Whether you feel he’s asexual, aromatic, or aroace (both), it’s valid. Having this kind of representation is so rare, and I hold it very close to my heart . He’s one of the few representations in this community, in all of media, so if I get emotional about it and sound like I hate Riverdale Jughead for being straight, it’s just because aroace Jughead means so much to me. I try my best just to show my appreciation for comic Jughead instead. 🫶

listen. I have never watched Riverdale and never will. but that doesn’t mean I’m not sO FUCKING PISSED at the polycule ending.

I’m not mad about the polyamory (I would like to stress this point for anyone who wants to come after me for this post), I’m mad that Jughead Jones, one of, like, the two aroace characters in media people have actually maybe heard of (the other being Yelena Belova) is part of this romantic, sexual relationship.

Still embittered by the fact that, not only did the writers of Riverdale erase Jughead's Asexuality and Aromanticism... They also made him into a sexualized relationship with Betty, and later included them in a four-person-Polycule with Archie and Veronica.

The complete opposite of him being the very few canonical AroAce characters. They couldn't even have at least made him Asexual but Heteroromantic.

Every time I think about it, I feel like angrily breaking something, and I am always a stoic guy that doesn't emote much. This Aspec erasure is one of the few things that angers me, as an Asexual man.

Ace of the Week #3: Jughead Jones

Jughead being asexual isn't just implied like many mainstream figures... it's explicitly stated! The word "asexual" was used in the text!

"You just don't get it cause you're asexual..." "Yeah, well, it's why I can think clearly... I'm not hobbled by these hormonal impulses!"

Another thing that really stands out in this canon-reveal is that it's treated with comedy (which is befitting to the Archie Comics universe and style). He's poking lighthearted fun at the allosexuals - especially Archie.

And while it may not be garlic bread or cake, Jughead's stereotypical love and preference for food (in the shape of a burger) is most definitely present.

"On some primal and fundamental level, all I really want to do is hang out with a giant talking burger. I know that about myself now, and I accept it gladly."

The reason why Jughead's intro graphic labels him as Aro-Spec(trum) Asexual is because Chip Zdarsky states that where he falls on the aromantic spectrum would likely change as he grows into adulthood. Which is perfectly valid. Orientation can be fluid for some people; that's part of the appeal of treating queerness as a spectrum.

Relevant Additional Context: A popular meme amongst and about the asexual community is "who needs sex when you can have cake/garlic bread?" So, it's a rather long-standing joke and stereotype that we love food.

Relevant Definitions for Context:

Aromantic: An orientation where an individual feels little to no romantic attraction towards another particular person.

Demiromantic: A label underneath the umbrella identity of "aromantic" in which a person may feel romantic attraction towards a particular person if a deep emotional bond is established.

Reminder that Cole Sprouse originally pushed for Jughead to be AroAce in Riverdale. We really could’ve had it all. 😭

Just saw someone saying that the main 4 in Riverdale getting in a polycule is the best ending that could have happened and when someone pointed out that Jughead is aroace and romance repulsed they got super butthurt bc "it was not cannon in the original comics" and "it was not canon in the show"

That's what I say, before following any alloallo person in fandom and listening to their opinions the first thing you need to look for is if they are normal about aspecs. Most are not

I can't even count the times when I see a queer person in fandom, usually so up in arms about representation, happily erasing aspec characters' sexuality
