Ari AU - Part Four

The next segment in my Popstar Grian AU that I have been cooking up with @angeart . Sorry for the wait on this one, life has been getting in the way a bit and writing this AU down is exhausting!

Hospital, Continued, OR: This is Likely Not An Accurate Representation of Seizure Related Disorders

Things calm down once Grian is stable again. It takes some work, lots of nurses and doctors hurrying around and running machines while Scar sits outside the room terrified. But eventually, she's deemed stable and Scar is given the go-ahead to re-enter the room.

The crew are finally allowed to sit in the room with her too, but it’s honestly kind of boring. Grian is unconscious, and there isn't much more to say. Talking about what happened - the suicide attempt, isn't something anyone really wants to do at the moment.

While they're waiting it turns to late morning. Impulse goes out and grabs some copies of the morning tabloids. They probably aren't the most pleasant thing in the world to read but the crew have to know what's being said about Grian.

Mumbo goes to get them all some breakfast from a vending machine (and comes back holding way too many packets of chocolate and crisps) while Pearl gets coffee and then stays with Scar, putting a hand on his shoulder as they sit together listening to the steady beeping of Grian’s heart monitor.

When Impulse gets back with the tabloids, it at least gives Scar a break from the silence. Everyone starts ranting about how insensitive the headlines are and how they’re going to have to do so much work to fix things when Grian is better and... Scar looks at them fondly, but doesn't really add to the conversation.

He's glad for the distraction. The hope they still carry that Grian will get better. Because Scar can't see that now. He really can't see it. She looks so fragile now, so drained of life, lying in the hospital bed.

It's another few hours before he wakes up.

As soon as they hear the muffled sounds of Grian trying to speak, Scar is right at her side. There had been mutterings between nurses about how worrying it’s getting, more nervous looks being shot her way with each passing hour, but Grian is waking up again. She’s incredibly hazy and out-of-it, but she’s awake.

And Scar is there this time. He's right at her side. Immediately ready to help her with anything she needs.

The oxygen mask is taken away and Grian tries to say Scar’s name, but it barely comes out as anything. Then he just sobs against Scar's chest, too tired to panic, too hurt to speak. Scar holds him as nurses very carefully flit around.

For a while, she’s kind of fading in and out of. When she’s awake and aware, she talks to Scar a little. Asks if she died. If she was kidnapped. Did she take too many pills? Why is everyone here? Is any of this real? Scar answers each question softly and gently with as much clarity as he can. Which isn’t much, because it’s still Scar.

As he gains more awareness, Grian keeps apologising to Scar. For attempting, but also for not succeeding. For burdening him. Scar never stops his reassurances, holding Grian as close as he can while whispering in her ear.

When a doctor comes in and talks about a psych eval, Grian panics. She's terrified, and guilty, knowing exactly what they're going to say. Of course she isn't mentally well. Everyone can see that. She attempted suicide, for goodness' sake.

More pressingly, she thinks she's going to be taken away. That they won't let her go home with Scar. They'll put her in some facility where she'll never get better. The horror stories she's heard from others who have been in the system like that shake her to her core, and that's what really frightens her. That's what makes her want to escape it all.

Attempt Two - Hospital

When the nurses leave, Grian asks Scar to loosen her wrist straps because she’s uncomfortable. The nurses said that they’re for Grian’s safety, but… what harm could it do? Scar doesn’t want Grian to be uncomfortable. The crew have gone home to sleep, while Scar chooses to stay overnight. 

But though Scar falls asleep on the chair next to her bed, Grian stays awake, mind full of loud and terrifying thoughts. She is so afraid, and guilty about what she's putting Scar through, and, honestly, feels like finishing what she started is the best way out. Even if it is scary, it’s less scary than the psych eval. Less scary than the thought of being taken away from Scar and analysed by doctors. Less scary than the thought of it all being leaked to the press.

With the wrist straps loosened, it’s easy for Grian to escape her room and slip out into a hallway. She finds medical scissors in the bathroom. Which is scarier than the pills. More physical and real. 

There is barely an attempt before she’s found by a nurse. She must have made a lot of noise getting out of bed and into the hallway. Even with scissors, there isn't even a scratch deep enough to bleed. Still, she’s told off and sent back to bed.

Scar is given a very stern talking-to by an angry nurse for letting Grian get free and wander off. He’s horrified that he let it happen, the looming ‘what if?’ playing in his head the whole time.

There are consequences. For some time - whatever the doctors decide - he isn’t allowed to see Grian. Which is torture, really. To distract himself, he takes a few much-needed trips between the hospital and home.

