'You look very nice today. I love your-'
'What do you want?' you interrupt him. Petro freezes, then smiles sheepishly. He pulls out his dagger from his sheath. The dagger is bended in a weird angle. Fedyor tilts his head with a frown, wondering how he managed to do that with Grisha steel. Kirigan stares at it grimly, clearly not impressed.
'Again?' you ask, raising your eyebrows.
'Yeah… could you?' Petro asks, looking at you with puppy eyes. You extend your hand in answer. The Tidemaker hands you the dagger, beaming.
'Thanks, you're the best!' he says. You look the dagger over.
'Mhm,' you hum. 'Come back for it in an hour or so. I should have it-'
'Yeah, yeah, see you then!' Petro interrupts you, still grinning. He salutes to the General, finally seeming to notice him and walks away with a spring in his step.
'I truly don't know what ladies see in him,' Fedyor says. 'He's just so… bleugh.'
You don't answer him, focused on the dagger. The men watch as you grab the blade with your hand, while the other is grabbing the handle. You hum quietly and slowly the metal twists and bends. Merely a minute passes and the dagger looks like new. You nod, satisfied, and put it on the edge of the table. You return to your work, while men give you blank stares.
'Why did you tell him to come back in an hour?' Fedyor can't help but ask.
'Because that's the third time this week, he can wait for it,' you answer. You think you hear a snicker coming from General's lips, but you're sure it's just your imagination.
'And here I thought you're a good, quiet Durast,' Fedyor chuckles.
'Oh, Fedyor,' you say, glancing up at him. 'Never underestimate the quiet people.'
The Heartrender shivers at the look in your eyes. He stares at you, a bit disturbed, but you return to your work. You don't even notice the way General gazes at you. Like you're an interesting puzzle that needs to be solved.
Just then David enters the workshop. He looks a bit ruffled, but seems fine. He has a look of deep concentration on his face, so you know everything's alright with him.
'General,' he says, surprised, stopping, once he notices who's in the room.
'Mr Kostyk, I'm glad you could join us,' General says, putting his hands behind his back. 'I hope you're alright?'
'Um… yes, I'm fine, thank you, General,' David says and walks slowly to you.
'And?' you ask. He gives you a confused look.
'What did we learn today?' you clarify.
'Oh,' David says. 'Not to lean too much over the fire we don't know how works.'
'We don't lean too much over any fire, but that kind especially, yes,' you say. That's when you turn off, completely focusing on your task, since David is here to answer all of General's questions.
The Durast tries his best to explain his progress. But he's standing in front of the fearsome Darkling, so he's nervous. His arms are all over the place. He ends up turning over things on the table. The effect? The dagger on it falls from the table… straight on General's foot. But at the last moment it stops in the air.
Fedyor and General stare at it, surprised. They look up and see David's pale face turned toward you. You, who's holding a piece of paper in one hand, reading it, and have the other one extended toward the dagger. They watch how you move your hand and the blade follows its movements, to finally land back on the table.
'David, I don't think the General fancies the journey to the infirmary,' you comment casually and put down the piece of paper.
'I… I am so sorry, General,' David apologises, flustered.
'It's alright, Mr Kostyk,' Kirigan says, his eyes focused on you. 'Miss [L/N].'
'Hm?' you hum, looking at him with an absent-mind expression.
'I know Mr Kostyk said you're valuable to his work, but I have a different task for you,' General says and you raise your eyebrows at him. 'I was thinking about creating lighter and faster skiffs. And something tells me you're the right Durast for the job.'
You frown, already calculating how would that be possible. Something sparks in your eyes.
'Yeah, I can do that,' you nod. 'No problem, General.'
'I know you won't disappoint me,' Kirigan says and looks at David. 'Neither of you.'
Your friend gulps and bows his head. He elbows you and you do the same. General glances at you one last time and leaves with Fedyor.
'Why did you give her that task out of the blue, sir?' the Heartrender asks, curious.
'That paper in her hand was completely blocking her the sight of the dagger,' General says. 'And yet she stopped it. Without even seeing it's falling. Which proves that she was right and it's better not to underestimate her.'
'How so?' Fedyor asks. General's lips twitch upward.
'Because the silent ones are the most observant ones,' he answers. 'And that also makes me believe she's the right person to be able to make our skiffs faster and lighter.'
He speeds up. Fedyor quickly follows him, lost in thought. They don't speak to each other until they reach the General's chambers.
*
Next time Kirigan sees you, is while you're already working on the skiff with other Durasts and Alkemi. He's pleased to see that the work is going well. He is, though, confused by you.
