This fic was written for the 2020 Penumbra Mini Bang.

This fic was posted in 2020. I'm sharing it now because I want my Tumblr to have a nicely organized link to each of my fics. Some I've shared with such inconsistent tags I can't find the links myself, and many I've never blogged about at all! This one I know I have, but this is an easier way to get organized.

There’s a possibility that Damien won’t go home next season.

To be fair, the possibilities for Second Citadel next season are so many, and so varied, and I still don’t know what to make of that ending so I’m not sure any prediction I make will be rooted in anything but vibes - but vibes are what I’ve got, and lots of time for predictions. And I think there’s a chance that Arum and Rilla will have a hard time convincing him.

He spent the majority of last season following Sir Tristan, and while that’s not a decision he wanted to make, it is a decision he ultimately made - repeatedly. Whether or not anyone blames him for it, I have a feeling that’s going to stick with Damien, especially after his assertion in the finale that “I always have a choice.” When he has a chance to reflect on that, will he be forgiving of himself? Maybe. But he hasn’t been lately, about a lot of things.

In the end, he also had to make the choice to coax the being in the tower to hatch. Putting aside how it seemed like Damien, specifically, was brought to the tower for that purpose - he talked to that being. He made promises. He had a part in… whatever it was that came after, disastrous as it was.

All of this is to say, there’s a strong possibility that Damien is going to feel extremely responsible for whatever fallout there is for what happened at the tower. I think he’s the type of person who would want to fix it - or help fix it, or help with recovery efforts, or whatever the case may be. I think he’d feel beholden to his word, too; he made a promise to make the world a better place. I didn’t get the impression that those were empty words.

So, when Arum and Rilla find him, finally… I think Damien might want to stay. Or feel like he needs to stay, even if he’s heartsick for home. Arum is already pushing his limits, he’ll have to go back to the swamp; I can’t see Damien being okay with him making the return trip, or having to stay there, alone. None of them are going to like it, but they’re in a difficult position, especially if the damage has spread farther than Silvershore and Titan’s Bloom is at risk.

Arum may get the questionable opportunity of sharing something Rilla has years of experience with - waiting to see if Damien ever makes it home.

Crowley tried to wiggle into a more advantageous position, but stuck as he was in the coffin, all he was able to do was make the wood creak under the power of his wings, shuddering under Aziraphale's weight and soft caresses. “Gah-” His eyes fluttered shut, his mouth opening wide, showing his fangs and forked tongue. “Angel, that’s-” Aziraphale’s hand coursed through the feathers of his obsidian wings, clutching his throat shut. “Goddamn, angel-”

“No blasphemy, wily snake.” He wrapped his fingers around his cock, and Crowley gasped under his grasp.

“Ah- alright, Father Fell.”

Now, that was surprisingly exciting- Aziraphale’s shaft most certainly reacted quite well to the title. “Hmm, indeed. And a holy man’s role is to thwart the plans fomented by Hell.”

“Oh please, Mr. Holy Man, show me the Light that I have forsaken!” Crowley exclaimed sarcastically into the void of the night, his snickers broken off by soft moans that he tried so very hard to conceal.

“Hm, well, you see… The most pious ones go as far as punishing the evil out of a body. Do you think that might work?”

“Oh, I don’t know about tha-” A gasp stopped him in his words, and he closed his eyes for a moment, as Aziraphale’s hand trailed its path among his dark feathers, pressing them between his fingers, caressing them like tender skin.

Absolutely!! I pretty much only read on Ao3 anymore so all of my recommendations are going to be there, but if others want to tack on their own recommendations in the comments they're always welcome to do so :)

A few things,

I tried to put content warnings on the bodies of work as I see fit, but some of these I read over a year ago and haven't looked at since so I apologize if I've missed something!

Additionally speaking, I've marked anything in which contains characters having sex with a red heart emoji ❤️ as it should be viewable on light and dark mode, across multiple forms of devices (ios vs android, etc) and should be readable to screen readers as well; As per previous notes on this blogs, any explicit depictions of characters having sex will also have them being explicitly over 18. Now without further ado-

I'm a huge fan of rabbit_soup's "Healing Takes Two" series, it's 13 pieces in total some of them are oneshots and others are multichapter but they all fit together making it a large body of text. The plot extends from Nico's three days in the infirmary to the early stages of their relationship and still seems to be ongoing with the author taking on rewriting some of their older pieces.

Except then he meets his husband - a boy, and one younger than he is at that! - and realises that he has absolutely no idea what to expect. All he can hope for is that no one tries to kill him.

As an extension of your post about epithets, I'm wondering if you can help me pin down what it is about the use of phrases like "those eyes" or "that mouth" that have started to just drive me bonkers when I read some fanfic. At times I come across it and it feels completely natural, and other times it feels like a somewhat lazy shorthand for expressing a character's admiration. Thank you!

I can't speak with certainty, because this isn't a problem that's come up enough in my own fandoms for me to really analyze it in context, but I'll give it my best guess.

Phrases like "those eyes" and "that mouth" work most effectively for me when they're a reference back to a previous description. Maybe those eyes are really exceptional. For instance, Sir Damien in The Penumbra Podcast goes on at length about Lord Arum's violet eyes to the point that "those violet eyes..." are already a recurring motif inside the work, so the fics that use the phrase are all calling back to that.

Sometimes, though, you'll get writers refer to features that don't make any sense in the situation. I've seen lots of complaints brought up about prose describing a character's "plush lips" and "fine ass" when the actor portraying that character very decidedly has neither of those things-- often completely ignoring the qualities that the character actually does have in favor of the generic "sexy" ones.

Often, "that [body part]" carries a very strong sexual connotation, particularly about what the POV character would very much like to be doing to "that mouth/those thighs/those arms/that neck/whatever". They tend to work best in my opinion when the point-of-view character has very specific fantasies/memories that are described, or at least implied, on the page. But sometimes you'll get that phrasing from a character where it doesn't make sense for them to be thinking of the other person in those terms. Maybe they're sexually inexperienced in a way where specific fantasies seem out of character, or their preferences within the narration veer very sharply in one direction but the designated body part implies otherwise (for example, the writer's gone on at length about them exclusively liking to bottom but describing the other person as if their intention is to top them-- not out of irony or subtext, but because that's a generic "attractive feature").

I think it also ought to be said that which features are emphasized, and the adjectives used to emphasize them, work best when they're deliberately chosen to build a specific effect-- is the other person's vibe elegant, or brutal, or delicate, or whatever? Picking qualities and features that reinforce that vibe can be super evocative and feel much more personal than sticking to the standards. In a recent fandom I'm in, one character is singled out as being exceptionally strong in the canon, and specifically noteworthy to the character that he's frequently shipped with. Consequently, a lot is done with his love interest thirsting over the breadth and power of the character's shoulders. Shoulders weren't sexy before, but they sure as hell are now.

TL;DR: if I had to guess at what makes that phrase fall flat, it would be a lack of specificity to the actual character, or an inconsistency with the way the people in the scene are characterized.
