Each issue of the print magazine explores queer art history. In Issue 0, we consider the work of Swedish painter Eugène Fredrik Jansson (1862-1915) who was known for his nighttime landscape and cityscape paintings. In 1904, he became tired of the subject and took a break from art, during which he started visiting the navy bathhouse. He returned to painting and focused on male nudes for the rest of his life. His brother, who was gay, burnt all of Eugene's letters when he died. Homosexuality was illegal in Sweden until 1944.

Koloman Moser

Koloman Moser was one of the leading artists of the Vienna Succession and was a co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte. This work is essentially a riff on Swiss Symbolist Ferdinand Hodler's 1901 painting (also called), Spring.

DICK PICS FROM ART HISTORY

Polish painter Henryk Siemiradzki was rich and famous. He originally studied science, but abandoned that career to take up painting at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, where he won a gold medal in 1870. He is most famous for his monumental academic art, including scenes of antiquity and of the New Testament. There is little written about his personal life other than that he spent much of his life in Rome and he had an estate in Poland where he spent his summers. His remains are in the Polish National Pantheon in Krakow. This nude, painted while the artist was at the Imperial Academy of Arts, was owned by a dentist in Warsaw, where it was shown in a 1939 exhibition by the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Warsaw. More recently, it was sold to a Polish collector at auction in 2012 for $59,000 US.

DIRTY PICTURES is a collection of postcards that feature art and photography, collaged images, and found images that are sometimes manipulated. The goal of each pack of 16 cards is to be a parade of faggotry with a soupcon of pretty things scattered about.

Giovanni Giacometti was a Swiss painter and the father of artists Alberto and Diego Giacometti and architect Bruno Giacometti. This work was made while the artist was studying at the Académie Julian in Paris.

Artble says on its page about Carracci, "A quiet, introverted man, his conspicuous lack of torrid love affairs, salacious scandals, or violent behavior have led to his gradual disappearance on the horizon of famous artists." Interestingly, according to his wishes, he was buried near Raphael in the Pantheon. Very little is known about his personal life.

DICK PICS FROM ART HISTORY

A faun is the Roman equivalent of a Greek satyr. In mythology, these beings were human-like male woodland spirits with several animal features, often a goat-like tail, hooves, ears, or horns. Fauns attended Bacchus. As noted in Wikipedia, "His wantonly spread legs focus attention on his genitals."