The psych eval goes badly the next day. The doctors confirm Grian's fears, wanting to send him to a facility of some kind. She begs not to be sent away, that it would kill her, even if not literally. She wouldn’t last long in a place away from Scar, especially not being observed and evaluated. Hearing her distress, Scar insists that Grian should be allowed to come home. 

It really hits Grian that it isn’t her choice. It’s Scar’s, as his partner and the closest thing she has to a legal spokesperson (aside from, what, her manager?). Ever since she cut her family off.

Grian has no control over his own autonomy. He supposes he forfeited the right to speak for himself after two suicide attempts, but still, it’s horrible. Or, a horrible thought. Grian is somewhat confident that, because of her status and wealth, she could reasonably convince them to listen to her and her alone, if she needed that to happen. Luckily, Scar’s on her side regardless.

He promises to read all the booklets the hospital gives him - especially the ones about what to do if Grian has another seizure - and to lock away all the sharp objects, pills, shoelaces, wires, and glass in the house. Which he does during the time they don't let him see Grian (the biggest chunk of time is when Grian’s therapist visits. That's something they're going to have to keep doing, of course).

But, before anyone can go anywhere, first priority is a brain scan. Because something happened to Grian when she first woke up, and they don’t know what yet. Which is also terrifying! Grian is getting tired of being terrified!

It’s remarkably fast, as procedures go. The doctor and nurses take Scar aside and start talking to him, which Grian sees and really really hates because hello? He's right here? If there's something wrong with him, he wants to know!

Afterwards, the doctor does come up to her and explain that he's been diagnosed with something-or-other (she isn’t really listening, which sort of defeats her previous point) and needs to stay away from flashing lights and high stress scenarios.

Flashing lights. High stress scenarios. Grian almost laughs, that's actually hilarious.

There is also medication. Scar’s been given pills for her to take daily, to prevent seizures.

Oh. Scar’s been given the pills so that Grian can't take them on his own. So she can’t overdose again. He feels like he's being treated like a child. He understands why - he deserves it - but it still hurts. 

Then, that’s it. Grian makes enough of a recovery to be discharged, and it’s time to go home. Prescribed with new pills, more therapy, and a lot of things to read. It feels anticlimactic. Impulse calls and says he’ll bring over a car, so… it’s another waiting game. 

While Scar and Grian sit in awkward silence, Scar runs over the guilt in his mind. The fact that Grian got out of his room and was going to attempt again. Grian being dragged back into the room, arms scratched up, crying as she’s restrained again. Scar pushed out of the room and listening to her cries, being told it’s his fault she escaped… it all hurts.

But it was a mistake. It is in the past. Scar quietly places his hand over Grian's, extending the olive branch to her while trying his best not to cry. It doesn't matter. He has to be there for her now. 

Leaving The Hospital

Impulse arrives with a baseball cap (which is too big) and sunglasses for Grian, to both hide her identity and keep the camera lights away. There are a lot of people outside still, with cameras and microphones. Cameras with flashing lights. Microphones that cause Grian so much stress. 

How lucky.

Heading out first, Impulse distracts the crowds. Then, Scar tells Grian to close her eyes entirely and just let him guide her to the car. Pay no attention to the reporters. It's okay. They don't matter.

Grian’s used to it. He doesn't even complain. He knows he's just a thing to them. An object to gawk at and capitalise off of. Maybe she'll write a suicide note and blame them in it. That'd be a good comeback, wouldn't it?

It’s not a comforting thought, though. She loops an arm around Scar’s shoulder and allows herself to be moved like a ragdoll, stepping cautiously out of the hospital doors with her eyes shut tight and head bowed to the floor.

The light of cameras flash behind her shielded eyes, but nothing happens. It’s overwhelmingly loud, after so many quiet days in the hospital, but she pushes through. As she always does. Within a few moments Scar gets her into a car, and they’re off with no incident.

No seizure. It's strange getting used to the thought. Seizures were something that happened to other people, not to Grian. But now they do. Now there's something else to watch out for.

During the ride, Grian stays quiet. He’s scared to find out what’s waiting at home. Whether their house will be swarmed with people, or if it will be safe. Terrible thoughts crawl into her head like parasites, eating away all hint of positivity and relief from being out of the hospital. Scar seems upset with her. It's uncomfortable.

And then, without warning, they’re home. Like time has slipped past her. The car engine stops running. Grian remembers to breathe.

There’s no one there. At least, no one visible. Once they get inside and close the front door, Grian stands in the hallway, unsure of what to do with himself. He asks Scar, half-dissociated, if she’s still a person. Scar responds: of course, Grian is his favourite person.

