Okok so asslo got his name for a reason. this hierarchy he’s obsessed with isn’t something he’s obsessed with to a T, ok? he’s not like “might makes right” else he’d worship the floor John walks on. He would only dream of being beat up by John again, the fiery passion in his eye stirring a longing Arlo can’t quite understand (mom this is for you <3)

No, instead, Arlo has an issue with John being a dumbass who can’t function. Because, yk, his method was “hide the fact im powerful and everyone will love me again” which worked out so wonderfully for him.

Not to say he can never be smart. I’ve met people who were truly dumbasses who came up with the genius of putting icecream on fruit roll ups before tiktok. But like...he doesn’t think anything he does through, and that’s why Cecile got fucked over. She assumed John acts with reason in his pea brain.

So I understand Arlo’s issue - John has no real goal, my boy is just angry. What he fails to understand that the fact this school is in ruin is 50% his fault (well he realizes it later but he certainly believed it was justified for a while)

Don’t believe me? I’ll explain.

SO seraphina losing her powers? 100% not his fault, and that was going to mess with his beloved system whether he liked it or not.

BUT. The main reason why this problem was exacerbated, and another problem in its own right, is that he chose to mess with the school ““cripple””, knowing ISEN, RUMOR LOVING ISEN, was scared enough to say “Hey! Leave John alone, I can’t predict what will happen.”

So, instead of doing that, taking the hint from Isen’s OBVIOUS fear that it’s more than just John being powerful, it’s also John being unfit for a Royal position, Arlo decides to force him out of hiding.

This, my friends, is the only reason John actually ends up fighting Arlo’s system of affairs. If Arlo did jack diddly squat regarding John, taking Isen’s fear as a hint, then John would be playing cripple and Arlo would still have a semi regulated system. Just with Seraphina needing protection.

I judge John less for what he did and how that, objectively, was bad for everyone because - he found a way to not be an ass, yk? Sure, not mentally healthy, but with Seraphina as his friend, she would’ve found out eventually and she was (and probably still would be) kind enough to get him to get it the fuck together. But even if she weren’t - Arlo made the CONSCIOUS decision to fuck with someone whose powers he DID NOT KNOW for the SOLE purpose of maintaining a HIERARCHY he DOESN’T BELIEVE IN.

Like FUCK. Arlo’s gotta stop being a might makes right guy if John being an ass was going to bother him. Like...bro. If high tiers rule, then why is John’s current behavior in any way ludicrous to him. He should be unquestioningly listening? Compared to John, he’s not strong in the slightest.

And I’d have forgiven all of this ludicrous hypocrisy...if Arlo was the kind of guy who wouldn’t be so violent with a crippled individual. Wanting the cripple to know their place, that’s one thing. Being so cruel to a cripple is another.

He only realized his wrongdoings and felt sorry after John ruined everything for him. If John really wasn’t that strong, Arlo wouldn’t have felt any sense of guilt whatsoever, because he never would have thought about what he did.

John only became someone worth caring abt when he was strong. And it’s difficult to think of John as objectively worse when Arlo pulled that shit on him.

Disclaimer: I wrote this out way back when I was catching up with UnOrdinary (just never got around to proof-reading it). Iirc Season 1 had just concluded and all the hate Arlo got over the overwhelming majority of its runtime was still fresh in my head. Please bear that in mind when reading.

So. UnOrdinary. There's two people I want to really talk about, or rather, how incredibly toxic the social environment in this world is for everyone involved in it and the two characters that show this most blatantly: Arlo and John.

I never really understood all the hate Arlo got. I'm talking about back when the comments on the Webtoon chapters would consist of 90% "Asslo"-shaming. I feel like that happened because we, the audience, failed to understand what it was like being a royal. And not because Uru-chan didn't hint at it enough or explain it badly or something, no, we simply didn't want to admit that John's view of Arlo was skewed. Badly skewed.

The way this world is set up, you have basically three "types" of people, classified through the ranking system, and based on estimates of where you will end up in the system, kids are educated in very different ways:

High Tiers are taught one thing and one thing only: they're to lead, keep everyone else in check, make sure everyone behaves. Anyone who doesn't is their personal responsibility, fault and and direct consequence of their failure to do their duty. Also that ends always justify the means, no matter what. See Arlo, Remi, Sera before meeting John and rebelling.

