Hi! I hope you don’t mind me asking, did you go to art school or were you self taught? Do you recommend taking art classes and if so do you have any recommendations? Also if you don’t mind my asking, what got you into drawing in the first place? I hope you’re having a good day!
Hello! :D I don't mind at all! 😊
Also I did study art! My first program was more of a general introduction where I got to try out a ton of different mediums and techniques, whereas my second one was entirely specialized and focused on the 2D aspect. 🤓
I was aways deeply fascinated by drawing, and would skim through my old illustrated books all the time when I was a kid. Being able to create the illusion of life and movement through simple lines and colors was to me like a sort of cryptic magic, and I remember I had a galaxy brain moment the very first time I realized that traditionally animated movies were actually thousands upon thousands of separate drawings shown in rapid succession! 🤯😄
I learned many things through trial and error by experimenting on my own as well when I was younger, and gradually coming up with an approach that felt both comfortable and natural to me. But going to art school was what pushed said approach a little further and allowed me to significantly improve it. 🎨

French Art schools are in danger
The alert was launched several years ago in French art and design schools. However, it was ignored. Pushed to the limit, several public art and design schools in danger – in Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Angoulême, Valenciennes in particular – have launched a mobilization to denounce the disengagement of the State in the face of their economic difficulties. Their cry? “Without public money, no public…

If you're talking about my tags then :
Yeah all those I searched on did :]. Though for some of them it was only through exchange program with others schools, but other also accept independent inscription. Though you gotta have a good level of french already.
One of the schools I looked into had like 30% of their students that were foreign ones.
If you were talking about the ressources put here then I guess they do since they're lessons on the internet ?
Can't afford art school?
After seeing post like this 👇

And this gem 👇
Tumblr media
As well as countless of others from the AI generator community. Just talking about how "inaccessible art" is, I decided why not show how wrong these guys are while also helping anyone who actually wants to learn.
Here is the first one ART TEACHERS! There are plenty online and in places like youtube.
📺Here is my list:
Proko (Free)
Marc Brunet (Free but he does have other classes for a cheap price. Use to work for Blizzard)
Aaron Rutten (free)
BoroCG (free)
Jesse J. Jones (free, talks about animating)
Jesus Conde (free)
Mohammed Agbadi (free, he gives some advice in some videos and talks about art)
Ross Draws (free, he does have other classes for a good price)
SamDoesArts (free, gives good advice and critiques)
Drawfee Show (free, they do give some good advice and great inspiration)
The Art of Aaron Blaise ( useful tips for digital art and animation. Was an animator for Disney)
Bobby Chiu ( useful tips and interviews with artist who are in the industry or making a living as artist)
Second part BOOKS, I have collected some books that have helped me and might help others.
📚Here is my list:
The "how to draw manga" series produced by Graphic-sha. These are for manga artist but they give great advice and information.
"Creating characters with personality" by Tom Bancroft. A great book that can help not just people who draw cartoons but also realistic ones. As it helps you with facial ques and how to make a character interesting.
"Albinus on anatomy" by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Great book to help someone learn basic anatomy.
"Artistic Anatomy" by Dr. Paul Richer and Robert Beverly Hale. A good book if you want to go further in-depth with anatomy.
"Directing the story" by Francis Glebas. A good book if you want to Story board or make comics.
"Animal Anatomy for Artists" by Eliot Goldfinger. A good book for if you want to draw animals or creatures.
"Constructive Anatomy: with almost 500 illustrations" by George B. Bridgman. A great book to help you block out shadows in your figures and see them in a more 3 diamantine way.
"Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and expand" by Burne Hogarth. A book that shows how to block out shapes and easily understand what you are looking out. When it comes to human subjects.
"An Atlas of animal anatomy for artist" by W. Ellenberger and H. Dittrich and H. Baum. This is another good one for people who want to draw animals or creatures.
Etherington Brothers, they make books and have a free blog with art tips.
As for Supplies, I recommend starting out cheap, buying Pencils and art paper at dollar tree or 5 below. For digital art, I recommend not starting with a screen art drawing tablet as they are more expensive.
For the Best art Tablet I recommend either Xp-pen, Bamboo or Huion. Some can range from about 40$ to the thousands.
💻As for art programs here is a list of Free to pay.
Clip Studio paint ( you can choose to pay once or sub and get updates)
Procreate ( pay once for $9.99)
Blender (for 3D modules/sculpting, ect Free)
PaintTool SAI (pay but has a 31 day free trail)
Krita (Free)
mypaint (free)
FireAlpaca (free)
Libresprite (free, for pixel art)
Those are the ones I can recall.
So do with this information as you will but as you can tell there are ways to learn how to become an artist, without breaking the bank. The only thing that might be stopping YOU from using any of these things, is YOU.
I have made time to learn to draw and many artist have too. Either in-between working two jobs or taking care of your family and a job or regular school and chores. YOU just have to take the time or use some time management, it really doesn't take long to practice for like an hour or less. YOU also don't have to do it every day, just once or three times a week is fine.
Hope this was helpful and have a great day.

