Caps Birth Order (siblings, not age)
Okay Caps fam, I got a little bored the other day. And I was thinking about the van Riemsdyks, came to the realization that both TvR and Dylan Strome are middle children each with a hockey playing older and younger brother, and I started wondering how many oldest, middle, and youngest children were on this team. So I went and did the research myself. There’s always a chance I missed something and someone out there has a sibling I don’t know about, but this is all the information I could find, and it’s accurate to the best of my knowledge. Some of these check out with their vibes, and some may surprise you
Presenting: the oldest, youngest, and middle children on the Capitals
Oldest Siblings
Darcy Kuemper (1 brother, 1 sister)
Hendrix Lapierre (1 brother, 2 sisters)
Charlie Lindgren (2 brothers)
Aliaksei Protas (1 brother)
Middle Siblings
Martin Fehervary (1 older brother, 1 younger sister)
Max Pacioretty (1 older sister, 1 younger sister)
Dylan Strome (1 older brother, 1 younger brother)
Trevor van Riemsdyk (1 older brother, 1 younger brother)
Tom Wilson (1 older brother, 1 younger brother)
Youngest Siblings
Nicklas Backstrom (1 brother)
John Carlson (1 brother)
Nic Dowd (2 brothers)
Joel Edmundson (1 brother)
Lucas Johansen (1 brother)
Evgeny Kuznetsov (1 brother, rest in peace)
Anthony Mantha (1 sister)
Sonny Milano (1 sister)
Alex Ovechkin (2 brothers, rest in peace Sergei)
Rasmus Sandin (1 brother)
Unclear
Oldest/Middle - Connor McMichael - I found an old interview where he mentions having 2 younger brothers, 1 half-brother, and 1 half-sister. He doesn’t mention if the half-siblings are younger or older than him, so I cannot make a definitive confirmation. But I’d be willing to bet he’s the oldest child
Middle/Youngest - Nicolas Aube-Kubel - He has 2 sisters. One of them is definitely older than him, but I couldn’t figure out whether the other one was older or younger than him, so he’s either the middle or youngest child
TJ Oshie - He has 1 brother and 2 sisters. I could find absolutely zero information on their ages, so I have absolutely no clue where Teej goes in the order
No Info/Probably An Only Child
I found NO information about siblings of any kind for these guys, so either I missed something or they’re an only child
Alexander Alexeyev
Nick Jensen
Beck Malenstyn
Matthew Phillips
(If I missed something or you know additional relevant information or if I got something wrong, please let me know. I welcome all info, and I desperately wanna know where in the birth order Teej is because it’s killing me)
#as an oldest child the number of youngest children on this team was a bit astounding#and shoutout to patches and mantha and milano and NAK for having older sisters#feel free to tell me your feelings about this info in the tags lol I enjoy reading them#washington capitals#darcy kuemper#hendrix lapierre#charlie lindgren#aliaksei protas#martin fehervary#max pacioretty#dylan strome#trevor van riemsdyk#tom wilson#nicklas backstrom#john carlson#nic dowd#joel edmundson#lucas johansen#evgeny kuznetsov#anthony mantha#sonny milano#alex ovechkin#rasmus sandin#connor mcmichael#nicolas aube-kubel#tj oshie#alexander alexeyev#nick jensen#beck malenstyn#matthew phillips

just a heads up that my winter promotion will be ending in two days. you can learn more about the winter discount here. the cut off for the pwyw will be based on the timestamp date when the commission form was sent in, not when i accept it since there will likely be a delay in response on new year's eve.
the 31st is also the last day to get in giveaway entries for anyone who has commissioned from me & have yet to fill out the form.
how the giveaway will go: jan 1-3 will be me double checking entries & responding to any mistakes/changes (if there are any). on the 4th, when the list is finalized, i will first put the entries into this list randomizer so repeat entries will be mixed around a bit. then i will use a randomizer to pick three. this is the randomizer i'll be using because it seems to be the most ~random~ after testing out a few different ones.
once again, a big thank you to everyone & happy new year!!
below the cut is all the entries i have received. if there are any mistakes please let me know asap! ( x# means number of entries for that pack )

New monthly reads style courtesy of StoryGraph's new monthly cover collage feature!
June was a great reading month with lots of new releases. Rebecca Roanhorse gave my girl Xiala a satisfying ending in the final book in the Between Earth and Sky trio. The last book in the great Lost in Austin series by Christina Berry featured a Mr. Lifto-type MMC (shoutout to Jim Rose Circus-IYKYK). Cat Sebastian knocked it out of the park with You Should Be So Lucky (see what I did there). I knew I had to read Cyn after reading Ibrahim's Bluesky post about how he wrote it at a difficult time in his life (also addressed in this interview here). I enjoyed almost everything but other standouts were The American Daughters, The Mistress Experience, Preferential Treatment, and Triple Sec. Everything was from Hoopla or Libby except for All the Rest, Preferential Treatment, and Cold Hearted, which were KU. Here's everything in chronological reading order:
Capture the Sun (Starlight's Shadow #3) - Jessie Mihalik
Triple Sec - TJ Alexander
Mirrored Heavens ( Between Earth and Sky #3) - Rebecca Roanhorse* **
All the Rest (Lost in Austin #4) - Christina Berry*
You Should Be So Lucky (We Could Be So Good #2) - Cat Sebastian
Nails and Eyes - Kaori Fujino* **
Paladin's Faith (The Saint of Steel #4) - T. Kingfisher
Cyn - Ibrahim Moustafa*
The American Daughters - Maurice Carlos Ruffin* **
Salt in the Wound (Lyoness #0.5) - Sierra Simone
Preferential Treatment (Indecent Proposals #2) - Heather Guerre
Cold Hearted (Tooth & Claw #1) - Heather Guerre

Hello! I love your blog and find it very informative! Could you write something about AH relationship with James Monroe?
A lovely early friendship torn apart by political rivalry and misunderstandings that descended into harsh accusations, duel invitations, and never-ending Hamilton family hatred for the man? You can read the letters between them that Founders has here. I am unaware of AH ever discussing his opinion on Monroe in greater depth than what I’ve quoted below, and I’m completely unaware if Monroe ever offered a lengthy opinion on AH personally. There’s a new Monroe biography out (James Monroe: A Life by Tim McGrath) that may be more interesting than anything I write about.
But I’ll try. Things must have started out okay between them. They were both at the Battle of Trenton (Monroe was wounded). Monroe then served as aide-de-camp to William Alexander, Lord Stirling, whose brother-in-law was AH supporter William Livingston and daughter was Catherine Alexander, who would marry AH Treasury right-hand-man William Duer. They spent time at Valley Forge together, they both became good friends with Lafayette, etc. AH wrote positively of Monroe in 1779 to John Laurens:
Monroe is just setting out from Head Quarters and proposes to go in quest of adventures to the Southward. He seems to be as much of a night errant as your worship; but as he is an honest fellow, I shall be glad he may find some employment, that will enable him to get knocked in the head in an honorable way. He will relish your black scheme if any thing handsome can be done for him in that line. You know him to be a man of honor a sensible man and a soldier. This makes it unnecessary to me to say any thing to interest your friendship for him. You love your country too and he has zeal and capacity to serve it. 22May1779
With notes of recommendation from Hamilton, Lord Stirling, and Washington, Monroe became a lt. col, but with no field command available (AH certainly sympathized), he decided to resume his studies instead of continuing with the Army. He went on to become a member of the Continental Congress, etc.
