[14] Nimbus Try I: Arpeggio of Hurt Steel
The closer the new Black Fleet came to German waters, the more nervous Zeitwächter became.
She tried not to show it, but Kongō had unfortunately learned how to read her well.
With time they had met some of the ships coming from Italy, so it was most likely safe to say that Vanisher was truly gathering all the ships under her rule – that also meant that she knew exactly where Musashi's forces were and that they were gathered in one place.
Well, Kongō never had had a high opinion of Musashi, not even when she was the Admiralty Code's most loyal follower, so she wasn't truly surprised by the questionable placing of forces.
If you planned on waging war against all of humanity, wouldn't it be wiser to leave your forces distributed as they were so that they could act faster?
Kongō understood that she had killed almost the entire American Fleet of Fog – the only survivors one or the other Fletcher-class ships simply because of their sheer numbers and their patrol duties on the outermost rims of their territory – and that I-401 and her fleet had killed a lot of Nagara, but had their numbers truly dwindled to such an amount?
She couldn't really believe it, but it was possible.
Nevermind that:
Once they were close enough, Vanitas came towards them, bow cutting the water like butter, to escort them further: "The harbour's already pretty stuffed. We've arranged parking spots in the open water in front of it."
"Very well", Kongō said, secretly happy that they wouldn't be confined as close to land simply because she wasn't looking forward to the eventual confrontation between Zeitwächter and Brokencore, "lead the way."
The destroyer did so, moving quickly but not too fast to lead them to a spot close to the other ships but with more than enough distance to be fully mobile and free in movement: "Queenie asked us to contribute those under you", she handed both Mental Models stacks of paper neatly arranged in a folder.
They had to lean over their railings while Vanitas stood on hers: "Is that the handout for the briefing?"
Vanitas grinned at Zeitwächter, knowledge of an inside joke gleaming in her eyes: "Fleet movements and placements of the past week. Includes pointers, names and observations of available weaponry as well as Akashi's repair sorties."
Kongō noted Hiei's Mirror Ring System with surprise – good to know.
Zeitwächter was also flying over the pages vaguely, stopping once or twice when something caught her attention: "I might get sad once we're not handed paper anymore."
Vanisher handed them out because of paranoia, simple as that.
While the firewalls she and SW2 had erected were pretty much impenetrable, they couldn't be 100 % certain and thus handed out orders and information with such an importance as those in paper – even the paper was made from Vanisher's nanomaterials and would disappear the moment it had become obsolete.
"It's not like you can keep them anyway", Vanitas said.
"Yeah yeah. Listen, are the folders new?"
The destroyer blinked, confused: "Why?"
She held the folder up: "I've got questions."
There was nothing unusual per se, except the big words "Blohm & Voss Kiel" on the backside.
Vanitas burst out laughing.
Zeitwächter was lightly laughing along: "What is this?? Since when are we sponsored and what's even more important, why is it on the back???"
Catching herself, the blue haired girl grinned: "Queenie was meeting with the Blohm & Voss guys."
Which was fine! They were allied!
"Apparently they had a bunch of misprinted giveaways and are now trying to pass them on to practically everyone. I heard she laughed a bit too loud so the employees that know her well challenged themselves with foisting as much as possible."
"Which she of course accepted."
"Freebies", shrugged Vanitas, "if you ask here for absolutely anything now you're getting handed B&V merch."
Zeitwächter hummed, then turned to the nearest ship and called: "Tenshi, I need a new pen! Do you have one you don't need or want?"
Tenshi, as if she had done so her entire life, whipped out an entire box of pens, reached in and threw a fountain pen over (all without breaking eye-contact with Yōkai or stopping their conversation).
The battleship caught the writing utensil with both hands and turned it around for a bit: ""Blohm & Boss" – well, that's a new one."
It certainly was.
She played around with her new pen until things got serious and she had to put it down to watch the dramatic entrance of the flagships.
Vanisher, silver hull and blue light, was flanked by Aldebaran, Parasite, Brokencore and…
And Zeitwächter just realised that she had asked Tenshi to give her that pen. Tenshi who was a part of their hierarchy as flagship and should therefore have also been at the front and replacing Brokencore because Brokencore sure as hell was not one.
Admittedly, Brokencore, as self-assigned bodyguard of her "Lord", had a valid excuse, but you know.
Zeitwächter looked over the assembled ships again.
Oh.
Oh.
Brokencore couldn't see her from there because of the way the Tenshi-class was placed.
Since Yōkai was mostly black and Tenshi mostly white, placing Zeitwächter behind them and Kongō immediately afterwards essentially meant that you wouldn't really see Zeitwächter at all!
God, she loved her half-sister so much; hail to Vanisher for one thousand years!
Unaware of her realisation, the ships came to a halt, with Aldebaran having been chosen as spokesperson this time around: "We gratefully note that all of you have arrived. I take it you all have looked at the intel?”
A chorus of various affirmations answered her.
Aldebaran nodded: “Excellent. As you have no doubt witnessed, Musashi has revealed her intention of a final war with humanity and set a limit – after conferring with our allies, it was made clear that they will let the week pass and not agree to her terms.”
"Good."
"Would have balked if they did."
She waited for the mutterings to pass: "Those of you who haven't gotten a check-up yet please report back with Melody and Scarback and then with either Parasite, Vanisher or me.
