Sasuke doesn't ever believe a word coming out of their mouth. When it boiled down to it, nobody actually mean it when they said they'd do anything for him. They meant that they'd love him, that they'd love him until they were in the dirt.

And when he confessed that he couldn't love them back they'd leave. They'd leave so fast he could barely get out an explanation. He could meet them in the middle, he swears it, but they never bother sticking around long enough to hear it.

They just... leave, like everyone else has.

He's surrounded by so many who feel that secret little emotion called love and he doesn't. And he's alone in a crowd, and alone in a stuffed bus, and alone at the dinner table with his family. He's just alone.

He's decided to stop telling people, stop admitting that he's such a fucking freak. Such a monster. A horrid beast that will never be able to love and never be able to be normal even if he inhabits human flesh.

Naruto decides to say those words again, they sting like acid and make Sasuke want to crawl out of his own skin. Three magic words followed up by the four words that seem to curse his existence.

"You love me?" Sasuke asked.

"I do," Naruto answered with, and always he was grinning. He never stops grinning.

Sasuke tries not to grit his teeth, "Why on earth why would you go and do that?"

"Because you're beautiful," Naruto said, there's fondness on his voice. Why is there fondness on his voice? Why does he love him? Why is he so easy going and calm and so fucking satisfied with this interaction.

"That's not the entirety of it, don't lie to me," Sasuke spat. Don't be too venomous. Don't be to sharp. He'll leave before you even spill that you could never love him back.

"I don't know exactly why." He reaches for Sasuke's hands, unfurling fingers to hold them, "But, I do know that I would do anything for you, and I think those are good grounds to confess."

"Anything," Sasuke echoed back.

"I promise," Naruto said, voice firm as he spoke.

"Would you even love me if I couldn't love you back? Would you meet me in the middle?" Sasuke asked, voice weakening to the verge of a crack as he spoke. Don't. Don't fucking crack or shatter or crumble. Just go running back to Kakashi for emotional support after this goes wrong because at least he gets it.

Naruto laughed a bit, "Well, duh, of course I would!"

"Oh."

"But, let's still be friends if you say no."

"No, I want to do this with you."

And Naruto's still grinning this same stupid grin as he says yay and drags Sasuke into a hug. It's suffocating with how deprived he is of intimacy, but, he likes it and hugs back.

Maybe he'll believe it this time.

sakura haruno as an aromantic lesbian is one of my favourite headcanons ever, because like. it makes sense. the way she handles the topic of love seems very much like a teen girl's understanding of what they're supposed to feel. sasuke is cool and mysterious, teen girls are supposed to be into that, so she decides that sasuke is her crush. probably because she heard other girls talking about him, and wanted to fit in.

then, slowly, sasuke becomes, in her mind, proof of her own femininity; as long as she's "in love" with sasuke, no one can accuse her of being different. being the weird girl who doesn't like any guy is one of her worst fears. so she forces herself to become more and more obsessed with sasuke, in order to fit in. sasuke is less of a crush to her, and more of an ideal: as long as she doesn't actually have to date him, she can obsess over him and convince herself she's a normal straight girl.

but then she becomes teammates with him, and becomes actual friends with him. she's definitely platonically attracted to him, which she misinterprets as the romantic feelings she's been pretending to have for years now. she just wants to be his friend, but since he's a conventionally attractive guy, that must be romantic, right?

her rivalry with ino definitely plays into this. one of her best friends, whom she's definitely attracted to in more than a platonic way, is romantically attracted to sasuke. maybe she doesn't realize it, or maybe she does, and thinks that developing feelings for sasuke would be a good way to get closer to ino. who knows. but instead that gives birth to a rivalry between the two of them, which sakura can't protest to; after all, this is what's supposed to happen, right? you like a guy, which means everyone else who also likes him is your rival. that's how love is portrayed in media. jealousy is, in her mind, just another way for her to prove she's "just like everyone else". and when she sees ino flirting with sasuke, she feels jealousy. but not for ino. for sasuke. she wishes ino was flirting with her instead- but she still feels jealousy, so it must be for sasuke, because that's the "normal", heterosexual explanation for the feelings she's experiencing when the two interact.

then, there's her dynamics with rock lee and naruto. rock lee expresses overt romantic interest in her immediately, but since he's unpopular, expressing interest in him would definitely cost sakura her status as a "normal" girl. now, she already feels repulsed by romance, so it's very easy for her to act repulsed by rock lee in general. but when her rejections of his advances are actually accepted by him and he backs off, she wants to be his friend. she gets him flowers and talks to him.