In Feb 1786, Monroe (age 27) married Elizabeth Kortright at Trinity Church NY, with Rev. Benjamin Moore presiding (see here for my notes about the Hamiltons’ church affiliation). The Hamiltons may have attended; EH gave birth to Alex Jr. three months later. Elizabeth was the niece of Cornelius Kortright, who was a frequent business partner of Nicolas Cruger, AH’s old boss on St. Croix (AH worked for Kortright & Cruger 1769-1771). So Monroe - as did many others - likely had knowledge of AH’s personal background (and despite the current narrative surrounding AH, at the time almost no one seemed to care or consider AH’s background especially noteworthy; AH also freely introduced his cousins to friends, so it’s not at all clear that he ever thought he had something to hide and offered up the “blemish” of his parents’ relationship/his illegitimacy to several people).
But Monroe was a friend of Jefferson and Madison and ended up on their side politically (Monroe preceded Madison as an anti-federalist). His position in the Senate, and his authorship of articles in response to AH’s articles (written under several pseudonyms) all certainly aggravated AH.
And then there was the matter of Gouverneur Morris. In 1792, Monroe was one of the people trying to block the appointment of G. Morris as U.S. Minister Plenipotentiary to France. (Read an account of Morris’ actions in France/England here and enjoy the pettiness of his leaving Thomas Paine in jail.) In 1794, Monroe replaced Morris as Minister to France (1794 to 1796). He opposed AH as Minister to Great Britain (x) and his reasons are pretty sound and fair-minded (John Jay famously got the position and a treaty named after himself). Monroe was replaced in June 1796, both for anonymously publishing letters criticizing Washington and just not doing as the Federalists wanted, and replaced by Pinckney. Of course, AH played a part behind the scenes in encouraging his replacement and choosing Pinckney.
So by the 1790s they are political rivals, with Monroe writing in defense of Jefferson and Monroe blocking the appointment of AH’s friends/allies and AH interfering with Monroe’s business and encouraging his removal.
But in 1797, things got really personal. Rewinding to Dec 1792, Monroe was contacted by a jailed James Reynolds, who offered information about acting as AH’s agent/partner for speculation on gov’t securities. (Why Reynolds was in jail is a great deal more complicated than this, but I’m skipping all that.) Monroe investigated, got others involved, got the disclosure from AH himself that the money was actually because of blackmail over an affair with Maria Reynolds and produced letters showing this and gave letters and asked for copies of theirs, etc. (I think this part has been written about a lot, so I’m not going to go into further details). Five years later, the following was AH’s recollection of the matter (written to Muhlenberg and Monroe, 17July1797):
It is very true, that after the full and unqualified expressions which came from you together with Mr Venable, differing in terms but agreeing in substance, of your entire satisfaction with the explanation I had given, and that there was nothing in the affair of the nature suggested; accompanied with expressions of regret at the trouble and anxiety occasioned to me—and when (as I recollect it) some one of the Gentlemen expressed a hope that the manner of conducting the enquiry had appeared to me fair & liberal—I replied in substance, that though I had been displeased wtih the mode of introducing the subject to me (which you will remember I manifested at the time in very lively terms) yet that in other respects I was satisfied with and sensible to the candour with which I had been treated. And this was the sincere impression of my mind.
But actually, Monroe didn’t entirely believe AH’s account (”I hate you” point number 1) and conducted his own further interviews with Clingman and Maria Reynolds, which AH would only learn about in 1797 with the publication of pamphlet V of the History, but then Monroe pretty much left it alone, by his own account. He stated he sent all papers about this to a friend in Va (more on this below), and this is where the matter rested publicly for nearly five years.
But it’s not a real secret. By spring 1793, everyone in major political circles knows about it (and EH knew about it, it’s impossible for me to believe she didn’t). In under a week back in Dec 1792, Monroe, Wadsworth, Wolcott, Venable, Muhlenberg, Randolph, Webb, Beckley, and Jefferson all know, and Clingman talks freely. AH had permitted copies of letters to be made (and according to Monroe’s account, knew Beckley’s clerk had copied them), and on and on. BUT, no one is going to publish stuff about it - the confession of an extramarital affair would have been seen as a private family matter that would only serve to disturb “the peace of the family” - indeed, for AH naysayers then and historians since, claiming adultery was a convenient excuse if there was financial impropriety, because the matter wouldn’t be vigorously pursued further. (Philadelphia was a huge city for prostitution, and no one wanted the private sexual escapades of famous men broadcast to the world.) AH, I’m sure, knew everyone knew too, but worked from an understanding that no one was going to try to score political points on something that would expose his wife to public ridicule. But even though it was private, it was still Great Gossip! If AH was willing to taunt TJ publicly about Sally Hemings and, according to TJ, privately about his sexual pursuit/harassment 30 years ago of Elizabeth Moore Walker (wife of one of TJ’s best friend), and J. Adams is still repeating crazy gossip about AH 30 years later, you better believe there were references made to this affair at parties, gatherings, etc. EH dealt with it however she dealt with it, and I hope that AH’s “I have paid pretty severely for the folly” confession refers to some harsh treatment by EH.
And then in June 1797 Callendar began publishing pamphlets (lost to history except where AH quotes them in the Reynolds Pamphlet), some of which were gathered in some unknown order in his The History of the United States for 1796. Remember that Monroe was recalled from France in July 1796. It seemed to be a persistent belief of the Hamilton family that Monroe authorized and perhaps himself gave copies of the letters to Callendar for publication (”I hate you” point number 2).
And to be clear, because this gets muddled in some historian’s accounts - Callendar publishes AH’s account of his “particular connection” to Maria Reynolds and continues to goad him about it in published pamphlets and letters throughout June and July 1797 (the “harassment” of AH on this point in vague terms in pamphlets and newspaper letters actually started at least as early as 1795). AH’s confession in his own pamphlet was not an out-of-the-blue revelation of an affair that hadn’t already been publicly revealed.
Why would Monroe do this, in the Hamilton mind? Because he was pissed about no longer being French minister and blamed AH - he took a political dispute and decided to drag the Hamilton family into it. His delay in responding to AH, however, was likely seen as some kind of admission of guilt. On 5July1797, AH wrote to Monroe:
[Quoting from pamphlet V of the History] “When some of the Papers which are now to be laid before the world were submitted to the Secretary; when he was informed that they were to be communicated to President Washington, he entreated in the most anxious tone of deprecation, that the measure might be suspended. Mr Monroe was one of the three Gentlemen who agreed to this delay. They gave their consent to it on his express promise of a guarded behaviour in future, and because he attached to the suppression of these papers a mysterious degree of solicitude which they feeling no personal resentment against the Individual, were unwilling to augment” (Page 204 & 205). It is also suggested (Page 206) that I made “a volunteer acknowledgement of Seduction” and it must be understood from the context that this acknowlegement was made to the same three Gentlemen.
