🖼 The story in the painting “Alexander of Macedon trusts the doctor Philip” (1870)
Artist: Henryk Siemiradzki
According to legend, Alexander the Great, defeated the Persians, fell terribly ill. Among the healers in the king’s entourage, an honorable man named Philip of Acarnania was bold enough to develop a medicine that he swore would heal Alexander of his illness. Parmenion sent to warn Alexander that Philip had been bribed by Darius III to poison him. Alexander read the warning, and took the cup of medicine and then passed the note to Philip. Philip read it, and while he was reading Alexander swallowed the dose.
There was nothing wrong with Philip’s medicine.

DICK PICS FROM ART HISTORY
Polish painter Henryk Siemiradzki was rich and famous. He originally studied science, but abandoned that career to take up painting at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, where he won a gold medal in 1870. He is most famous for his monumental academic art, including scenes of antiquity and of the New Testament. There is little written about his personal life other than that he spent much of his life in Rome and he had an estate in Poland where he spent his summers. His remains are in the Polish National Pantheon in Krakow. This nude, painted while the artist was at the Imperial Academy of Arts, was owned by a dentist in Warsaw, where it was shown in a 1939 exhibition by the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Warsaw. More recently, it was sold to a Polish collector at auction in 2012 for $59,000 US.

Priestesses holding lanterns
Yeah, I know, Ishtar is a southwestern Asian goddess and pale Nordic women come from northern Europe.
For that matter, the lanterns are ENORMOUS. Maybe they're optimized for being held and she's just started her shift, so she still has a lot of upper body stamina?
The costumes and hair are fabulous! Also, check the artists I referred to. They're not the standard ones I often use in this 'recipe.' They're classicist artists, mainly from the late 19th century.

Henryk Siemiradzki — Nero's Torches, 1876

I just have to scream about this gift because everyone deserves to know the amount of exceptional research that went into creating it (for me! gasp).
The artist behind The New Bracelet (1883), Henryk Siemiradzki, isn’t quite Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but you might have seen his name often mentioned in the same context. The Polish painter spent most of his life in Rome, creating monumental pieces focused on Roman history and mythology.
His best known artwork, Nero’s Torches (1876), is focused on the martyrdom of early Christians under the rule of emperor Nero, the very same that Aziraphale became a music tutor of back in 41 AD — right before he reunited with Crowley in a certain tavern — in an attempt to inspire the boy to greatness. So @trashlord-watson‘s choice to depict Aziraphale and Crowley enjoying their company in this idyllic Mediterranean setting right before the storm of their own making, one that will shake the very fundaments of the ancient world as they know it and recalibrate Heaven’s policy for the next millennia, is not only an amazing idea from the artistic point of view, but a phenomenal study of their relationship at the time as well.
The Good Omens fans readily analyze Crowley’s possible reaction to Aziraphale’s involvement in the Flood, but I haven’t seen anyone point out his more direct involvement in the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire — an elaborate, mass-scale suffering that lasted even longer than the biblical tragedy — from 1st to 4th century AD. The amount of guilt in this poor, poor angel!
To add one more layer of meta, the creation of Nero’s Torches was a reason of Siemiradzki’s falling out with his close friend and fellow painter Stanisław Witkiewicz, who heavily disagreed with overtly aesthetic treatment of such a politically and emotionally charged subject and as a result became an avid critic of the then popular trend of historical painting in general. Siemiradzki’s recurring studies of this exact pair of friends bonding over a golden bracelet in the following years might or might not be seen as an attempt to process the history and loss of his personal friendship.
Imagine Aziraphale haunted like this, uncertain about the fragile bond he managed to build with this remarkable demon, only to be eventually approached by him a few centuries later with an offer of an Arrangement.
