For AU-gust 2024 day 29: Forced into Hiding

My Hero Academy and Ark Survival Evolved/Ascended fusion yaaay. Aberration is releasing next week so that’ll be fun. Wish Mezo Shoji (and Fish the Bulbdog and Zipper the Ravager) luck, he’ll need it.

*sigh* there has been a return of an au I had a year ago, and now I have it changed for this fandom, and now it’s taking over my brain. And god damn it, why does ark survival evolved have to be so tempting to make an au based off of???(original thing the au was for was MHA)

Xisuma was experience when it came to dinos and creatures different than the normal ones. He played with mods half the time for gods sake! What he didn’t expect though, was on a journey through the arks that was supposed to be vanilla, end up with some weird phenomenons.

At first it was glimpses of something out of the corner of his eye. That wasn’t very different, some of the dinosaurs were predators that stalked their prey. But it got more and more unusual from there. Eventually there were messages dug in sand and scraped into rocks and trees. He could’ve sworn it was an unmodded and closed ark.

He must’ve just left a mod on by accident, the silly derp. He started seeing things that didn’t match with any mods he had played with. There was what appeared to be a reaper queen, but it looked like it was half tek. This could’ve been explained as just an update to a mod and shrugged off.

Yet it didn’t feel right, whenever he saw the thing, there was always a glitching effect it seemed. Eventually he was just down in a cave, looking for loot when he turned and was face to face with it.

It wasn’t quite the same as a reaper queen, it was smaller, for one, and it had very short green fur where the bionic parts weren’t. It had moved silently, enough to be worrying.

Xisuma was too close to be able to run, nor did he have a shield on him. His tools weren’t the best quality, only low damage and durability journeyman and mastercraft. He was prepared to feel the quick pain of a dino-inflicted death and have to come back for his gear, but it never came.

The thing just… stared at him.

Eventually he learned that the thing wasn’t actually a thing, it was a he, and his name was Doc. Doc was, well, a glitched player. He had been experimented on by Rockwell, and, well, this had happened. He was turned into this.

It was a simple fix, once Xisuma realized which part of the code was wrong. Even after Xisuma did all he could to fix the code, Doc would still have some different features, but that didn’t matter to either of them. Doc was happy to finally not be stuck as that form, and Xisuma liked the company. They totally weren’t falling for each other, totally.

And well, if Xisuma ended up telling some friends on a server about Doc, and them all telling him to invite Doc, and they shared a kiss and maybe more during a party while drunk ;), then that was their business and the others sure as fuck weren’t questioning the two. Even if Ex wasn’t too sure about his brother liking someone who still had a bit of non-normal code to them.

-I am writing this while sick and completely exhausted and with a headache, and I just watched a ton of ark videos, so I have ark on the mind and this au from the past came back and it infected my brain with its addictingness.

Xisuma considered himself to be pretty non-standard code as well, and he considers Ex to be a hypocrite.

Doc's been through a lot, and Xisuma is proud to call him part of his family. And, maybe, his boyfriend but he doesn't want to presume, you know?

Doc doesn't know how X deals with so many dinosaurs but manages to be this much of a derp.

Digimon Tamers - Volume 4

The beginning of this volume flat out spoils things by putting characters that haven't been introduced yet on the character page. (MarineAngemon, the Juri clone, the D-Reaper queen...) Maybe that's a common practice with shounen manga...but it shouldn't be. Like, what's the point?

Ch. 22

Lopmon and Terriermon interacting will never get old. Love how they lift their ears with curiosity when they first see each other.

I think I prefer experiencing the ~sad~ part of Tamers better in manga form. I remember it being quite drawn out in the anime and I rather just blitz through it at this point. I think the whole Leomon death storyline just annoys me because they barely developed his character and then the writing expects me to be devastated. Juri was more developed, sure, but we barely got any insight into her relationship with Leomon so her deep, dark depression doesn't feel super warranted either.

Ch. 23

I think this chapter was pretty well done. They're giving an epic battle it's time instead of zooming past it.