When he saw you in the workshop, focused on your work, almost alone, you were a completely different person than you are when you are surrounded by other Grisha. People ask you for help almost all the time and you help them with a smile on your face. You're the one responsible for the project, but almost every time you suggest something and someone dismisses the idea, you don't push and you seem to close in yourself.
When the work is done for the day, everyone leaves but you. Kirigan is about to go as well but something stops him. He observes you. The moment others are gone, smile disappears from your face. For the whole time General's been here, he was trying to figure out what was bothering him so much about your behaviour. Now he knows. Your eyes. Your mouth was smiling, but not your eyes. He can see it now, when your lips are turned downward.
He walks out of the shadows and walks slowly to you. You only notice him when he's right next to you. You jump, startled. Seeing it's him, you put a hand on your chest and force yet another smile.
'General,' you greet him. 'I'm sorry, you scared me.'
Kirigan stares at you. You tilt your head, confused.
'Miss [L/N], are you alright?' the man asks.
'I'm fine,' you answer after a moment, turning your face from him. You try to focus on materials in front of you.
'You don't look fine,' Kirigan insists.
'Then stop looking,' you snap. You look at him, startled. He raises his eyebrows.
'I am so sorry, General,' you apologise. The man frowns, seeing how you seem to cower, becoming smaller than you are. It doesn't seem like the girl who told David off for almost hurting him and stopped the dagger from hurting him even not looking at it.
'I think I'm just tired', you try to excuse yourself, looking away from him again. 'It's been a long day and we had some problems. I swear it won't happen-'
'Do not pretend that you are some meek, pathetic little girl, when I can see that vicious mind working behind your eyes,' Kirigan interrupts you harshly. You flinch and look at him with surprise. He stares at you coldly. He doesn't even know why he's so annoyed by your change in behaviour. It frustrates him.
'Sir?' you ask, confused. He clears his throat.
'I've watched you today,' he says and is even more surprised. 'How is it, that when I last saw you, you told a boy to wait for his dagger and today you were doing everything people asked of you at once, often stopping your own work?'
You stare at him in silence. You don't say a word, still don't act like when he saw you that day. However, something changes in your eyes. Something that he saw then and couldn't quite place it. But now he knows. He sees it every day in his eyes.
'You're full of anger,' he says. He reaches out to you and puts a loose strand of hair behind your ear. It makes you shiver.
'Why?' he asks. You don't answer. You stare at him blankly. He doesn't push. After a moment he allows his hand to drop and turns to walk away. He takes a few steps-
'I am angry because of my father,' you speak up. Kirigan stops. He smiles. There.
'I can hold a grudge like it's a hand,' you say. General turns. He raises his eyebrows.
'Your father,' he repeats. He crosses his arms. The look in his eyes tells you he waits for more. To be honest, you don't know why you told him that at all. But there's no turning back now, is there?
'He's not a good person,' you say slowly. 'I think… he hated me for not being a boy. He definitely let me felt that. I don't think I ever saw him in a good mood.'
'What about your mother?' General asks. You smile against your will.
'She was trying to always ease his anger,' you say. 'I always admired that in her. She was smiling and helping others, even when she was sad, scared or tired.'
'And you're trying to do the same thing,' Kirigan understands. You nod.
'I have my mother's joy and my father's anger in me,' you say. 'They're always at war.'
'You're angry because you believe your father didn't love you?' Aleksander asks. 'I'm sure that's not true.'
That's a lie, obviously. He's seen many parents beating their children for the smallest things. And doing other things to them. But he wants you to say more and he knows this will. The look you give him, tells him he's right.
'The moment my he realised I'm a Grisha, he grabbed me, took me to the Little Palace and demanded a really fancy price for me,' you say, your voice void of any emotions. 'He didn't even let me say goodbye to my mother.'
Kirigan stares at you in silence, not sure what to say. You smile sadly at him.
'So, I think it's safe to say I have a father, but I never had a dad,' you say and shake your head after a moment. 'I don't even know why I'm telling you all this. Sir. Or why do you care…'
You give him a curious but also a wary look. General clasps his hands behind his back. The usual 'mask' is on his face.
'It's my duty to care about Grisha under my care,' he says. 'Make sure they're well.'
You hum, your eyes not leaving his face. You tilt your head. There's something in your look… a question.
'What is it?' Kirigan asks.
'What about your father?' you blurt out. 'What was he like? The former Darkling?'