Afterwards we shall elaborate on the orders written down in your folders and march northwards to support the Blue Fleet. Kongō."
Kongō looked up, hiding the surprise in her expression – why was the flagship singling her out?
"I was informed that you wish to leave earlier than the others?"
"Correct."
"Very well", Aldebaran nodded, "then you and Zeitwächter are first."
"Understood."
The blonde stepped back and Zeitwächter and her shared a glance.
What Aldebaran said after that sounded like a standard epilogue for a speech like that and it was indeed over shortly afterwards.
Kongō waited with her movement for a while since Brokencore was still obviously staring in their direction and sent a silent thanks to whoever was listening when Vanisher turned and took the offending battleship with her.
"You do know that we have to go into the direction of the port as well, yes?", Zeitwächter asked.
"Yes", she waited for a few more moments before moving after them, "do I have to drag you?"
"Mean!", Zeitwächter whined. -- Melody and Scarback weren't just sisters, going by their Mental Models they were identical twins.
Both had long brown hair, wore a white summer dress, red neckerchief and white doctor's coats to top it off. They were also really soft beans.
"Any new errors, Zeitwächter?", one of them tapped away at her screens.
"No."
"Any other problems?"
"None that won't show up in your scans."
Melody nodded with a smile: "Then you're good to go."
"Thanks", Zeitwächter said and ruffled Churchgrim's fur, "how's Kongō?"
The repair ship looked over at her sister and the fast battleship she was tending to: "She seems to be alright, but… I didn't think that she would."
Zeitwächter was focused on her words, but had her eyes fully on the dog turning to goo under her hands: "You didn't?"
"Assimilating… assimilating her fleet and then turning into that… put a big strain on her Union Core – it could have damaged her quite badly."
"I never doubted Kongō."
But she had feared for her. For the longest of times Zeitwächter thought that Kongō would die and it had been the second most stressful and terrifying moment of her life.
Melody looked at her for a while, burying her hands in the front of her dress: "Zeitwächter, I…"
Their eyes met, but Zeitwächter's weren't the usual of wildfire – they were calm and deep like embers in a heap of ash.
Those were the eyes of a tired Zeitwächter, the face behind the mask, so to say.
Melody averted her eyes and wouldn't continue her sentence, so Zeitwächter looked away again as well, a knowing look gracing hers.
"When's your sister finished?"
"Oh, about now, why?"
She nodded towards the waterway where Vanisher and her legendary shadow of a Brokencore came towards them: "I could need a human shield."
Immediately, repair ship 1 and 2 went on high alert – they had enough experience with fixing wounds received through Brokencore's temper to rightfully fear the potential bullshit coming their way.
Scarback sent Kongō over to the other black hulled ship and then both twins moved their Mental Models in front of the others, smiling in a welcoming way.
Zeitwächter, still sitting on her crate, shared a look with the blonde, who returned it with crossed arms and a sceptic look towards the fleet flagship.
Said flagship was escorted down from her ship by Brokencore like a legitimate princess and was now moving towards the five others with a relaxed gate.
Brokencore smelled like murder.
Vanisher stopped in a normal distance from the group which didn't cancel out Brokencore's natural looming at all: "Are they both well?"
"Yes!", the twins answered in synch, "they both are healthy!"
"Good", she cocked her head a bit as if confused by their nervousness, "I want to leave her here as port defense, would that be alright?"
Zeitwächter, who could feel her eyes on her, nodded: "Of course, Aneue."
It was nothing that would break their deal.
"I also… have something a bit more personal. Brokencore, please wait here until I come back."
The battleship was about to blow a fuse – she just didn't know on who.
Vanisher moved closer to Zeitwächter and Kongō, leading them out of view: "Please consider this a topic of utmost secrecy."
Kongō shared another look with her relatively new fleet member, both doubtful and tense to a similar amount.
"I sent SW2 out a good time ago", Vanisher began rummaging in what Kongō assumed to be pockets under her coat, "I think you met her, but what I actually wanted from her was this."
In one of her hands was the Union Core of Nagara and in the other… in the other was that of Maya.
Kongō's world came to a halt, her body wasn't sure whether to back away or jump forward, her tongue and jaw felt simultaneously very heavy and very light – hell, she barely realised the supporting arm Zeitwächter had positioned behind her.
"Aneue, I thought she was destroyed!"
The Union Core certainly wasn't the best looking thing anymore, fine scars running almost over every spot of its surface and also locked in autistic mode, but she was alive.
"She mostly was", now that she wasn't courting Brokencore to abide her will anymore, her voice was harder and more real, "your new flagship did good work, but didn't swallow her fully. I sent SW2 out to gather Nagara, but told her to look for that of Maya while she was on the way already."
Zeitwächter looked down at the Core when it was pressed into her hand.
"Stabilizing her wasn't easy, but we managed and now I think it's time for you to cultivate her back into the world of the living" she looked to Kongō, "Nagara would like to be part of your fleet again, if you'll have her."
Kongō… honestly? Kongō felt like she would crash.
Grabbing onto reality with the desperation of a drowning man crying for air, she mutely took the light cruiser's Union Core.