It bugs me that there isn't a specific name for digimon/human digivolutions. In this translation they called it a "true mega form." On the wiki it's called both an ultimate and a matrix digivolution. IDK why it doesn't count as a jogress. I guess there's like...two different things: the way you digivolve (matrix) and the digivolution level (ultimate)? If it's confusing for me, I can only imagine it'd be confusing for a kid.

It's a bit weird for an English translation, but I like that Guilmon says "MMA!" a lot. I can totally hear him making that noise with his OG voice. Creative onomatopoeia.

Ch. 24

Grrr Jian said "crumbcakes," so done with this stupid translation

This chapter was hella short, not much to say about it.

Ch. 25

Okay, now they're calling it a "biomerge digivolution." I guess the localizers also thought "this needs a cool name!"

Casual 90s/early 2000s sexism sprinkled throughout this translation. Takato says he "screams like a little girl" in a previous chapter and in this one he says "easy to forget Renamon and Rika are girls when they're always kicking butt!" Eye roll...

SaintGalgomon looked super badass but for some reason when Sakuyamon appeared they chose to dedicate two closeup panels to her chest and high heels? Sus...

Ch. 26

Juri's face didn't look as sinister here as it did in the anime (when it's revealed she's possessed). I guess that's probably a good thing. More subtle.

I don't remember the sovereign digimon giving Culumon a "you're a real boy now" speech in the anime. That was sweet.

They cut the part where Beelzebumon gets zapped by a bunch a digimon. In this he just collapses after the battle with Dukemon, which I think I prefer. (But why'd he say he'd be "bunny chow?" He wasn't even fighting Terriermon...)

Ch. 27

The grotesque, over-the-top facial expressions the artist keeps drawing for Hirokazu piss me off. They're just so ugly.

Ugh...they really had to ruin a serious moment (Guilmon getting the ark to stop) with a poop joke. This manhua does NOT treat its audience with respect.

Hmm they completely cut out Juri's family. So much for developing her character I guess.

They kind of forgot to imply that the ark is sentient. I mean they showed it stopping on its own, but in the anime they really hammered it home by having Guilmon have a conversation with it and showing it's HAL-like eye. That was one of my fave parts so I'm sad lol

Ch. 28

Okay, this is starting to feel totally different from the anime, they skipped like 5 episodes worth of content. Also, IDK if the scanlation I'm reading is missing some pages because the ending with Dukemon being beat up was completely nonsensical (it cut from Beelzebumon being hit to a panel with Dukemon outta nowhere?) I'll give it the benefit of the doubt that there are missing pages...

The scene where Beelzebumon uses Leomon's attack to save Juri played out differently here. She doesn't seem particularly perturbed by it and Beelzebumon can't save her because he gets attacked, not because Juri recoils for too long.

Ch. 29/30

Lol they completely cut out Justimon. Makes Ryo's role even more pointless! Ryo doesn't even reappear at all...

This manhua series was crap to begin with but they really screwed the pooch with this ending. SOOO rushed. Grani appeared outta nowhere with zero introduction. Like they just went immediately to Grani's sacrifice. I still don't know if I'm missing pages or if the writing is just that garbage. Oh well! I tried.

The Scents Of Kuroshitsuji: Phantomhive Manor

@briccy started asking me about the scents of characters. Now here we are. I'm gonna see if I make a series out of this so we're starting with the Phantomhive Manor and next will probably be the reapers. If there are any specific people or groups you'd like to see, send an ask and I'll fit it in somewhere! Enjoy!!

Ciel Phantom:

The Earl of Phantomhive doesn't have a distinct smell as it changes with the environment and the mission he's on. For example, if the Queen hasn't given him a task and he's just working on Funtom stuff or is just generally in the manor or town house, he smells like paper, ink, and books. However, given he needs to be in places like the circus grounds in the Noah's Arc ark, he smells of dirt and sweat. Alternatively, if his mission requires him to mingle amongst the rich, he smells clean, like soap. Sebastian might also put a sweet smelling perfume on Ciel if he needs to up the whole "child Earl" thing.