Mid Tiers are directly or indirectly taught to feel inferior to High Tiers. To compensate for that, they are also explicitly taught to feel that Low Tiers are second-rate (or rather, third-rate) humans. Worthless. The story doesn't really feature focus characters from this group as of now, which might be why I can't think of a named character in this group off the top of my head. But these are the aggressive side characters that have Low Tiers do their homework, the kind that default to ranking battles whenever they feel questioned or that group that kidnapped Sera when it first got out that she had lost her ability.

Low Tiers grow up being taught they're the dregs of society. No matter what they accomplish in life, they will never measure up to High Tiers or even just Mid Tiers. Take the beating, keep your head low and move on. Keep yourself in the shadows, a life of being ignored is the best you can hope for. High Tiers rule and get whatever they want, by force or right of birth, Mid Tiers take the spoils, you live off the waste.

So when Arlo and John first clashed, it was destined to end badly.

What Arlo saw was a dude systematically rebelling against the order he had worked his fucking ass off on restoring for what he felt was everyone's safety and best interest. Arlo didn't see the institutional racism and bullying this was enabling. Why would he? All he's ever been taught to believe was that this order was the only thing keeping everyone from killing each other, and his experience with his role as King when Rei graduated and everything went off the rails only reinforced that belief. What he saw was a person risking to instigate what basically amounts to a school-internal civil war, and for no reason at all. Of course he'd look into it. Of course he'd try to stop it, by any means necessary. Remember, "the ends justify the means" and it's HIS responsibility to keep the status quo intact, HIS job as the King to keep everyone in their place, HIS fault if something goes wrong.

Meanwhile John was born as and lived a lot of his formative years at school as even less than a Low Tier. He was a cripple. Basically a punching bag ready for anyone to let their frustrations out on. All he saw was people with even the slightest sliver of power forcing their will on those below them. All he saw was authorities not only protecting this system, but enforcing it. All he saw was a a selfish world where everyone would use whatever power they had to get what they want. And then he became King. By this point, all he had ever known was force, so that's what he turned to. He was only in middle school, but his heart was bitter, angry and cold. He turned to what he knew and failed to see behind the curtains. He was (and still is) a child, how could we expect him to? So when he got expelled and forced to attend that "re-education class" he was in a very bad place. He was a kid that had only known hate and violence from the world, an angry kid incapable of seeing beyond his (for very little of his own fault) skewed world view, a lost kid in desperate help of help, guidance, and love; but what he got was even more hate and violence. And this time, it was very specific and targeted hate, violence with a purpose. No wonder the poor kid seems to have two separate personalities, they were literally BEATEN INTO HIM. Make no mistake, what he went through in that "re-education" class is torture, gaslighting and brainwashing. And I don't use these terms lightly. John is obviously showing an extreme trauma response and likely already had some form of PTSD (I am not a licensed professional, I am only going off of what little I read for my own interest) from being put into the position of King with no clue of how to actually fulfill the duties of what those duties even are (no wonder everything went to shit), and that asshole from the authorities used those cracks to completely break the kid.

Tl;dr: Season 1 John and Arlo are amazing antagonistic character foils to each other, John being the Lancer to Arlo's Leader if we're going by the 5-man-band dynamics, and the only reasons Arlo got as much hate as he did is the somewhat unusual choice of making the Lancer the sympathetic POV character and the Webtoon comment system being EXTREMELY polarising and detrimental as FUCK for any actual discussion for the chapter at hand. It's the Twitter of media discussion if we're being honest.

Isen had gotten the bright idea to search him and his friend’s names, just for shits and giggles. After scrolling for a little while, he came across a blog named uno-writing. The blog seemed to mention everyone’s names so he clicked on it. And boy did he find a goldmine.

“Holy shit!” Isen exclaims, disrupting the rare peace that had settled on the group of friends. “There’s 865 posts?! Does this person have no life??” Isen exclaims and curiosity gets the best of John as he moves to look over Isen’s shoulder.

“What the fuck did you find?” John asks, his eyes scanning over the pinned post. “Go to the masterlist.” Isen clicks the link and the others wait for a reaction.

“We’re all on here.” Isen laughs and the others crowd around, looking at the screen.

“Oh hey, Arlo has two.” Remi points out and John looks at the Arlo links.

“Wait why does he have two?” Isen opens the links in a new tab and the group ogle at the mass amount of links.

“WHY ARE THERE SO MANY?!” John exclaims, his eyes wide as he stares at the screen.

“Pre-Arc?” Sera asks and Isen clicks on it.

“Ah, it’s just Asslo.” Remi hums and Arlo rolls his eyes.

