Karl and His Time-Twisted Fiances

In Karl's defense, he's never actually babysat before.

"There is nothing you could take that I have not already lost."

Karl sighs, trying not to roll his eyes. It's a time of great distress for the toddler that is meant to be his fiance, he's sure.

"I can get you another cookie later," he promises and the teenage Quackity in the corner sneers, "Dramatic much?"

Four-year-old Sapnap sniffles.

Karl doesn't have a lot of patience for the seventeen-year-old version of his love, the one of two who should know better.

If he didn't know better, he'd almost say Quackity was feeling jealous.

Gods, this would be eons easier if neither remembered anything. As it is, they understand what's happening, but only to the extent their current age allows.

The little Sapnap had tearfully cried "fiances" over and over again, more than happy to have Quackity and Karl in the same room together for more than a minute.

Quackity, unfortunately, doesn't hold the same childish forgiveness. He glares at Karl like he's a villain and occasionally snaps at the toddler like he deserves to be yelled at before he can properly ride a bike.

"Please be nice to him," Karl says for the fourth time, "He's just a baby."

"No' baby," the baby complains, " Fia'ce ."

"I didn't agree to marry a baby," Quackity says dryly.

Sapnap sniffles. "No' marry?"

Tearily, he stares at Quackity like he's just said the world was ending.

"Of course I'm not marrying a baby ," Quackity says, "And grown-up you left me , so you can count me out on that one too."

"Left you?" Karl asks, says, "We didn't leave you, Quackity. You left us to go start Las Nevadas."

"You," he spits, "left me to go make your perfect little Kinoko Kingdom with Sapnap."

"We invited you," Karl says, eyes wide, "Quackity, I invited you."

"No, Karl," Quackity seethes, "You didn't ."

"I didn't?" Karl asks, something like horror in his throat. Gods, no wonder Quackity hated him.

"What?" Quackity asks, "Did you forget me?"

Karl inhales sharply.

He wouldn't, he wouldn't . And, yet, all of the evidence is here in front of him.

"Kar'?"

Little Sapnap is watching him, eyes wide and awfully concerned for a four-year-old. He shakes, knows that he's falling into familiar and forgotten pieces of himself.

"You actually forgot me," Quackity breathes disbelievingly. Tears well up in Karl's eyes.

"Forgettin' lots," baby Sapnap says quietly.

"Yeah?" Quackity asks, hurt and confused and angry, "Forgetting you ?"

"Think so," little Sapnap admits and Karl jolts.

"No," he swears, lies, "I didn't forget either of you, I won't ."

"It sounds like you already did," Quackity says, a little dead-sounding.

Baby Sapnap bites his lip. "Sick?" he asks tentatively.

Karl breathes.

"Sometimes," he admits, "Yeah. Sometimes."

Quackity purses his lips. "Why didn't you say something?"

"I can't," Karl says. He doesn't want to give them false hope. "Quackity, I can't . Don't ask me to, please, please, please don't ask me to."

"You don't trust us," Quackity accuses.

"No," Karl denies, "They won't let me--"

He shuts his mouth with a click, jaw snapping closed when his mind catches up with his mouth.

"Le'?" Baby Sapnap asks worriedly.

"It's not a big deal," Karl tries.

"You're forgetting your own fiance," Quackity points out. Fiance, singular. Karl tries to push the hurt down.

"Fia'ces," Sapnap says, stressing the plurality of the word.

"Right," Quackity agrees easily, "The point stands. If someone's hurting you, we can protect you."

"You can't fight this," Karl says tiredly, "Neither can I. Please don't push this."

Quackity sighs. "I'll leave it alone for now."

He bites his lip and his feathers ruffle slightly behind him. "You forgot to invite me to Kinoko Kingdom."

Karl nods. "I swear I thought I told you."

Sapnap sniffles, reminding them that he is literally unable to keep the pace of this conversation.

Hot take: letters from Yorkshire is a queerplatonic relationship

"It's not romance simply how things are"

- some interpretations may compare the "romance" to the romanticisation of the man's other life in Yorkshire or vice versa. However this could also portray their relationship and is more likely to do so as later lines emphasise the speaker's frankness in differences between their lives.