Five years ago today, Corduroy Institute's series of 2018 EPs concluded with the release of The Berlin-Santiago Conference.
https://corduroyinstitute.bandcamp.com/album/the-berlin-santiago-conference
This EP, along with The Santiago-Berlin Symposium, captured the sound of Corduroy Institute reconvening in Southern California after the sojourns that took the duo's members to Europe and South America. We returned to our established methodology and picked up our instruments with an élan that compelled us to create eight songs in a mere two months. These twin EPs allowed us to explore new compositional elements such as arpeggio sequences, layered synthesizers, microtunings, and field recordings. Fundamentally, however, we focused on crafting experimental pop song by multitracking improvised music and singing lyrics derived from cut-ups.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Santiago-Berlin Symposium and The Berlin-Santiago Conference mark the conclusion of a particular way of presenting our music. All of our 2018 work was delivered in four-song EPs whose tracks were sequenced chronologically. In subsequent years, we shifted towards mini-LP and LP-length statements. We also focused more on arranging the flow of the album, often leading to stray tracks in need of a context.
The Berlin-Santiago Conference can currently be downloaded or streamed, and its contents appear on the limited edition cassette tape DEU-CHL available on our Bandcamp page.

Announcing our postcard contest winner!
On the back of our postcard we’re featuring an amazing drabble by @learningthomas -- you can read it below!
When All Might can't do anything else, he plays. He performs like he used to, back before the world was on fire and he should have been too.
He's never been one for quick arpeggios, lilting melodies. All Might? He prefers long, layered chords, a development that carries through an entire piece until its climax. He reveres the build-up, the release: the constants he's chosen to cling to. It's the hope that one day, any minute now, he may look up from the ivory keys and see that everything has become anew again.
He plays, steady on into the night.
Thank you to all who participated! This bonus postcard will be available in all merch bundles on July 1st when our preorders open. We’ll be waiting eagerly in the wings!

  Live From Austin:
SUNN O)))
  Big|Brave & Papa M.
~Words & Photographs by Drew Nesbitt~
My initial exposure to the doom, stoner, sludge, and drone scene came back in 2016, when Sleep, Boris, and Sunn O))) were the showcase located at The Mohawk. It was a legendary set that didn’t hold my appreciation until far after I engrossed myself in the taste of these subgenres. I left that show feeling uncertain and relatively uncomfortable at the time, as my background and taste was based on technical, melodical, fast, or grind and slam or the like. It wasn’t until the moment that I met my future brother-in-law (who mentioned that he missed this very show during a conversation on our music tastes and was super bummed) that I was assigned to explore all that Sunn’s catalog had to offer.
Monoliths & Dimensions by SUNN O)))
I had given Monoliths a few playthroughs while driving through town to wash out the commotion of traffic and keep my nerves on track (something I quickly observed provided quite a relaxing atmosphere during a commute). I ended up buying the vinyl a week or so after that, just to drone out to and find new experiences through each listen, without any outside pressure or any specific task that required my full and complete attention. I was finding this one LP to be an incredibly effective form of therapy for a variety of different occurrences I was dealing with in life at the time, and it is currently one of my all-time most cherished possessions.
Tumblr media
My little listening sessions went by over the next few weeks and months, when Life Metal was announced. I couldn’t be more elated at the idea of being able to add more material to my collection of personal therapy. Fresh, new frequencies that the world and I can experience together. Fuck me, man. Upon my first initial reaction, it was game on. That moment was as real as it gets. Every day -- in the truck, at work -- there was a fucking will and there was a way to get my ass to see them live again in my lifetime, with full presence, understanding, and utmost appreciation to make up for the last.
Life Metal by SUNN O)))
Months Later
Then came the announcement: September 2nd, 2019 -- Sunn O))) at Emo's Austin on East Riverside Drive in Austin, Texas.
Tumblr media
You kidding me? Like fucking for real? *instant ticket purchase* After the weeks pass by, it’s game day. Could I get something out of this show that I had only heard about? That pure experience of saturation? That body high that I missed out on before? The full understanding and appreciation? These were just a few thoughts that I was getting increasingly anxious and excited over.
Accompanying me was my sister, brother-in law, his close friend, and some friends that I’ve accrued over the years within the local scene -- all there to share the night with me, something I would equate to one of the most incredible musical experiences of my life.
Open Doors, Setting
Tumblr media
Upon doors open, there was a line at the merch stand that lengthed from the back of the venue all the way past the entry. This increased rapidly as more listeners poured in and stayed this way for a majority of the night. Would anyone take the chance at getting the Earthquaker collaboration Life Pedal?
There was a drape casted over the production backline about three quarters back into the venue, quartering the bar and merch sections that could obstruct the lighting production on the other side. This was a great call, as it kept the stage during Sunn’s set at a 100% fog-to-the-max presence. Something eerie, yet so right.
Tumblr media
BIG|BRAVE
Tumblr media
The initial stroke of the percussion provided an overbearing and booming thump for listeners to guide themselves with. Shortly, melodies and chords begin to introduce themselves.
A Gaze Among Them by B I G | B R A V E
Two minutes in, the crowd has begun to synchronize head bobbing and full attention is at the stage beyond the drapes. Big Brave's presence on stage was immaculate, with the drummer’s kit being the centerpiece and source of radiant light for vocalist/guitarist right and lead guitarist left.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The vocals came out as an element of desperation, with backing of climactic drones from the strings, and the ever-present primal build of the drums. Violent lashing out of chords, increasing build up, and absolute invention of release characterised the performance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Introduced mid-set, the lead guitarist produced a string bow to create a hymn of ultimate expression to pair with the lingering and cast out vocals. The physical acquisition of feedback elements from the group’s stage gear was a large and reinforced part of the set, perfectly executed to provide elements of unexpected turns throughout each song.