“What’s in mine?” John asks and Isen goes to the masterlist.

“Pain.” Sera hums and John huffs, feeling humbled.

“Why are all of mine about me being a simp?” Blyke asks, getting many ‘really?’ looks from his friends.

“Because you are.” Arlo scoffs and Sera looks at him, partially shocked.

“Wow. I didn’t even know you knew what a simp was.”

“Minor characters?” Blyke reads off, changing the subject.

“Why’s my dad on here?” John asks and Isen clicks one of the links labeled “Why he kinda…”. “I’m done.” John starts to walk away from the computer before turning and facing his friends. “Simping for Big Bird here is one thing! But my DAD?! WHAT?!” Remi and Blyke are on the floor dying, Isen’s about to fall off the couch, Arlo’s grabbing the computer from Isen to make sure it’s safe and Sera’s barely holding it together.

arlo is the same too but the difference between them is that while remi takes the candy arlo sweeps them off of his desk because he would only accept gifts on this day from his future wife as a formal declaration of dedication

episode 117

IM SO SORRY THIS IS SO LATE EPISODE 18 SHOULD BE UP SOON

I’m going by order of mention in the episode so it’s easier

So the first scene was Isen and Blyke on their rooftop continuing their conversation (fight?).

-The Blyke/Isen drama. So I talked about this in my last episode review (? what should i call it pls comment idk). Ok so when the episode starts you see Blyke holding Isen roughly by his shirt. At first I was like ‘that’s kinky’ but ignore me. After I got over that, I was shooketh at this blatant show of dominance and confidence from Blyke. Like damnn you are just asserting yourself into this dominant male position, the alpha, the leader. Let’s talk about that first

-Blyke’s dominance/the superhero posse’s hierarchy. Ok i just wanna apologize for using the word dominance so much but that’s the word I mean so just suffer i got nothing for u. Now back to the actual topic. Recently, I have been seeing Blyke as more of a leader or shot-caller of the ‘superhero posse’. He’s been giving Remi a lot of advice and both Remi and Isen seem to naturally follow him, despite Remi doing the actual groundwork. I’m noticing their small group settling into this kind of hierarchy, similar to the king/queen/jack thing happening in the schools. Here’s what I’ve been noticing

Remi

Isen

This is the hierarchy that I’ve been noticing and ik im being repetitive but stick with me. Remi, I’ve noticed, is actually falling under Blyke into a more submissive, but powerful role as second-in-command, similar to her role as queen in school. Remi, who is powerful and is content, even leading the dirty work and the fighting, as the whole superhero thing was her idea, never struck me as the leader type. Sure she’s brave and strong, but she’s never had the brain or analytical mind that seems to be common in most royals. Her actions are purely based on passion and very impulsive. We see this in an earlier episode when Remi is starting to really get invested in the whole Ember business. She is making fliers, warning students, THE WHOLE NINE YARDS HERE people. Arlo has to step in to stop her, reprimanding her causing panic and for her lack of a political (is this the right word?) mind. We can understand that decision making and problem solving doesn’t come naturally for Remi and she struggles with seeing the bigger picture (something i’m talking about in the post about Remi I’m in the middle of writing). This is why I don’t believe that Remi would be a good leader and why she finds herself morphing into that more submissive, enforcing role where her strong suits lie.

Isen. Ok so Isen unfortunately gets put in the lowest position on my little hierarchy ladder. He has so far shown a more passive demeanor, usually fine with listening to orders (though this episode reckons with this a bit). Isen, who has stated that he is not suited to being a royal, doesn’t have a head for leadership and giving commands. He is usually content to sit back and watch a situation play out rather than interfering. Though he is in no way similar to an omega (the lowest placement in the wolf pack; usually very submissive and dutiful). Isen doesn’t like to be kept out of the loop and doesn’t take to being bossed around (being bossed around is different than taking orders by choice). I tend to think of him in a more neutral light when it comes to the hierarchy of the school. And so he is placed at the bottom, not because he is the weakest, but because he has no ambition, no wanting to be at the top.

