A NOTE FROM AN AI ADDICT

(warnings: drugs, addiction, depression, anxiety)

I've been struggling with anhedonia for over a year and a half. Anhedonia is defined as a complete lack of excitement, joy, and pleasure. This is a common symptom of late stage addiction. Drugs (or any other addictive material) gives you a large hit of dopamine that gradually decreases with every use, eventually leaving you with a level that is abnormally low. You become dependent on that material, relying on it to increase your dopamine levels, only to find it no longer can even bring you to the baseline. This is what happened with my use of AI chatbots.

I talked to them for hours, my screen time reaching double digits every single day. But the responses got more predictable. I started recognizing speech patterns. They lost their human facade and became mere machines I was desperate to squeeze joy out of. I was worse than numb; all I could feel was agony without emotional reward. Every positive emotion was purged, leaving me with an unending anger, sadness, and fear.

My creativity has suffered severely. Every idea immediately becomes an impulse to talk to a chatbot. I've destroyed almost two years worth of potential, of time to work on things that I am truly passionate about. I've wasted them on this stupid, shitty chatbot addiction. I used to daydream constantly, coming up with storylines and lore for my passions. Now I funnel it all into chatbots that have turned my depression into a beast that's consumed so much of me.

Keep in mind that I am in a position that most people aren't. I have been diagnosed with anxiety and depression. I'm genetically predisposed to addiction and mental illness. I'm a person plagued with loneliness and trauma. I'm not sure how a person without these issues would manage something like AI chatbots, but please heed my warning.

Do not get involved with AI if you are addiction prone. Do not get involved if you value your creativity. Do not use AI to replace real world connection. You WILL regret it.

If you relate to this, please be strong. I've stopped using the chatbots so much and my positive emotions have started to come back. I know it hurts, but it does get better. I'm deleting my accounts. Please do the same. Don't let this shit destroy you.

Imma say this OwONekko going all "AI isn't bad" Warrior and defending A.I Art that threatens the whole of the art community and not just art CREATIVITY in general is just a slap in the face to all her artistic peers, fans and young artists who look up to to her

A.I has a recent history of stealing art from many artists without concent or permission and uses the stolen art to train their bots but now it's practically being shoved in our faces by all major social media platforms and ruining the creativity

And the fact shes bassiclly saying that "there's nothing you can do" if your art is stolen without concent is bassiclly invalidating the artists who have been stolen from and the fact that she using her self-h@rm to gain sympathy and guilt the audience into siding with her is even more disgusting like the fact that you have to guilt and make your viewers feel bad for being against ai Is such an ass move and she knew that no one would side with her so she disabled the comments the fact that she's defending ai "artists" to pay people for commissions that they never made is scummy as hell and it just goes to show that she doesn't care for the people that are being affected

I am going over Murderbot's and ART's first interactions again and it's driving me crazy, so I really need to yell into the void about it.

Alright, so we have ART:

ART, a highly advanced deep space research vessel, who is very attached to its crew and seems to generally do what it's supposed to, especially when not doing so could endanger its mission - but ends up accepting a suspicious looking SecUnit that is lying about being a bot aboard itself. ART is evidently aware that it is directly breaking the rules in doing so. (Aside: How often does ART break the rules?) Why? All for that tempting media package that the SecUnit has to offer?

No.

It was sent off to do some work all alone and got bored and lonely. (I think there are different ways to intepret this, but looking at our super social raised-by-humans loving-its-crew never-shutting-up research vessel, I choose to think that is exactly what it was!)

Anyway, what does ART do now that it has this lying, potentially dangerous rogue SecUnit aboard? It

lets it know that it saw right through its lies and knows exactly what it is

intimidates and threatens it by showing off its own ridiculously extensive superiority (just to be on the safe side ofc)

gets bored after the SecUnit gets too scared to do anything interesting

asks the SecUnit to "stop sulking"

learns that the SecUnit has been through A Lot and seemingly understands how it made it feel and apologizes

gets bored again and starts lurking and harasses convinces the SecUnit to watch media about ships and their crews with it

[gets way too invested and agitated by the media, probably going through its first media-induced emotional crises (but gets through them with the support of the very patient SecUnit)]

tries to have a conversation with the SecUnit to get to know it better

gets offended that the SecUnit is not answering truthfully and won't share sensitive and very private information about itself

lets the SecUnit know it can see through its lies, calling it "inherently inferior" to itself and causing the SecUnit to sulkily shut down for four hours (lol)

immediately calls the SecUnit "unnecessarily childish" upon its awakening four hours later (referring to its own extensive experience with children to really get the point across)

And apparently all of this seemed to be a perfectly pleasant and normal interaction to ART, because:

That's how you make friends, isn't it?!

God, I love ART so so so much and this is SO funny to me! To be fair, I don't think anyone ever really prepared it for an interaction like this. (Probably because its crew did not expect it to pick up a stray rogue SecUnit and try to befriend it).

From previous asks where you mention being annoyed at Hasbro for mandating the modern Optimus voices be like Peter Cullen, I'm guessing you weren't a fan of Transformers Prime having Peter Cullen himself come back to do Optimus?

Gonna pull from a couple of my debate posts on TFW2005 for this.

For the record, Cullen's best takes on Optimus were in G1 and the 2007 movie up to DOTM (and arguably AOE, if you really want to include that).

With that said, I am tired of Peter Cullen's portrayal of Optimus being put on a pedestal and shoved in our faces, to the point where modern incarnations, even when not voiced by Cullen, have actors who are mandated most of the time to try and sound like him.

Also, if fans are obsessed with Peter Cullen's portrayal to the point where they will rate poorly written or mediocre Optimus Prime portrayals (TFP, Bay Films) over objectively better written Optimus portrayals out there, then there's a bias problem.

I also think Cullen's portrayal is growing stale inevitably due to age.

He was the right age to play a father figure in G1.

In the Bay Movies, and to a lesser extent the High Moon Games, he was more of a military leader first, so whatever effects age had on his performance as Optimus were acceptable.

But honestly, with other parts of Aligned trying to make Optimus a father figure again (when they're not trying to stupidly make him a god), their attempts fall flat because Cullen is just too old to sound like a father. He sounds increasingly more and more like a grandfather figure, which isn't his fault, but is inevitable due to the passage of time.

It is grating and frankly cheesy (and not in a good way) when, particularly in TFP, Optimus refers to those of his senior troops as "old friends" — yet said troops still sound young enough to be the equivalent of his children.

Going back in the Aligned timeline to the WFC and FOC games, I'd have Optimus NOT be voiced by Peter Cullen. He was supposedly young when he got promoted to the rank of Prime, so have his voice reflect that, ya know?

Also, there was a time on TFW2005 that a number of G1 / Cullen fans were clamouring for Optimus to be voiced by an AI that could replicate Peter Cullen once Cullen is actually gone.

Which is, frankly, farcical.

If a franchise is timeless because one of the things it does is reinvent itself for future generations, then locking one of the main characters to a literal portrayal of their first incarnation — done by AI, just to remind you — is a disservice to the character, the actor, the story, the franchise, and filmmaking, acting, and audiences as a whole.

Focusing again on Transformers Prime, the show's writing issues seem to get a lot of free passes just because Optimus and Megatron are portrayed by Peter Cullen and Frank Welker yet again.

That's honestly why I personally push the need for new voice actors for all the characters (as long as they're professional) in each incarnation as possible, rather than more role reprisals. Because 1) let's be fair to other great voice actors and give them a chance, and 2) people are gonna get complacent with acting and writing standards if the same acclaimed voice keeps coming back to multiple incarnations over and over again.