Tumblr media
PAPA M.
Tumblr media
Lonesome man. Silhouette drawn and clear. Mysticism in darkness. Yet comforting and responsive to only his own answers.
Tumblr media
Papa M.'s performance can be best described as a graceful walk through the essence of spiritual being. The arpeggios and progression of his set began with a sense of an individual on some path, destination unknown.
However, confident and unwavered by any objections represented by the synth effects halfway through, it was like being walked through a shaman’s vision with a rumbling purpose and a humble triumph at curtains.
Tumblr media
After a quick break in the smoke pit to gather my thoughts, and group up with friends, I headed back in for the mainstay.
Tumblr media
SUNN O)))
Reentry into the venue. Wall of fog. Tension, uncertainty, confusion, anxiety, disparity, withdrawal. Could this representation of what I was looking for be a true answer to what I couldn’t appreciate before?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The stage was represented with almost zero visibility and complete amnesty. The first chord is cast. Instantly the crowd is in unison. A physical sound that could not escape, but be completely consumed by the listener. Being in the back it was amazing to the effect it had on the listener. Observing that each individual was in grasp of this physical wave of sound -- a few of them lost in it, just like myself during my listening sessions.
Film by The Dead Texan
Getting my way up to the barricade was something I would compare to walking through a horde. Feeling the shake of the foundation kept me on my wits as I was weaving through the crowd. 30 minutes in, and I can see that Sunn has enveloped the entirety of the crowd with the most mesmerizing drone of sound that I can’t even begin to explain. Every individual just there listening, stricken, guided by frequencies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After completing all of my busywork, I get directed by the venue cadre to deposit my belongings accordingly, then hustle back in to enjoy the set. At this point, I’ve found my sister and brother and just watch. Moments go by, colors change, omnipresence solidifies. I begin to find myself close to those listening sessions. Standing, and mentally outside of myself, I was hypnotized -- able to understand what I couldn’t before. Our bodies were only a tool to soak this physical form of saturation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sunn O))) live was the most insane and ultimate thing I had ever experienced in music. It was the most beautifully orchestrated masturbation of the best pieces of musical equipment I had ever witnessed. It was the first time I felt my entire body have a physical reaction to music.
Without doubt, this was the best form of therapy I’ve been a part of.

Town Mountain at Stuart's Opera House, Nelsonville, Ohio, Feb. 28, 2020
Town Mountain plays blue-collar bluegrass with rock ‘n’ roll swagger.
The North Carolina-based quintet burned through a 100-minute show in a raucous, sold-out Stuart's Opera House in Nelsonville Feb. 28, playing with the passion of a young band looking to make a mark even though it's 15 years into its career. The group returned to town after triumphant sets at the 2019 Nelsonville Music Festival and clearly brought some recent converts along for the ride.
Collars open and shirts untucked, the five players of Town Mountain - guitarist Robert Greer, banjoist Jesse Langlais, mandolin man Phil Barker, fiddler Bobby Britt and upright bassist Zach Smith - brought bluegrass unison to match the instrumentation and mixed it with flashes of straight country and bursts of rock 'n' roll.
The country comes from Greer's classic baritone and cowboy hat. He sings two-thirds of the tracks augmented by Barkers' high, lonesome tenor and Langlais' nondescript vocals, which featured on Warren Zevon's "Lawyer's, Guns and Money" and his Tyler Childers co-write "Down Low."
"What are we doing after this?" Langlais, who’s responsible for much of the band's rock attitude, asked the audience at one point.
Peeling off arpeggios more closely associated with guitar, Langalis makes the banjo sound almost like a different instrument. Greer is mostly a rhythm guitarist and Barker is Town Mountain's main soloist, weaving in and out of this bandmates' playing lanes like a speed demon making his way down a crowded freeway. The exuberance of the playing, however, is unmatched by the band's Eagles-esque stage presence, broken only when Britt and Langlais faced off in an aural set-to on the fiery final encore, Childers' "Purgatory."
Tumblr media
Split into sets of 45 and 55 minutes, respectively, the concert was expertly paced as the band worked through originals such as "House with No Windows" and "Up the Ladder" and their oft-requested cover of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm on Fire."
Standing ovations and a large gathering around the post-concert merch table confirmed Town Mountain is a band that should be playing to larger crowds paying more than $17.50 a head. But the ability to see it with just 394 other fellow music lovers is a gift in and of itself.

Double Dose of Synthwave Bliss
This has been a great week for me.  I got some new plugins and saw that Ableton Live has a new update (beta) coming soon.  Additionally, I was able to listen to some great tunes that I want to share.  Although the music that I’ve shared to date has been electronic, I plan on sharing any style of music that I like or find interesting.  This week is going to be a treat because I’m sharing two tracks that I have been really vibing on.  For those uninitiated with the genre Synthwave, I have selected some really great tunes for this week’s post.  Synthwave gains its inspiration from the synthesizer soaked music of the 1980′s, to include film scores and even video games.  Think Vangelis (The original Blade Runner movie) meets Washed Out (Portlandia main theme song). The first song that I’d like to share is by Gunship.