The peculiar nature of this transaction renders it impossible that you should not recollect it in all its parts and that your own declarations to me at the time contradicts absolutely the construction which the Editor of the Pamphlet puts upon the affair.
I think myself entitled to ask from your candour and justice a declaration equivalent to that which was made me at the time in the presence of Mr Wolcott by yourself and the two other Gentlemen, accompanied by a contradiction of the Representations in the comments cited above. And I shall rely upon your delicacy that the manner of doing it will be such as one Gentleman has a right to expect from another—especially as you must be sensible that the present appearance of the Papers is contrary to the course which was understood between us to be proper and includes a dishonourable infidelity somewhere.
And AH went ahead and wrote the following to editor John Fenno defending himself (6July1797):
For this purpose recourse was had to Messrs James Monroe, Senator, Frederick A. Muhlenbergh, Speaker, and Abraham Venable, a Member of the House of Representatives, two of these gentlemen my known political opponents. A full explanation took place between them and myself in the presence of Oliver Wolcott, jun. Esq. the present Secretary of the Treasury, in which by written documents I convinced them of the falshood of the accusation. They declared themselves perfectly satisfied with the explanation, and expressed their regret at the necessity which had been occasioned to me of making it.
But Monroe had just returned from France in June 1797, and he denied any prior knowledge of Callendar’s publication, and in general seemed to have had a “WTF!” reaction to AH’s sudden accusations. According to David Gelston’s account of the meeting between AH and Monroe on 11July1797:
Colo. M then began with declaring it was merely accidental his knowing any thing about the business at first he had been informed that one Reynolds from Virginia was in Gaol, he called merely to aid a man that might be in distress, but found it was a Reynolds from NYork and observed that after the meeting alluded to at Philada he sealed up his copy of the papers mentioned and sent or delivered them to his Friend in Virginia—he had no intention of publishing them & declared upon his honor that he knew nothing of their publication until he arrived in Philada from Europe and was sorry to find they were published. (my emphasis)
AH was so agitated that this conversation went downhill from there, seeing that “[AH] expected an immediate answer to so important a subject in which his character the peace & reputation of his Family were so deeply interested.” And then (”I hate you” point number 3):
Colo. M then proceeded upon a history of the business printed in the pamphlets and said that the packet of papers before alluded to he yet believed remained sealed with his friend in Virginia and after getting through Colo. H. said this as your representation is totally false (as nearly as I recollect the expression) upon which the Gentlemen both instantly rose Colo. M. rising first and saying do you say I represented falsely, you are a Scoundrel. Colo. H. said I will meet you like a Gentleman Colo. M Said I am ready get your pistols, both said we shall not or it will not be settled any other way. Mr C [John Church] & my self rising at the same moment put our selves between them Mr. C. repeating Gentlemen Gentlemen be moderate or some such word to appease them, we all sat down & the two Gentn, Colo. M. & Colo. H. soon got moderate, I observed however very clearly to my mind that Colo. H. appeared extremely agitated & Colo. M. appeared soon to get quite cool and repeated his intire ignorance of the publication & his surprize to find it published, observing to Colo. H. if he would not be so warm & intemperate he would explain everything he Knew of the business & how it appeared to him.
Monroe called him a scoundrel to his face! (After having been called a liar.)
And THEN, Monroe refused to sign a document absolving AH of any accusations of financial speculation with Reynolds (”I hate you” point number 4).
If I cod. give a stronger certificate I wod. (tho’ indeed it seems unnecessary for this with that given jointly by Muhg. & myself seems sufficient) but in truth I have doubts upon the main point & wh. he rather increased than diminishd by his conversation when here & therefore can give no other.
The above was sent to Burr on 16Aug 1797. AH had already pled his case to Monroe:
“...there appears a design at all events to drive me to the necessity of a formal defence—while you know that the extreme delicacy of its nature might be very disagreeable to me. It is my opinion that as you have been the cause, no matter how, of the business appearing in a shape which gives it an adventitious importance, and this against the intent of a confidence reposed in you by me, as contrary to what was delicate and proper, you recorded Clingman’s testimony without my privity and thereby gave it countenance, as I had given you an explanation with which you was satisfied and which could leave no doubt upon a candid mind—it was incumbent upon you as a man of honor and sensibility to have come forward in a manner that would have shielded me completely from the unpleasant effects brought upon me by your agency. This you have not done.
On the contrary by the affected reference of the matter to a defence which I am to make, and by which you profess your opinion is to be decided—you imply that your suspicions are still alive. And as nothing appears to have shaken your original conviction but the wretched tale of Clingman, which you have thought fit to record, it follows that you are pleased to attach a degree of weight to that communication which cannot be accounted for on any fair principle. The result in my mind is that you have been and are actuated by motives towards me malignant and dishonorable; nor can I doubt that this will be the universal opinion when the publication of the whole affair which I am about to make shall be seen.” 22July1797
In his mind, AH then believed he had to make a full accounting of the whole Reynolds debacle, since this jackass Monroe wasn’t going to sign-off on a denial of the whole matter of financial speculation on government securities. And back to the Hamilton family ire - it seemed that Monroe was not going to stop them from being slandered and dragged by doing what they felt he had already done - agreed that AH did not engage in financial speculation with Reynolds. Because Monroe would not acquiesce on that one matter, the Reynolds Pamphlet with all its detailed glory/humiliation where AH had to lay out his whole case was published, at least in the spin that occurred in the Hamilton family mind. (I’ve already written about the Reynolds Pamphlet here and here and briefly here and addressed a question about AH and infidelity here.)
Who was this “friend in Va?” Some historians have written this was TJ, but there are letters from decades later that Madison was the person who received the original letters and copies that Monroe had re Reynolds investigation, and they remained unopened until Monroe returned to the U.S. in 1797:
I have always understood from Mr. Monroe, that when he left this country he deposited with you, his packet of papers, relating to the investigation into the conduct &c of Genl. Hamilton—which was never opened, until it was returned by you to him, after his mission had terminated, and after the developement of its contents had been made from an other quarter. It would be very gratifying to me, if you have any facts, within your immediate reach, respecting the matter,if you would cause them at a leisure moment, to be communicated to me—The subject to which I refer, was, as you no doubt know, one of great feeling & excitement subsequently between Genl. H. & Mr. M., arising from causes of which I am aware, & particularly from the impression made on Genl. H. or the declaration by him of the belief, that the contents of the papers referred to, were made public by Mr. M—The children of Genl. H. have always indulged a feeling on this subject towards Mr. M. which renders it desirable that all the evidence in the case should be procured by his family. It has occasionally been hinted to me, that in a proposed publication of the Life of Genl. H., the subject might be touched, and it is equally my duty, as it would be my inclination, under such circumstances to have it in my power to do full justice to the character & memory of Mr. M. on this, as on all other occasions, where either might even by implication be assailed—I feel great reluctance in troubling you on the subject, but a conviction that you will appreciate my motives, impels me to do so. Samuel L. Gouverneur to James Madison, 1Feb1833
S.L. Gouverneur was the son-in-law of James Monroe (married their daughter) and nephew of Elizabeth Kortright Monroe. (Yes, he married his first cousin.) From the draft of Madison’s response (Feb 1833, Founders does not have a copy of the letter sent, if it’s still in existence):
I can only therefore express my entire confidence that the part Mr. Monroe had in the investigation alluded to, was dictated by what he deemed a public duty; and that after the investigation he was incapable of any thing that wd. justify resentful feelings on the part of the family of General Hamilton.
