TEFAF 2024 : vive les femmes !
There is a lot to tell about the art fair TEFAF, one of the most important in Europe. Good news: women artists are on the rise. They are more prominently shown, and seem to sell well. But there is so much more to see and to tell (and to buy... )...

Technique on this one is reverse appliqué. Two layers of fabric, quilt your designs, then cut the top layer away in the design to reveal the fabric below. Crazy fun!

"🪡✨ Combining my love for quilting and sci-fi is like stitching together galaxies of imagination! Creating sci-fi quilts brings my creativity to life and takes me on an interstellar journey with every stitch. It's a warp-speed escape into a world of fabric art and geeky bliss. 🌌🧵 #Quilting #SciFiQuilts"

My fiber arts final! This is what I was working on instead of any of my normal illustration. It’s a Torah ark cover— a parochet— and it’s meant to commemorate the Simchat Torah Pogrom. The bit in the middle is a supernova, while the bits at the sides are meant to be either grain or challah, representing the kibbutzim. The Hebrew reads “We will dance again,” in reference to Mia Schem. All naturally dyed. Anyone clowning in the notes will be immediately blocked.
IMAGE ID: A series of photographs of a curtain hung in front of a wall. The curtain has a grey background and a number of appliqué pieces sewn on with embroidery floss. In the center is the image of a supernova and it’s framed by pillars of wheat like brown leaves on each side. On the top is a yellow crown, while on the bottom is the Hebrew: עוד נרקוד שוב. The Hebrew lettering is in pink and is attached with a pale yellow satin stitch. The first photograph is of the entire piece, while the other three are detail shots of the supernova, the wheat, and the crown. END ID.

HEY LOOK AT THIS SICK-ASS BANNER I SEWED TOGETHER FOR MY SHOP!!!! I pulled this guy together in less than twenty-four hours, most of which was completed while watching my girlfriend play Inscryption and while she and her partner played coooool folk punk music in the park :33 process under the cut for those interested:
I didn’t take pictures so this is just a brief description of how i did it for posterity and when i forget l8r
First, i estimated how big i wanted the letters to be, and drew one to two out each on sheets of printer paper. Once i’d done them all in what’s basically a big version of my handwriting, i made sure they were all roughly the same size.
I cut each letter out, then flipped them backwards and traced them onto a variety of scrap fabric I had left over from patch projects. I tried to reuse fabrics as little as possible, and to spread out the repeats. There’s scraps from two pairs of pants here as well.
Next, I laid out all the fabric letters across the banner, lined them up as best as possible, and pinned them all down. Then I rolled the entire thing up from right-to-left so I could unroll it as I went. It’s about twelve feet long, give or take.
And after that it was just a matter of blanket-stitching around each letter with matching embroidery thread! For about four to six hours total! (I didn’t time it.)

Two appliqué projects I did about the St. Lawrence Seaway/The Lost Villages.
Top one is based on the Lost Villages Historical Society logo, bottom is based on a photograph by George Hickey taken in Aultsville, Ontario just before the flooding of the Seaway.

I made a Moonwatcher plush! She’s a late birthday gift for a family friend, and I put in so much effort for her! My fingers are sore and my back hurts, but I’m so proud of how she turned out. I’ll put some of the in progress pictures under the cut if you want to see them!
I used the dragon pattern and wof pattern hack by CholyKnight, and ive loved all her patterns so much. Definitely recommend her website sewdesune where you can find free patterns as well as the paid ones!

This weekend I'll take this back down to get better photos, especially of the quilting (which is what I've been dragging ass on, and which is nearly invisible while it's hung up), but for now It! Is! Done! And I only started in 2013. 😂

From ok, no big deal, no reason to stop scrolling…
Hey, wait a minute, how is that the same thing??!? That’s a quilt?!
Double layer quilting. Denim on top, rainbow bricks under. Sandwiched on top of batting and backing. Quilted. Bound. And now trimming away to show the bricks one trimmed piece at a time.
Work in progress

I enjoyed watching The Orville. The Moclan female Heveena was one of my favorite characters. I have made 4 quilts using The Orville as inspiration.
Of the four quilts I have made 2 of them are about the Female Moclan Colony. The Moclan houses have unique windows and that is what the first quilt represents. The quilt is lovely but I regret not mirroring the window design.
The second quilt is a representation of the couch quilt in the Dolly Parton episode and the necklace the female Moclan leader “Heveena” wore.