Tumblr media
The track that I selected to share is from the Dark All Day album released, October 5th, 2018.  The Drone Racing League is mysterious and brooding with its driving synth bass, rich filtered pads, airy leads, and sequenced arpeggios.
youtube
I really can’t get enough of this track.  It’s been on repeat for the last 30 minutes.  It’s filled with emotion and I think that’s what keeps me coming back.  Here are a few links for you all to follow, listen, and purchase their music and merch:
https://www.gunshipmusic.com
https://gunshipmusic.bandcamp.com
https://open.spotify.com/artist/3PALZKWkpwjRvBsRmhlVSS?si=XlvLdpxOSLWAAyyPRStedw
As I said early this week is a double dose.  I just couldn't decide between the two, so I figured why not share both.  The next selection is by Trevor Something.  AINIY is featured on his October 2018 album, Ultraparanoia.  This song is super spacious with big reverbs and delays, melancholy melodies, and really nice vocal processing.  A very chill song, AINIY is one of those tunes to listen to when you with someone special.  There is some more links at the bottom to help you support the artist.  Enjoy this week’s tunes, and stay tuned for next week.

Album Review: Salvation -
As Within, So Without
by Octavio Ramos
As Within, So Without
Salvation
Self-Released
Formed in 2016, New York’s As Within, So Without brought together four friends who shared a common dream driven by their love of music. The band’s core sound is metalcore, influence by bands such as Miss May I, For A King, In Hearts Wake, and Oceans Ate Alaska.
A follow-up to the band’s 2019 debut album, Into Oblivion, 2022’s Salvation consists of 11 tracks that combined create a concept album that focuses on a man’s spiritual journey toward healing. As the band notes, “Writing Salvation brought us together as friends and bandmates during an uncertain time in the band where things felt darker than ever.”
The full-length studio album kicks off the “CH III: The Undefined,” and right from the start the metalcore elements take center stage, with the guitar of Matt Tzovolos mixing hardened riffs with more progressive leads and hooks. The chugga-chugga is also present, as well as thunderous breakdowns that work well with the progressive approach. Next up is “Bloodshot,” with drummer Lukas Vitullo driving the pace with some nice stick-work, complemented by Tzovolos’ catchy licks. Out front is vocalist Mitchell Lustosa, whose screamed words are complemented by the clean vocals of Mathew Lustosa. “Oasis” kicks off with some effective keyboard effects, which feature in most tracks but are uncredited, and offer a mix of screamed vocals from Mitchell and the gentler, clean vocals of Matthew. This mix is potent, and this quickly became one of my favorite tracks.
https://youtu.be/0KQPVsB6xBY
“Visitations” returns to a previous structure, with Mathew Lustosa’s bass licks shadowing Tzovolos’ guitar riffs, which really work well here, along with some subtle keyboard washes.
“Like the Wind” is a welcome departure, one that showcases elements of hard rock combined with some effective and heartfelt harmonies, bolstered by Mathew’s clean and at-times soaring vocals. I really enjoyed this one. Up next is “Illuminate,” another metalcore composition filled with plenty of fury but also restrained by some nice drum and piano accents, followed by “My Revelation,” the turning point in the lyrical story, where the main character starts to realize what is important in life.
“Frostbite” is a straightforward rocker, with Tzovolos letting the riffs rip (complete with arpeggios), and “From the Ashes” brings with it some industrial overtones without sacrificing the intensity—its sheer rage means this one is automatically turned way, way up.
“Daydreamer” features guest vocals from Chris Roetter (Like Moths to Flames and Emarosa).
The closer, the title track, calls upon nature for salvation, “one in a world, Far from machines.”
Salvation is a solid album, one with variation in musical approach and story in lyrics that will appeal to those who have grown weary of the technology that pulls us apart instead of bringing
us together. It is a worthy cautionary tale, one that has many of us already in its clutches. Good stuff with excellent musicianship.

2. worst anime you’ve watched/
tbh I try to drop anything that is immediately and outright terrible, so if I make it through an anime, I feel bad saying it’s terrible since I enjoyed it at some point...
Anime that hurt me most deeply: Fairy Tail because fuck that. Even if I see nice fanart now, I’m not gonna reblog it because I refuse to ever support it again. If I see FT merch, I have a kneejerk reaction of annoyance. It’s just terrible.
Special mention: Tales of Zestiria X. I literally dropped it on the second to last episode. A tremendous waste of time despite being technically pretty.
3. favorite character from your favorite anime/
.....My favorite anime is probably Shirobako. Pinning down my fave character is actually kind of hard because I just love the whole thing. I guess Miyamori? I related to her a lot. Like, so much. Aside from that, I’d cop out and say the high school anime club as a whole.
Speaking of more normal anime that I enjoyed, probably one of my all time faves is Naruto. He’s probably the first shounen protag I really loved and he remains a character I really enjoy. Cute, energetic and with surprising depths at times.
4. best ending of an anime you’ve watched/
lmao there’s such a thing as good endings?
Shirobako because god, the emotional payoff in seeing the whole club together on the fighter jet show.
Favorite last episode: Zoids New Century/Zero. I can’t explain it at all, but I bought the last DVD of this show just so I could rewatch it. I just really loved when the instrumental opening theme kicks in during Liger Zero vs Berserk Fury.
Aside from that, I enjoyed Arpeggio of Blue Steel’s ending and the last ep of Thunderbolt Fantasy.
