had an excuse to list a few physical books I love for furthering your art practice

so it seemed worthwhile to crosspost in case anyone else was interested!

For just getting the painting-studies-from-life fire lit under you, I recommend Hawthorne on Painting : https://store.doverpublications.com/0486318745.html -- it's a collection of lecture notes from the cape cod school of art, and there's no pictures, and that seems so counter-intuitive, but the sheer passion for light and colour that shines through honestly is really inspiring. The core concept I took from it is that a painting study doesn't require expert knowledge of anatomy, perspective, structure etc; just a passion for seeing colour, and then putting the right colour down in the right shaped mark in the right place; a simple and infinitely difficult skill to learn and a great way to get out of your own head when the subject matter feels overwhelming. It's a very affordable little pocket-sized book and you can likely track down a used version as it's been a classic for a long time.

For more visual instruction, another classic-and-affordable book I have used to the point of disrepair is Jack Hamm's Drawing Scenery: Landscapes and Seascapes : https://www.penguinrandomhouse.ca/books/352897/drawing-scenery-seascapes-and-landscapes-by-jack-hamm/9780399508066 -- it starts with the bare bones of composition, but it goes into amazing detail on all sorts of elements of scenery from trees to skies to lighting and more. I keep his spread of Types of Clouds bookmarked for easy reference!

And for the fun of discovery and clear, direct instruction, I've really liked the Think When You Draw books : http://theetheringtonbrothers.blogspot.com/ -- while this isn't my personal visual style, they have such great, punchy, memorable instruction on such a huge, wide array of subjects, it's been a great tool to get me over the "okay but cars/bikes/horses/spaceships are HARD" etc threshold!

And finally for figure drawing, the book that really unlocked drawing people for me was Ron Tiner's Figure Drawing Without a Model : https://www.scribd.com/doc/103174602/Ron-Tiner-Figure-Drawing-Without-a-Model -- he covers a few different mental models of the figure to help build it from the ground up in your mind, and he connects these models very clearly to real life anatomy, drawing from life, and character design. Again, not a visual style I personally pursue, but immensely useful concepts that I still use today, 24 or so years after I first read this book, whenever I draw without a reference.

And I always recommend hitting up a used bookshop or two for some collections of art that inspires you -- even if it isn't your chosen medium, or subject matter, or style, if it gets your brain running then why not spend some time with it and see what you can get out of the book? Personally I always come back to my collections of Frank Frazetta, Rodney Matthews, Edward Hopper, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and Caravaggio artwork, and most of those were random used bookshop discoveries.

Lois, born and raised in London, England, joined the SOEs at Bletchley Circle to make a difference to the war effort. She had a good eduction and was already fluent in French and German. She is effective and methodical with her job but not always in her love life. She’s been hurt by men before and so had sworn off love until she met a certain Lieutenant Winters and then everything just seemed to fall into place. Working alongside Easy Company was never going to be an easy feet, especially with the love hate relationship she has going on with Lieutenant Nixon and her friend, Kate’s, relationship with a certain Private Malarkey.

Josephine Nixon (nee Wills)

Josephine Wills was born in Ramsbury and grew up in Littlecote House. She studied Literature at Oxford university until the war began and her parents called her home where they were later evicted from Littlecote House by the government to use their house as regimental HQ for the 506 PIR. Josie never expected to fall for an American, especially not Easy Company’s Intelligence Officer, Lewis Nixon. But love is strange and when Lewis is sent overseas Josie will do anything in her power to follow him. Josie joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment to play her part in the war, working alongside medics and nurses on the front line to make a difference and she loves her job, but loosing patients takes it toll on her.

Florence Lark

Florence had always had an exceptionally beautiful voice. She was working at the local factory when the war broke out and having seen signs for the ENSA she went for an audition. She loved signing for the troops, raising their morale. Her job incidentally took her to Aldbourne where she met David Webster after D-Day. The pair soon became close, bonding over books and art that they loved, and of course music. Florence never expected to fall in love with him but no one could resist his boyish good looks and ch arming personality. But while the war was still raging in Europe the couple had a lot of trails to get through before they can be happy together.

Hugh Armstrong

Hugh was training as an engineer before Pearl Harbour. He quickly answered the call and trained as a pilot joining the 100th Bomb Group flying B-17 Flying Fortress’ across Europe. He is a kindhearted man who had a deep love and admiration for his sister who flies alongside him. He’s very good at boosting morale and will always be ready to have a laugh and a joke. He also gets his fellow pilots involved in multiple baseball games because he’d always loved the sport and it really brings them all together.

Hope Armstrong

She joined up shortly after her brother, training as a flight nurse to help evacuate wounded soldiers from combat zones and provide them with medical care until they reached a hospital. She worked as an orderly in a hospital before the war and dreamed of training as a nurse. She would often fly the Douglas C-47, as well as working in the back with the wounded soldiers. Although her squadron, the Ninth Air Force 806th Medical Evacuation Squadron is based in Berkshire they often land at airfields around England which is incidentally how she finds herself landing in Dickleburgh one day and running into her brother Hugh and the 100th Bomb Group.

Julian Owens

Julian was original born in Wales but he moved to Aldbourne with his parents when he was a teenager. He soon became fast friends with Josie and Jess and the three were inseparable. However, when Julian was a teenager his family moved to New England in the States but he often visited his friend during his summer breaks. Living in the States incidentally cause him to join the 101st Airborne and become a member of Easy Company so when his unit were stationed in Aldbourne Julian was reunited with his childhood friends and their adventures continue throughout the war.

