Well I will be goddamned.

Today, January 23rd 2025, I got an email with a contract attached for a show at that local gallery/museum. A show for April 4 to May 11. Now, if my friend was correct - the decision to include me was made last spring. But no one notified me until NOW. On one level I am happy about it. But - if I'd known this last year I could have been working toward some specific goals! I can finish a couple of larger, 'showier' pieces between now and then, if I push. Damn.

Well. Guess I need to get cracking on some things.

Art Show

So, I'm doing something wrong, or existing wrong, or something, and I sure wish I knew what to do different. I'm confident in my art skills. I know how good I am, and also several things I hope to improve on as the years go on. But. BUT. I can't seem to get juried into shows that aren't in my immediate area (such as the statewide arts council shows). I can't seem to get solo shows in galleries despite a fair number of applications. (argh. argh.)

Just one example, last winter I applied for a show in a somewhat ritzy local gallery/museum. One of my older friends is on the board of directors there, and she encouraged me to apply. By May, when I hadn't heard anything back, I sent her a note asking politely if she had any feedback for me about what I could do better in applying, since I assumed I had not been selected. She responded that I HAD been selected to have a show for for next year, but the board was trying to figure out whether it would be a solo show or have one other person. [Personally, I be delighted to have a duo show with another person who has a different medium; I think that gives better exposure for both artists.] "Don't talk about it yet," she told me, but. Yeah. I was 'in'. However, it is now almost the end of summer - and I haven't heard anything from the gallery YET?!

And none of the other galleries I applied to earlier this year ever responded at all. I'm just baffled. What do I have to DO to get myself some exposure? The state-level art council typically only selects artists from the larger, metro areas for their shows. When I look at some of the paintings they DO choose for some shows, I am very underwhelmed. It's all so opaque. Grr. Sorry for the rant.