5. worst ending of an anime you’ve watched
so many....
Well, special shout out to Coffin Princess Chaika for a fundamentally pointless and inconclusive ending that managed to tank every single plot thread while theoretically completing all of them. I was... amazed... at the time.
Worst Epilogue: NARUTO I’m looking at you, I will never be able to watch Boruto because my bitterness is that deep
Worst final arc: Fairy Tail for completely betraying me and ruining character deaths as an entire concept. I will never be able to look at any death without thinking “well, we saw Juvia’s spirit watching over Gray and she came back from the dead like two chapters later, and even Makarov didn’t die despite leaving a body, so....”

I suspect that this goes too far in the other direction and the correct answer here is “both, and also neither”.
Honestly, the best way to look at this might be to compare to the one other anime with comparable impact on its genre - you know, Eva.  NGE came out in the 1995 Winter season.  For the next decade or so afterwards, AFAICT (and I’ve trawled MAL listings to double-check this before) basically every mecha show released fell into one of three categories:
- Direct responses to Eva (The Big O, RahXephon, Bokurano as a late example, and I’m pretty sure I’m forgetting another obvious one), plus the interesting case of Martian Successor Nadesico, which almost certainly has some Eva influence but came out early enough that depending on the specifics of the production process the basic concept could be either a direct response or the result of convergent evolution.  Plus, of course, Gurren Lagann, which ends the direct response period but which was itself very much a direct response precisely in how it hewed more closely to the older Super Robot tone.
- Reboots/continuations of existing properties (Tetsujin 28-gou, IIRC Gao Gai Gar counts as well, plus at least one I’m forgetting).
- Shows in the other, more realistic mecha subgenre, traditionally referred to in Western fandom of the era as Real Robot as opposed to Super Robot.  Notable examples include Full Metal Panic, Patlabor, and of course the franchise that started and dominated the subgenre: Gundam.  This subgenre mostly died out somewhere between the mid-2000s and the mid-2010s (depending on whether you count the likes of Arpeggio of Blue Steel and Knights of Sidonia as Real Robot or sci-fi with mechs), and the reason I’ve heard for this (and for the final decline of mecha more generally) is quite telling: Bandai Namco (the company that owns Gundam) cornered the market on mecha kits at around this time, to such an extent that it wasn’t worth trying to compete unless you were trying to sell something else like a manga or LN or anime merch.  (AFAIK the Imaishi-centered Gainax crew that bailed to form Trigger is absolutely in the last of those buckets, which makes sense because Gainax’s approach to Eva was in many ways the pioneer of that strategy.)
Trying to parse the equivalent process for mahou shoujo/magical girls is more difficult because by the way I learned it the genre has either three or four subgenres rather than two (I’ll grab the old TVTropes classification names here, they work as well as any), but here’s my stab at it:
Cute Witch (sometimes split into two subgenres between the older Bewitched-inspired “majokko” plot where a girl from a magical land comes to Earth and the more recent type where an Earth girl gets magical powers): With the arguable exception of Little Witch Academia (an animator passion project that IIRC also has heavy Harry Potter influence), this subgenre died out well before Madoka (somewhere between the 1990s and the mid-2000s, I think, depending on how you’d classify a couple of the more shoujo-targeted early-2000s mahou shoujo like Ojamajo Doremi, Di Gi Charat, or Shugo Chara).  (The way I hear it the series usually blamed for this happening is none other than Sailor Moon itself.)
Magic Idol Singer: AFAICT was almost completely unaffected by Madoka, and to my understanding it seems to have gotten at least some new shows into at least the early 2010s (Jewelpet seems to be a fairly clear example of the type, though admittedly S1 of that franchise predates PMMM).  I’m honestly not sure whether the subgenre is dead or just shed the more serious works to where it’s just left with kids shows that never make it to the West (there’s a few such more serious shows from the early 2000s, notably Full Moon wo Sagashite and arguably Princess Tutu, but AFAIK none after), but either way we can probably chalk the decline of the subgenre to a single game: the original Idolmaster (not using the proper spelling since I can’t predict how the hellsite programming will respond to it...), progenitor of the modern idol franchise, which came out at about exactly the right time (mid-2000s) and was a massive hit at least among otaku.  (I’m pretty sure Idolmaster predates the more shoujo-targeted idol anime, though I’m not familiar with the details of the transition or indeed exactly how much difference there is between the Aikatsus and PriParas of the world and the Magic Idol Singers before them.  That said, one note: my understanding is that Love Live is less a youth-targeted franchise and more either a direct Idolmaster competitor or a hybrid-demographic franchise much like Precure itself.)
Magical Girl Warrior: The Sailor Moon subgenre, and the one both Pretty Cure and Madoka belong to.  Here's where I suspect a one-two punch: Precure was already the biggest name in the genre (especially with Heartcatch, one of the best-regarded Precure series, having come out in 2010), and then Madoka came out and had nova-class impact on the genre... which killed off all the more traditional shows in the subgenre (in addition to the early experiments in more seinen mahou shoujo) *except* for Precure, which was big enough to survive mostly unmolested in the same way Gundam had been and which promptly proceeded to corner the toy market the same way Gundam did.  (To be clear, this cornering might well have - probably would have? - happened anyways, but Madoka ensured it and accelerated the process by years.  Didn’t help that the Nanoha franchise author hated the way the anime version had gone and it showed in Nanoha Force... and that Toei also owns the old mahou shoujo franchise that held up the best in Sailor Moon, which I had forgotten about and explains much.)