"our souls tap out messages"

- Where the spiritual language of "souls" suggests a deep and meaningful connection that is not romantic in nature as mentioned in previous lines.

Additionally, this is the only poem in the anthology that is not clear on its relationship as it is not explicitly familial nor is it explicitly romantic in nature. Dooley also does not provide much context in the aspect of decifering the relationship between the man and the speaker, thereby giving rise to the argument that 'Letters from Yorkshire' presents a queerplatonic relationship

I'm actually not particularly fond of the romance/sex-favorable/neutral/repulsed division as, like, a permanent identity for me because somedays I'm frolicking in romance and smut & other days I want to explode the world if I see ppl even mention a ship at all. I think it's good for a lot of people, but it doesn't really work for me unless I'm feeling repulsed or neutral or favorable

Edit: Everyone who saw this that was wondering if there was a word for this: I've been informed about the term sex/romance-ambivalent. I suggest searching it up. We see a panel of Miles' pensive face concentrating as he listens to "Hot to Go". He thinks to himself "hm".

Another panel zoomed in more. His pensive expression has grown more tense/confused as he listens to "Red Wine Supernova". he again thinks to himself "Hm" in a larger thought bubble.

We zoom out again to see Nick, Miles, and Maya standing together again. Miles stares forward blankly, eyebrows raised. Maya excitedly leans in.

Maya: Ok, that's her whole discography. So! What did you think?

Nick looks at him, waiting for his response

We get a panel of Miles, looking bewildered. He starts to speak "I..."

We cut again to see the three of them standing together.

Miles: I... don't think I like women?

Miles looks shocked and confused. Nick is bent over laughing, using a hand on Miles's shoulder to support himself. Maya looks outraged and appalled!

Maya: MR. EDGEWORTH! Just because you don' like her musi it doesn't give you an excuse to be sexist!

We see a panel of Miles looking stressed and confused. He leans his head on one of his hands, which messes up his hair, showing how he isn't his normal put together self.

Miles: I should rephrase that. What I mean is, Ms. Roan is clearly VERY assured in her feelings towards women. I was... unaware that anyone felt that strongly. I thought we all viewed these things with a vague sense of distaste and unease but collectively ignored it. Like how we do with climate change.

We zoom out again to see the three of them. Miles stands in the middle looking deeply uncomfortable and lost in thought, vibrating with unease. Nick and Maya exchange deeply concerned glances across from him.

With lingering unease, Miles begins to walk away.

Miles: Well, I should be going then. Goodnight.

Nick hesitantly raises a finger to point out an inaccuracy in that statement

Nick: It's four in the afternoon-

he gets interrupted by Miles who repeats firmly: I said Goodnight

Nick looks in the direction Miles walked off in.

Nick: ...He'll be ok, right?

Maya reassures him: Of cours Nick! I mean, what's the worst that can happen?

Jump cut to a closeup of Nick's hand holding Miles' letter which reads Miles Edgeworth chooses death in all caps. Then, below in smaller font, it says Also femininomenon was really good, thanks.

We see a panel of Nick glaring wordlessly at Maya as he holds the letter in his hand. Maya leans against the wall and looks away, whistling, trying to look innocent to avoid blame.

As a bonus, we also have a page that takes place a year later. Miles and Nick stand talking. Miles looks calmer now, and Nick smiles encouragingly.

Miles: In my time in Europe, I've been examining myself and my approach to law. Ultimately, the most important focus must be justice. We owe it to ourselves and to the people we serve

Nick: Wow, that's really inspiring Edgeworth. And, uh, hows the... the other thing going?

We get a zoomed in panel of Miles glaring menacingly at a suddenly nervous Nick

Jumping out again, Miles turns his back to Nick as he continues to talk

Miles: So as I was saying, justice is truly so important...

Nick nervously rubs the back of his neck wearing an awkward expression as he sweats nervously. He thinks to himself internally "Ooookay then, clearly still working through some things there"