Sebastian Michaelis:

Sebastian, like Ciel, has a main scent which morphs depending on the environment he's spending the most time in. When he's in the manor, though, I like to think he has the continuous scent of sweets or baked goods (especially chocolate) on him because he makes the stuff for Ciel. However, he does always have a faint undertone of a dangerous scent to him. It isn't blood, and it isn't death. But it does radiate danger. This is amplified when he's going demon mode or it's night time, specifically between the hours of 11:30 PM to about 4 AM and most intense between 12:30 AM and 1:00 AM. His dangerous scent is like that of a predator, waiting to capture it's next soul.

Mey-Rin:

Mey-Rin is curious because, while she does have a nice sized collection of perfumes (mostly from Ann when she was alive and Nina Hopkins), she doesn't use them as often as one might think. She only uses it during special occasions, such as an important big event (like the show in mbditw), or if she feels she's loosing touch with her femininity again. This is especially true after nights where she has to revert to assassin mode such as in Book of Circus. Otherwise, she just smells like general cleaning supplies such, mostly laundry detergent.

Baldroy:

Bard smells like smoke. Cigarette smoke, usually, but sometimes firearm smoke as well from guns, bombs, etc. But it isn't in a bad way. Because of his soldier background, it fits him. It fits his look, his accent (in my head, not the anime idk what they did in the anime), his vibe. It's almost comforting and protective in a sense. He was a dad and now protects and looks after the manor as is his job but also after Mey Rin and Finny because those are his best friend and almost child respectively. He knows they can protect themselves, but he also wants to protect them as best he can and the smokey scent surrounding him brings comfort vibes, especially to them. Not to Sebastian, though, who gets the startings of a headache when he smells smoke for too long, even if Bard isn't around.

Finnian:

Finny smells like outside. Dirt, trees, grass, certain flowers depending on the season. Point is, he smells like the essence of nature. He loves spending time outside because of his past, and, if left alone long enough, he would spend all day just messing around outside. He always has dirt under his nails and, on working days, specks of it around his face.

Tanaka:

Tanaka has different scents depending on who you ask. To Sebastian, it's an old soul who's very respectable (he doesn't taste like a normal human, I doubt he smells like one either so yes, he can smell souls). To the trio, it's the tea he drinks as well as a soft bookish scent. Like an old book in a library. To Ciel, though, it's comfort. He smells like home. Tanaka is the longest companion he's held, and he's most relaxed around him.

Snake:

Snake doesn't have a smell. Snakes don't smell like anything, and neither does he. The only time when he does have some sort of scent is if someone like rubs dirt on him or uses perfume or cologne or something like that. And even then, it doesn't last long and you'd have to continuously keep putting it every like 30 minutes to an hour if you want it to stick. Sometimes, though, this comes in handy for when he needs to sneak around.

The Phantomhive Manor:

The last is the manor itself. To outsiders, it smells like house. A fancy house full of expensive things. To those in the know, it smells like blood. To those who live there, it smells like home. To Ciel, it smells like the past. Even though it's an entirely different structure, he can still faintly smell his mother's perfume in the library, the scent of his father's favorite ink in the study, the scent of his aunt who would do house calls for his asthma in where his childhood bedroom was. It's home, but it's also so bittersweet for someone who lost his family so quickly. Special inclusion: to Undertaker, it smells like regret.

Ashley : You know, were on a tight schedule that we should find this 13-year old girl named Maka Albarn. It's our job and we have a part to do it.

"Ashley : Elite Member of the Majo Detective Force"

Kimial Diehl : Yeah, I get that. She was that girl who blew up Japan's population from an explosive energy of Shattered resonance, but apparently Soul Resonance was invented by Shinra Kusakabe himself.

Ashley : Shinra Kusakabe, that name of a devilish hero, ever he since died by the hands of the Time Eater it's because he was scolded for creating Death and the world of Soul Eater itself. That's what your part of. You were the part of story you were enrolled at the school run by his man-made son.

Kimial Diehl : So, let's get started. Let's look for clues around this city. I bet it's crawling with a full house fans anywhere.

Ashley : Right. So, let's keep searching.

Kimial Diehl : Well, you're guess is good as mine. So what did you find?

Ashley : Well, we did talk to people and searched for clues, are you sure about that?

Kimial Diehl: No, but why tho? It's because of I have one solution if I'm looking for Maka Albarn. I wonder if she came to this school?