'I never knew him,' General says after a long pause slowly. 'I grew up outside the Little Palace, away from him. Safety reasons.'
'Right, yes, of course,' you say, nodding. 'And… your mother?'
He tenses. He looks away. His lips press into a thin line.
'She loves me in some way,' he answers after a moment wistfully.
'She's alive?' you ask.
'Yes,' that's all he answers.
'It must have been hard,' you say.
'Lonely, mostly,' General says before he can stop himself. You nod and look down.
'Loneliness can be the worst kind of torture,' you say quietly. Kirigan looks at you, stunned, but you don't see it. He opens his mouth but then closes them again. You look up at him and force another smile on your face.
'I should finish this up and retire to bed,' you say and bow respectfully to him. 'General.'
'Goodnight, Miss [L/N],' he says, nodding.
'Goodnight, General,' you respond. Kirigan stares at you for a moment longer, then turns and leaves. He stops behind a corner. He clenches his fists. He won't. He won't. He won't. But he does. He turns and peeks from behind the wall.
You're standing where he left you, carefully putting things away. There's that sad look on your face again. It stirs something in Kirigan. He doesn't know what. But he doesn't like it. Nor the need to find a reason for you to be happy.
*
Are you surprised the materials you figure out you need are far away from Os Alta? No. Do you insist you need to get them yourself to properly inspect them? Yes. Coincidentally, General Kirigan is heading to a town nearby, because that's where one of your regiments is stationed. So, you and few other Grisha are riding there with the Darkling himself.
You visit the regiment first. You walk around with curiosity, as you've never been this close to war. You decide you don't necessarily want to be. You're glad when you leave that town and head to the one with your supplies. You don't stay long there. You quickly find what you need, inspect it and argue about the price. Satisfied, you head home.
At some point you take a break in a forest. After a discussion you decide to stay for the night. Kirigan leaves setting up the camp to others and goes for a reconnaissance. You never know where you can meet Fjerdan or Shu-Han's spies. And sure enough, he finds one.
The Fjerdan panics at the sight of the Darlking himself and falls from the tree he was hiding on. It catches Kirigan off guard, so he has to duck, as the Fjerdan uses the moment of confusion to fire a gun at him. He cries and throws himself at General. There's a short struggle and a moment later Kirigan throws the dead body from his own. He huffs and stands up.
He hears a sound of a gun clicking behind him. He tenses. He expects the other man to fire… but instead of gunshots he hears gurgles. He frowns and turns swiftly, ready to use the Cut. He's surprised to see the man tense and… wriggling in place? A moment later he falls on the ground, unconscious, revealing you with your hands brought together.
'How did you…?' General asks after a moment, shocked. You let your hands drop.
'Durasts can do more things than just create things, you know,' you say, raising an eyebrow. 'We can manipulate anything that's solid. Like metals. And one of metals is iron. Which is an important part of blood that flows in our veins.'
'So… you manipulated the iron in his body?' Kirigan slowly says, astonished, glancing at the man at your feet. 'How did you discover you can do that?'
'Focus, girl,' Baghra's voice rings in your ears. 'Focus on every bit of metal in this house. What can you feel?'
'Steel… bronze… copper… brass…' your younger self said on that day during your lesson with the old woman, '… silver… iron… Lots and lots of iron.'
'Iron,' Baghra repeated, frowning. Which you couldn't see, because your eyes were closed.
'Focus on iron,' the woman said, curious. 'Try to call it to you.'
You nodded again and exhaled slowly. You brought your hands together and concentrated on iron. For a moment there's nothing. Then you heard Baghra's surprised gasp and groan.
'S-stop!' she barked, her voice strained. You quickly dropped your hands and opened your eyes. The woman was breathing heavily and clutching her stomach. She looked up at you, surprised… and impressed? No, can't be. Not Baghra.
'You can control iron in human's body,' she said. 'Not many Durasts can do that…'
You blush, still embarrassed that you almost caused Baghra to bleed, because you called to yourself iron in her blood cells. You clear your throat and look away.
'During one lesson with Baghra,' you answer General's question. 'I sensed iron in her house and she told me to call it to me. We had no idea I was sensing the iron in our bodies. I… may have… almost do to her what I did to that Fjerdan.'
Oh, how Kirigan would love to see that. See Baghra surprised and gasping for breath. Almost killed by a hand of a Durast still in training.
'Impressive,' General says. He wants to say more, but then other Grisha run from behind the trees, calling him. They separate you two, asking if he's alright and checking the state of the two spies. The alive one is taken as a hostage to interrogate. They dispose of the body of the other one and you all return to the camp. General doesn't see or talk to you again that night.