Grian thinks she’s a lot of people’s favourite person, and that’s basically the problem. Something bristles up her spine as she thinks about the bar, and that person, the one who drugged her. 

She's so terribly afraid of everything. Of herself. Of the press. Of the stalkers. She doesn't know how to explain that she still has nightmares about being drugged. And that the night he took those pills was both the calmest and most terrified he's felt in months. Because everything was going to go away. But everything was going to go away.

He tells Scar that he doesn't want to kill himself, but also yes, he does. She doesn't want to die but at the same time, how else will everything just stop? There's no other way out. He can't see it getting better. 

Scar doesn't have an answer either. But he asks Grian, quietly, if he could just... try to stay alive. Even if it's hard. Even if it hurts. Try to stay alive, because he doesn't know what he'll do without Grian. Without Grian being there. Experiencing the world with him. 

He can't - doesn't want to - imagine Grian never smiling again, never singing again, never getting another haircut or eating his favourite food or telling Scar she loves him, ever again. Never listening to Scar's Disney rambles or planning to pull little pranks on their friends. Never crying. Never coming up with song lyrics, or designing outfits. Never holding Scar again.

It's haunting, how Grian seems so far removed now from when Scar met her. Only a hint of her past self shining through, begging to be found and held onto. She's changed. They both have. But losing her altogether?

Scar can't think about that. It's maybe all Grian can think about. And they both feel very, very helpless.

Kitten update: Surprise! Starla is male 😂

We went to the vet again for some vaccinations and to get Aries her health eval post-adoption. Everything checked out - except Starla lol

I saw a different vet this time, and glad I did. This one was awesome and seemed more invested in my kiddos. Also had a fun time joking with Starla being male. So now I get to figure out another name 😂 it truly worked out then that I got Aries despite wanting a boy kitten. The stars did in fact align lol

Starla is a BIG boy though. At 10 weeks, he's 4lb where Aries is about 14 weeks and is 3lb. The good news is the kittens have "trauma bonded" and now are snuggling in a kitten pile. They are absolutely adorable.

Angel is being wonderful, though still not doing great about eating near the gate. So that may be a longer process... We'll figure it out!

so uh... could I ask for that list of characters their fandoms like to think are doms that you think are actually subs? and why? if you’re not too busy ofc, I’m just really interested lol

this is gonna be controversial so if ur a switch look away from this post - these r just my opinions btw!! pls write characters however u please it dont matter that much n i respect ur feelings. pls respect mine!

hq, bnha, aot, and naruto men who seem like doms but i think are subs.. sorry this is so long!

my number one is hq - we will start from there, this list is meant for characters i think highly prefer/completely are submissive. not people who i think switch! 

TSUKISHIMA: i know what you’re thinking. i do - but tsukishima is someone who genuinely pegs me as submissive. probably not meaning to discover it and probably not realizing it until he’s knee deep in a committed relationship with someone who keeps him on his toes. the mutual respect in knowing he’s with someone who can dish it out is a kick in the throat for him. 

KAGEYAMA: how do i say this... i think kageyama enjoys being lightly submissive because he likes being told what to do and how to please you. it makes the practice of sex easier and enjoyable - plus it helps him decompress 

USHIJIMA: genuinely whole-heartedly believe that if this man gave half a fuck about bdsm he would be a submissive man. it’s humbling and ushijima loves worshipping his s/o - submission does that for him to the nth degree. he’s not really kinky but he knows himself and his relationship to his lover. his unavailability is a huge part of his insecurities as a lover  - and giving his time and energy to the demands of that person are extremely gratifying. lives to serve. 

onto the next! bnha 

BAKUGO: this one im actually so convinced on i sometimes laugh when i write him as a dom. i find it incredibly hard to picture. this volatile, emotional, and constantly argumentative man absolutely screams submissive to me. like a punch in the gut, honest to god. of all the men in this list - this is one where i don’t think i could ever really take him seriously as a dom or switch. that’s a submissive man to me, nothing can change my mind sorry! 

TODOROKI: another one where i giggle a little bit trying to write him as a dom. not even just cause he’s a sweetheart but because i doubt he’d feel entirely comfortable inflicting violence on his partner - plus mommy issues are simply staring at them in the face like. inexperienced too? 