This leaves Blyke. My sideline leader who takes charge when the situation calls for it. Blyke already plays a significant role in Wellston’s hierarchy as the jack. I don’t think people give him enough credit for this, you need to understand that him being jack meant that he had beaten out every other guy at the school who wanted the position. Because people who are content living the normal student life, like Isen, aren’t shown to be very many, we can only assume that Blyke is more powerful than any guy at Wellston, other than Arlo, obviously. He could very well be the second most powerful male at his very prestigious school. That’s impressive people. And he was recommended by Seraphina, the school’s ace, for the position, which automatically proves her trust in him. Anyways, back to the topic. I have placed Blyke at the top of my hierarchy ladder. I believe that he is well suited for the life of a leader, similar to Arlo. He is resourceful, good under pressure, and can make decisions. Also strong. All great qualities to have. Similar to Arlo I would say. This is why I believe that beyond the ‘superhero posse,’ Blyke would make a great king. And he probably knows it too. Blyke is very ambitious I’d like to say. We’ve seen lots of evidence of Blyke dissatisfied with his position or unhappy with the way Arlo orders him around. In the first turf battle shown, Blyke is in a fight with Rein, the powerful queen from Agwin, who is beating him. It is obvious that Blyke’s talents aren’t suited to fight her and he is quickly made into the underdog, with very little chance of winning the fight. Everyone on the Wellston team that day notices, though Arlo does nothing, letting Blyke get more wounded as the fight progresses. Sera eventually has to step in, resigning to the fact that Arlo was never going to. I would assume that Blyke is indignant at this treatment and feels an amount of injustice. No doubt he hates Arlo in that moment, loses his respect for him as king. Any sane person would lose some respect for the guy. After all he is Asslo. After numerous incidents like these, we can guess Blyke may finally snap and try to dethrone Arlo, though he knows that he isn’t strong enough, which is currently preventing him from rising any farther on the ladder that is UnOrdinary hierarchy. Sorry this got a little off topic and a little out of hand, but I would just like to say that I believe, if given the chance, Blyke would rise above his position as jack into a position better suited for him. Into the position of king. The inner king of Blyke has given him a role of leadership in the superhero posse and, though he has been rather forceful about his commands, he seems to be a natural.

-Blyke vs. Isen. The beginning scene features a face-off between these two friends. I’ve talked about this in episode 116’s review (still don’t know what to call this) and decided to elaborate with the new developments of chapter 117. Ok so Blyke has been acting all dominant with Isen and bossing him around. I don’t know if their friendship is usually like this or if the situation is bringing out the bossy in Blyke, but he becomes really strict. Isen, like any sane person, is panicking about the situation, which is really pissing Blyke off. He tries to get Isen to do something, to go save Remi, but gets no response. He then decides to save her himself (which is honestly hat he should have done from the beginning) and leaves Isen. We also see Isen getting angrier too. I’m really intrigued by this because this could be the beginning to a frenemy sort of relationship between the two or their friendship could disintegrate completely. I’m interested in the idea of Isen and Blyke as enemies or avoiding each other. It would be so different from what we normally see from the characters and we, the readers, would get to see different sides of both guys. This is not gonna really be elaborated on but that’s because I talked about it in previous reviews.

I don’t think John’s actions are excusable

I do think he needs to be he needs to be held accountable for them

I get that Elaine and Arlo and everyone else were dicks to him, but he retaliated over something unrelated. This was not an act of vengeance or anything related, it was literally John being an ass. And if Arlo is Asslo because he was a dick in the turf wars and went to far, John should also be accountable for going to far, as he did this past chapter AND (shall I remind you all) when he literally almost killed two of his classmates.

Don’t excuse his actions. Don’t make excuses for him. The most important point in John’s arc is going to be him taking responsibility, not him excusing his shitty behavior.

No cuz i headcanon that despite not rlly liking kids cuz they are noisy, dirty and annoying, arlo is surprisingly good with them. Not in a “cool fun babysitter” that lets you eat icecream for dinner kind of way but in a genuinely motherly “you are not leaving this table until you eat your broccoli” kind of way. Like, there is a crying baby and arlo is the only person in the whole group who knows how to hold it correctly and calm him down until it falls asleep. Or you know that one thing mothers did when you were little nd we all absolutely hated it? Where when you have dried food on your face, they’d lick their thumb and try to wipe it off? Yeah i can imagine arlo doing that to remi cuz she is a messy eater and constantly gets food on her face & her being like “eww asslo stop!1”

Absolutely🍿!!! He’s got such mom energy. I think the only other one that would kind of know how to act with kids would be Blyke and that’s only bc I HC him to have a younger sibling. I swear he does the thumb lick thing with Holden bc Holden always has dirt or something on him. Out of habit he accidentally tries to do it with John and John’s just like WTF???????!!!!!!!
