Undying Tales Project Day 16: An Asiatic canid called the dhole. Once again, I didn't add any elements of the lore and just illustrated this endangered animal. The references I took this from are more from the Indian subspecies rather than the fluffier Chinese or Tibetan species. I'm not sure I did a great job of depicting this particular type of canid rather than a more generic canid. Listening to him talk was like heaven, but at the same time it was hell. He just looked so huggable.

His words trailed off again and he stared at you. "You keep being weird. You're all red. Did I say something wrong? I know that sometimes I speak for too long and I go on and on, which annoys people-" He sighed, "And I'm doing it now. I'm sorry."

"No, please. I love when you talk. It's calming." Grinning, you continued, "So what about protection?"

"Oh, um…manes can also protect their neck and head from injuries during a fight." He slowed down his speaking, like he was a little self-conscious about his words now. When he stopped talking everything was silent, except for the sound of the movie quietly playing on the TV in front of you.

"Spence? What's wrong?" Tilting your head and looking at him, he was staring at the TV but he didn't seem to be watching it. Just thinking, his eyebrows furrowed like they normally did while he was deep in thought. "What are you thinking about?"

"Have you been flirting with me?" He blurted out, looking back up and at you. You almost jumped, not expecting that question.

"What?" Still in shock it took you a minute to respond. Letting the silence fill the air again, he didn't speak. He just stared, waiting for an answer. "I-What would you think if I was?"

"I would've wished I'd noticed sooner." He sighed, making that puppy-dog face you loved. Neither of you really knew what to do and sat there for what you would believe could've been hours.

"Fuck it." You breathed out and as if he knew what you were thinking as well he leaned in at the same time as you, kissing you softly. After a couple seconds you felt his hands wrap around your face, holding it as he kissed more.

Your hands didn't know where to go, after a couple more seconds they finally found their place, one around the back of his neck and the other tucked around his waist. Pulling you closer to him.

A couple seconds later you both moved away from each other, only long enough to catch your breaths and muttering random words. Before you knew it the both of you were back to kissing, to make up for how long you guys spent not kissing.

The longer it went the closer to each other you got, his one hand started to slide down your neck and then your waist when suddenly your hand hit a button and the movie that was still playing turned up to full volume.

Both scrambling for the remote he managed to shut the TV off, surrounding you both in the darkness of the night.

The two of you continued to kiss every once in a while but it didn't take long for the darkness to make you both sleepy and you ended up just cuddling. You fell asleep with your head on his chest, listening to his heart beat. He had one hand holding you close to him, as if someone was coming to steal you away. The Asiatic lion in Mesopotamia symbolized the forces of chaos, which the king defeated in his role as a champion of order and civilization. Lions appear in works of art from the Early Dynastic Period through the time of the Neo-Assyrian Empire as a symbol of the ruler’s strength in defeating untamed forces that threatened stability.

Lions frequently attacked livestock on the Mesopotamian plains, threatened merchants traveling the roads, and killed herdsmen, shepherds, dogs, children, and others. They came, therefore, to symbolize the chaotic nature of the untamed world – the world thought to exist outside of the civilized and orderly realm of a given monarch – and so threats to that order needed to be neutralized.

Lion hunts, whether in the wild or staged in an arena or park, were reserved solely for the king. In Mesopotamian belief – whether Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, or Assyrian – humans were understood as co-workers with the gods. The gods had established order at the beginning of time, and it was up to the people to maintain it. The king, as the divinely appointed leader of his people, was expected to serve as a role model and the lion hunt, in which the lion represented the threat of chaos and destruction, provided him the opportunity to do so publicly.

Lions were depicted in statuary and reliefs to illustrate how the king had tamed the wild forces of nature – as in the lion reliefs from the walls of the Ishtar Gate of Babylon – as the lion in these works is no longer a dangerous menace roaming freely but has been caught by the king and held eternally. The king, then, took the power from the lion as his own, and so lions came to symbolize royal authority in maintaining order and supremacy over any threats to that order, in the same way that imagery associating the lion with a deity – such as Ishtar – would do. A statue or image of a lion assured the people that the king, anointed by the gods, was in control and would protect them from all dangers.

My thoughts of the new Minecraft wolf variants!

With the recent announcement of the new wolf variants, I wanted to give my two bits about what real life animal each of the variants are based on! (I study animal ecology so I get excited when animals are depicted in anywhere)

The Pale Wolf, Black Wolf, Snowy Wolf, Ashen Wolf, and Woods Wolf

All of these wolf variants are based on the Grey Wolf (Canis lupus), whether it be the typical Plains Wolf (Canis lupus nubilus), or a different subspecies. The Grey Wolf is the most common wolf species found on the world, typically lives in packs of 4-9 members, and typically has 5 accepted subspecies in the science community - but in total has over 30 subspecies (determining subspecies can be tricky).