Ashley : No she did not, or did she? Come, if there's any people that knows about Maka Albarn.

Maka's Teacher : You knew about Maka Albarn.

Ashley : You must be her teacher.

Maka's Teacher : Well, yes it's true. She did come to this school when she finished grade school as a child, but in her days of becoming a pre-teen, she spent most of her time in the city she was full of ideas to come along. But after enrolled to Middle School before passing on to 7th and 8th grades, something went horribly wrong.

Ashley : What went horribly wrong?

Kimial Diehl : Hold the phone, what? Maka was taken away?! How'd that happened?

Vice Principal : Well, it all happened back in 2003, you see when she was out of school to meet a juvenile named Soul Evans or Simon was his real name, was on a date with his first love partner, she wields this Scythe that was somehow a hand-crafted weapon belonging to her "people". Everything was fine in San-Francisco until a demon made of ink appeared and another Maka Albarn that is the queen and proclaimed to be this demon's mother. After the two encountered and met at City hall, Maka Albarn have become the victim of being framed for attacking the public and of course the attacks in Tokyo and then...

Red the Demon (in staff form) : And then what happened? (converts into his real form) I don't know what's right or what's wrong, there's no way Maka would be framed for that, would she?

"Red the Demon : Ashley's trustworthy partner"

Red the Demon : It's true that she did come to middle school when she's not around during sick days. But if she was home schooled, maybe this would consider to be lucky if humiliating someone to bring their ordeals back in business. But when she was about to enter grade 8, then tell me what happened?

Vice Principal : Okay, after confronting the ink Demon known as Inky Jr, this mysterious reaper showed up and had taken her into custody who leads a pack of robots.

Kimial Diehl : Robots? Maka Albarn was taken away by robots...

Vice principal : on her 13th birthday! This incident was secretly taken care of and and everyone in this town will never find out why they taken her away.

Kimial Diehl : I know of those Eggman robots, it happened during the Space Colony ARK incident, when Shadow that he was presumed dead when sacrificing himself to save the world, he was rescued by a group of machine Egg Pawns, a next generation type of badniks were made by the mad scientist and arch nemesis of the world's great gaming mascot of all, Dr.Ivo Robotnik, otherwise known as Dr. Eggman of the Eggman industries.

Ashley : You knew about it? Eggman is responsible for it, he brought those machines to take Maka Albarn away from Soul Evans, her father, friends and teachers too.

Red the Demon : So, it's not about that... it's about something that this Soul World has some sort of connection with Sonic's world. Nintendo had no comment on what really happened to Maka Albarn, but they know. Only a Nintendo veteran making my first ever appearance has done it right. Someone did take Maka Albarn away from her, but where in the world could she be?

Ashley : (sighs) Well, we might be lucky that we get to try this San Francisco food. But still, there might be some lucky people that knows about Maka Albarn. I don't know why she disappeared from this city. I mean, do you know that DWMA Existed and she came to the city again or once in her life?

Kimial Diehl : Not exactly, but I do know about that. Well, I wonder what's becoming of Soul World since the Ohkuboverse was completely destroyed in half? It feels like that if Nevada was my home, I shouldn't belong to Nevada, but the in real world, I found myself that I belong to New England, why would the DWMA would do something to benefit humanity's prosperity and protection.

Ashley : The hatred, Kimial. It's because of these heartless have been wrecking havoc in real world au since that happened before.

Red the Demon : Yeah, it happened around 800 years ago, the humans and witches had been conflicting each other it's because of one kid who spread his influence to make humans and witches hating each other or despising each other. He died about 1000 years before that happened and someone had hid the truth from your people, Ashley. That's how Soul Eater's story began when Maka Albarn in the real world wasn't around.

Ashley : Yeah, I got it all figured. Anyway, she's still out there somewhere.

Seto : Oi, you two. I was wondering that you are those detectives that Grim knew about.

Kimial Diehl : Eh? What or...Who are you?

Seto : I'm Seto...Seto the Deathless, but you can call me "Needles girl" in terms of a Japanese manga.

Kimial Diehl : Really? You don't seem that needless every day, but what do you call yourself a Deathless.