naruto is a bit more subtle about his attraction to her, but still very obvious about it. again, he's unpopular. sakura wants to be seen as normal so badly that she'll reject any advances made by "unpopular" boys and accept any made by "popular" boys; not because she's actually attracted to them, but because it gains her social leverage.

and then we see her using naruto's feelings for her to her advantage in that one scene in shippuden, which is by far one of the most interesting sakura scenes to me, because it shows a very genuine distortion of her view of romance. that it's a tool that can be used, instead of an emotion that is experienced. she's never actually experienced it herself, which is why she's so quick to pretend to experience it to her advantage; that's what she's done all her life.

It hurts every single time they say it.

And in spite of how much it makes him hurt when he hears words he knows he can never say back the same way, he wants them to say it. To confirm he's still worthwhile, that someone out there could want him even though he can't want back in the same way. He wants them to say those three magic words and know that they mean it and feel the burn of disgust course through him even though he needs them.

He bites his tongue when they say it, to refrain from saying 'I don't' when in fact he does in ways he doesn't quite understand himself. He understands that Sakura needs to go be with girls sometimes and that Naruto is content where he is now. He understands that he revels in the way his thigh fits between Sakura's and the way Naruto's fangs sink into his skin.

But he does not understand how he yearns aside from the fact it's different and detached in a way that makes him feel like a predator. Like a monster. Like he's broken. Like he needs to be put aside so he won't hurt anyone this way ever again. They let him hurt them. They know he can't ever be with them the way that they're with each other, and they know they're pouring all of their love into a black hole- but they do it anyways.

Sakura says 'I love you' and it makes his skin crawl as he nods in response because he can't say it back. He squeezes her hand a little bit tighter as if to say 'I'm sorry' without verbalizing it. She just smiles in response to that as he lets the discomfort simmer down into a veritable pleasure at the thought of being wanted.

Naruto says 'I love you' and it nearly makes him gag as he tries to choke out a weak 'okay' when nothing else will suffice. He let's his lover kiss him once on the cheek after that and he hums softly and whispers 'sorry' under his breath. Naruto grins, a softer one than normal, but he lets Sasuke process those three words as long as he needs.

"This isn't working," Sasuke would say in the mornings when they ate breakfast and sipped on glasses of water and tea. He's stopped saying it so frequently, but he still wakes up and feels utterly monstrous as he cannot return the feeling somedays.

"What do ya mean, Sasuke?" Naruto would ask in response as he glanced up from his plate of food. He never understood it when Sasuke said that, he still doesn't because this situation he has is everything he's ever wanted.

"I'm not." Then he'd pause with a stiff exhale, "I don't love you guys the way you love me."

"And?" Sakura asked back sharply. Almost aggressively. They knew their situation, they knew the ins and outs of Sasuke Uchiha better than anyone else. And much to his chagrin, they both wanted him to stay and do so much more than stay.

Sasuke always went silent when Sakura said that one word. It was a challenge. 'Prove to us why we shouldn't love you, Sasuke' is what she was really saying. And Sasuke could never come up with a better reason than 'because I can't' and that was never enough to turn them away from him. He hurts them when he doesn't say it back, and they hurt him when they say it to his face; it's a mutual thing that he isn't ready to give up even if he tries to shrug it off.

It hurts the most when they say it in bed. When they're fucking him, letting him be wanted in the only way he knows how and then they drop those three words and he hisses in pain. He's a masochist but he can't take anything in the realm of emotion. They say it between kisses and tight grasps and he knows they say it out of habit but it still hurts and cuts into him because he can't say it back.

Well, he can say it back, but they'd know that something was wrong. He can say he loves them even when the words taste like acid on his tongue and feel so wrong. He can say that he needs them and they nod along and maybe it makes them feel uncomfortable and that strikes fear deep into Sasuke. Etches terror into his flesh because it's the closest he'll get to loving them and they don't feel it back.

They need each other and he third wheels along. He lives in their house, eats their food, sleeps in their bed, wears their clothing, and propels them both further forward into strength and excellence. He needs them but he doesn't love them. And they love him but they don't need him. He tells himself that at the least. They never say they need him because they're sure they make it clear enough without saying it.