HAWKS: i feel like this one is 50/50 in the sub thing but like...... i see a lot of people write him as this teasing and playful dom but i think sex needs to relaxing for him in the sense that his job is extremely tough. i also just feel like it makes sense. like idek. just the vibes.. 

lastly aot + naruto.. 

for aot - 

LEVI: a submissive, incredibly loyal and with a deep love for pain and masochism. the captain leavi is tired of taking orders and demands the deep-seated pleasure of servitdue. nothing change this opinion for me. submission is a long-haul game and levi loves being second place. he gets exhausted of everyone walking on egg-shells around him and meeting someone who takes him down a peg makes him feel human + he enjoys it. and masochism is a reclamation of his pain but that’s neither here nor there ! he’s a sub to me, sorry gang

watanabe haruto’s sep 20′ eval aries - passionate, confident, motivated august d buffy - daechwita

this eval was going to be tough, haruto knew that from the start. 

he was someone who knew very little about the zodiac signs and didn’t even know what sign he was under, having to take to google to even find out. and when he did find out and read through his sign’s supposed traits, he did have to double check he was looking at the right thing. none of the traits listed on the page in front of him sounded like him in the slightest. a confident leader and motivated and passionate? and upon reading all of this he was sure that this was going to be a tough one. not to mention he couldn’t even find one other single aries so couldn’t even hide himself in a way in a group and was just going to have to take to the front by himself. probably his worst nightmare, if he were being honest. 

it took more time than he wanted to admit to even find a song he would be happy to do. though even the final choice was one he had a lot of time to think about, unsure if he could even pull off something like this. it was supposed to be a powerful and confident performance like his sign was telling him he was supposed to be. but anyone who knew haruto knew that he was usually a nervous and quiet wreck every single time he was asked to perform. 

but he had found out that now he had picked a song he didn’t actually have that much time to practice - let alone pick something else at the last second. so, stuck with his choice, haruto simply decided to fuck it. what the hell. he was just going to have to do this and put on the best damn performance he could manage and that was the end of that. while he had no confidence that he would actually be able to pull it off successfully he, frankly, didn’t care anymore. maybe if he showed off how rubbish he was at everything they might decide to cut him loose. 

 still, he practiced his choice all the same, going over the fast rap over and over again. paying extra attention to his breathing, making sure he was pronouncing everything properly, that he wasn’t about to go and stumble over his words and make a total idiot of himself. the coaches wanted him to be a rapper more than a vocalist, so he supposed they were going to get their wish. 

the day of the evaluation he was pretty chill about the whole thing, not nerves, no twitching fingers, he was just completely indifferent to the whole thing. and even when it was his turn and he was stood in front of everyone he looked completely unbothered by the situation. which was a stark change to how he usually was standing waiting to perform in front of people. maybe he should have this complete indifference every single time he performed, it would make life easier and stop him being so nervous about everything. 

“apparently, i’m an aries,” he introduced with a shrug of his shoulders, “and the traits don’t suit me in the slightest, so whatever, i guess.” he couldn’t exactly change the month he was born in so he was just going to have roll with what he had been given. “let’s just get this over with.” 

even as the start to his song choice started he didn’t seem in the least bit enthused about the whole thing, just stretching his arms up above his head, rolling his neck to get a little looser before dropping his arms again, starting to pace from side to side just a little, head bopping ever so slightly with the music as the intro played. but when it finally came to actually starting to rap he was just on full concentration mode, paying full attention to what was coming out of his mouth as he kept up with the fast pace of the rap. 

and you can bet he didn’t even bother to make it a clean version of the song, almost happily keeping in the swear words as he rapped along with the song. standing still also wasn’t much of an option for him, either, unable to stop his hand from moving, the tap of his foot, the bop of his head, the slight passing from side to side as he rapped each word just like he had practiced.

the whole performance, surprisingly, went quite well for him. apparently, not worrying about every little thing and just letting it come naturally helped with the nerves. who would have seen that one coming? he was pretty sure he had just managed to get through that whole rap explosion without saying anything incorrectly and may have even looked as though he knew what he was doing as the centre of attention. 

maybe he should give less of a shit about things a little more often.

         to others, it might be a stupid idea. to joohyun, it’s an inspired one.

        despite her natural inclination towards the routine ( because it’s comfortable, expected ) there are times when joohyun’s aries side manifests into abrupt impulsivity. chanyeol had suggested the pepero commercial as a jest but the longer joohyun thought about it, the more the absurd idea began to root itself as the best and most fun option. oh, she’d tried to do things the traditional way at first, capitalizing on the pair’s double strength as a rap duo to show off that way ( and still, she lowkey wishes they had ) but when else would joohyun get an opportunity to do something so completely out of the box like this? as it turned out, she and chanyeol also had another trait in common: in his words, “natural charisma,” and few would be the groups on stage who’d attempt a feat like this.