Seto : It's this sword that I carried in the past, I wield this baby for special purposes. In fact, I'm a former mercenary that specializes in money-oriented problem. My were rich people and I'm not that greedy.

Ashley : Where did you come from anyway?

Seto : Let's just say this at once this. (opens up a can of sprite) I originally come from Tokyo, they called me the hero because of my actions and bravery, I used valor and style with my powerful blade, a sword that I wield contains powers of a reaper, I'm the Shinigami that I wanted to be.

"Seto : Member of the Deathless Guild".

Ashley : So, you're a Deathless, and you come from the city of Tokyo, Capita city of Japan, right?

Seto : Yep. (Drinks cola) Well, good luck with that, I did saved a bunch of people from an ex-convict named Solva, the girl that I met at the same we go to. It happened at the Reaper's Castle. I discovered that the one who makes Eolva a mean-looking girl is actually a heartless that attacked the castle three years ago when I stopped Solva that was leading gang of criminals and had master expel her evil out of her heart. After getting parole and decides to work with me, Solva rat out the gang and moved to the castle living with me now. She's in witness protection, pretend it's witness protection caused by me in greatest plans of all! I'd telegraph that myself. (Drinks cola once more)

Ashley : Yeah, that's wonderful. You know, these heartless did appeared two years ago, they had the ability to disguise their as humans or even created from our hearts. You have a heart, Don't you? They say that the Shinigami Council would be happy to join you as the newest member. They elected someone for that matters.

Kimial Diehl : So what's this about anyway?

Seto : It's like this and I really need to say it privately. No minor mistakes, so... Since master has taken the 13-year old to secure the package from that incident that happened in the city, we decided that the kid will be homeschooled by herself to study the hardships of Reaper and magic. So looks like class is in session,

Ashley : You knew Maka Albarn as that much? So do you know where she at?

Seto : Oh yes, I know where she and I hope that you guys would be the ones to feel the urging of meeting her in friendship and that is why the story of three kids weren't meant to be one for each and just got the needs for someone to have cherish the fact.

Kimial Diehl : Why didn't you say so? Of course we'll to find Maka Albarn!

Seto : First let me introduce to the boys that I've known about that aren't the needless girls, in fact, that Maka Albarn kid wanted to meet you in person so that Master Grim would like to have a word with. *Snaps fingers* Get him boys.

Kimial Diehl : Heheh, really, Deathless? Is that the best you can do, Deathless. Calling your so-called friends of yours.

Seto : You still don't get it, do you, witch of New England. You're lucky that Master knew about this and I had my friends to meet you in person?

Ashley : So they're the ones who took Maka Albarn, they have to behind all of this. Alright, who do you think you're-

Egg Pawn : That's correct, Seto. Orders are issued. Returning to Hang Castle immediately.

Scars: Luna has many scars from the military. The reason why you don’t see the scars well the smaller scars is because she uses her makeup to conceal them all That’s why if you touch her in these places she will either flinch as these places are very sensitive. The only scar that she can’t conceal is the one of her left eye.

Personality: her personality is very complicated mainly because she has a switch from different ones to adapt and survive the setting she’s in though her personality is mainly all the mixed together.

Backstory: Their mother Charlotte a reaper had a one night stand with a human that was on the To die List. Of course Charlotte got pregnant and Crimson helped with the pregnancy after Raven‘s father died because what Charlotte Raven did was illegal because they didn’t get the council consent to marry after Raven was born Charlotte wanted to kill Raven to get rid of evidencebut Crimson being part human protested but soon Made a compromise to abandon her at the orphanage.

Why they hate Luna: for being the daughter of Crimson reaper, getting bullied less then her, and strangling her when Raven provoked her to. Because of these reasons she hates her with a burning passion she often fantasize when Luna tortured in the most brutal ways.

How they meet Luna: When they were human they met Luna in the All Saints orphanage with her best friend Amelia Rosewood. They got along When she was human but when Luna was getting blamed for being a demon and killing the children in the all states orphanage, Lillian was the one who spread the rumor as Marry the Caretaker of the orphanage manipulated her to do so. She even manipulated her to take her own life to frame that Luna killed her. Now when she was a reaper she referred herself as her last name now in the orphanage everyone just called each other by their first name as since there is soon to be adopted their last name didn’t matter, they met when Luna was looking around the dorm and showed her around pretending not to know her.