The Pale Wolf is specifically meant to represent a Plains Wolf, as this design has been representing the Grey Wolf in Minecraft for at least 12 years. The Taiga biome is one of the biomes where Grey Wolves can be found, making it a great place to find Pale Wolves in Minecraft.

The Black Wolf is not a subspecies, but rather a color variant of the Gray Wolf. The black coloring of their coats is not typically caused by melanism, but rather is a normal gene found in Grey Wolves. One of the causes of wolves having a black coat is due to the black gene being linked to higher immunity to canine distemper, meaning the black wolves that survive the virus are able to reproduce and pass on their black genes. Does this mean distemper exists in Minecraft? Probably not, but that's up to your interpretation.

The Snowy Wolf is based on the Arctic Wolf (Canis lupus arctos). Artic wolves' white coats help them blend into the snow to help them hunt prey, and to hide them from potential predators.

The Ashen Wolf is likely based on the Eurasian Wolf (Canis lupus lupus). The Eurasian wolf can have similar coloring to the plains wolf, but has also been found with greyer coloring along its back, tail, and upper legs and face, and with white on its cheeks, underbelly and lower legs.

I think that the Woods Wolf is based on the Tibetan/Himalayan Wolf (Canis lupus chanco). It was a challenge to find what subspecies the woods wolf was based on because most wolves don't have the deep brown-orange coloring seen on the woods wolf, but the Tibetan/Himalayan wolf can often be seen with these colorings in the wild.

The Rusty Wolf

The Rusty Wolf is based on the Dhole (Cuon alpinus), also known as the Asiatic Wild Dog. Dholes have a rich tawny coat with a rich chocolatey tail. Unlike another popular red canine (the dingo), Dholes live in tropic forests, rainforests, and other habitats, making it an appropriate fit to be the jungle dwelling rusty wolf.

The Spotted Wolf

The Spotted Wolf is based on the African Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus), also known as the Painted Dog or the Cape Hunting Dog. This is variant is my favorite of the variants, and is one of my favorite canines of all time. African wild dogs live in savannah and grasslands biomes irl, and have beautiful coats ranging in different patterns of tawny, black, and white. I don't know if this is possible for Minecraft mechanics, but hopefully the spotted wolves will have different coat variants like their irl counterparts.

The Striped Wolf

The Striped Wolf is based on the Aardwolf (Proteles cristata), which is a species of hyena, making them felids instead of canids! (Yes, hyenas are more closely related to cats than dogs). Aardwolves can be found in semi-arid and open plains, making the badlands a good place to find them in-game. Fun fact! Aardwolves mainly eat termites/ants. Hopefully the striped wolf won't starve in a "bugless" game (rip fireflies).

The Chestnut Wolf

This one frustrates me. I couldn't find a canine or canine adjacent animal that had even a similar coat pattern. This is not a wolf. It is a dog. Probably a Norwegian Elkhound.

luke hemmings headcanons —❦ halloween

description: this is just a small collection of halloween things you’d do as a couple 🎃🧡

warnings: a few curse words, an illegal amount of fluff, a sexual hint. loosely written so might contain typos.

a/n: so this is my first headcanons post ever! hope you like it, and happy halloween to everyone who celebrates ❥ also, the cute little ghost dividers are by @silkholland & can be found here :)

decorating the house

i don't think you'd go overboard with the decorations, tbh. you'd decorate the house in some spider web and pumpkin decorations, some halloween lanterns on the patio. some orange and yellow candles across the house. you'd put up some pumpkin and ghost string lights in the entryway of your house, and a decorative skeleton leaning against the entryway wall. and you both would startle everytime you came home (losers ❥).

and you'd go to the florist to get some halloween-y colored flowers to put in your kitchen and the living room. you'd take forever choosing which bouquets are the best. "do you think this is better? what about this one? oh no, this is cute as well! luke??? are you listening?". his only concern would be that you'd be happy with the choice, even if he had a favorite of his own. but then you'd persist and you'd propose he'd pick one and you'd pick the other. you'd pick one for the kitchen with orange and red roses, orange asiatic lilies and dried leaves. luke'd go for different shade of orange with lilies, roses and carnations for the fireplace in your living room.

baking halloween treats

you’d bake something relatively easy or medium hard, not anything too complicated. you’d go for halloween cake pops, pumpkin cupcakes, caramel apples or spider web brownies for example. i don’t think gordon ramsay would be too impressed of your skills in the kitchen tbh (at least not luke’s, lmao). "luke you are not supposed to put that in yet! the dry ingredients are supposed to go in first". "are you serious?? oh my god have i ruined the whole thing? i definitely have, have i?". "we can fix it, lu. or at least i hope so". "i should not be allowed in the kitchen, jeez", he'd sigh dramatically and you'd giggle at his adorable reaction. "not if you can't read the instructions, baby", you'd kiss his cheek and later you'd offer some dough to him from your fingertips. "mmh, damn this is good though".