Of the public disclosure of the matter of the investigation, other than that from the avowed source, I know nothing; except that it could not proceed from the packet of papers deposited with me by Mr. M., which was never opened until it was returned to him, after his Mission had terminated.
Back to the main topic: the Hamiltons clearly saw Monroe playing a decisive role in the whole thing. But who was actually responsible for passing copies of letters to Callendar? Monroe was sure it was Beckley, former House clerk:
You know I presume that Beckley published the papers in question. By his clerk they were copied for us. It was his clerk who carried a copy to H. who asked (as B. says) whether others were privy to the affr. The clerk replied that B. was, upon wh. H. desired him to tell B. he considered him bound not to disclose it. B. replied by the same clerk that he considered himself under no injunction whatever—that if H. had any thing to say to him it must be in writing. This from B.—most certain however it is that after our interviews with H. I requested B. to say nothing abt. it & keep it secret—& most certain it is that I never heard of it afterwards till my arrival when it was published. Monroe to A.Burr, 2Dec 1797, in a letter that may have never gotten to him (entrusted to TJ)
Others at the time also believed it to be Beckley, though one historian suspected Tench Coxe too. Why was this ever published? Well, Callendar wrote in the History that it was because of the treatment of Monroe:
Attacks on Mr. Monroe have been frequently repeated from the stock-holding presses. They are cowardly, because he is absent. They are unjust, because his conduct will bear the strictest enquiry. They are ungrateful, because he displayed, on an occasion that will be mentioned immediately, the greatest lenity to Mr. Alexander Hamilton, the prime mover of the federal party.
Theodore Sedgewick told Rufus King it was Beckley, too and provides another motivation:
The House of Representatives did not re-elect Mr. Beckley as their Clerk. This was resented not only by himself but the whole party, and they were rendered furious by it. To revenge, Beckley has been writing a pamphlet mentioned in the enclosed advertisement. The ‘authentic papers’ there mentioned are those of which you perfectly know the history [46ten interjects: haha, some secret. So if Sedgewick and King know, Troup knows, Ames knows, G. Morris knows, etc. AH’s affair with Reynolds and the investigation was never a secret with this crowd], formerly in the possession of Messrs. Monroe, Muhlenberg & Venable. The conduct is mean, base and infamous. It may destroy the peace of a respectable family, and so gratify the diabolical malice of a detestable faction, but I trust it cannot produce the intended effect of injuring the cause of government.
So William Jackson is the second for AH, Aaron Burr the second for Monroe, and this Monroe-AH duel possibility stretched into the Winter of 1798 (x, x), having picked up again in December 1797 (Monroe replaces Burr with Dawson). TJ was still writing to Monroe about it in February 1798.
What had Monroe been doing that late summer/fall instead or figuring out how to conduct his affair of honor with AH? After an illness in August, oh, writing his own book (or having TJ ghostwrite it, depending on your views of Monroe’s intelligence) entitled A View of the Conduct of the Executive, in the Foreign Affairs of the United States, Connected with the Mission to the French Republic, During the Years 1794, 5, & 6, criticizing G. Washington and the administration every which way (published in Phila. 21Dec1797). GW, as he liked to do, made responses in the margins of Monroe’s little book; this editorial comment is hilarious: “GW’s remarks on Monroe and his book, taken together, comprise the most extended, unremitting, and pointed use of taunts and jibes, sarcasm, and scathing criticism in all of his writings.” Read that here.
So in the Hamilton mind, not only was Monroe trying to score points against Hamilton (and dragging private family matters into it), but he was criticizing GW too (and thereby AH, since even in retirement he continued to run the GW and Adams administrations, practically)! (”I hate you” point number 5.) In the first half of 1798, Monroe’s work got a lot of attention, earning the ire (and vocal and written condemnations) of Pres. Adams, of Timothy Pickering, and of many other Federalists. Monroe went back to Va. and appeared to lick his wounds and feel sorry for himself, based on his letters to TJ. I think it’s reasonable to speculate that Monroe is the “dirty fellow” alluded to in Angelica S. Church’s June 1798 letter to EH when the latter traveled to Albany - it was most likely seen that Monroe was the cause, or at least could have stopped, all the pain/attention of the public disclosure of the Reynolds affair. I don’t know if AH and Monroe ever really interacted after this. Monroe became Gov of Va, and then replaced Rufus King in 1803 as Minister to G.B.
EH and the Hamilton kids never forgot, see recollection here re. EH. Or watch a dramatization here. That Monroe remained a political rival of the Federalists and AH’s friends/allies also certainly didn’t help (Monroe & Madison and G. Morris continue at each other for many years.) On basic facts, it doesn’t quite make sense to me - I don’t think Monroe was culpable in the sharing of information, and I think he was being as fair-minded as he felt he could be - but there may have been additional encounters/statements/whatevers known to these parties that are now lost to history. There may also be fun details in JCH’s volumes on his father.
(For giggles, see this attached clipping: "the passage [in the Reynolds Pamphlet] in which Hamilton owns and laments his fault is admirably written.”