Ranking: now in the underworld Grim Reaper’s have different jobs you could either be in the records department, go full-time and reap the souls, be a member of the council, or be a medical reaper and Raven chose to be a medical reaper.

Personality: confident, steals the spotlight, gets jealous easily, takes out her frustrations on Luna as she is bullied.

This has caused Catherine to become a perfectionist and mature at an early age, so when her little sister was born. She was a more then a bit jealous when her parents over-doted on her letting her to be able to have a childhood of play without work. One day when she was taking her sister to town a they got trapped and lost in the crowd.

How they meet Luna: she met Luna when she was intending a ball that she was hosting and she invited Ciel as she took an interest at him, wanting to maybe talk business with him. Ciel brought Luna with him as he doesn’t want to leave her alone as she’s still recovering from her injuries. She met Luna as she saw her on the side not enjoying the party she had thrown just talking to her sister.

Her father just wants power so she try’s to make her get with Ciel but he couldn’t because of him already having a fiancé but sents Cynthia knows Alois and because she wants to be with him because she loves him. She was very sheltered when she was younger to the point were she thinks that she is the only one with any kind of suffering. And because of that she thinks that she is the only one who had problems.

Why they hate Luna: She dislikes the lower class and Ciel’s servants because she considers them to be not good and lazy because Ciel is more lenient to them compared to Alois who is more strict and gives out punishments if they do something wrong like braking a plate or look at the ones that they serve. Because of how sheltered she is she’s very entitled and thinks the world revolves around her and she thinks that she is the only one with pain so when she sees Luna she’s rather rude to her because even though she doesn’t wear colorful clothing like Luna, Luna is for a bit more boyish then Cynthia.

Backstory: before Samuel and his brother was were separated he and his father did not have a good relationship as he got his father‘s anger issues and his father would often yell at him. That was one of the main reasons why the wife divorced her husband and went back to her home taking Lawrence with her (This was before Lawrence transition) , the reason why his father took Samuel is because he looks more like him with the same hair color and Eye color is the drinking got more severe he often beat him when he was being “reckless” or rude.

I was gonna comment in the replies but I realized I have a few too many words lol. I tend to stick pretty firmly to the 1799 anchor date of Thomas Wallis' death/Grelliam's finishing training school, only because Yana was involved enough in the production of s2 that the date would have likely had to be approved by her. The comment about "weren't you here 70 years ago" strikes me as a possible bit of misdirection (perhaps Grell was just Not Paying Attention, #bimborights, or perhaps she was already finding crimes to commit in the mortal realm), but honestly it could be meant to be taken as canon over the OVA timeline. However, as someone who has been in this fandom since 2009, I can tell you that I tend to take seemingly random things in the anime-only content as VERY strong possibilities for future manga developments. A non-exhaustive list of things that were in the anime months or years before the manga:

-The entire character of Paula, Lizzy's maid

-Queen Victoria being interested in reviving the dead

-The motif of twin servants in white to the queen (ash and angela versus double charles)

-Undertaker being a reaper

-Druitt being the uncle to a blonde boy roughly Ciel's age who Ciel has to investigate

-Drocell and the puppets made of the bones of kidnapped children preceded Joker and Noah's arc circus

None of this is actually to argue with anything you said in your post, because in reality I tend to work off of the same rough timeline assumptions as you for Grell's time as an alive mortal. But I just wanted to throw in some extra food for thought since I think for newer fans it's not super apparent just how weirdly intertwined the anime only content is with later manga developments. For example, when the Noah's Ark storyline started in the manga, everyone was like "DROCELL?!?! DROCELL IS THAT YOU???" In retrospect more of us should have seen the children's bones plot twist coming LOLOL

As to my own thoughts about Grell's life, I often think it was a broken heart. It's not clear in the manga if reapers remember their human lives, so it would be really interesting character-wise if the reason Grell is constantly making off-color remarks about killing herself and finding dying for love as star-crossed soulmates romantic is that it has echoes of her own life, even if she doesn't remember that. And I FIRMLY agree that Grell was probably like 25 when she killed herself.