        ( in the end, the novelty of an acting performance had been too attractive for her to resist. )

        the Sunday before evaluations, joohyun stops by the hospital to have the cast around her arm removed. the doctor tells her it’s best to remain careful with it but the rapper doesn’t really need the reminder; it had been brutal enough having to endure rehearsals and training one-handedly and there is no way in hell joohyun would do anything to risk having to return to that state. the habit of keeping her arm tucked close to her chest lingers long after the hospital visit and it’s only with jonghyun’s gentle encouraging at home that joohyun begins to ease back on treating her own self like a breakable glass. ‘it was just an accident’ he reminds her with that brotherly scolding of his and joohyun inwardly sighs to realize he’s right in this case. she couldn’t prevent another accident simply by over-protecting herself anymore.

        little by little, joohyun forces herself to put full bodily effort into the final rehearsals before the actual performance day. she uses both of her hands, her whole body, and her rarely-smiling lips to act the part of a happily-surprised friend when it’s her turn to act. chanyeol’s uplifting spirits are always consistent and joohyun finds it impossible to remain down in the dumps for too long whenever he's around her-- an unexpected boon she is quick to take advantage of. chanyeol gets her laughing and that contribution alone heals her bruised trauma more rapidly than anything else.

        ( not that she’d ever tell anyone that, of course. )

        her heart races rapidly when it’s their turn to be called to the front. their props have all been arranged by the staff ahead of time: a small table placed for joohyun to sit down at for the start of the performance, the pepero boxes chanyeol will use, and the small cake set aside, too. but before they begin, the introductions are always expected. routine, tradition-- none of them could escape those even if their presentation was an unusual one. her palms are clammy and joohyun experiences a brief moment of uncertainty as she takes her place in front of the panel. was she crazy for agreeing to do this? would they think it was too stupid?

        well, there was no point in backing out now.

        “i’m bae joohyun, sphere trainee,” she introduces smoothly and accompanies it with the polite bow that’s expected of her. joohyun hears chanyeol follow suit and they explain the concept they’ve prepared: a short theatre performance that mimics the setup of a commercial spot. obviously performed without a camera, this act is only a testament to their live acting abilities-- and to better sell themselves as future brand ambassadors. the quiet snickers joohyun can hear from the other trainees are heard but promptly ignored. it’s only the expressions on the judges’ faces that matter to her and joohyun keeps her eyes locked on them, holding a steady gaze with the sphere ones in particular before she and chanyeol are given the nod to proceed.

        joohyun flashes chanyeol a soft smile of encouragement before heading over to take her spot by the table. the chair scrapes across the floor but she ignores the sound, ignores everything that could distract her from getting into character. her eyes close and joohyun imagines herself as someone else entirely: a lonely, upset girl whose friend has, yet again, forgotten her birthday this year. a sad expression takes hold of her features and joohyun sighs quietly. she occupies herself with a pen on the table, circling her name and birthday on a calendar as the first strains of background music begin to play. they’d chosen this accompaniment together: a simple, upbeat guitar instrumental to contrast joohyun’s current expression-- and to provide the smooth transition into chanyeol’s energetic entrance.

        “happy birthday!” comes his cheerful voice and joohyun is stunned when a pepero box is laid down in front of her. her eyes widen but the gifts and wishes keep coming. each box chanyeol gives to her is graced with positive messages-- ones of love, of humor (“buy me food, joohyun!”), of friendship-- and joohyun finds herself grinning in delight in a matter of minutes. but delight rapidly slides into disappointment once it hits her that this is all he’s planned. all this time waiting for him to remember and pepero boxes is all he’s come up with! call it spoiled, call it high expectations-- joohyun’s pretty face darkens into a scowl as she turns in her chair in order to stand up. quickly collecting the pepero boxes to her chest, the girl gets to her feet threateningly, her lips parted around a devilish scolding before her words are ripped away in a sharp gasp.

        -- chanyeol stands there, his face wreathed in a warm, heart-stopping smile as he holds up a birthday cake for her. in that instant, joohyun’s anger melts away in a flash. a beautiful smile replaces the fury, blossoming brightly on her face in resplendent answer to his surprise. chanyeol sings ‘happy birthday’ to her and joohyun is awash with utter happiness, the tears pearling behind her eyes as she turns to face the front of the panel with chanyeol beside her. her fingers curl around the pepero boxes as she holds them up proudly and, together with chanyeol, they speak the rehearsed phrases in sync:

        “Lotto Pepero, the perfect gift to compliment any celebration!”