Oh my GOD Madoka isn’t the reason there aren’t many magical girl shows aimed at kids anymore. It’s because Pretty Cure is so popular it took over the market. Just listen to yourselves, imagine if people were saying Happy Tree Friends is the reason there wasn’t as many kids cartoons anymore. That’s how ridiculous you sound. People making kids shows don’t give two shits about a late night show for an older audience when it comes to their Saturday morning cartoon, they just know they can’t compete with PreCure.

Our new EP, Great Falls, is out on Dec 18th. The 2nd song, A Slow Return is out at midnight along with a pre-order of dreamy merch & album artwork designed by Stephanie Kuse. Thanks to Katalin Lakatos for a thoughtful first review <3: "There’s Talk, the Oakland-based electronic dream pop project fronted by Olivia Lee, effortlessly balances elements of experimental electronica and hazy reverb-drenched shoegaze. Lee’s music is drawn from her childhood love of electronic synthesizers and acoustic piano, her Chinese heritage, and queer identity - she writes music about family, both chosen and blood, and divine coincidence. The trio, featuring collaborators Kellen Balla and Young Lee, creates an electric sonic landscape of stunning depth and complexity and has drawn comparisons to Beach House and M83.
Their third EP “Great Falls” finds the band at the height of its powers, with crisp, prismatic production, soaring ambient guitar, and Lee’s distinctive glacial vocal melodies. Lark-like breathy harmonies weave in and out of focus amidst a dreamy wash of lush synths and cracking, layered electronic beats.  It’s a record about escape, contempt, grief, and the grave responsibility of memory - a dutiful march towards recovery.  Fractured vocal artifacts crumble around disintegrating arpeggios that sometimes swell into a rich, towering wall of sound -  like whispering behind the rush of a waterfall. Great Falls feels like narrowly outrunning a tragedy. It brings you to the edge, but just as you feel the ice cracking beneath you, it mercifully releases into a shimmering galactic pulse. Despite its darkness, and occasional descent into anger - this music insists on an abundant exploding hopefulness.” - Katalin Lakatos

Media Reflection - Akihabara and Gaming
What I Expected
Akihabara is hailed as the “geek capital” of the world, famous for their electronics and variety of merchandise for all sorts of Japanese media. Before this trip, I’d had my own mental image of what such a place would look like. I thought it’d be much smaller, like a little plaza full of a bunch of stores that sold assorted and rare anime merchandise. I’d been led on by little pictures I’d see on Tumblr of shelves of merch for series that had virtually no fanbase in America, such as these ones below. I’m a huge fan of Arpeggio of Blue Steel, and it’s extremely difficult to find it anywhere in America, even online, even more so now that it’s been years since the show’s completion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought things like maybe I’d wander into a random store that would have all of these series specific items, and that the selection would be so wide that even relatively unpopular series that had long run their brief courses of fame would be represented in such a “hotspot” for anime lovers. I’ll speak later about what I actually found.
Shopping in Akihabara
I visited Akihabara with that lofty dream I described previously in mind. I wanted to find some merch for a series almost no one has heard of, as well as rare and unique goods for other series that would be virtually nonexistent back home. My two weeks in Tokyo, I went out into the heart of Akihabara nearly every single night, googling specialty stores and specific goods to seek out in the future. Shockingly, even series I thought were popular were hardly represented at all if you weren’t looking for them. Fire Emblem, which is a phenomenon in America after the release of Awakening in 2013, was stupendously difficult to seek out. In fact, the largest selection of Fire Emblem goods I found was in Ikebukuro! The first image is of the Fates artbook I hunted down specifically in Akihabara, versus the entire Fire Emblem corner I stumbled upon in Ikebukuro in the second image (that had several Fire Emblem artbooks).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Going back to Arpeggio of Blue Steel, I visited thinking I’d find tiny goldmines full of merchandise, and that all I’d have to do was find the store selling them. I was wrong. I visited a variety of stores specializing in anime merchandise, and was surprised to find just one item. It was a printed image of a character from the show, in a gold frame, selling for 14,800 yen, hanging in the staircase next to a bunch of advertisements and other posters for sale.
Akihabara in Video Games
There are many games and shows set in Japan, some specifically in Akihabara. One such game is Persona 5, which allows you to travel to many districts in Tokyo. I know I’ve been saying all trip that I’ve never played Persona, but I definitely have, and was able to see the game’s portrayal of Tokyo and Akihabara prior to arriving in Japan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The game shows many of the electronics specialty stores Akihabara is known for, which I actually hadn’t been expecting. I thought the whole area would have been overridden with anime merchandise. Instead, there were many large department stores such as Yodobashi that would have whole floors dedicated to computers and laptops, then televisions, larger appliances, and video game consoles. Persona showed these tiny, cramped spaces filled with all sorts of electronics, which I found to be accurate to some stores I passed on the street. While there were massive department stores, there were also smaller specialty stores that would only sell one type of electronic, and some would only sell certain parts. I found Persona’s portrayal of Akihabara to be faithful, though it was a bit brighter and prettier in the game for obvious reasons.