Sasuke leaves when they say it in bed after it happens one time too many. He pushes away Sakura and leaves Naruto and runs a shower as they wait patiently to find out what went wrong. Where they misstepped. How they can make it better. How to make sure that Sasuke won't leave them because he's the third piece of the puzzle and everything feels wrong without him even if he doesn't realize it. They bicker and try to pinpoint how they messed up as the water runs, any semblance of arousal dying in an instant the second Sasuke leaves.

He's the spark. They're the kindling. He's the fire. And they revel in the way he burns through them without so much as a second thought. He's the ashes that smolder and die down without full attention and they stoke the flames and keep him properly maintained because he'd fall apart without them. And even though he can't give what he takes, they'd fall apart without him.

Flowers and chocolates lay on his desk on valentines day and he chokes down bile as they smile. They want him. They still want him no matter how hard he tries to explain to them that he doesn't fit, they still want him. He reads the card as he eats the cherry flavored chocolates and they used words he uses. They wrote in a way that he could understand, that he could get, in a way that doesn't make him feel terrible. Sure, it's stilted and rushed and imperfect, but it's done in a way that makes Sasuke feel… human.

He knows he doesn't fit in with them, but he also can't help the slight ache in his bones at the fact that they love him so much they wrote an entire card without any of the phrases that make him feel ill. He'd frame it if he didn't have to save face, instead he heads out to the shops and marches through streets lined with red hearts and all sorts of flowery stuff that he hates. But he persists because he's doing it for them and everything that they've done to make sure he felt needed despite feeling broken.

'I'll meet you in the middle,' is what he's trying to say as he gives Sakura and Naruto their valentines gifts, 'I don't feel right doing it, but I'll do it for you.' And he tries to say it because that's what they tried to say when they shoddily wrote that letter with the box of off-brand chocolates. The way their eyes light up with the faintest twinge of worry makes the disgust at his own actions worth it.

Naruto and Sakura say 'I love you' less and less as the months blur into a year and then another in their odd semblance of a relationship, one that doesn't always work and always seems to be improper; but none of them can drop it. They stopped using those words near entirely, only uttering them between each other when they thought Sasuke couldn't hear. It hurt him. They still didn't understand that he wanted this type of hurt, this delicious agony, the type of ache that only comes from being desired.

He lets the days turn to weeks, peppered with kisses and attention and some form of sweet words that he can tolerate. It's all too dull and numb now. Nothing quite hits him just right with how much they try to accommodate him, try to make him feel welcome even though they're far past the point of introductions. He holds onto them and doesn't say the three words he fears they want him to say, he just holds them close. 'Bite me, scratch me, hit me, hurt me.' He can never really vocalize it when he knows they'll misunderstand what he wants.

He watches as weeks turn to months and he feels wrong once again in their dynamics, he feels othered even though he hopes they still want him. They've stopped saying it entirely at this point, out of fear or regret due to past mistakes is something Sasuke can't tell. He just knows that something is deeply wrong and he is at fault over the injustice. He still holds them as they sleep, staring at the ceiling with Naruto on his chest and Sakura curled under an arm as he contemplates what went wrong.

"When did you stop wanting me?" Sasuke asked one morning, not too long before lunch so they'd be fully lucid. He swears his voice cracks, a deep-seated fear of something that he can't identify making his heart race and his palms clammy. He realizes at a later date it's rejection that he was fearing so instinctually.

Both of them are quick to be at his side, flooding him with a hundred questions and he ignores all of them. He just gathers a semblance of concepts as his eyes start to water. Hands are on him, his face, his arms, his neck, his shoulders, his own hands- it keeps him real.

"You stopped saying that you love me," he manages, barely stopping himself from breaking into tears.

"It hurts you," Sakura said quietly, caressing his cheek gently with her thumb.

Naruto nods in response, "We don't, we don't want to hurt you."

Sasuke knew that, but he didn't know why they thought he was too daft to realize it. He nudges aside Sakura's hand and holds one of each, trying to put it into words. It was too complex to get it all out in one go, so many layers of their lives linked together to create what they have now. But he tries, "I trust you enough to let you hurt me," and he can only hope that it suffices.

Sakura sighs, "I love you, Sasuke." And the words feel so right even as Sasuke visibly flinches at them due to lack of exposure in far too long. The words reduce down to something registered as 'want' after a brief moment of processing. "You're stubborn as a mule." It's an insult he takes as a compliment.