In fact, the next time he has a chance to talk to you is on the day you return to the Little Palace. Or rather, later at night. He's just finished a rather frustrating meeting and goes to the kitchen to grab something to eat as a late supper. Or maybe early breakfast. However, what he sees inside the kitchen, causes him to stop dead in his tracks.
'[Y/N]?' he asks, surprised. 'It's four a.m., why are you baking a cake? And what's with the party decorations and sweets?'
He stares at you, standing in front of a table and spreading a cream on the sponge cake. Like he said, there are party decorations in the room and more sweet things to eat. You lick the spoon in your hand and look at him calmly.
'I'm celebrating the death of my sleep schedule and sanity,' you answer and reach into a bowl with cookies, then offer one to him. 'Want a cookie?'
General is silent for a moment, trying to understand this bizarre situation. Finally, he sighs and sits down opposite to you.
'Might as well,' he answers and takes the offered cookie. You nod at him and return to your task. He watches you as you do that.
'It calms me down,' you explain. 'Baking. When I'm stressed or angry. Or both.'
'Is it my doing?' General asks. 'The task I asked you to complete?'
'No,' you deny, shaking your head, but then think. 'Well, yes and no. It's because I'm a perfectionist. Everything I do has to be perfect. And when it isn't, when something is not going how I want, I get frustrated. So, I bake. And today I understood that this task is exciting, but also challenging… which I love, don't worry… so I'm going to sleep less. Hence, the little party.'
Kirigan stares at you. He hums and eats his cookie.
'I see,' he says and suddenly freezes, as if remembering something. 'I didn't thank you, did I? For saving my life.'
'I'm sure you'd have been fine,' you dismiss him, shrugging.
'Nevertheless, you saved my life,' General says. 'Thank you.'
'You're welcome,' you say, looking down, embarrassed. You finish your cake in silence. When it's done, you cut both of you a piece of it and you eat in silence. Until Kirigan asks:
'Why didn't you kill him?'
'I've never killed before,' you answer after a moment of careful consideration. 'It's not something I want to do. One of the many reasons I'm glad I'm a Durast, not a Heartrender.'
General doesn't say anything to that. You continue to eat the cake in silence. Then, you stand up and slowly start cleaning up. Clearly, you're dragging out the moment of going to sleep.
'I'm starting to think you're a masochist,' Kirigan says, a bit amused.
'Look who's talking,' you say, not looking at him. He freezes.
'What do you mean?' he asks, his voice a bit hard. You carefully think about your answer.
'When you told me about your parents… I saw something in your eyes,' you say finally. 'I couldn't understand it for some time. Until I looked in the mirror and saw the haunting look I always have whenever I think of my time before I came to the Little Palace.'
You turn to look at him. He stares at you coldly. It doesn't faze you.
'Something happened to you when you were younger,' you say. 'And it haunts your soul, hurting you… maybe even destroying you.'
'I'm fine,' Kirigan says harshly after a moment. 'I don't need any… help.'
'You don't need… or you don't want it?' you ask and look away. 'Sometimes we don't want to heal, because the pain is the last link to what we've lost.'
Suddenly, you're slammed against the wall, your wrists pinned on the sides of your head. You look with surprise, and a bit of fear, at General's angry face hovering above yours.
'Don't ever try to get inside my head,' he snarls. For several beats you stay there, his grip crushing your wrists. Finally, his dark eyes soften.
'It's too dark for you,' he says and lets go of you. He turns and walks away, watched by you.
'Goodnight,' he calls over his shoulder. He's almost at the door, when you blurt out:
'Show me your thorns and I'll show you hands ready to bleed.'
He freezes. Your heart is beating fast. You have no idea why you said that. But when he turns his head to look at you with surprise, he meets your determined gaze. Because something draws you to him. Maybe because your past is similar. Maybe because you're both lonely. But you know one thing. You don't want him to be in pain.
General frowns at you. He opens his mouth, but not a word comes out. He turns and walks away briskly. You stand in place for a moment. Then, you finish cleaning up and go to sleep.
In the morning you find an envelope under your door. Curious, you pick it up. It's black and is addressed to you in a familiar writing. You take out a note and read it. It says:
Something must be done about your rest schedule. I don't want the Durast responsible for building my new skiffs falling dead from exhaustion. From now on, I expect you in my chambers at seventeen for a cup of tea. No arguing. No excuses. You're to be there.
Sincerely,
General Kirigan
You smile.