Video Games in Akihabara
Persona and Fire Emblem are both video game series that are popular outside of Japan, so I was shocked to see how sparse their selections of merchandise were. There were two gacha machine in the entirety of Akihabara that carried Persona 5 related goods, and I was actively seeking out more gacha machines! Again, I found a larger selection in Ikebukuro than in Akihabara, and there was a Persona 5 Animation exhibition that actually took place in Shibuya with a small selection of pricey goods. I find that it’s actually easier to find Fire Emblem related clothing, accessories, and other related merchandise in America than in the country the series originated from, with the exception of officially licensed cosplay costumes. I went to a Cospa store to check out the Persona 5 school uniform in person. I also verified that it is totally not worth the seven hundred some dollars it would cost to purchase the whole set.
Tumblr media
One thing that did surprise me though, was the dedication to the games themselves. Fire Emblem Three Houses, the upcoming release for the Nintendo Switch later this summer, has been very poorly advertised in America. However, I was shocked to see a little stand dedicated to the game with the trailer playing on the TV. They even had preorders for the game and the collector’s edition available. I have seen nothing in American stores like Gamestop for Three Houses thus far.
Tumblr media
I was also stunned to see the absolutely immeasurable collection of goods for more popular series, as well as accessories. If you go to gaming stores in America, they will usually have a few small goods like shirts, plushes, and action figures, but on a single floor of a Yodobashi, I found the equivalent of an American Macy’s dedicated solely to console games. The following photos are of a mere fraction of the Nintendo accessories! I didn’t even get any pictures of the shelves upon shelves of games for the myriad of consoles represented.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When the Persona 5 Animation was just coming out around this time last year, it was actually advertised on the big digital billboards in Akihabara. The first image is of said advertisements, versus my photo from last week of the upcoming anime currently being advertised. Maybe just like Arpeggio of Blue Steel, the series had simply run its course, and I was looking for something that wasn’t “new” in Japan anymore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gaming in Akihabara
Going along with how splendidly represented the actual video games are versus their merchandise in the district, there was also a lot of physical gaming to be done. Another portrayal of Akihabara shown in Persona 5 was this arcade, where you can play on a crane machine for a chance at one of the dolls. I found this to be inaccurate, as winning anything from one of these machines is pure witchcraft, and I’m sure is actually impossible. Despite this, I found the claw machine arcade in Persona to closely resemble the ones in the Sega towers, or the Taito game station.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were no shortages of gachapon machines scattered throughout the neighborhood, and I even found entire stores dedicated solely to these machines. They could be found everywhere from the sides of stores, back alleys, train stations, and the insides of larger stores, regardless of if they sold anything game or anime related. I played a considerable amount of gacha, as it was readily available, and your chances of receiving a prize were 100%, compared to a claw machine’s 0%.
Tumblr media
Of course, there were also many arcades in Akihabara. Every pachinko place I walked past reeked of cigarettes and had loud music pouring out of it. I felt the same about the elevator up the Tower of Eternal Amusement.
Tumblr media
The Tower of Eternal Amusement, listed on Google Maps as the “Try Amusement Tower”, was the closest and most comprehensive arcade to our residence in Tokyo. It was totally different from my mental image of a Japanese arcade. It was what some people would describe as “sketchy”. It was nothing like an American Boomer’s or Dave and Buster’s. The tower’s elevator smelled like a designated smoking area, and every floor it opened on had a different variety of jarringly loud anime and Japanese music. Despite this, the arcade was actually very neat and well maintained, I saw staff wipe down the machines as people left. It was so crowded you barely had any room to walk, but this meant more cabinets, and a larger variety of games. It was totally unexpected, as I’d pictured a shimmering, clean, bright, and spacious room as an arcade in Tokyo. There were a lot of very talented gamers in there, the guys that full combo the hardest difficulties. I saw a group of friends bring gloves, camera gear, and personal drumsticks to play Taiko No Tatsujin. Needless to say, I was intimidated. Speaking of guys, every time I went to the arcade, it was only men. I only once saw a girl in the arcade, on our last night in Tokyo.
Tumblr media
PC Gaming in Akihabara
Besides just the huge floors dedicated to console gaming and multi-story arcades, I was also intrigued to see the availability of high end computer gaming stores. Along with the specialty stores that sold just computers and the department store levels dedicated to computers for gaming and work, I saw many small brand specific stores. Some of these were international brands, like American Razer, or Taiwanese MSI. I have never in all my years seen a physical Razer only store, so I couldn’t help but peer into the window when I walked past. It was filled with mice, headphones, and laptops, most of which are only available online or in limited inventory physically in America. I’d never pictured stores like these being scattered throughout Akihabara, they’re not usually on the front page of tourist websites.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Conclusions
Akihabara was less anime/manga oriented than I’d believed it to be: it was more focused on gaming and electronics. Items for characters originating from video games was generally easier to find than characters from manga and anime. The anime goods specialty stores only sold the hottest, trendiest merchandise in Japan, which didn’t necessarily translate to what was popular in America at the time. Even then, most of the stores you’d encounter walking down the streets of Akihabara sold exclusively figurines. Since I don’t like to collect figures, there wasn’t a lot for me to buy. Tokyo in general was also very mascot driven, while merchandise for specific series was difficult to seek out, random goods for popular mascots were prevalent. For example, Sumikkogurashi and Sanrio characters could be found in at least a few gacha machines in every clump, as well as scattered through stores randomly.