"Love you too, you idiot," Naruto tacks on even though he's the idiot. He let's Sasuke bite down whatever dumb retort is surfacing and let's him squeeze their hands a little tighter instead.

And Sasuke doesn't need to say it back. They know he wants them.

Sasuke holds their hands when they're in public, not everyday, but sometimes he does. He let's them have their ideals until they get home and they can joke over a bowl of ramen. They drag him along to every store they can because they're not that old yet and can still have some fun on a date. Another phrase Sasuke has learned he hates over the years of being with them.

It was once that they went on dates and he stayed at home, waiting for their return, or he would go pick them up when they were drunk. He'd help them home as they slur their words and stumble and say the phrases he hated the most till his knees went weak. But he went on and got them home and safe and they still said it as they settled into sleep, and only in those rare moments would he ever try to say it back.

But despite their impaired state, one of them would always reach out and shush him.

'It's fine,' Sakura would slur with a finger pressed to Sasuke's lips, her hands were colder than his.

'We know,' Naruto would slur with a hand somewhere on Sasuke, his fingers burned like fire on his skin.

And now when they go out they bring him even though he feels out of place. It makes them look like friends instead of something else far more complex than that, he still didn't know if it was the same strain of attraction. He'd grown into not caring about it either as they eat at high end restaurants, and go through shops, and watch the sunset. He had Sakura and Naruto, and they had him; it was far more perplexing than that, but he only needed to know that much to be satisfied.

He chokes sometimes, words fail to come to the front of his mind when they give him romance out of reflex. He goes stiff and uncomfortable and wants to leave and then he manages a simple 'no' and they all get a small laugh out of it. He's gotten better at not doing that in the same way they've gotten better and only waxing poetic to each other and not Sasuke. He hums along as he watches his partners be the perfect couple on date night, he eats silently as they pass their own kind of want back and forth. It's a comfortable practice that only makes him mildly uneasy after a decade has passed.

Even with Naruto being Hokage and Sakura being chief of the medical shinobi and Sasuke being part of the Akatsuki- they're still stuck to each other with duct tape and undying loyalty. It's become less of a formality, they all live their own lives, Naruto married Hinata, Sakura married Ino, and Sasuke got two pet cats. But their legal partners get it, they hear their spouses and have their own version of it with their old team and let Sakura and Naruto have Sasuke. On the side or front or centre nobody really can tell in their extended and overlapping relationships these days. It's all blended and clung onto each other like velcro, sometimes their spouses kiss and sometimes and they don't- Sakura and Naruto are already familiar with the complexities of relationships considering how long Sasuke's been a part of them.

Family dinners are big, nine people minimum attend and when parents ask they answer with simple words. 'Ino is my wife,' 'Me and Tamari have been a couple for years,' 'I'm Naruto's wife,' 'Gaara couldn't make it tonight,' and many other simpler terms would crop up while Sasuke was left in the dust to lean on Naruto. They both had no parents to ask those questions. So they'd sneak out back when no one was looking and sometimes they'd smoke and sometimes they wouldn't.

The buzz of conversation would sit behind them as they stood in a comfortable summer breeze, even when Sakura would come out to join them. It was a nice silence, one that none of them ever really got a chance to experience with their lives so busy. Three words would be murmured as a cooling breeze rolled with the clouds, usually followed by a kiss on the cheek or grasping for his hand. And Sasuke would hum in response and he would say 'I know' and return the gesture.

Even with Sakura towering over him in the dead of night, moonlight glinting across the room and lighting them up in a pale glow. Her hands resting at his waist and knees bracketing his thighs as he whimpers. She gave a demure smirk and spoke, "I love you," words carried on the near silence and light as a feather as they reached Sasuke.

Even with Naruto at his side as the clock strikes midnight, alight with the silver sheen of the moon skipping across bright blue eyes. His teeth grazing upon the nape of his neck and hands skimming across his abdomen. He grinned and spoke, "I love you," there's always the underlying snarl of the fox that makes Sasuke shudder.

It hurts every single time they say it.

But Sasuke still wants them to say to those three words until he feels terminally ill.

If I have to pick, I would have to pick Yuno for the specific reason of dating Sasuke? Not a good thing cause that man is the most AroAce person alive. That man can not date someone without looking bored out of his mind. He is so AroAce, the flag itself would not be as AroAce as him. Yuno is also AroAce, but compared to Sasuke? He is the most datable person alive.