When I was a TA for the freshman art class in senior year my students really adored me. It was so sweet. I’d had classes that were more ambivalent toward me but these guys were all about me.
I loved working with that teacher too. He was the kind of crunchy art nerd whose own kid didn’t know what candy was, who loved bird watching and wearing tweed. We’d chat while they worked and it was just a three hour pleasure rather than work.
When the class switched from charcoal to gouache a devil medium, the evilest watercolor, the students struggled. We’d have in class painting where they’d spend the whole time trying to mix one color instead of just accepting something as good enough and trying to practice other skills.
So one day I showed up to my shift and announced, “I have stickers. If you get color down for the whole composition, you get a sticker.
They wanted. The stickers. So bad. Students who had agonized before about keeping lines neat and perfect plowed ahead. The first student to call me over I tsked at. “Putting grey on everything doesn’t count,” I chided, “I asked for colors on each object.”
The classroom worked in furious joy, young adults who had seen my bird and cactus stickers and gone feral. The teacher was flabbergasted. “Why do they want stickers? They could just buy stickers…”
I held up my water bottle and showed him a tiny 3D bubble sticker the program director had brought to my game teams space last week. “You never grow out of wanting to earn a sticker.”
By the end of class everyone had a sticker. There was more visible improvement in the work too, which surprised them since they’d been rushing. “Gouache looks terrible before it looks good. It’s okay to start messy and then refine.” The teacher had said the same thing but looking at their frantic sticker paintings they finally saw the truth of it.

Reluctant Reader Wednesday: Bunt! Striking Out on Financial Aid by Ngozi Ukazu & Mad Rupert
Molly Bauer had big dreams for studying art in college. She was excited about getting a full-ride scholarship to PICA (an art school that’s a lot like SCAD in Savannah), but her first day turned into a disaster. When Molly got to the school, she found out that she wasn’t listed in their student records, and soon she discovered that her scholarship was gone.
But Molly won’t let her dreams die that easily. She does what she can (including taking out loans) to pay her tuition. She also goes through all of PICA’s financial aid documents, and that’s when she finds a loophole that might save her, in the form of an athletic scholarship. If Molly can create a softball team, recruit nine other art students to join her, and they win one game. then they will win a huge athletic scholarship.
But … can they actually make that happen?
Give this graphic novel to teens who are fans of Ukazu’s Check, Please series, as well as any readers who enjoy stories about sports, art, teamwork, and friendship.

bring back zooterkins, the best 17th-century swear word
I don't normally do Just Characters Swearing, but. ...this kind of wrote itself and then wouldn't leave my head. it comes from both a piece of character-writing advice that has always stuck with me, and also my conviction that Leona is 1000% funnier as a character if his dialogue has to stay G-rated. let Kalim say fuck, but don't let Leona say bastard.
(I'm sorry)