Kaitlyn Alexander on the finale of the groundbreaking “Couple-ish” and what’s ahead
So, gang, the series finale of Couple-ish has played, and what an absolute ride it’s been! I got the chance to chat with writer & actor Kaitlyn Alexander about the series. I’m calling the interview “Two non-binary kids walk into a bar…” TJ Wiltshire: What’s been your favourite moment of season 2? On camera and behind the scenes? Kaitlyn Alexander: Ooo that’s a good question. It’s always hard to pick out favourite moments because I want to say, like, every single second I get to work on this show is my favourite. But, that’s totally avoiding the answer so… My favourite moment of season 2 on camera would’ve definitely been Episode 18. Premika (Leo) and I shot the entire scene after I closed the curtain and only did one take. I’ve never had a one take wonder scene and that was so so cool. Behind the scenes would probably have to be that entire Bar location shoot day. We had so many awesome people on set (including Elise Bauman, Annie Briggs and Aaron Chartrand), and everyone was just happy to be there and joking and having a blast. We also got to talk to some backers in person and it was just absolutely an amazing environment to be part of. TW: I don’t recall spotting Elise? Did she get lost in the crowd? (I say as though I’m not literally 5ft tall myself…) KA: Elise was definitely there chatting with Annie and Aaron the whole time but she blended in TW: Why does Dee & Amy’s mom call their Dad Mr. Warson? KA: Rita called Dee and Amy’s dad Mr. Warson because they’ve been going through a bit of a rough patch, which has been hinted at a few times over the season. You never really see him and that’s because Mrs. Warson has been trying to reach out to Dee and he doesn’t really approve. I think him not showing up to the rehearsal or the wedding really was the last straw. So it’s a distance thing. TW: Has there ever been a question you’ve mentally prepared an answer for but then you’ve never been asked it? KA: I honestly am never prepared to answer anything, if I’m honest. I guess part of me has always been curious as to why no one’s ever asked why I chose to write Dee and Rachel’s relationship the way I did. It was really obvious to me when I was writing that their more-than-friendship was extremely unhealthy in so many ways, they never have and never would have been good for each other. Last season they were both kind of in desperate, undesirable, reckless head spaces and making a lot of terrible decisions which is the worst place to start any kind of relationship from, and this season they found that they help each other stay afloat as long as they’re not drowning in each other’s bullshit which is kinda fun. I think the question I’ve always wanted to answer is why did I choose to take a staple AU plot like “Fake Relationship AU” and completely turn it on it’s head? The answer is because I’ve never seen one that says “hey this started in lies and maybe that’s not good, but look how good we are for each other as buddies”, and so that’s what I’ve kinda done. TW: As someone who is also non-binary, I know I had a lot of feels about a web series starring a NB character (played by a NB actor). What do you think Baby Kaitlyn’s reaction to this show would have been? KA: I feel like baby Kaitlyn would have found out who they are a lot sooner if this show was out when I was younger. Seeing someone live a normal life, making the same stupid decisions every human makes, and being unapologetically NB? That means the world not only to baby Kaitlyn but to me because even though I’m the actor playing the character, knowing that there’s people who watch a show where someone like me is the lead? That makes me emotional as hell. I grew up thinking I was broken and also convinced I needed to be a femme lesbian in order to find love, and I hope this show makes people’s perceptions change. TW: I can tell you with absolute certainty that it made a world of difference for this NB kid. I’m still struggling with the whole “introducing myself to people as NB” but it’s things like seeing myself represented that give me the courage to stand up for myself, you know? KA: And seriously, you don’t know how much it means to me that something like the show has made a difference for you. That’s…I’m tearing up a bit. Also thank you so so much for taking time out of your busy life to not only watch the show but also write about it. I appreciate it beyond words. TW: Are you hoping for a season three? Do we need to brace ourselves to say goodbye to these characters or is there a chance they’ll be back? KA: There’s probably not a chance for a season 3. Candice (Hudson), RJ (Lackie) and I have kind of all agreed that Season 2 is where the train stops for these characters, so we tried to make this finale really give everyone the ending the deserved. I can say that sometime in the next year, there will be one final story told for Dee, and that’s the prequel with Dee/Elena’s relationship at the front and centre. I’m very excited about it. We even managed to get the actor who was in the photos from Dee’s picture box (Courtney Keir) to reprise her role as Elena. She’s so talented and the story and the style of the prequel is just something so delightful to watch. It’s a short film/standalone piece if people don’t know the series they could watch it and get a whole story. The prequel really rounds out the entire series so people can be excited about that for sure. TW: I am totally ready for the prequel. I am fully prepared to hate Elena and I have no doubt you’ll make me love her first and it will be an awful, brilliant emotional ordeal. Is there room for another British character on the show/scriptwriting team? KA: There’s always room for more Brits- love ’em ahhaha. TW: Sweet – I’ll book my flight. Tell Chachki to make room for me on the couch! KA: And hahahah done and done. Chachki will be happy for the company ahhaa. TW: Seriously, it’s been the best talking with you. I’m gonna go ahead and assume we’re besties now. KA: Oh total besties. 100% You can catch the entire Couple-ish series now on Youtube. http://dlvr.it/Pp1jDT

Hey Plaid. You seem like a right person to ask? Could you, maybe, give some recs on Bills Shatner's movies/series? Cause only looking at his imbd page causes me a headache, lol, and I do want to watch more stuf with him. If no, it's ok, I'll figure smth out
i don’t claim to be an authority on his work because i haven’t seen all of it.
tj hooker is okay. i can’t rec any specific episodes but if you like 80s tv, check that out. boston legal is good. alexander the great from 68 is heart eyes.
the 70s, from what i’ve seen, were a weird time. i’d just kinda avoid that decade for now. it was difficult for people to see him as anything other than jim, so he was in some strange things.
if you haven’t seen his trek documentary The Captains, make sure you check that out. i loved it :3
let’s see. shatner’s raw nerve is interesting; i find him to be an excellent interviewer. weird or what is entertaining. the show where he had his house redone was good because he and his wife are awesome together.
idk maybe check those out? i got to see shatner’s world, his one-man show where he tells his life story. not sure if that’s available anywhere, but that was a great time too.

Dear Author—
First of all, you need to know how enormously warm and OVI PROUD for you I already feel about what you’re going to write.
I’m a bit of a ridiculous prompter, but they’re written that way because I’m hoping something—whether it’s the general outline or just one of the silly little details—will really strike your fancy. Don’t feel like you need to use every suggestion, and if you have another fun idea, run with it! If you look at something I suggested and think "Uh, obviously that would be what happened, it would happen like THIS instead, duh,” YES. Do it that way.
Please print out a favorite Proud Ovi photo for me and pin it to the wall of your Writing Lair. Good Things, generally:
Yes, no matter how completely bonkers my original prompt was, you are invited to put MORE HOCKEY in it. You have blanket permission to write a canon hockey-playing story in which my original batshit weird prompt is a metaphor or literary theme
Even without hockey, WINTER THEMES
Team team team. Lots of social dynamics going on, especially in dialogue. The more guys talking over each other, the more I like it
The positive and the negative ways social culture (of team sports, social class, countries) affects people. This includes my love for little daily habits or thoughts that someone living away from their country of origin might have
Different people liking different things (including different kinds and amounts of sex, and different people!) and that being OK
Things I Do Not Like So Much, generally:
Gender essentialism (including describing physical traits like muscle development, body hair, and calluses as ‘male’ or a vague “softness” as ‘female.’ Characters can absolutely still admire those traits! Just write about how nice they look and feel on this particular person, or how the narrator personally reacts to them.)
Unquestioned stereotypes about sexual identity/sexual role, formalized primary/secondary poly dynamics
Unquestioned national stereotypes
Unquestioned social class stereotypes
“Everybody’s gay”/ Everybody already knows/A character’s fears were All In Their Head
Injury for pure Drama.
The Prompts:
(Again, yes, you may make all of these about playing hockey. Honestly, please tell me how these prompts are really about hockey. )
Nicklas Backstrom/Alexander Ovechkin—Howl’s Moving Castle
Does the whole countryside believe Wizard Ovechkin eats young people’s hearts, except for one sensible hatmaker, who seeks shelter from the winter cold…only to find the wizard hungover in a castle full of dog hair and unwashed teenage apprentices? Or does our hero bully his way into the castle, remind antisocial Wizard Backstrom to go to his appointments and answer that stack of letters from King Barry about the war, and redecorate in beautiful Russian style?
I think Don Cherry is the Witch of the Northern Waste either way.
Good things:
Mix it up! Maybe we’ve got an ice demon, not a fire demon; maybe there’s no demon and more of a Koschei the Deathless situation, or other Russian/Swedish elements, and small or significant changes to the plot
Demon played by a long-suffering TJ, trapped on a line/in an ash bucket listening to them?
Whichever one is cursed enjoying the heck out of life as a grumpy old man with a stick. Gimme some thoughts and feelings about aging as an athlete
Braden Holtby/Evgeny Kuznetsov—Beauty and the Beast
Holts is Beauty.