"Just When Was Grell Sutcliff Alive?" Part 1: Establishing a Timeline

So as many of you know, I recently got into Black Butler (I know, about 17 years too late), and I'm almost caught up. However, I want to talk about how I'm still thinking about Vol 29 and some of the lore dropping Othello does at the beginning there.

Namely I'm fixated on possibly having a timeline for Grell's human life and death.

This wasn't intended to be a proper meta. It's been too long since I've written one, and there's probably important stuff I'm forgetting or don't know. But I wanted to write all of this down to get it out on the page, for posterity. Then it accidentally became a meta. Oops. Mild BB spoilers up to Vol 29, and heads up for some discussion of historical homophobia, transphobia, and state violence at the end. As well as a canon-typical suicide mention. I use she/her pronouns for Grell, but broadly interpret her as queer and transfeminine given the complexity of talking about identity in the time periods I'll be referencing (I use "queer" as a reclaimed, academic, blanket term). I'm also largely taking a Watsonian approach (Grell's experiences from her perspective), although a Doylist approach to Grell (as in relating to the author's intent and cultural context rather than the character's) is also really interesting one, but feels like more well trodden territory. With that out of the way, let's begin.

The info we have So. Something really interesting happened in Vol 29. We got a lot of great Undertaker backstory, but Othello said something relating to Grell that made me eyes emoji.

"Weren't you around 70 years ago?"

So, she never replies to this. But it seems highly plausible this means Grell was not a reaper 70 years before the current date in the manga. We don't quite know what the lag time is between someone dying and becoming a reaper, but I'm taking this to mean she had not died yet, as I assume she would have remembered an event like the one Othello describes. I believe this is the implication. Now, I am making some assumptions:

- To clarify, I know this is all guesswork. I'm just having fun with different possibilities. - Like I said, we don't know what the lag time is between someone dying and becoming a reaper (as in, the new state of being, not the job), and we don't know how long it takes to go from trainee to collections to senior. - That Grell was around 25 when she died. It's hard to tell anime character ages from 20-40 at a glance, but her design seems similar to me to characters that are in their 20s in other series. She could be older or younger, but I'm using that in lieu of a better option. It's not precise, but it'll get us in the ballpark anyway - Black Butler has a lot of anachronisms. However, Toboso is known to research things heavily and her changes are typically very purposeful (the purpose is usually "Rule of cool" and that's why we stan). I'm assuming historical events happening in BB to mirror the real world except where indicated otherwise. - I'm also assuming she's English. The names Grell and Grelle are both German in origin, but there are a lot of Germanic names in English and Sutcliff as a surname originated in Yorkshire. This is only based on a quick Google search--I could do more later, but this seems in line with Grell not being presented as "foreign" to England in any way in the series making her stand out in the same way her flamboyance or flirtation with men does. The series takes place in 1888 and 1889. 70 years ago would put Undertaker's defection at 1818. If what Othello says is true, this means Grell became a reaper sometime after that date.

Let's establish the outlier possibilities first (again, assuming a pretty rapid transition from human death to becoming a reaper).

The earliest possible date Grell could have become a reaper: sometime in the following year, around 1819. This would put her birth at around 1794, and her death that year in 1819. This feels unlikely because it seems like she would have been exposed to people talking about Undertaker defecting since it was such a catastrophe, but who knows.

The latest possible date Grell could have become a reaper is 1887, which would place her birth at around 1862. This is massively improbable to the point of being impossible since she's a senior in collections and I assume that didn't happen in a year, but again, it's important for establishing a range. Basically, tldr, according to this framework, Grell became a reaper sometime between 1819 and 1887, which puts her human life (and death) in that timeframe as well. This would place her in the Georgian-Victorian eras, or possibly even the 8 year Regency period.

Will the Reaper OVA I've only talked about the manga so far since the 1st anime canon is wildly divergent in a number of ways, but if we include the Will the Reaper OVA, this would push things towards the earlier end of that timeline. I don't know much about the history of fashion (especially not middle and lower class dress), but it seems distinctly late 1700s/maybe early 1800s to me. Which if I'm reading right, would actually push Grell becoming a reaper back as far as the 1790s or 1810s, and would dispute the 1819 date implied by Vol 29. IF ANYONE KNOWS MORE ABOUT THE FASHION REFERENCES HERE, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO TELL ME. I WANT TO KNOW.