& you’d go to the nearest grocery store or bakery if you craved something you didn’t know how to make or were too scared to even attempt.

halloween movie night

yeah you've watched a few halloween movies on singular nights after work etc. together, but you both wanted to have a marathon night. you could go for harry potter, coraline, hocus pocus, nightmare before christmas, etc., the classics. and if you were feeling wild, you'd go for a scary movie first. "lu i'm scared", you'd hide behind a blanket. "c'mere", he'd offer you his embrace and kiss your forehead. he'd wrap his arms tightly around you, and your head would rest against his chest, your hand around his waist. "are you scared?", you'd ask him. "no". "then why's your leg shaking?". "...cause it's numb". "right...". you'd joke about possibly being plagued by nightmares the following night, and as an attempt to avoid that, you'd end the night with some sappy and cute halloween movie. you’d also eat the halloween treats you made earlier and drink apple cider etc., while watching the movies. your living room would be candle lit and the couch would be filled with blankets and pillows, so it’d be extra cozy and homey. and of course petunia would beg for food, and you'd give her the dog halloween treats you bought from the store. then the pupper would happily go to sleep and start snoring in her own bed 🥺

and at some point during the night you’d hear the doorbell ring. it’d be little kids trick or treating. you’d give them a lot of snacks and gush about how cute they were afterwards. you’d melt because you love seeing luke with children, he is so extra attentive and lovable. (maybe some day you’ll have a toddler of your own running around the house in the cutest costume ever 🥹💞).

carving pumpkins

you’d go to a pumpin patch together. you’d look for the perfect pumpkins, but they’d all be a bit off so you settle for some decent ones. (this would take at least 30 mins and then you both would get frustrated at the selection). you carve the pumpkins at home while listening to some halloween playlist. then you’d look at the final results. “this looks like shit��. “...look at mine” and somehow luke’s even worse. this would lead to a stupid amount of giggles. luke takes a picture of the carved pumpkins together and sends it to the boys whatsapp group. (they’d all think yours is better and luke would frown, following with a jokingful ”well fuckin’ obviously they think yours is better”.)

dressing up

there’s no way luke would not want to have matching costumes… yeah you’re that annoyingly cute couple at the party that arrives in painfully matching set of costumes. mike, cal and ash would totally make fun of you being clingy and predictable, but secretly think you two are adorable. you’d pick something you both like, ranging from cute to sexy to actually scary costumes. you could be dressed as each other too. you’d pick whatever you feel like that year. i feel like you could go for a barbie theme this year and you could help him with his makeup and apply glitter in his eyelids etc 🥹 "is this okay?", you'd confirm luke about the makeup and he'd take a look at himself in the mirror. "it's perfect, darling". "..do you know what else is perfect?". "huh?". "your incapability to know that you have a boner...". "well it's not my fault you are so sexy, is it?", he'd smirk and the comment would be followed by a hot make out session.

and of course petunia would be dressed up as something like a pokemon, pig or a ghost!! ”i don’t she likes it very much, luke”, you’d giggle. ”oh mama here thinks you don’t like your costume. don’t you like it tuney?”, luke babbles and petunia responds with a grunt and goes to her sleeping nook. you both giggle at her grumpy reaction and how cute she looks.

What are your favorite animals?

Ok so starting off we’ve got cheetahs. I’m already a cat person which is a good start. They’re pretty much built to be fats. Thin front legs, strong back legs, and a very lightweight body that allows them to be much more aerodynamic.

They are the only cat is the acinonyx genus, meaning that they can only partially reattach their claws! Their claws allow them to grip the ground easier while sprinting. But this leaves them unable to climb trees, like leopards and jaguars who bring their prey into trees with them to avoid their food being stolen.

They are also incredibly inbred. This is due to surviving two genetic bottleneck events. This basically means that the species was brought to near extinction, and then bred their way out of it. Having that happen twice, and now still having a decently low population makes them VERY INBRED, leaving nearly all cheetahs to be genetically related. SUPER FUCKED UP LITTLE GUYS.

There’s actually a critically endangered subspecies of cheetah known as the Asiatic cheetah. There are very few individuals left . :(

Next is African wild dogs. No particular reason why, I just think they’re pretty. They’re very social canines that are very successful pack hunters, killing their prey about %80 of the time.

Last animal im putting on this list is the Shoebill stork. Imagine this being the stork that delivers your babies, im using the least unsettling pics I can find because they even creep ME out lmao. They’re an African species of stork that are known for being Very Scary looking. They have incredibly sharp beaks that they use to hunt fish in the wetlands. Theyre fucking huge and I hate them with love.