Pick any setting you like: canon, modern AU, classic fairytale, the whacky AU of your dreams. Just give me them sharing space, slowly getting past that first grouchy impression.
Good things:
HoltBelle doing crosswords in a castle library
All the Caps being touched by the curse—and go as dark as you want with that
At least, like, five more Caps than anyone would want trying to Fix Things. (Picking which Capital is MOST like a singing candlestick is not easy. Might be Schmidt. Nicky and Ovi are a beautiful matched tea set, with all their rookie teacups)
Braden Holtby/Nate Schmidt—Books books books books books
I have JUST NOW remembered that Schmidt's last Better Halves Player Gift Basket not only included the Harry Potter chess set, but ALSO a copy of The Secrets of the FBI. Please meditate with me on what, and why, is on Nate Schmidt's reading list.
They've both given a lot of solid interviews on what it's like to be an athlete and read and learn largely outside of school when the world around you isn't really encouraging that, a subject dear to my heart, so I'd love to see more about that. Anything about reading and exploring and being extremely intense and focused doofs:
Does Nate Schmidt carefully Sort everyone in the league into the right Hogwarts houses, and occasionally scream “HUFFLEPUFF!” in delight from the bench at a passing opponent who mostly speaks Czech?
Does Holtby sometimes surface from a post-loss funk to realize that the last 5 minutes of this pep talk have sounded...suspiciously like Dumbledore quotes?
I'm really stuck on the FBI thing: how often has Schmidt dragged Braden around a new city reading historical landmark signs, and then spend lunch sitting outside a cafe guessing which passersby are undercover agents?
Does he have a Double-Secret, Holts-Only-Clearance list ranking who on the team would be the best secret agent? (I’ve been imagining all of these as a tired-but-charmed-and-touched Holts POV, but you can do either, and have Nate slowly becoming passionately convinced Holts would be the bestest James Bond ever)
I'm also happy to see a judgmental geek rift between Holtby's Serious Business crosswords and fantasy novels that they needed to work through over the years.
Or, write me a You’ve Got Mail story where they never really started talking and are both feelin secretly a bit lonely on the team, so they go home at night and chat with their BFF on Goodreads who always has the best lists and reviews....
Nicklas Backstrom/Andre Burakovsky/Marcus Johansson
The most stately and reserved courtship in Vague Historical Sweden is interrupted by a brash, unexpected young suitor.
Some quick possibilities to help you start:
1). Vague Historical Sweden
Nicky, a prince or an heir to something, is resigned to marrying someone proper who he can’t ever tell about his 20-year prank war against Polite Society. So he’s been silent and dead-eyed and thinks that’s how you court somebody
Mojo would quite like to be married, so he’ll never have to go to another formal ball where people ask him about The Wars. (Instead he will hide in a comfy study, writing more secret drafts of the secret military memoirs he definitely won’t ever publish.) Their match has been Expected for years, but they’ve barely talked and he keeps getting anxious, calling Nicky by either a full formal title or ‘Lars,’ which makes Nicky look even more dead inside, and tripping over things. Many a tactical retreat has been called.
Polite Society is...pretty sure Andre’s a fortune-hunter. He keeps asking each of them for a dance at every ball, and inviting them to skating parties, and trying very, very hard to be impressive.
2.) Award-winning Vikings
Nicky is a shieldmaiden (please don’t question me. Vague Historical Sweden does gender roles differently), and keeps a prosperous farm. Mojo is maybe the son of the next landowner over, has made a name for himself raiding, and everyone in town agrees they’d be a fine Viking couple.
Andre, who was captured on a raid or is a jarl’s kid or something, don’t ask me, also thinks they are a fine Viking couple.
3.) Modern royalty. Space royalty. Magic. Go mad with your power.
I like happiness, but I’m okay with bittersweet too. As much pining and miscommunication as you like, and any kinks or power dynamics you’ll have fun writing. You can end with a triad, a V, or a dyad if you…really want to, I guess, as long as it isn’t moralistic. The relationships don’t have to be the same, but please no formal primary/secondary poly dynamics, though.
You are best.

JUCO commit Vince Cole gives St. John’s just what it needs
It’s not hard to see what St. John’s is lacking this year. Shooting, shooting and more shooting.
A quick glance at his statistics — 22.3 points per game while shooting 47.3 percent from 3-point range — and it’s just as easy to see where Vince Cole excels. The junior college preseason All-American from Charleston, S.C. seems like the perfect addition for coach Mike Anderson’s roster.
“I feel like I can really make an impact right way, just because I can shoot the ball well and that’s something St. John’s needs right now,” the 6-foot-5 Johnnies’ signee said in a phone interview.
Cole is having a big year, leading No. 14 USC-Salkehatchie to a program-record 23 wins and the Region 10 regular-season crown. He’s leading the country in free-throw shooting (91 percent) and is 17th in scoring, while improving as a rebounder and distributor. St. John’s, meanwhile, is last in the Big East in field-goal percentage (.407) and ninth in 3-point percentage (.307), contributing to the Johnnies’ ninth place standing in the league.
USC-Salkehatchie doesn’t play in one of junior college’s premier conferences, but Cole has excelled out of conference against top teams. At the time of his commitment, he chose St. John’s over Oregon State, N.C. State, Fresno State, Illinois State, Buffalo, Coastal Carolina and Akron, among others. But Brendan Walker, the publisher of JUCORecruiting.com, said then a lot of high-major schools were beginning to show interest.
“He would have had plenty [of high-major options],” Walker said. “He checks a lot of boxes. Vince can score it. He’s got that scoring ability like [St. John’s junior] LJ Figueroa had [in junior college]. LJ was stronger and bigger, but Vince is probably a better shooter than LJ was.”
Cole said he doesn’t regret pulling the trigger early. He has a strong bond with Anderson and associate head coach TJ Cleveland, and has known the pair going back to his high school days. He is also very close with fellow St. John’s junior college signee Isaiah Moore of second-ranked Pearl River. He has helped USC-Salkehatchie become a national power this year, reaching a program-best ranking of eighth earlier this season.
“I personally believe he’s the best scorer and most complete offensive player in all of junior college,” coach Jake Williams said.
Walker believes it will take longer for Moore to make an impact for St. John’s, but the 6-10 forward’s upside is there. When he chose St. John’s, Arkansas, LSU, Alabama and Mississippi State were all involved. At just 205 pounds, he will need to put on weight to bang down low in the Big East. That said, he’s performed well for Pearl River (Miss.), averaging 16.3 points on 55.9 percent shooting from the field, 8.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game for the undefeated Indians (23-0). That includes a 23-point, 12-rebound, four-block, three-steal performance against Jones, Pearl River’s rival.
“He can play inside or out. He’s really been on the block for us and he can step out and make a 3,” Pearl River assistant coach Hayden Sowers said. “He can guard two-through-five. He brings it every game. I don’t know if he’s had a bad game since we got back from Christmas break.”