(Baby....Grell...furious and stark raving mad recently dead stray cat making it everyone's problem. I'm fine) This is subverted a little bit by the reaper outfits appearing more like Victorian businesswear, but Reapers always seem to be a few decades ahead of the world in terms of fashion and technology. My personal assessment is that the fashion in this is to make it immediately, visually clear that the OVA takes place in the Georgian rather than Victorian period, however that forces me to break my largely Watsonian approach for a Doylist one ("the animators perhaps decided it was necessary to show that time had passed since the events of the OVA"), but considering it came out so long before the lore drop in Vol 29, who knows.

I'm not inclined to take it as gospel truth for the manga canon, but considering Toboso did collaborate on that one, I think it at least worth talking about and considering as supplemental information.

I personally take this to support (but not solely uphold) the idea that "Grell became a reaper sometime during the Georgian period (1713-1837)", but again, grain of salt.

What would it mean for Grell to be a queer person in England in the 1700s and 1800s?

As far as I'm aware, we don't know anything about what Grell's life might have been like before becoming a reaper. Unless I'm missing something, that's a black box until Toboso reveals more.

But establishing this timeline gives us a great opportunity to consider the circumstances she would have lived under.

Understand that I'm not speaking in absolutes here, more "here are some interesting things I like to think about when considering why this character might be the way she is". I'm also not saying Toboso intended any of this to be read into Grell, but as readers I believe it's reasonable to assume Grell may have encountered these events or they might have impacted her unless stated otherwise. A brief list of things Grell would have been living under or around or could have been aware of. I want to do a part 2 talking about how these things might relate to someone like Grell, as well as talking about other major historical events not directly related to queer people (like, you know, the Napoleonic Wars), but this post is already feeling long enough: - The Buggery Act and the Offenses Against the Person Act, which made a variety of sexual acts punishable by death, including acts like anal sex. These laws were used to persecute people, usually queer men (although people who would today be called trans women and nonbinary people were also certainly prosecuted as well*), particularly in the 1700s and 1800s. I believe as of 1862 it was no longer punishable by death, but people still lived in fear of prison and hard labor (Oscar Wilde going to prison in 1895 being a famous later example). Here's an article about the men killed under the Buggery Act. *Trans men were not exempt from this, even if the specific legal and social threat was likely different. If memory serves, Dr. James Barry was jeopardized by rumors that he may have been Too Close to one of his cis male friends. - Molly houses. Generally considered places in the 1700s and 1800s where queer men gathered to socialize and find sexual partners. There was a lot of gender divergence in these spaces, and it's widely believed they were frequented by people who, again, today, could have a variety of gender identities. This article about molly houses and gender is really interesting. This article specifically talks about one in Whitechapel. - The Chevalier d'Eon. This one is just really interesting. While the Chevalier d'Eon was likely one of the first examples of legally recognized gender transition, this person was very famous and wealthy and the circumstances are buckwild. This video is highly watchable and informative. Grell

As a queer person and someone who likes history (I don't have any specific training, I just like learning about it), I already think a lot about what it must have been like to live during this specific time period, and Grell slots into that pretty well as a character to fixate on, since she dovetails with the other existing hyperfixation. By extension, I like using this information to think about what Grell's human life might have been like, and how those experiences could be aligned to explain a lot of her behavior, and seems especially poignant to me in light of all reapers having been people who committed suicide, another recent lore reveal in the manga. Maybe she lived closeted and lived in fear of discovery. Maybe she wasn't afraid! Maybe she was impulsive and endangered herself and others! Maybe she got blackmailed. What if she experienced her first taste of femininity at a molly house? Does she only go after men who reject her because she lived during a time where her affections being returned was intensely dangerous? Did she care about anyone? Is anyone she knew still alive? If I'm able to rally, I do want there to be a part 2 to this going more into detail about how it makes sense to me that these homophobic and transphobic societal pressures could have created a character like Grell.