This wasn’t exactly a list of my favorite animals but more of a list of ones I like. I do love cheetahs though they’re so fucked up ❤️ thank you for giving me an opportunity to yap. Feel free to correct anything I said btw because I am not a scientist, just a kid.

Rabbits or Hares

(Rabbits were introduced to China long after they were part of their mythology, only as the endemic Chinese Hare)

Any particular notes or reasons?

Rabbits have a few interesting characteristics biologically and mythological I can connect to these two. Rabbits are universally known as prey animals. Both Tachibana and Makoto are sought after by threatening parties the entirety of Y0. Rabbits, in other parts of the world, are associated with being timid (if not overly cautious.) This comes with the territory of being prey animals. These attributes are also fitting for these two siblings. Watership Down, a western (British) novel published in 1972, features the harrowing adventures of a group of rabbits trying to find a safe home. One (abbreviated) proverb drawn from a tale they tell of their own origins is: "All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you." Not to mention, in Japan - much like cats and dogs in the west - rabbits and dogs (the species I most use to represent members of the Tojo) are mortal enemies. A final reason that I chose rabbits for them is because of a particular tale in Buddhist religion. See: The Rabbit on the Moon. I feel like it fits Tachibana well.

Kasuga Ichiban

Any particular notes or reasons?

Kai Ken are considered loyal dogs in Japan. They're also considered a rare breed - fitting for Ichiban, who is one-of-a-kind. Though they are eager to please, they are also described as "independent thinkers." And, even more important, "brave", despite being medium-sized dogs. (They're also considered intelligent. All these things seem to be an impossible concoction of personality traits. That is, before you meet Ichiban. (The Best Boy)

Seonhee is a force to be reckoned with! It's only fitting that she's represented by a rare, powerhouse of a creature. Definitely a creature that can keep at least 3 gangs in check. I also wanted the Geomijul to be primarily made of stealthy or sneaky animals, including ambush predators like felines. Tigers are one of a few wild cats in the Asiatic region. I wanted to choose a big one, though. Between leopards and tigers, tigers are more social, so I chose that one.

Any particular notes or reasons?

So, the animal I wanted had to be an absolute unit. I also wanted the animal to be from an area geologically close to striped hyena territory (around the India-ish area.) I feel like it's an interesting take to make his creature a domesticated one...what with being in jail in the beginning of his game and mostly resigned to his fate. I also wanted something close to an African/cape buffalo, one of my favorite animals. They're considered one of the five most deadly animals in Africa (if you're hunting them on foot.) The biggest reason they're in the same club as lions and leopards is because of their sense of altruism. (That, and, uh. A bulletproof skull.) Crocodiles, by the way, didn't make the cut. (If you're curious as to what I mean, I mean you cannot just fight one cape buffalo. You will inevitably be hunting the whole herd. These bovine will come running to herd members that are in distress. For any member, even the calves. And all the herd members join in. And what's worse, they hold grudges. They can recognize human faces. They can remember human faces.)

Birds, in the furry fandom, sometimes have an association with proud jerks, assholes, or glorious bastards. So, when I say Zhao (and Mabuchi, for that matter) has "bird energy", that's sort of what I mean.) All the birds in these options are also beautiful, which I'm sure, doesn't help beat the "convinced that he's better than you" allegations. Symbolism with these birds in particular also fit well; roosters are associated with favorability and successfulness. (Golden) pheasants are also associated with favorability/luck, as well as authority.

Any particular notes or reasons?

Well. Remember what I said about "bird energy" when I talked about Zhao? I feel like Jo's got bird energy. Look at it, it has red eyes?? Just mean, mean hateful looking bird. They also have loud calls, and I feel like that fits with him...being an angry foreman-type. Keeps the recruits in line. Interestingly enough, I see them described as "parasites" as well? Not sure what that's about, but Jo sure sucks the life out of a room if he's in it. ...Listen, I swear I put more thought into it. It's just something you notice about him in the story, best you play the game or watch a playthrough of "Like a Dragon" and check out his whole arc.

Hey, everyone, btw, do you think people who look into these interpretations know all the games, or at least play the whole game through before checking out fanon for that particular game? Can you spoil an old game? If someone checks out stuff before finishing a piece of media, is it on them if they find out something too early?

It's just been a thought I had in mind.

Any particular notes or reasons?

I wanted Haruka to be somewhat reminiscent of her mother in some way, so I made her an even-toed ungulate. (Spoiler alert: Yumi is a Sika Deer.) I also wanted her to have something that was "from" a carnivore, because Jingo is almost certainly going to be a predator. This can also be a "link" to Kiryu. So, Vampire Deer it is! Her animal also had to be something cute and/or cuddly, so it could emphasize how helpless and delicate she's seen as in the canon. I didn't really give it much more thought than that. There may be a day I change my mind on her species, but for now, I'm attached to a deer with fangs.