The other two members of the recruiting class are having strong seasons as well, high school seniors Posh Alexander and Dylan Wusu teaming up for Our Savior Lutheran in The Bronx. They’ve led Lutheran to a 31-3 record entering Wednesday’s regular-season finale ahead of the Greater Atlantic Conference playoffs next week. After that, Lutheran will take part in the Grind Session National Championship where it could meet Prolific Prep (Calif), which is ranked 12th in the country by Max Preps.
Alexander, a 6-foot point guard from Brooklyn, was the bigger name but Wusu has emerged after signing with St. John’s, averaging 19 points, five rebounds and five assists per game. He’s a big guard, 6-4, 215 pounds, and is now rated as a consensus three-star recruit. One college coach familiar with Wusu thinks he will be a solid four-year player for St. John’s, because of his ability to defend guards and wings, and his shot-making ability. Another coach is a fan of his strength and toughness and believes both players will excel in Anderson’s up-tempo style that will optimize their athleticism.
Lutheran coach Pete Wehye said Wusu has developed more offensively this year, being able to create his own shot, and has even run the team when Alexander has been off the floor. As for Alexander, he has rebounded from a broken arm that cost him most of last season to have a strong year, averaging 18 points, eight assists and 4.4 rebounds per game. In one of Lutheran’s biggest wins of the year, over powerhouse Putnam Science Academy (Conn.), he scored 38 points while going up against Texas A&M signee Hassan Diarra.
“The comeback season,” Wehye said. “He really put in the hard work. I tell everybody last year was the most humbling experience for him.”

How Much Do Clinical Trials For New Medications Really Cost?
MedicalResearch.com Interview with:

Thomas J Moore Thomas J Moore AB Senior Scientist Institute for Safe Medication Practices Lecturer, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics The George Washington University Milken Institute of Public Health Alexandria, VA 22314 MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings? The study provides realistic cost estimates of pivotal clinical trials that establish drug benefits to support FDA approval of 59 new drugs released for marketing in 2015-2016. The median estimated cost was just $19 million, with half of the 138 trials studied clustered between $12 million and $33 million. The highest cost trials–with estimates up to $345 million–were for new drugs that were similar to drugs already available and already proven in treating serious illnesses. MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report? Response: For the first time, readers can see what key clinical trials are now being required, and a realistic estimated cost of this key scientific evidence about drug benefits. MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work? Response: What drug clinical trials costs should be regularly disclosed to permit wiser choices about how much drug testing to require. MedicalResearch.com: Is there anything else you would like to add? Response: Limitations are discussed at length in the paper. The most important are that these are estimated costs based on 52 variables--not the actual costs. Also the costs do not reflect all the clinical studies nor capture overall drug development costs. Citation: Moore TJ, Zhang H, Anderson G, Alexander GC. Estimated Costs of Pivotal Trials for Novel Therapeutic Agents Approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, 2015-2016. JAMA Intern Med. Steinhoff shares climb off 14-year low in volatile trade
Local vanity Numbers:
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – Steinhoff (SNHJ.J) (SNHG.DE) shares plunged another 50 percent on Friday, before paring some losses as traders booked profits on short positions taken out after the South African retailer disclosed accounting irregularities earlier this week.
FILE PHOTO: A Poundland employee checks products in a store in London, Britain November 10, 2015. REUTERS/Stefan Wermuth/File Photo
More than $14 billion has been wiped off the market value of the owner of Conforama furniture stores and Poundland discount shops since Wednesday, when it announced an independent investigation into its accounts and said its CEO was leaving.
The collapse leaves South African tycoon Christo Wiese, Steinhoff’s top shareholder and chairman, more than $3 billion out of pocket, stripping him off his billionaire status.
Wiese, who likes to say “things go up, things go down,” is now worth just over $740 million, according to Forbes magazine.
The stock closed 40 percent lower at 6 rand in Johannesburg after touching a 14-year low of 5 rand. It closed down 21 percent in Frankfurt, where the group has a primary listing.
After the market close, Steinhoff said it had set up a board subcommittee, composed of independent non-executive directors, to strengthen governance and that advisory firm PwC had started its independent investigation.
“Trading in the underlying businesses across the globe continues uninterrupted particularly in the pre-Christmas period,” it added in a regulatory statement.
Cratos Capital equities trader Greg Davies said earlier buying of the stock was due to profit taking by short-sellers who had sold the shares around 55-60 rands.
Short-sellers borrow shares for a fee and sell them into the market, in the hope of repurchasing them at a lower price and pocketing the difference.
More than half of Steinhoff’s shares that are available to borrow are currently out on loan, according to Markit, a data provider – more than doubling from August and up from 40 percent on Monday. The figure is a record for Steinhoff and the highest for any South African company tracked by Markit.
The cost for short-sellers to borrow shares for a year has more than doubled from its twelve-month average of 1.4 percent to 3.1 percent, according to Astec, another data provider. Both Markit and Astec estimate it would take around ten days of trading for short-sellers to close all their positions.
‘BOTTOM FISHING’

Another trader in Johannesburg said there was a growing sense that this week’s approximate 80 percent share price tumble had triggered “bottom fishing” by buyers speculating the stock was at a level from which it could only go up.
“There does seem to be a little bit of bottom feeding coming in here, we are starting to see in the last half hour or so,” Independent Securities trader Ryan Woods said.
Steinhoff’s problems deepened on Thursday after Moody’s sent its debt deep into junk territory, cutting it by four notches and raising concerns about its governance.
“Given that allegations of accounting irregularities were raised and rebutted in August 2017 and again in November 2017 it calls into question the quality of oversight and governance at Steinhoff,” Moody’s said in a statement.
It cut Steinhoff’s debt to B1, or highly speculative, from Baa3, the lowest investment grade rating.
Steinhoff admitted to accounting problems earlier this week and its veteran chief executive Markus Jooste quit, raising questions about its liquidity and future.
A lower credit rating means the borrower usually has to pay more to borrow from investors and can reduce the value of its existing debt, forcing some holders to sell.
Steinhoff used debt to fund a shopping spree it began in 2011 with the acquisition of France’s Conforama, and turned it from a South African furniture group to an international retail empire. Its gross debt is around 7 billion euros ($8.2 billion), with 20 percent maturing within five years.
Steinhoff said on Friday it was pushing back a meeting in London with its banks from Monday to Dec. 19. That meeting had been due to discuss financial results, but their release was delayed on Wednesday.
The banks include Standard Bank, Commerzbank, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, HSBC and FirstRand. They lent 1.6 billion euros to Wiese last year to buy additional stock in Steinhoff through a family trust. They hold part of his stake in the company as collateral.
Steinhoff has been under investigation for suspected accounting irregularities by the state prosecutor in Oldenburg, Germany, since 2015. Four current and former Steinhoff managers are suspected of having overstated revenue at subsidiaries, German prosecutors said this week.
Steinhoff has denied any wrongdoing in relation to the German allegations. It has not given any details about the “irregularities” it has identified and has sought to reassure investors about its liquidity.
Separately, German financial watchdog Bafin said on Friday it had started a probe into the trading of Steinhoff shares this week. Bafin routinely looks at large or unusual share price moves as part of its campaign to stamp out market manipulation and insider trading.

