Honestly, even if just for that reason, having a beta can really help. They're a fresh set of eyes on your stuff, and even if all you need is a cheerleading read, they'll be happy to provide any kind of support you need.

i hate how you get desensitized to the cool stuff in your WIP if you've been writing it for a long time so when you read back over it you're like "this isn't as cool as i thought :(" but it still is! you just read it too many times

That is an INCREDIBLE piece advice for characterisation. Thank you so much.

One of my favourite questions for figuring out a character’s motivations is which qualities they most fear being assigned to them. Are they afraid (consciously or unconsciously) of being seen as stupid? Ungrateful? Weak? Incompetent? Lazy? Cowardly? Intimidating? Like they actually care? etc.

It’s such a fun way to explore into who they are, why they do what they do, what they don’t do out of fear, and how they might be affected by the events of the story. And I love when characters have negative motivations—trying to avoid something (in this case, being seen a particular way) as much as they’re trying to achieve a goal.

Aziraphale loves to send Christmas cards. This year, he wanted to go the extra mile, using a photo of him and Crowley for the Cover. It was hard to convince the demon of letting a photo be taken of the two of them. It was harder to get him to wear the sweater and the hat.

He only did it because he lost a bet.