William Beaumont

William Beaumont is a Lancaster Bomber pilot in the RAF. He grew up in Ramsbury and his family were very close to the Wills family. Both William and Josephine’s parents think they would make a good match and William is rather sweet on Josie but despite William’s charm and charisma Josie’s heart belongs to another. But in a world riddled with death and destruction who will come out on top.

Violet Elwood

Violet was born in Morgan City, Louisiana in 1923. She first meets Eugene Roe when he stumbles into her families shop with his sisters and from there their story begins. But Violet has a devastating secret that she’s keeping and it’s sure to break Eugene’s heart. They can only hope their love endures and it doesn’t die as a summer romance.

BIOGRAPHY:

Leta was born on April 1st as one of a pair of twins. They came into the world together, and somehow it always seemed to remain that way. From an early age on Leta was protective of her brother, always wanting to assure he was happiest as he could; or as happy as she could help him be. While Evan seemed to be held on a tight leash by their father, Leta herself was taken under her mother's wing. It was there that she observed and learnt the art of wearing a mask at any given time, frequently changing between the young girl that could behave according to etiquette and the free and wild spirit burning to learn anything she could get her fingers on.

Early on it became clear, during the many dance, embroidery and etiquette lessons that the young witch had a talent for the arts and loved the creativity that came with designing her own things. What started out as the ideas of a child would one day grow to be the ideas of a respected designer. Until then many years would pass, years filled with a desire to better herself. Language classes were eventually added to the mix. Naturally a french she picked up English with ease and eventually added Norwegian to the mix as a part of her wondered if their parents would perhaps sent the children to Durmstrang. The latter was disproved when their Hogwarts letter arrived.

Slytherin. It didn't even take the hat a second before he called out what Leta Rosier had known all along. The witch was far too determined, too stubborn and ambitious to let go, far too cunning with her ever changing mask to be at home in any of the other houses. Even though she was fine with friends from other houses, so long as they lived up to bloodstatus expectation, she very much felt the most herself among the other Slytherins.

At age fifteen the twins lost their parents. The scene was horrendous, Leta having seen the aftermath mere minutes before her brother had. In an attempt to protect him, entirely in the unknown that her brother was doing the same, she kept quiet. To this day her act of protecting her brother and putting him first hasn't changed.

Leta buried herself in her school work, began designing even more to the point where she started out by working on designs for friends who needed an attire here or there. Eventually her skills improved further, securing her a spot with a design tutor and an internship at Madam Malkin's. From there on she progressed, rising through the ranks until eventually hard work, ambition and skill led to her becoming one of the top designers of the store, with plenty of private clients and her own atelier within the manor. It was how she came to spend most of her time, reveling in the power of knowing her clothes are what dresses plenty of their society; from the standard Hogwarts robes to fancier dresses and suits. Recently she's begun working on protective dueling suits and accessories to aid the fight she believes in.

As a fellow queer person who enjoys BL, I'm curious about your thoughts on how BL is treated in (western) queer spaces. I find that the general consensus is that Asian BL/yaoi is problematic, fetishistic smut made for and by het women. However movies like Call Me By Your Name are praised, despite sharing many tropes with BL. Do you think this belief comes from the origins of yaoi being targeted to women, or is it just because it comes from Asia its treated as a lesser art form?

I think it's all of the above.

The sales & marketing, political, and narrative disenfranchisement is a factor of the target audience (primarily women) which means misogyny is primarily in play. (To accuse it of fetishization, for example, has in part to do with a core societal belief that women should not desire or have sexual agency, so if they like a think because it turns them on it must be fringe and disgusting) which makes this aspect a feminist issue.

The content, in terms of featured characters (who are queer) makes a large portion of BL's being disregarded as a (primarily) happy approach to a gay romance, at its core a homophobic stance. Which makes fighting for recognition as a queer narrative that ends happily (problematic or not) a queer rights issue. Even within queer spaces.

And finally the west chronically ignoring the BL genre (and Asian dramas in general) by dismissing them as either incomprehensible (because of a non-3-act structure, or the requirement to read subtitles), valueless, difficult to access, or less worthy stylistically (use of slapstick humor, sound effects) is primarily due to taste which is usually a matter of upbringing and social/familial pressure. This means whether or not a person *likes* a BL is mismatched with an ability to understand why anyone else would or should like them (judgement). Which is a core mismatch of empathy and worldview around the function of pop culture in any given socio-cultural space, so yes: racism in in play. That's in part going to be a matter of eduction, openness to experience and alternate life pathways, and objective flexibility. Which means it is a compassion and race relations issues.

Yeah, so BL has an uphill battle not just in marketing, acceptance, and content, but also in understanding. The most common question you're likely to get is not just "why do you like it?" but "Why would anyone?"

A choice she didn't regret. ✦ Bellatrix fit right in with the others, easily becoming part of the crowd and taking charge when needed. Future Plans

Bellatrix is aware of what's expected of her. While incapable of carrying on the Black family name it has been made clear that finding a good match to continue the bloodline at the very least on into is of the utmost importance. Yet the witch desires to have fun and live a little before settling down entirely. If life and time allows for it she desires to work in the Genealogy Department within the french Ministry of Magic or remain with the British Ministry of Magic as a curator and historian within the Department of Magical Artifacts.

When not at home she can be found baking in the school kitchens of Hogwarts. Only close friends know and she's sure to make Lucius try her baked and cooked goods. ✦ Loves dark blue roses and white lilies the most out of all the flowers despite their controversial meaning ✦ Despite her strong belief in blood purity and the value within it, she doesn't find an issue with the occasional or casual relationship between purebloods and others as long as those of purer blood are aware that it can be nothing more than a game to be played and dropped at a moments notice ✦ Bellatrix' middle name 'Eris' comes from the ancient greek goddess of chaos and discord.