Dear Author: All Caps Exchange 2017
Thank you so much for checking out my letter, dear author! Let me just start off by telling you that I love this team, I love all its pairings and those mentioned below, and I am absolutely thirsty for fic. I am sure I will be incredibly happy with what you write.
The only thing that I ask is that you try to avoid the below, my strictest Do-NOT-Wants:
Infidelity, torture, permanent damage, underage, humiliation
No WAGs
Kid fics, either de-aging or sudden baby acquisition
Bashing of any countries or nationalities.
That’s it! But if you do like guidelines, then my general likes and pairing-specific prompts are below!
GENERAL LIKES
Hockey playing “canon!” I really, really love hockey, dear author, I really, really do.
That said, I’m a sucker for imaginative AUs. I prefer reality at a slant, where there’s still hockey but something is just a little crooked, just a little magical. See: werecreature hockey players, hockey players turned into zombies, a player who’s secretly a superhero at night...
(But if complete AUs are where your muse takes you, great! Amazing! Fantastic! My sweet spot in complete AUs is when there is still the same kind of dynamic among players.)
I love pining, protectiveness, loyalty, hurt/comfort, and complicated relationships.
I am into characters who are into each other. Really, really into each other.
I LOVE THE CAPS. I REALLY, REALLY LOVE THE CAPS. I don’t have any other team, right now. I love love love this stupid team, and I love all the players. An ensemble where you can fit it in would be fantastic.
PROMPTS
These are not requests, but rather prompts. Heed only if you want!
Nicklas Bäckström/T.J. Oshie
I love these two together! They’re so playful with each other, and have pretty great chemistry together. Nicky’s 500th assist and 700th point were both with TJ! They are also judgmental, together. And like most other Caps, Oshie leaps to Nicky’s defense on ice all the time. Not surprisingly, considering the number of goals Nicky gets him.
Suggested prompts:
Before signing his recent contract, TJ was making noises about how much he wanted to stay with the Caps, especially how much he loved the people. Maybe there was a very specific reason he wanted to sign--or a specific person. Or, maybe there was an offer, to entice him to sign--either from the Caps, or NIcky himself. Take this however you’d like.
Soon after TJ arrives to the Caps, Nicky becomes convinced that he’s not all human. (Or: TJ becomes convinced that Nicky is not all human). He must be a veela, to make him smile so much. He must be a siren, for his voice to ring out so clearly and seductively on ice. A vampire, for his gaze to put him so quickly under his thrall. Either way, all this quickening pulses and skipping heartbeats whenever he is around have got to stop. (Spoiler: it probably doesn’t.)
Evgeny Kuznetsov/Marcus Johansson
I have so many feelings about these two right now, dear author, so many feelings. I love how happy they are with each other on ice and on the bench, and how well they work together. They are both versatile and incredibly talented players, and so they have such faith in each other: one trusts the other player to be there, on the ice, to do his job so that he can do his own. And it’s true. They’re amazing together.
Suggested prompts:
SO OF COURSE THEY’RE SPLIT UP, NOW. GOD. So I would love anything angsty about this trade, dear author. I really think the Mojo trade is the one that hurt me the most this postseason, and obviously, I would like to see Kuzy hurt along with me, trying to figure out how to deal with it--and I would like the two of them to work it out.
The obvious one: Kuzy’s a wizard, and Jojo’s got mojo. Clearly, this is a desperate plea for some Magic!AU. Maybe they both have magic and try desperately to hide it from each other, and only after a prolonged comedy of errors realize that they’re both trying to hide the same thing from each other. Maybe they have different types of magic, and against all odds, it proves incredibly compatible. Or not! Take this magical pair where you will!
Evgeny Kuznetsov/Nicklas Bäckström
I think there is so much potential between these two. Nicky feeds him Swedish food and calls him Kuzy, while Kuzy has his own special way of drawing Nicky out. Kuzy wore Nicky’s gloves for his debut! They really are opposites in personalities--but it is my personal belief that they are both complete goofballs in private, and that each is completely crazy, in his own special way. I’d love to see something that explores their differences: their personalities, approaches to life, experiences, and cultures.
Suggested prompts:
Nicky and Kuzy are from different species, with different conventions when it comes to courting. Wooing tactics are met with incomprehension, efforts to ask to join his pack/be his mate fail spectacularly, and misunderstandings ensure until both of them are very confused and maybe a little miserable. The team laughs at them a lot.
Nicky has a secret. Kuzy is convinced of it. No one who might know anything (say, Ovi) is telling him anything, and Nicky himself is refusing to reveal anything. But Kuzy is going to get to the bottom of this--because he’s curious. Just curious.
Nicklas Bäckström/Alexander Ovechkin
MY HOCKEY OTP, DEAR AUTHOR, MY HOCKEY OTP. I just love how well they know each other, and how long they’ve known each other. There is literally nothing I wouldn’t love to see between these two, AU, non-AU--but I’d love it if you could keep that kind of history intact: wherever they go, whoever they are, the time they’ve known each other and fitted into each other like two missing pieces is a universal truth that does not change.
Suggested prompts:
Their time in NHL is over. They've packed up their skates, given their last interviews, and let the team's leadership go to younger hands. Before they book their tickets to leave the U.S. for good, though, they're going to go on a road trip, just the two of them, driving through America. It's a farewell trip, their one last hurrah, and it's bittersweet and despondent and filled with both words never said before and words that never will get said. Trouble is, neither of them want to the trip to end. Ever.
One of them has a career-ending injury. It's especially shitty because he was really fucking hoping to turn around his career and start climbing once more. The other is just a friend, not a lover, and not even a teammate anymore, but he can't help hanging around the injured one. Just to make sure. It can get dark in there, sometimes.
Variation: While the injured one is nursing his misery at home, this giant dog starts visiting him all the time. He has no idea whose dog this is, but the dog sits on his lap like a puppy and runs around his yard to make him happy and keeps looking at him with these mournful adoring eyes and makes sure he's doing all right. It's actually pretty nice. The dog really, really reminds him of someone, though, someone he thought he'd had to leave behind when he was injured.

I always loved computers and programming. This will date me, but as a kid, I had a Commodore 64, and it was awesome. I used to program in Basic—you know, make little games and stuff on that. We actually had an Atari as well, and we had what was called a “Trash-80.” The TRS-80 from Radio Shack was our first home computer, which couldn’t do anything, really, but it was awesome. I used to subscribe, actually, as a kid, to these really thick magazines called Byte Magazine, and I would pore through that to find out what the new stuff was—like the modems where you have to put the phone on the modem and everything. So I’ve always been interested in technology and computers and programming. I actually studied a couple of years of elementary education in college and then switched to English literature and history, so that’s actually my academic background, but on the side I was always dealing with computers and messing around...
I’ve been here [at CCP], I think it’s been 8 or 9 years. I think part of it is just that I like the idea of, even though I’m not doing anything directly that impacts other people, that helps them—I like the idea that what I’m doing has that impact. It helps to have that impact. I could go and work at some place that might make more money or something like that, but I had a friend that went up to New York and was working on Wall Street and was making some big money, but for what purpose? He had a ton of hours that he’d have to put in. I have a family. I like being able to have that work-life balance, and I feel like this kind of place respects that and encourages that.
